Superman #42 - This series is really surprising me. I had never read any of Yang's work and so far the "Truth" story line has been horrible, completely changing the character of Superman from who he is, (Last week's Superman/ Wonder Woman was the worst so far, and that's saying al ot). The main reason this is the only Superman title I still like is probably because he's still Superman here since its "Before Truth." .I'll probably drop the Superman title after it catches up and enters the world of "After Truth" but maybe Yang will surprise me a second time.
While Yang is the best writer on the Superman title, he is far from the best currently and Truth as been really good. SM/WW's last issue was great and Pak has been killing it on AC.... not so much BM/SM.
Regardless of the quality of each title, I find it ridiculous how some people are so hostile towards any degree of change. Regardless of the fact that this event has done nothing to alter, even slightly, the basic character traits that make Superman, well, Superman, people are still clamoring that DC has changed the character beyond repair???? Seriously?
It just goes to show that, to some people, ephemeral characteristics are everything; that appearance is everything. Superman is still Superman as long as he's wearing the cape on his shoulders, but as soon as you take away the cape, he ceases being Superman? Part of this story's importance is to show that Superman is more than just his powers and that, even if you remove most of the trappings we traditionally identify with the character, the core of who he is is a really good guy who wants to stand up for those who can't fight for themselves.
