Cardinal Hell

No Caption Provided

Upon an entirely other realm, forged by the faithful of the Liafador Religion, the Cardinal Hell thrives. But there are different levels of this tormented land Ruled by the dark and twisted Ramon Liafador. A land where the wandering souls go to with unfinished business, a land to those who were unfaithful and unworthy of both Cardinal Heaven and Hell and where those loyal to Ramon and those who worked for Liafador’s who were faithful to Ramon thrive.

Yermo

Welcome to Yermo
Welcome to Yermo

Yermo (translated to Wasteland) is an unseen realm that sits in between Cardinal Heaven and Hell and is parallel with the World of the Living. When a person of the Liafador faith (or member of the family) dies, if they are left with unfinished business, their souls are placed in Yermo. The world around them is that of the living, only dark, gloomy, damp and distorted. Sounds of the living world are slightly twisted in Yermo and understanding conversations happening around them might be difficult to make out. This is because the language of the dead and the living are different. The language of the dead is one language spoken among all spirits. There is no English, Spanish, Chinese, it is simply a single language of the dead.

The spirits are unable to speak with the living even though they can see everything that is happening upon Earth in that moment around them. Time moves at the same time as the living because there is only a thin veil separating each plane of existence. Anything that happens in Yermo does not happen in the world of the living. If you break a window, it will not affect the window in the world of the living and within a few minutes, the window will mend itself together again. You cannot harm the living and you cannot force yourself into a living being.

Unable to communicate with living
Unable to communicate with living

Deep within the Liafadors books (which many were destroyed in the Liafador Palace) there is a ritual that can allow the living to step foot in Yermo. However because of the strain it puts on a person's soul, only those who have braved The Pit are able to travel there. There are rituals to bring the soul of someone trapped in Yermo to the world of the living, but those books are long destroyed and are not remembered among Liafador family members. If a living person finds themselves in Yermo, they will feel disoriented and fatigued that will increase over time (only those who are conquerors of The Pit are excluded from these symptoms). This is because a living body isn’t meant to roam the lands of Yermo, and the moment you enter it, Yermo is trying to separate the soul from the body. It is unclear how long the process takes as no one has been alive to record it. There is no known exit from Yermo aside from magical means, but in Yermo, powers (of both living and dead) are of no use here and items that grant special abilities are powerless here. You are a simple mortal in Yermo.

Those among the living with strong spiritual connections to other realms can communicate with those in Yermo. But if you do, the Rebaños will attempt to use that moment where Yermo and world of the living are opened just enough for them to squeeze through one at a time.

Rebaños
Rebaños

In Yermo the Spirits are able to see past the flesh of mortal men and women. The humans in the living appear to be almost like spirits in Yermo. They have a bluish hue around them and their skin appears to be pale. If there is a stain, scar and such upon a persons soul, a person in Yermo can see it. If there is a demon, other worldly creature or God/Goddess living in the mortal world, those in Yermo can easily spot them even if the being is flawless in the mortal world.

There are no animals in Yermo with the exception of crow like creatures called Rebaño. Rebaños (meaning flocks) fly together in Yermo seeking lost souls to devour for themselves. The longer a spirit dwells in Yermo, the more likely Rebaños will find them. The creatures do not come from Cardinal Hell and do not take orders from those in power in Cardinal Heaven or Hell. It is a myth that Rebaños are lost Cardinals souls who were rejected from Cardinal Heaven and Hell. The Rebaños are black feathers, their beaks actually to be rigid and have four sets of eyes. Two yellow and two red.

Inframundo

Welcome to Inframundo
Welcome to Inframundo

Inframundo (Translate to Underworld) is an area that brings souls one step closer to Cardinal hell. This area is for cardinals who are unworthy of joining the Cardinal Hell Army. This world also runs in a parallel to Earth. It is described as a dimension that is a dark reflection of our world. It is a place of decay and death, a plane out of phase, a place of monsters. There are buildings that are found in the world of the living but unlike Yermo, you cannot see the living in this world. However, unlike Yermo there is active plant like life as well as creatures of all shapes and sizes that wander around.

No Caption Provided

The atmosphere of Inframundo is thick with a musty smell of mold and mildew that engulfs what little senses the souls have. Unlike Cardinal Hell, Inframundo is so cold that there is no way to keep yourself warm. Even in the hottest places that would be in the world of the living are said to be as cold as Winter in Russia. The sky is covered in a thick cloud of darkness that is lit up with crimson lightning every few minutes. The Myth of the Crimson Lightning is said to be Ramon using his powers to try and pierce through the sky and return to the land of the living to conquer it for himself.

The plant life is seen all over in this realm. Black vines stretch out all over the realm covering the streets, buildings and especially creatures that have died in this land. It’s said that if a soul lingers for too long in one spot, the black vines will slowly reach out to you and attempt to devour your soul. If one were to follow the vines, it would actually lead to the Cardinal Hell gates. It’s said that the vines steal souls for Ramon who in turn uses them to make himself stronger in hopes to overpower the binds that keep him in Cardinal Hell.

Mordbido's
Mordbido's

The creatures in Inframundo are the same but evolve over time. They are called, Mordbido’s. They are creatures that roam this reality hoping to find a soul to consume themselves to grow and become stronger. The smaller creatures run on four legs and are about a large dog. They run quickly, are known to dig tunnels and are able to climb up objects and even buildings. They travel in a pack of five or more. Their thick, grey and slick skin is enough to withstand some assault rifles (if anyone was able to bring any to Inframundo ). Their heads open up like the petals of a flower and have the nickname of ‘petal mouth’. However reach ‘petal’ is filled with teeth and from their throat, a thin, long tongue can be seen that they are able to use to tie around their prey. These creatures shriek to each other for communication. They have no eyes and rely on their ability to smell souls and are sensitive to vibrations on the ground.

