    Origin

Before becoming donning the mask and becoming a superhero, the man that would become the Recluse was originally a big game hunter. While in Africa he received an ancient African curse that turned him in a spider-like monster. His only way to alleviate his affliction was to eat the hearts of other humans.

Thanks to his powers he stopped aging and took numerous identities. He started his superhero career possibly in even donning a mask, calling himself Doc Spider to fight crime during America's Prohibition era.

He eventually found his way to Toronto where he teamed up with heroes to stop the V'Ran invasion. The Recluse became one of the founding members of Front Line.

When the hero Crosswind came into the fold of the Front Line, unlike many of his teammates, the Recluse was suspicious about him from the beginning. He was unable to find any hardcore proof of Crosswind's origins.

The Recluse caught Gaijin and Crosswind attempting to steal the team's files, he initially accused Gaijin of treachery, but apologized when she revealed her adopted brother was kidnapped and being held for ransom. The Recluse, Gaijin and Crosswind searched for him, tracking him to an abandoned warehouse. To cover more ground the trio split up, unfortunately the Recluse began to suffer from his curse, into to alleviate his pain, he called his assistant Samantha, who directed him to a bar where he might feed. However on the way he found Kayoto's barely alive. And to make things worse the V'Ran had returned with three new giant bio-mech and began terrorizing the city. Faced with a dilemma and his hunger, Samantha urged him to feed on Kayoto's heart as he was a criminal and would be doing him a mercy as his condition was far beyond help. Regaining his humanity and a clear mind, Recluse realized the attack on Kayoto was consistent to a man being spun and flung to the air. He then realized it to be Crosswind, but was unable to determine why Crosswind would do such as thing.

Crosswind appeared behind and proceeded to attack him, however their fight was postponed when the saw civilians in danger of a burning building. Both silently agreed to hold off to rescue them. Once the people cleared, the two heroes brawled. Recluse demanded why Crosswind murdered Gaijin's brother, and what was his angle, only to be met with taunts by his former teammate. Crosswind told Recluse it was useless and that he had seen Recluse devour Gaijin's heart, and no matter what he could say he would turn the Front Line against him. When Crosswind said he would kill Samantha once he put an end to him, Recluse attacked him viciously damaging Crosswind's armor, only to discover Crosswind powers came from himself and not his suit. Crosswind proceeded to beat the Recluse to a pulp, until he heard a scream of a young boy and his cat clinging to dear life. Crosswind abandoned his task to saving the two, but was killed by debris.

After the invasion, the Recluse asked the team not to reveal Crosswind's death to the public. He gave them an explanation that he wished to locate Crosswind's family, however using Crosswind's communication helmet he tracked his employer, Ray Fournier. After threatening the police inspector why he targeted Front Line, Recluse learned that Fournier's family were casualties from the first V'Ran attack and that the inspector was furious of the heroes lack of humility when they soaked in the limelight of their debut and their lack of concern for the innocents.

Recluse realizing the man was right about Front Line's hubris, released Fournier, he told the inspector that he would make Kayoto's death one of the many deaths from the second invasion, and the he would be working for him.

After Luminary left Earth to discover more about her powers, Recluse succeeded her as leader of Front Line. He never told the team of Crosswind's deception but instead martyred him as a hero. Taking Fourier's word to heart he turned Front Lines direction into saving the innocence as a priority.
