Wendell Vaughn a.k.a Quasar was a low level S.H.I.E.L.D agent when he first encountered the Quantum Bands that Captain Marvel once wore. The SHIELD scientists were experimenting on the bands. Another SHIELD agent names Wesley was using the bands and was unable to control the power they possessed and exploded in front of everyone in the lab. Right after this explosion one of the scientists who was a traitor to the A.I.M organization signaled the AIM terrorist cell to attack and steal the bracelets. Wendell decided to use the bands to protect his father and SHIELD. Once he put on the bands he defeated the entire AIM terrorist cell which consisted of about 50 robots. Nick Fury immediately gave him a job as founder of the SHIELD Super-Agents. Quasar along with his cosmic powered Quatum Bands became Protector of the Universe and has sense then battled the cosmic threats to our galaxy.

Deathurge was originally a assassin for Oblivion. It is not known whether Deathurge is a demon, abstract being, or entity. Deathurge was ordered to kill Quasar because Oblivion saw him as a threat becuase of Quasar's position of Protector of the Universe. Deathurge has been determined to exploit the streak of fatalism he sensed in Quasar's personality. As Deathurge see's it Quasar is a dispicable hyporcrite for pledging to champion all life while denying his feelings of futility and angst regarding his own existence.