Mordbido (larger)
Mordbido (larger)

The larger creatures are still Mordbido's however now stand on two long legs and have equally long arms that end with claws. It’s said that these creatures are the smaller ones who have consumed enough souls to have somewhat the appearance of a human. However, like it's a smaller version of itself, its head opens up to four slits that look like petals only to have teeth all lined along. The larger ones are faster and stronger than the smaller ones and are able to track souls more easily. They normally roam alone and if encounters another, they will fight for dominance over the other.

El Caso is the final creature in Inframundo said to be the pet of Ramon. It is a monster that towers over buildings and trees being said that is about 45 stories tall. His body appears to be nothing but a giant black shadow made of smoke but in reality it is created by souls of Cardinal’s who betrayed Ramon while they were in Cardinal Hell serving him. El Caso has multiple elongated limbs that branch out into smaller limbs. The crimson lightning seems to increase wherever the El Caso roams. El Caso is said to be in control of all things in Inframundo and follows the command of Ramon.

El Caso
El Caso

There is a theory that someone can access Inframundo through The Pit, but no one has been able to test it. There have been humans who accidentally stumble into Inframundo through magical means, but once they enter, they are unable to leave. If a human comes into Inframundo the Mordbido’s are instantly aware of them due to their soul still being inside a body. Powers and abilities only work here if they are powers that have been granted by Ramon. In other words, Demons/Hell Cardinal’s abilities work in Inframundo as long as Ramon doesn’t revoke them.

Living beings who find themselves in Inframundo instantly face the eternal frigid chill of the land. They will feel dazed and develop a tingling sensation throughout their entire body which is their soul being pulled towards the Cardinal Hell Gates. The few humans who survive their journey to the Cardinal Hell Gates will find the pull overwhelming, almost impossible to ignore. Those who did not face The Pit will be unable to resist and the moment their hands touch the gates, their souls are removed from their bodies and pulled through the gates and into Cardinal Hell.

Cardinal Hell

Welcome to Cardinal Hell
Welcome to Cardinal Hell

Cardinal Hell is where Ramon and his army of Hell Cardinal’s thrive. Sitting on his throne Ramon rules all of Cardinal Hell and out to Inframundo. He can go into Yermo as well, but the creatures there do not listen to his command (however it should be noted that the creatures cannot harm him). It is here that tourter of a selected few by Ramon himself are to reside for all of eternity. These souls don’t even have to be ones that have wronged the family in any way. These could be souls of people who through magic appeared in Inframundo and made their way towards the Cardinal Hell Gates or souls of people he simply doesn’t like and negotiated with is wife (Sabella, Grand Cardinal Goddess of Cardinal Heaven) to gain those souls for his own pleasure.

Ramon Liafador
Ramon Liafador

Cardinal Hell is a dry, extremely hot and barely resembles the land of the living. Buildings and other man built objects here are fractured and bare. Almost all plant life is nothing but withered shrubs. There is no water. No animals that you would see in the land of the living. Any lakes, oceans and such are filled with fire. Forests are where those who committed suicide hang for all of eternity. Mountains and hills are formed by the mutilated body parts of those who dared to harm a Liafador who are not part of the family and are still alive and able to feel on all parts of their mutilated body. Planes have wandering souls whose eyes have been gouged and tongues have been cut with their arms bound to their back, forcing them to roam around not knowing where they are and leaving them unable to communicate with anyone around them. These are the people who used Liafadors to pave their way into a better life but forgot where their blessings came from.

The sky is a reddish orange color with harsh dry hot winds that force ash (of those who are burning in the lakes) to scrape against your skin. Flare of fire can be seen coming down from the sky when a new soul entering Cardinal Hell (that isn’t a loyal Cardinal), appearing like a meteor from space. Upon descending into Cardinal Hell, Hell Cardinal’s await for them, ready to torment them the moment their soul touches the ground.

The ‘demons’ in Cardinal Hell are actually Hell Cardinals. Depending on how loyal they were to Ramon (or the Liafador serving Ramon) will determine how powerful they are in Cardinal Hell. Cardinal’s are not tortured here (unless it is on that Ramon negotiated for) but celebrated for their loyalty to Ramon. There are Hell Cardinal’s of varying sizes, shapes and power levels. They are only able to return to Earth if they have a living body to occupy and must only be going to Earth if on a mission for Ramon (or another Ruling Liafador). If a Hell Cardinal attempts to go to Earth, Ramon (or another Ruling Liafador) will summon the Cardinal instantly back to them, take away their powers and throw them into Inframundo to be eaten by El Caso. Cardinal’s from all factions (White, Red, Black and such) make up Hell Cardinal’s and because of this, they do not have a singular fighting style but rather a mixture of all factions.

Upon the arrival of a new Hell Cardinal, the Hell Cardinal Oath must be recited in order to serve Ramon and to have the perks of being a Hell Cardinal. The Cardinal must kneel before Ramon, recite the Oath and present his own soul to Ramon as a gift. Ramon (if he accepts) will say out loud what the Cardinal did in their lifetime that allowed them to be standing in front of Ramon. Ramon would then place his hand upon the head of the Cardinal and corrupt the soul and form them into Hell Cardinals. This is when everyone see how loyal they really were by the display of power they will receive in this moment.

Hell Cardinal Armor

Hell Cardinal Armor
Hell Cardinal Armor

When Hell Cardinal's go to the land of the living, they must obtain a living body for their souls to occupy. Once they have a soul they can shape-shift into their Hell Cardinal Demon body or keep the form of their host body. If they stay in their host human body, they must wear the Hell Cardinal uniform. The unholy metallic armor only protects them from Holy Liafador objects and allows them to enter Liafador temples of worship without becoming harm. It also protects them from any cleansing rituals that may try to purge them from their host. Their armor is also very distinct in order for them not to be confused with other Cardinal Factions. They still obtain inhuman strength, durability, speed and reflexes. Any special abilities Ramon gave them will also still be able to be used (such as Flight, telekentic abilities and such).

