    "Punisher Noir" #1 Reviewed!

    Punisher Noir #1
    Written by: Frank Tieri
    Art by: Paul Azaceta

    Frank Castle, " The Punisher" is not a character I consider to be one of my favorites; so when I decided to sit down and review it I will admit I was a bit inclined to dislike it from the start. Putting those sentiments aside, I opened up to the first page and came face to face with an array of incredible eye catching images that brought me back to the days where I would sit in my apartment on a rainy day watching classic Noir films such as Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity, for example. Obviously, I greatly underestimated the effects that a good comic book can have on a person. Needless to say, I must admit I was pleasantly surprised at the way a story, when well written and coupled with panel after panel of phenomenal art work that is both dark, gritty and captivating can make me feel. If you can't tell yet, I really enjoyed this comic.

    The story opens in 1935, Manhattan and everything from the first four panels tempts you with it's overwhelmingly dark and gloomy feel. We see a man (who we can guess is Frank Castle,) seated at the edge of a bed listening to old-time radio. Once I realized that Tieri would be utilizing the old-time radio mystery broadcast that is used in the scene to set the "noir" mood in addition to it being a third person omniscient narrator, I cracked a smile. The introduction was superb. The transition to the back-flash is effortless, and we meet Frank Castle's father, who we learn to have been the first Punisher as well as the obvious motivation for Frank's beliefs and values. The following scenes depict him during World War I, where he is reminiscing and speaking to his wife who we discovery has evidently passed away.

    This is not the story of Frank Castle's father (even though he is present for a great portion of the total number of pages, and was in fact the primary narrator in the story), but really about Frank Castle. It is a look at who he is as a character and it delves into his father's character for motivation.

    The art and writing complement one another perfectly, and I would recommend the book to anyone with an affinity for "noir."  I am really looking forward to the next issue.

    NOIR seems to be Marvel's new favorite word. They add it to everything now. Even Jamie Madrox of X-Factor is saying it constantly.

    I like the more muted color tone. It fits the feel for the era. It almost has a Sin City-esque type of feel. Grim and gritty with a bit of color.

    @Anybody

    Noir is one of my favorite genres. That era was so crazy! I know that there is a Daredevil Noir series out there. Does anybody know if there was a review for that?

    @Babs

    I think that review sold me on Punisher Noir as well Babs, thanks. Gonna have to run out and get it.

    I hope that "Noir" doesn't become the new buzzword for Marvel. Would totally ruin it for me if it becomes catchy and cool to refer to things as "Noir".

    That's a concern I'm having with their gross overuse of the word. Kind of like several years ago they had all those 2099 titles.

    Words can have many different meanings when you change the context. Especially, when it can involve different languages. In Japanese a single kanji can at times have different meanings.
    Though kind of a weird name for a body wash. I've never heard of black vanilla.

    I’ve been really interested in the Noir series, but I’m not sure if I should give it a go. I can’t remember books they’ve even made. Spider-Man, Daredevil, now Punisher. Am I missing any?

    And I've been describing things as noir for a decade. It's not a new term.  =P

    The first page of the comic, it's 1935 and we all know that FC didn't become Punisher after Vietnam which is in the 70's, so there is so way it could be Frank, must be dad.

    First, that hairstyle looks good on you Babs. Even if it was getting in your face. Lol

    I cannot wait to read this, for someone whose not a big Punisher fan but loved this book tells me that it's defintely a great read. This is probably the only marvel Noir book that is worth picking up. Accept maybe the Spider-Man Noir , THAT I heard was good.

    Punisher is a great character who sometimes isn't handled correctly. Ennis is really the only guy to me who truly understands the character and brought him down to basics. I recommend you read Punisher :Born  Babs. It explains alot about Castle from when he did his tours in 'Nam and explains why he's able to do what he does and not die. Now I must warn you it is gory but still a great story nonetheless.

    Thanks for this great review and hopefully you'll grow into becoming a Punisher fan.

    This story isn't canon. It also doesn't match up with any of "The Punisher's" back story. It's a "noir" tale. Did you read it?

    After reading your review Babs I have to say I might have to check this comic out. I started collecting the XMen Noir ones but I just couldn't get into it. But I've always been a fan of the Punisher. The Noir collections seems to have alot more potential then the 2099 series did. But I have to agree I hope they don't beat it into the ground. With all the titles they have they can probably stop and just do those. No reason to give every character a Noir.

    Isn't the concept Punisher Noir a little bit redundant? Well, where I'm from Noir stories haven't been published yet, so I don't really get the concept. As far as I know/understand is like black cinema stories, isn't it?
