Action Comics #13 - The Ghost In The Fortress of Solitude; A Boy And His Dog

5

If you're looking for answers and developments, you'll want to check this out. Morrison delivers a story with a slightly different take and treats us to some interesting guest stars.

The Good

Looking back is always a good thing in the New 52. Seeing Grant Morrison's take on Krypton and the first time the Phantom Zone was use was fascinating. It's always been an odd twisted turn of events how they decided to treat the criminals and that they ended up being the ones to survive Krypton's destruction.

The main focus and joy here is Krypto. We've been teased for some time now as to the fate of the Superdog. The previous mention of a ghost dog watching over Superman made you wonder what that meant. Of course there will be some that aren't completely thrilled but we can finally put this all to rest. Morrison will keep you on the edge of your seat in anticipation.

The return of Xa-Du is another interesting chain of events. We know about his role from previous issues. Seeing his hatred for Superman unfold is leads to a big change for Superman.

Morrison tells the story in a different type of narrative. It does change the feel of the story. Having Travel Foreman handle the art was a fitting choice for this "Halloween" story dealing with "ghosts."

Sholly Fisch and Brad Walker handle the back up that focuses on "A Boy and His Dog." I don't care what you say, when it comes to Krypto stories, I'm always on the verge of getting all sentimental.

The Bad

I suppose it's not a spoiler that Phantom Stranger appears here since it's mentioned in the solicit. I have to wonder, how the heck did he end up in the Phantom Zone? I thought I read PHANTOM STRANGER #0. Perhaps I need to re-read it. Or maybe we'll find out later. He seemed like an odd choice to include here.

I believe we still haven't been told when Superman came by his frozen/crystal Fortress of Solitude. When it first appeared, I believe we were told it'd be explained later. Another odd choice.

Am I completely losing my mind? I can't seem to recall how he came into possession of the Phantom Zone projector either.

The Verdict

Krypto. That's enough to make me happy. We've been wondering what his fate was since the New 52 started. Now we finally have some answers, including clarification as to what the "ghost dog" mentioned in earlier issues meant. Seeing the beginning of the Phantom Zone and the return of Xa-Du raised the excitement. You'll find the back up touching your emotions as you see the relationship between baby Kal-El and Krypto and realize how much they lost. Grants different approach to the narrative gives the story a classic feel to it and fitting for a Halloween story, despite not really being a Halloween story. If you've been wondering what Krypto's fate will be, you need to check this issue out.

I gotta admit, the back up had me feeling a bit mushy.

Like I said before, best Action Comics issue yet. Krypto, the fact that it was set in Halloween, Xa-Du, the back-up, the dialogue in the Phantom Zone ("They called me Ursa the She-devil!" "Non hate all!" "KNEEL BEFORE"), I loved everything about this issue.

Dern Krypto stories get me every time. I'm glad they changed him to look less like the new version and a but more like the old.

Maybe Phantom Stranger can mingle in and out of the Phantom Zone? That confused me too (along with where the heck his Fortress just popped up from!)

I usually don't like Morrison's writing, but this one was very sweet. I wouldn't worry about the Phantom Stranger and why he's in the Phantom Zone, though, I just chalk it up to Morrison doing whatever he pleases, continuity be damned. My favorite part was the back-up though. It was a really touching story.

He did give an explanation for the Phantom Zone Projector. He and Dr. Palmer retrieved all of the important Kryptonian artifacts from the bottle city of Kandor. The Projector was one of them. As for the Phantom Stranger, he was investigating a "haunting" in Metropolis when he was abducted by the Phantom Zone criminals. As for how they got him into the Zone without a projector and how this all connects with Phantom Stranger #0 (which I haven't read) I can only guess. Chalk it all up to mysticism, I suppose... Still trying to figure out the Arctic Fortress conundrum.

Honestly, I'm more apt to blame this all on DC editorial problems then Grant, but they are an easy target. I feel for them. I imagine it's not an easy job.

TThis book is off my pull, and I am starting to question the reviews on this site.

I am new to comics and find this series is not accessible to new readers. I don't get how a sentimental attachment to krypto can push this thing to a 5/5.

What does 5/5 even mean on this site, as this edition is definitely not perfect. I am so happy to have found this site and got into comics, but the reviews are not done impartially.

@mrbee15: It measures how good the reviewer think it was, and you're right it's probably not an impartial review...but when have you ever seen a review done by someone with no personal opinion?

A good story is a good story. This is a good story. Also, what are you talking about? All reviews are kinda done with personal opinions.

Even though the Phantom Stranger has just been introduced to the new52, DC seems determined to continually slap readers in the face with information revealing his identity. I thought Phantom Stranger was suppose to be this mysterious character. Yet every time he has shown up I feel like DC is standing over my shoulder going, "you get that he is suppose to be Judas? Right? You get that right? He's Judas...Get it? Because he took the Silver..(Nudge Nudge wink wink)" I am not opposed to the idea, but I don like that they are pushing this right away. Even if that was the ultimate goal, why would you reveal it right now? The only thing that would make me interested in this character at this point is if they reveled that he is defiantly not Judas. They might as well call the the character "Phantom Judas". But they were probably worried they would get sued by the Vatican.

I don't think I really need to say what I thought about the issue, considering my user icon :)

Though I'm happy to see Krytpo back in the world, I'm saddened by fact that he hasn't appeared in DCnU elsewhere. This either means that the editorship told everyone to hold off until Morrison could reintroduce him, or that the unspeakable happens sometime between Action Comics and the present day series.

For now, I'm just happy that they have been reunited. A boy and his dog. What could be more perfect than that?

Couldnt many of your 'bad points' be explained/expected by Morrisons, often, non-linear way of telling a story?

Alongside All-Star Superman #10, Action Comics #9, and Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, the back-up in this issue is without a doubt one of my favorite Superman stories of all time.

Wow, this issue was everything I want out of Grant Morrison and Superman. It wasn't perfect but genuinely entertaining and emotional. Five stars, spot on!