Hell Cardinal Sword

No Caption Provided

The Hell Cardinal Sword is created from an unholy metal (like the armor)forged by the flames of Cardinal Hell. Their sword is able to repel magic and spiritual castings. They must run their blade along their hand and it is their blood that ignites the Hellfire to their blade. The fire is able to not just burn flesh, but the soul of any being it touches. It is stated that once the soul is tainted by the blade, the soul is doomed to Cardinal Hell. If a mortal picks up the sword their bodies will erupt into Hellfire flames and their soul will instantly go to Cardinal Hell.

It should be noted that if a Hell Cardinal is ‘killed’ in the land of the living, they do not ‘die’. Only their hosts dies. Hell Cardinal’s simply go back to Cardinal Hell where they can then try to occupy yet another body.

Rise of The General of Cardinal Hell

It was a battle unlike any other, a fight on the planes of Limbo, a land that hung between the thin lines of the living and the deceased. It was here where her abuelo, Ramon Liafador, the Cardinal God of Hell, brought the two to fight after their battle in The Pit, where the two had died, but were held in this land for the Cardinal God’s pleasure. It was here that he laid the set up. Putting his daughter against his granddaughter as a final battle to find who was worthy of his attention.

The fight lasted what could have been said lasted for several months. Time wasn’t real here. What felt hours here could have been seconds in the world of the living, or months could be years. The battle pushed forward. The two women were manipulated by Ramon, pulling out their deepest hate and anger, using it to force this final confrontation. Neither of them held back as the very ground they fought upon trembled under their might. Zeon wasn’t a Goddess, not like Ziccarra, but like Ziccarra, she was bred since birth to be a warrior, a killer, forged through the trials of the Liafador Family.

No Caption Provided

Throughout the years she was taunted for being the weakest in the family. But as she grew, she gained powers from different sources. From the Ring of Rage, to the powers she gained from her trails in The Pit, to the still unidentified mind stone that rested in the family necklace, she became more powerful than she ever imagined, than anyone could ever imagine. Now… she was unleashing everything she learned throughout her years, into this battle.

The final moments of the fight happened so quickly, that it’s still unclear how it happened to anyone looking into the fight. All that was left was Ziccarra Liafador, laying lifelessly on the ground with Zeon standing over her, a crimson ball of energy in her hand, similar to that of her daughters. Zeon turned her body to face her Grandfather, still in the slithering form, standing tall and over her as she walked to him. He had a malice grin on his face as he looked down upon his granddaughter, as if he already knew what the outcome of the fight was going to be. A moment of silence as she looked down at the soul of her Aunt, the one who forged Zeon into what she was today, and she hated her for it. It was time to dedicate what was left of her life to something else, something bigger than herself.

The Cardinal Demi-Goddess of Rage then closed her eyes and knelt down on one knee, bowing her head and raising the soul of Ziccarra up to the Cardinal God of Hell. His growling snicker could be heard as he reached down and with the talon like nails of his hands, picked up his daughter’s soul with one hand and with the other, placed his hand upon the head of Zeon. As he did, a surge of blistering pain went throughout her body. She let out a cry of pain, as the stink of burning flesh could be smelt around them. Her skin began to turn into the color of ash, grey, lifeless, as if the blood that coursed through her body suddenly stopped.

Rigid breathing was heard from her as he lift his hand from her head.

“You are no longer a Cardinal Demi-Goddess… you are, The General of Cardinal Hell. Now… Rise.”

Slowly standing up her now crimson eyes looked up at him, a new power pulsating through her veins. She had never felt so… alive. She took in a deep breath, looking down upon her hands she took notice of her changed skin and gave a twisted grin.

A new Era of the Liafador Family, was about to begin.

The Last of the Cardinals

The former Matriarch of the Liafador family sat, slouched forward and with her elbows pressed against her knees as her hands supported her chin, silently in the Cardinal temple of Tibet, upon the throne of the former High Cardinal Goddess, Sabella_Liafador. The Liafador of Rage came here when her family originally vanished with no traces of them for her to find. She searched everywhere she could think her family would be. The ruins of the Liafador palace, the broken Emerald City, the family winery… this temple, but nowhere… they weren’t anywhere to be found.

But instead of chest crushing panic, paralyzing fear, overwhelming depression… she felt… liberated. All her life she was raised for one thing, to fight for the family, to protect the family, to serve the family, to sacrifice everything for the family, and she did. She did everything she could, but it wasn’t enough. The family crashed and burned to the ground with her last memories of them, them trying to kill her and now… they were gone. Her chest felt lighter, her mind seemed less fogged, her mind wasn’t constantly worrying about the well being of the Liafador Family before her own. It was as if their disappearance gave her a freedom she had never felt before.

No Caption Provided

It was now she had come to a revelation. Ziccarra, forcing her to take the reigns as the Family Matriarch wasn’t keeping her together; keeping her grounded or helping her grow… it was keeping her chained like a wild beast. The family rules, the customs, they restricted her from her true potential. Having to control herself, it was similar to telling a lioness not to hunt, not to kill. It was slowly crippling her, starving her from her true self. No more. The Lone Liafador’s eyes slowly opened, the once chocolate brown eyes had turned into a mixture of crimson and gold, similar to that of a burning flame. “You are an Aggressor, embrace it.” were one of the last words that Vinicius_Corvo spoke to her before vanishing from her life yet again. She didn’t understand what an ‘aggressor’ was or what these gifts she was given were that she obtained after her second time in The Pit, but they were fueled by her rage. The more anger she had, the stronger she became, and she had years of pent up rage inside her.

A white clad cardinal came before her, his head lowered as he knelt down. “Padrona, there are no traces of The High Cardinal Goddess, Ziccarra or anyone else from the family.” The Cardinals that remained felt abandoned by Sebella and Ziccarra. They had dedicated their lives and souls to the family only to have been left behind without reason. To the remaining Cardinals, Zeon was their savior who cared enough for the Cardinals to stay behind with them while the rest of the family ascended elsewhere. Even the Crimson Cardinals, who had betrayed The Matriarch, came crawling to her for forgiveness, coming to their realization that they had been fighting for the wrong Liafador with the bitter taste of abandonment in their mouth. The Savior of the Cardinals, it wasn’t a role she thought she would pick up, but one she would gladly take if it meant she would have true control over the entire Cardinal warriors.

