After his son was killed by reckless teenagers, Ed Harley took the body of his son to the witch of the woods and made a trade, his soul for vengeance, and the demon known as Pumpkinhead was summoned to fulfill the bargain, the demon killed several of the teens in a horrific manner before Ed committed suicide, stopping Pumpkinhead with his own death in order to save the last teenager.

The next time Pumpkinhead surfaced he was revealed to be a horribly deformed but kindhearted boy who was viciously murdered by a group of high school jocks in the 50's. It is presumed that he was the son of a witch and demon. This time Pumpkinhead took vengeance on those who murdered him and the teenagers who were more recently responsible for his mother's death. Ultimately the town sheriff stopped Pumpkinhead from killing the last teen, his daughter, by reminding Pumpkinhead of their friendship back when Pumpkinhead saved his life.

Pumpkinhead is not truly evil, but rather a force of nature, vengeance incarnate.