"Good."

Her lips curled up in a venomous grin. “Good.” she breathed out as she slowly stood up to look upon the last of the remaining Cardinals standing before her who still lived after the quarrel within the family and managed to survive Maya's wrath she unleashed upon the world. "Your High Cardinal Goddess has abandoned all of you, left you empty, with broken promises of a life of luxury after death for your worship towards her. For your loyalty to her. But I, Zeon Liafador, Demigoddess of Rage, Savior of the Cardinals, the Liafador Matriarch who some of you were disloyal to, I am here with you! Even those who betrayed me and came to seek forgiveness, have I not forgiven you and given you a home among me and my White Cardinals?" The Cardinals in unison gave a war cry to their Savior. "Have I not been merciful to you all?" Again, they roared out to the one who cares for them. "Have I not fed you!?" "Yes!" "Sheltered you!?" "Yes!" "Bled along side with you in the deepest bowels of hell while while your High Cardinal Goddess sat safely upon the throne, becoming fat with wine?" They yelled out her name together, "ZEON!" "AM I NOT WORTHY OF YOUR LOVE!?" "ZEON!" "AM I NOT WORTHY OF YOUR LOYALTY!?" "ZEON!" "WORTHY OF WORSHIP!?" She spat out, as the roars of the Cardinals shook the foundation of the temple. Zeon rose her arms up to towards the sky, a grin of malice stretched across her face. It was all too easy manipulating the remaining Cardinals, so desperate to find someone to follow.

Coming to stand by her side was none other than her adviser since she began her life as a White Cardinal leader. “Gianvelli"She spoke as she began walking away from the throne, allowing the Cardinals to go back to the training with the newfound revelation in their mind as Gianvelli walked two steps behind her.

"That was a fantastic speech Padrona, however... what exactly are we doing here?"

"We will be rebuilding the Cardinals here and do what my Nona (grandmother) and Zia (aunt) should have done with these blind followers."

"Padrona, with all due respect, you are but one person. Don't you think you would at least another person to help you with this?"

However, watch out for Isis.
However, watch out for Isis.

Zeon gave a smirking grin, this is why she enjoyed Gianvelli's company, he questioned her, even with her known temper. "Si Gianvelli, but I wish to do so only with blood that I trust... my blood." She walked into a large library filled with scrolls so old that they were in air tight containers to attempt to preserve them just a few more years, away from the oily grasps of human hands. Zeon walked up to a desk, one littered with papers as she grasped a single one, turning to Gianvelli and handing it it to him. "Search for my sisters, Leah, Jessica, Chance… do not engage them, but rather come to me with their location. They are not to know you are looking for them, and they are not to be harmed. I wish to speak to speak to them. This paper has listed locations where they might be as well as last known locations. However, watch out for Isis. I have a feeling my dear cousin will not be welcoming to the ideas I have planned for us."

Gianvelli looked at the paper for a moment before bowing his head before her. "Your will be done mi Padrona"

Return to The Pit: The Cardinal Temple

No Caption Provided

Zeon stood at the edge of the Pit, her dark brown eyes glaring down into the abyss as the hairs on her neck began to stand. Only four people had gone into The Pit and succeeded in completion and Zeon was one of them. Going in the first time was a trial that she wouldn’t wish upon anyone, but the thought of going back in again… it made her stomach turn. There was no telling what would happen to Zeon, physically and mentally after entering The Pit for a second time. It was unheard of for someone, let alone the head of the family, to enter The Pit more than once. But after the events at the Liafador Palace, she didn’t have a choice. A deal had been made between The Matriarch and the Darkness consumed Maya Liafador, and it was time for Zeon to do her part.

Looking behind her, Future Tassiana stood with the look that Zeon was feeling, worry, fear and anxiety, only difference between them was that Zeon was good at hiding her emotions. Going with tradition she dawned the rags that were issued to everyone who entered The Pit, but this time going in with two weapons, a bow and arrow, and her sword. Future Tassiana was given the responsibility of protecting her younger self. The future of the Liafador line would be left vulnerable during Zeon’s time of absents and what better person to protect the young Sapphire Goddess than her older self.

“Zeon…” Tassiana began, holding onto The Matriarch’s quiver. “This is a horrible idea.”

Zeon’s eyes shift gaze from her cousin back to the darkness below her. She knew this wasn’t a good idea. But what choice did she have? The balance was in Zeon’s hands, and she wished upon the High Goddess that it wasn’t. “Just do what’s expected of you, for once Tassiana.” Her glare at Tassi was harsh as she snatched the quiver from her hands. “I have to fix this chaos you caused.” The Matriarch hissed as her attention pulled away from her and looked up at the sun lit sky one last time. “If I’m not back in a month… it means I have failed.” Her attention went back to her cousin, her face that of stone. “If that is the case…” she pulled a sealed envelope from a leather satchel she was going to take in with her to bring the dagger back out with her. Written on it was ‘Nemesis Liafador’.

“Isis?” Tassi questioned grasped the envelope from Zeon’s hand, it had a bit of weight to it, which caused the Sapphire Goddess brow to rise.

“It officially hands over the power of Matriarch to her, with the Matriarch necklace inside. She won’t want it… but she’s the only one I would trust to care for little Tassiana and do what it takes to push the family in the right direction.” She was still conflicting with herself if Isis truly did betray the family with Ziccarra, but deep down, Zeon knew that she was always the rightful pick to be Matriarch. It was something she was trained to become since birth. It was her birth right.

“Zeon-"

“Smettila!” <Stop it!> She cut off the Sapphire Goddess, growing tired of this talk. “These are the steps needed to be taken, I have to be realistic about the situation, there is a chance I won’t make it back and I have to do what I must to preserve the family. So just do as I tell you to do!”

The stink of it's breath was that of death
The stink of it's breath was that of death

With that Zeon made her way to the edge of The Pit, where nothing but darkness could be seen. With a final breath she slipped on a parachute upon her back, there would be no time wasting attempting to climb down. Her legs pushed her off the edge as her body began to free fall deep down into the abyss of The Pit. The air went from a misty cool to a freezing chill within seconds as she released her parachute. The darkness quickly engulfed her senses as her vision became obscured. She could feel the musk of the air hit against her body as she did her best to navigate through the darken atmosphere before releasing her chute. Her body free falling once more as her body landed on the soft and wet patch of ground but the stink of rotting flesh loomed in the air. From the thick consistency of the moisture under her feet and the reek of a metallic scent told her it was in fact, blood. Bushes began to rustle behind her and without hesitating, she withdrew her blade with a shiiiiing from its’ sheath, her vision still completely obscured she had to rely on the vibrating footsteps on the ground, the sound of the beast breathing in heavily and the stink of it’s breath was that of death.

Time escaped Zeon, in that moment in battle her mind was no longer her own, but rather became one with The Pit. It felt more natural than before to live in the chaos, as if she was home. When she originally left The Pit, she felt as if something was taken away from her, that a part of herself was left inside the deadly abyss. Of course, she never spoke a word of it with Ziccarra or Isis, but rather kept it to herself. But coming back, it felt like her mind and body were restored on a certain level. Her mind was one with her body and her true warrior and survival instincts had taken control. She could feel the power of The Pit course through her veins, as if the blood of the Cardinal Goddess have been fully awaken coming back into the Twilight Underworld.

No Caption Provided

It was difficulty for Zeon to stay on track. It felt the longer she stayed in The Pit, the more she became easily swayed from her mission. Instead of going right to the temple, she would go on a feral rampage, hunting down beasts for her own entertainment, rather than fighting against them for her own survival. She had become as feral as the monsters in the jungle, maybe even more so. She could feel her body begin to grow with power, a power that felt raw and true. It was as almost as if she had become one with an invisible and intangible energy that she had never felt before. It build off her anger, the more rage she felt, the stronger and more powerful she became. It was addictive, and Zeon wanted it all. The only thing that kept her on track, was the overused seashell bracelet that clung to her left wrist. The once groves from the white shells were now worn down and black from Zeon constantly running her fingers upon it, reminding herself why she was here, why she was doing this yet again. It was for her, for Chance, and for the Liafador family. She had to keep telling herself this, to justify what she was doing and what she was to do in the near future.

She couldn’t tell how long she had been in The Pit before she stood before the large Cardinal Temple that towered over her and was too tall for her to see the top. It was located in the darkest and coldest corners of the abyss. Her breath could be seen being pushed between her lips as she exhaled as the sleek ice that covered the area could be felt against her bare feet, but seemed not to bother her, as if her skin had thickened during her duration in this frigid purgatory. The Matriarchs eyes also had time to adjust to the pitch black darkness around her, or maybe it was a blessing from The Pit.

No Caption Provided

The temple was larger than she last remembered, and now she could visibly see a statue of a woman, dawned in a cloak. Could it be the representation of the High Cardinal Goddess? Her grandmother? Maybe… but she didn’t have time to figure out details. It was time to finish her mission. Getting a closer look, you could visually see that the temple was in fact carved into the walls of The Pit, meaning the temple was in fact created by the very stone that held The Pit together and covered in thin transparent ice. Making her way towards the door she could hear the hissing and bass rumbling growls of the creatures all around her, but none dared attacked, as if they knew she was now standing on holy ground.

The temple was vast in the inside as well and was surprisingly warmer. Dim crimson glows of fire could be seen going down the long hallways that were decorated with carvings along the stone walls which seemed to be a story of some kind, one that Zeon was not familiar with or understood. What was this temple created for? For whom was it created for? However, the temple would soon prove to be just as deadly as the creatures that loomed outside. Soon she was lead to the second part of the temple that seemed to lead to a lethal complex maze. Traps that consisted with pressure plates, trip wires and levers were littered all over the temple the deeper she journeyed inside. Pit falls that were deeper than the eyes could see, rigid darts shooting from the deep groves of the walls, ceilings attempting to crush you and starving beasts that lurked around tight corners.

No Caption Provided

How she made it through surprised even The White Cardinal. She had lost her bow somewhere in the maze and her blade had become dull. The rags she once wore were now used to bandage her own wounds. Her hands and feet covered in blisters and sores. While you lost time during your trials in The Pit, in the Temple you lost all sense of reality. What was real? Did that statue really look like Ziccarra? Did the carvings in the wall just become animated? Was that Tassi’s cry in the distance? Her mind was unable to keep focused, her sanity felt as if it was slipping away from her mind. Lifting her head up, her eyes looked forward to see an alabaster box sitting upon a marble pedestal. The walk to it was a narrow path with nothing but emptiness all around her. Drips from the slowly melting ice along the high ceiling could be heard tricking down to the darkness around her and a single light, that almost seemed to come from the heavens, gently kissed down upon the box, as if it was holding something so pure and precious it had to be displayed in this manner. But nothing that could control the darkness that lingered inside Maya could be such a thing. Zeon’s bare feet slowly moved forward, afraid of triggering something that could possibly kill her before she could lay her hands on the box.

Her shaky hands planted themselves on the box. It was cold as death as her fingers forcefully opened the box, her brows pushing against each other as they laid their eyes on the item that could save her sister. It was a kriss dagger, silver with black markings that ran all along it. But what caught the Liafador’s attention, was the name that was written on the dagger itself. “Maya Liafador”, Zeon’s raspy dry voice spoke out as she could feel the amount of power that was held on the dagger just by touching the alabaster box alone. It tingled along her fingers and gave a strange chill that ran down the back of her spine. Shutting the box she tucked it away into the satchel carefully, not wanting to harm the precious cargo that she was now going to have to carry back to the surface world.

NOW

Her fingers once more dug within the stone wall lining of The Pit, her muscles, ligaments and tendons pulling, stretching, flexing together in unison but screaming in pain as The Matriarch climbed her way up from the twilight purgatory. The light of the sun could be seen beginning to shine down upon her and as she paused for a moment to look up, she could see the cool blue sky above her. Her eyes shift to the seashell bracelet for a second, soon, soon she would be reunited with her sister. But as she pressed on, series of thoughts began to overwhelm her.

Was it going to be worth it in the end? Yes she would save Chance, but what about in the long run? Zeon couldn’t pretend she could protect Chance, or any of the family for long. Soon, another tragedy would strike. Soon Zeon would be left with another choice to make. Make another sacrifice. Risk her life yet again. Attempt to fix the problems that felt too complex for her to even grasp. How long until carrying this burden would kill her? She had brushed death so many times already, it was only a matter of time before it would claim her, just as it had other members of the family.

With a final push her hand reached up from the frozen hel and grasped a hand full of soft grass that still had morning dew. Giving out a final cry she pulled her body out as the Wild Card Liafador stood to her feet even though her body demanded rest. Her mouth hung open as she breathed heavily, sweat running down her forehead tricking down her temple and dripping off her chin as her eyes darting around the area like a wild animal. Her bare, naked body was covered in mud, infected wounds, ulcers, lacerations and black stains of blood that could have either belonged to her, or the demons of The Pit.

Cardinals began to approach her but something inside her stomach began to burn. That same energy she had felt while in The Pit, she was now feeling even stronger now that she reached back to the surface. The anger burned like a fire as she suddenly reached out to one of her Cardinal’s, her hand stopping a few inches from him as the Cardinal suddenly stopped walking, wrapping his hands around his neck as he began gasping for air. The other Cardinals stopped in their tracks as they stood in shock of what was happening. The raw energy of this new power flickered in a yellow hue around her eyes. But that second she snapped out of it, a memory rushed into her mind from back when she was a child, when she trained with a young man who displayed the same power years ago upon her. Blinking her eyes her hand dropped as the Cardinal fell to the ground at the same time to his knees, gasping for air as Zeon grasped the clothing from one of the still stunned followers.

What happened to her while she was in The Pit? What was this new ability she was granted? She couldn’t focus on that right now… now… she needed to find Maya and fix what had been broken.

---------------------

TL;DR

Zeon goes into The Pit to retrieve a dagger than can control the darkness inside Maya Liafador. Prior to The Pit Zeon made an arrangement with Maya that she would fetch this dagger for her, in return for her sister's (Chance) restoration of her mind and for the safety of the family from Maya herself. During her time there, a new power awakens inside of her.

Waking up to Nightmares

Tassiana stood silently before a single Katacomb that was currently in use, and inside was none other than the White Cardinal herself, Zeon Liafador. During the events of Madrid, the young Sapphire Goddess quickly got Zeon and her cousin Leah out of the Spain as fast as she could moments before her sister, Maya, completely put the once majestic city, into utter ruins after being manipulated by their mother, Ziccarra. But because Zeon was infected with Ziccarra's version of the Necodexa Virus, after protecting her sister, Leah, the only place the youngest Liafador could think to take the two was the Cathlicon.

Dr. Ashley Knightfall, without hesitation, began to treat Zeon with series of blood transfusions and fusions of the Knightfall Saint’s own white blood cells in hopes to help keep the virus at bay while she ran her own tests on the sickness. But without knowing anything about the virus with the exception of what was told to her by Tassiana and Leah, it was difficult to figure out what kind of virus she was dealing with. But it was now that the Knightfall and her team came up with a vaccine for the virus as well as antibodies that could successfully fight off the vicious viral infection.

“The virus made a heavy impact on the brain and several strains of DNA in her body.” Dr. Knightfall began explaining to Leah and Tassiana about the complex properties of the virus and the effects of the sickness on the brain. How it increases aggressive behavior and explain how the virus was able to quickly and viciously attack and control not just the White Cardinal but everyone it infects. How the virus goes through the blood vessels and travels to the brain and limits the function of the cerebral portion of the brain along with a section of the limbic system and cingulated gyru. She also explained how it also manipulated strands of DNA. "This virus is able to integrate into the infected DNA and this will change the sequencing that area by adding the virus genes. So they don’t live in cells and create proteins like the common cold, this is a whole other level of virus.”

Tassiana's body stiffened with worry, as she glanced over at Leah for a moment. She could only imagine what was going through her mind right now. She had just found her family a couple of months ago, found Zeon, her sister and now… there was a chance she could have lost her for good, all thanks to Tassi.

The young Liafador didn’t pretend to understand everything that was placed before them, she wasn’t a doctor and didn’t understand much of the medical terms but the important question needed to be asked.“But… these tests that you’ve been running, have you found… anything, any sort of cure?”Tassi asked, trying to push for more information. “Is Zeon going to be ok?”

Ashley’s lips pressed firmly against each other as she took in a deep breath, her eyes pulling away from the two Liafadors for a moment. “Zeon is going to live, if that’s what you’re asking.” She began.“I’ve come up with three different antibodies that should effectively attack the virus and re balance her cerebral cortex. But the effects of her DNA… I can’t reverse, that’s very much out of my scope of practice. I don't know what kind of special abilities she may have had... but she may not have them anymore. We wont be able to tell for sure until she wakes up. But yes... she will live through this."

A partial sigh of relief escaped from both Tassi and Leah in unison. “You should go and get some rest cousin, I’ll keep an eye on Zeon for now and I’ll let you know if anything changes.”

The dark circles that had formed under her eyes told the story of the older Liafador who refused to leave her younger sister side. She was like a protective lioness, not wanting to leave her sibling under any circumstances. But with semi-good news, it seemed as if she would finally go and get some rest.

Leah didn't answer right away, her arms crossed tightly across her chest as she kept her attention on Zeon as if fighting with herself on if she should go rest or continue to stand by her side.

"You won't do Zeon any good if you're too exhausted. Please, rest."

With a sharp deep breath the Liafador gave a light nod. “Ok, thanks Tassi.”

NOW

It had been several weeks since the infusion of the Necodexa antibodies and through trial and error it seemed as if Ashley had found the cure for the viral infection. But it was a slow process, the cure couldn’t be distributed in a rapid sequence in fear of causing severe brain damage to the White Cardinal. In fact, the antibodies had to be infused on a daily bases throughout this time. The viral infection was stubborn and refused to leave it’s Liafador host, but today was the moment of truth. With vitals steady and with the viral load count less than 10%, Zeon could be brought out of the Katacomb and continue with infusions of the antibodies on a now bi-weekly bases. That is… if the antibodies did their job and Zeon would come out non-hostile.

Leah and Tassiana were no where in sight, and were instead, told to wait in the room Zeon was going to be brought into, after being brought out of the Katacomb.

With a firm nod of her head the Katacomb’s fluid began to drain from the bottom as the Knightfall Saint stepped forward as the sphere rose up, the lower portion opened up, causing Zeon’s body to slide down into the arms of the ROME’Ds as Ashley quickly pulled out a flashlight and began shining them into the eyes of the White Cardinal leader.

In that moment her chocolate brown eyes pupils contracted as her entire body buckled forward. She couldn't breath, it felt as if she was drowning. Her eyebrows pushed against each other as she grit her teeth before forcefully coughing up fluid from her lungs that filled her Katacomb. Then she gasped for air, her lungs burning from the sudden dry air that filled her chest.

Fluid from the katacomb continued to drain all around her and the ROME'D as she looked up at Ashley Knightfall. Zeon moved her lips to try and form words, but just couldn't find the strength to do so.

"Ms. Liafador, I'm Dr. Ashley Knightfall, don't worry, your sister and cousin are in another room waiting for you. You just need to relax right now. Ok?"

In the patient room Leah stood with her arms crossed along her chest as Tassi was sitting on the other side of the room. Neither of the Liafador's exchanging words, only occasionally glancing at each other until the sound of the door opening caused both of the women's heads to dart in that direction. Then seconds later smiles appeared on their faces as Zeon could be seen being pushed in the wheelchair by a ROME'D, dressed with a green hospital gown on. Her hair still damp from just being brought out from the Katacomb but her expression was still the same, cold like stone.

Zeon wasn't one to express anything other than anger or pride, but the moment her eyes fell upon Leah, relief could be seen in her eyes. With what strength she had she pushed herself up from her wheelchair, causing the ROME'D to stop what he was doing as the Matriarch weakly hobbled to her sister who met her half way, wrapping her arms around her older sister as tightly as she could. "You're ok." Was barely audible as she spoke into Leah's ear. The last thing Zeon remembered was pushing her out of the way of an incoming attack and it wasn't until now that she knew Leah was ok.

But then her eyes laid upon Tassi, and the all too familiar anger filled her entire body. She knew what her cousin was thinking, this was all her fault, and she was right. Tassiana's travel to this timeline had such a large butterfly effect, it has now caused her own timeline to have become an alternate reality. This timeline... was no longer her own.

Leah helped Zeon into bed as the life long White Cardinal began to ask questions of what happened to Spain as well as status of members of the family. Leah and Tassi began to explain the difficult situation as well as the ill fates of Ziccarra, Marcus and Maya. Throughout the entire conversation Zeon kept her comments to herself, as if taking everything in with the exception of giving occasional nods.

Sitting up tall and her hands in her lap Zeon didn't speak for a few minutes after everything was explained. This had turned into something that needed immediate attention. Ziccarra was dead, the woman she once looked up to. Maya was infected with darkness similar to Catalina once was. Selene, Leo and Alexis were no where to be found leaving younger Tassiana unprotected. With the balance of Spain interrupted thanks to Ziccarra and now Maya running around with a blackened heart the Liafador family couldn't afford to be inactive now. It was as if Zeon woke up to a nightmare. "Send a message out to the family. Meeting at the Castello Cardinale."

The Liafador estate extends along the southern slopes of the township of Sicily across 7,100 acres of land; one third of the property is under specialized vine and the balance is shared between olive groves, wheat fields, plum trees, truffle stands, forest and scrub.

In addition to the two traditional varietals of the area, Sangiovese e Moscadello, plantings of the principal noble varietals are perfectly integrated in this exceptional environment.

The soils are extremely rich and uniform, structured with clay and calcium which favor the optimal growth conditions for the vine and complexity in red wines, which the wealth of stones and organic matter render the aromatic profile of our white wines with classic minerality.

No Caption Provided

Recognizing the redoubtable value and potential of this terrain, for over thirty years the Liafadors have undertaken research and studies focusing on the principal red varietals, especially Sangiovese, in collaboration with some of Italy’s most important universities.

Tours of the vineyards are available for visitors and will be guided by one of the many Cardinal workers.

Aging

No Caption Provided

Wood in an important protagonist in the crucial aging process for fine wine. This phase is essential and crucial for the birth of great wines and in particular those made from selected grapes, richer and more structured.

To improve upon this process, Liafador undertook intensive research on wood, studying the selection of the trees, the aging, and the toasting process.

It is for this reason, in a continual pursuit of excellence, that the choice of wood is focused on the use of French oak: we start with the choice of the tree, the growth of which is strictly regulated in the prestigious Allier, Nevers, Fontainebleau and Tronçais forests of France’s Massif Central.

Once the staves are split, they are aged on the Castello Cardinel estate: the wood will be exposed to all weather conditions for two years in an ample area, stacked in heptagon form to guarantee a homogenous and constant qualitative evolution and seasoning.

Once the wood is fully seasoned and assembled into barrels, it is time for the toasting: the temperature is lower than that usually used and lasts for a longer period of time compared to normal techniques, avoiding charring and obtaining more uniform results. The innovative nature of this process lies in keeping in mind the final composition of the wood from the moment the toasting process is chosen: this permits careful management of the many variables involved.

Horizon

No Caption Provided

Horizon represents a production philosophy that, together with the unique nature of our Sicilian soils, allows us to obtain an optimal expression of Sangiovese. It is a Liafador style, authentic and original, made possible thanks to years of research on clonal selection, soil studies, the careful selection of vineyard sites and the vines to grow there, and other high level solutions in both vineyard and winery.

The grapes, carefully selected and harvested only by hand, arrive at the winery in ideal condition. The manual selection of the bunches is then followed by selection of the individual grapes, an intense process that guarantees the exclusive use of raw materials that are in absolutely perfect condition.

The true revolution is embodied in the tanks, hybrid construction using stainless steel and wood, where fermentation takes place. From this unique and inventive fusion of materials, Liafador captures the advantages of each. The Horizon vinification area is completely visible to our visitors thanks to comfortable architectural solutions such as a bridge allowing passage above the entire vinification process.

This innovative fermentation area guarantees wine making that exalts the unique characteristics of these grapes and this territory. The hybrid fermentation tanks allow for optimal temperature control as well as other aspects of fermentation, assuring the end result of wines that are less astringent, less bitter, and softer.

If the soul of Horizon is in the vineyards, the winery is without a doubt its very heart. Designed to preserve and highlight the integrity of the best grapes, the winery represents the ultimate expression of Horizon, a unique and authentic production style that designates new horizons for the wines of Liafador.

The Pit: Rise of the White Cardinal

After Flight of the Cardinals

The Pit can no longer wait
The Pit can no longer wait

No matter who the victor of the battle was, there was only one reason for the family to be brought together to unleash their abilities upon one another upon the Grand Cardinal Isle. It was a sacred ceremonial event that lead up to a member of the Liafador family to face The Pit. But what was The Pit? Between the old folk tales of the Malaga people and the few documents that were held in the Liafador Library, not much was known about trail that is stated to give new life to whoever is strong enough to endure it. All that Zeon knew was that every time a Liafador entered the Pit, they came out stronger. It was what The Liafador Matriarch needed. Yes, she was a deadly warrior, but in a world were people can destroy an entire planet just by thinking it, she was going to need to become more powerful. Everything that had lead up to this moment, all her countless hours of combat training, sleepless nights of meditation and grueling mental exercises that she was put through since her birth would have meant absolutely nothing if she couldn’t master The Pit.

In the Pit, it matters not what name you carried
In the Pit, it matters not what name you carried

The Matriarch dawned the rags that she was to wear during this event and removed her arsenal of weapons. Because in The Pit, it matters not what name you carried. It matters not what where you came from. It mattered not the sacrifices you have made. It mattered not who you killed or saved. Nothing up to this point mattered, because in The Pit, you were no one, left utterly alone to fend for yourself, to survive or die. As she began to make her descend, her breath shaky with nervousness as the reality of what was about to happen to her began to settle in her mind. If she made it out, if she passed The Pit, she was not going to be the same woman she was coming in.

Thick musty smell of mold and mildew engulfed her senses as the soul piercing cold sent shivers down her spine. Before making her way completely in, her chestnut eyes glanced upward towards the soft golden glow of the sun that peeked through the top entrance of The Pit. It was going to be the last thing she would see until her return.

Time meant nothing in The Pit, seconds, minutes, hours, days... it was all mushed together. Sleep was also irrelevant, what was the point of it, if it meant you may not wake up? Creatures that inhabited The Pit were savage, survival was all they knew. A death match was around every corner, so sleep in this land, was a luxury, one she couldn't afford to have. It didn't help that the very air they breathed was tainted with ergot, a fungus that caused anyone to breath it in, to hallucinate. And just like the warnings of her Zia... "It will take your nightmares and make them your allies, it will take your friends; and make them your enemies.", that exactly what happened. Twisted hallucinations of those she loved were those who wanted to kill her and those she despised were the one's that wanted to save her. The fungal spores overwhelmed her mind, trying to rip apart her sanity.

It will take your nightmares and make them your allies, it will take your friends; and make them your enemies.
It will take your nightmares and make them your allies, it will take your friends; and make them your enemies.

The only thing to keep her sanity at peace and her mind focused were two objects she carried into the hellish pit. One was the Emerald necklace that Ziccarra gave to her when she first became Matriarch. It was to remind her who she was, and what she why she had decided to face the deadly trials in the first place. She was Zeon Liafador, leader of the White Cardinal's, Matriarch of the Liafador Family, the Italian warrior was here to become stronger, to be able to protect her family, to ensure their safety so the family could enjoy peace in their lives, even at the sacrifice of her own. The second item was a seashell necklace her sister, Chance, gave her upon their meeting. It was to remind her why she needed to do more than just survive The Pit, but to keep her sanity. She needed to get out of this alive and well so she could be there for her younger sister if she ever needed her, to show compassion when needed and to be able to hold the love of a sister in her heart.

I was in the darkness, so darkness I became.
I was in the darkness, so darkness I became.

But doing so wasn't easy. With so many things trying to take your life, your mind and your very soul, you had no allies... except... the darkness. The darkness that shrouded her essence from blood thirsty beasts. The darkness that kept her company when her hallucinations were not around. The darkness that whispered promises of power and protection outside of The Pit, if she would only let it in. So darkness she became.

NOW

Arise from The Pit and claim your right
Arise from The Pit and claim your right

Her blood and mud stained hands clenched along the walls of The Pit, her fractured fingernails digging into the stone as every muscle fiber was working to pull The Matriarch from The Pit. The light of the sun was becoming brighter and more dominate over the darkness she had become so familiar with. It was unclear to Zeon how long she was in The Pit for, what events had passed and what events were to come. But one thing she knew for sure, she had gotten what she came from. With a final push of her legs and a grunting pull of her arms her hand reached out of the hellhole and grasped onto the soft, lush grass. White Cardinals that were guarding The Pit, surrounded the area as they watched their Matriarch arise.

Taking a stand before them showed just superficially what she had to endure. Her rags she wore into The Pit were gone, nothing but her naked body that was covered in dirty abrasions, infested talon like lacerations and gaping bite wounds with dry black blood that couldn't be told if it belonged to her or the creature that had attacked her. Her chestnut eyes naturally squinted at the sun as she rose her right hand to shade the brightness, her pupils having to adjust to seeing in the light once more as White Cardinals quickly placed a white robe over her bare body.

"Portami a casa , ho degli affari da sbrigare." <Take me home, I have business to attend to.>
