Interview Part 2 for Witchblade's new creative team of Ron Marz, Laura Braga and Betsy Gonia

No Caption Provided

I just finished posting the second part of my interview with Ron Marz, Laura Braga, and Betsy Gonia about being the new creative team on Witchblade by Top Cow. You can read a snip-it of the interview along with a few preview images below, and head over to my blog for it in it's entirety.

How does it feel working for a company like Top Cow?

LB: It's great! I definitely love to work with everybody at Top Cow. And I've always loved the characters of Top Cow universe so, as a fan, it's amazing to have the chance to draw them.

GB: In general, it’s quite enjoyable to work for Top Cow. I find working at a smaller company to be more enjoyable than to be another cog in the machine of a large company. I feel a stronger sense of camaraderie and success when something goes well, but on the flipside, more stress and anxiety when there’s a large project to do or something goes wrong. Altogether it’s a good experience.

Witchblade is currently the longest running ongoing series with a female protagonist, and also Top Cows longest running series, How did you feel when you were asked to join the book? Were you intimidated, overwhelmed, ecstatic?

LB: I've always been a fan of Sara Pezzini and Witchblade, it's been one of the first comics I've read, so I'm really attached to this series. When I got the offer to draw one of my favorite female characters I felt really enthusiastic and excited.

GB: I actually sought to fill the colorist job for Witchblade when I first learned Top Cow would be changing the creative team for the book. It was an opportunity to bridge the gap between production work and creative work, and I intended to at least try to make that crossover. Once Laura Braga was established as the artist for the book, I colored some of her test pages and sent them to her for her feedback and opinion. Working from her critique, I adjusted my coloring style, and we worked together to create a style that we both enjoyed. Once that style was figured out, I sent the pages to Matt Hawkins and Marc Silvestri for review, and they agreed to let me color Witchblade. It was, and still is, incredibly exciting and humbling to color Witchblade, especially knowing the long-standing history of the book. I’m very grateful to be working on it!

You've both worked on some recent Cyber Force issues (Laura as an artist, and Betsy as a producer/editor). How is your approach different for Witchblade?

LB: My style is just the same, but Witchblade's settings and the atmospheres are very different from Cyber Force's. I just try to give the right tone to each story.

GB: Since I’m working as a creator on Witchblade now, I’m stepping away from any direct editorial work on it, unless I absolutely need to. However, having done some editorial work on other Top Cow titles has helped me edit and clarify my own work before I send it on to Ron, Laura, and Bryan Rountree for their reviews.

How does it feel working for a company like Top Cow?

RM: It's been home for me for a decade, so obviously it's a good fit. If you find something that works, you stick with it, so I think it's been a fruitful relationship for everyone involved. Top Cow gives me a lot of freedom in writing their characters, and has trusted me to expand the universe and evolve the characters.

How does it feel to finally be returning to Witchblade after almost 2 years?

RM: Like slipping back into a broken-in pair of jeans. Witchblade turned out to be a good fit for me, especially the character of Sara Pezzini. I definitely feel like I have more Witchblade stories to tell, so I'm very pleased to be getting a chance to tell them.

With Witchblade now in its 170th issue, not to include minis and cross-overs, How new reader friendly do you find issue #170 to be and the book as a whole going forward?

RM: A big part of my job as writer is to make sure the book is accessible. New readers are a vital aspect of keeping a series going. Someone who has never read an issue of Witchblade should be able to pick up #170 and get a pretty good idea of who's who and what's what. If they can't, I've failed in one of the basic responsibilities of the job.

How do you feel their style will look and feel in Sara Pezzini's world?

RM: You don't need me to say anything, the pages speak for themselves.

Interview and Preview of Top Cow's Bushido #1 by Rob Levin

No Caption Provided

I just finished posting my interview with Rob Levin about his creator-owned series Bushido by Top Cow. The first 3 issues released as a Digital Comic, and the last two issues along with the print issues will be released over the next 5 weeks in October. You can read a snip-it of the interview along with a few preview images below, and head over to my blog for it in it's entirety.

How does it feel working for a company like Top Cow?

Top Cow is where I began my career, as an intern and later as an editor, so I've been working for them in one capacity or another for almost ten years. I definitely have aspirations to do more creator-owned work and to get my hands on a few toys owned by other publishers, but Top Cow has always felt like home to me. I grew up reading their books, I spent several years shepherding some of their key titles like "Witchblade" and "The Darkness," and I feel tremendously humbled to have written several titles for them across the last four or so years.

What were some of your inspirations in creating Bushido? What sparked you to wanting to create this comic in the first place?

The idea was from Mikhail, Dick and Markus at Heroes & Villains, so they came to me with a treatment for the series and I gave my take on it, we workshopped and settled on the final and away I went. Samurai versus vampires -- what's not fun about that? I also saw the opportunity for a lot of character in the story, so I tried to focus on that while still delivering on the very action-y promise of the premise.

I hear that it will have a samurai (Kichiro) fighting vampires, pirates and others, what made you decide to go with this concept?

There are sort of pirates… I suppose. But maybe the sequel will have a lot more pirating, because that's now all I can think about. Again, this was an idea that was brought to me, I dug it, and they liked my take on the material.

Jessada Sutthi art is stunning. How did you two meet, and how easy was it to work with him?

He was found by Filip Sablik, who was still at Top Cow at the time, and as you said his work is stunning. We knew it was a chance to work with a fantastic artist who could bring a unique look to these characters and the world and jumped on him (not literally) when we heard he became available. He's located over in Thailand, so I mainly worked with the studio managers over at Studio Hive, where he's a resident artist. So while we never spoke directly, his team was easy to communicate and I think things came together pretty well.

Annuals Backup Post

Ok @pikahyper I think I've gotten all the 90's Annuals taken care of so here is the Rename/Alias list. Rename each to the name linked based on the indicia's I looked up, and add aliases where you can. Most of the aliases are based on the books cover, as that is how I personally would search for a book. It appears that it doesn't matter what order you type the words (ex; Hulk Annual 1998, and Hulk 1998 Annual both bring up The Incredible Hulk and Sub-Mariner Annual '98) they still come up in the alias therefore all of them might not be needed. Also your choice of how to name titles that have a / in them and if they should have a space before and after the /, the indicia appears to have spaces if that matters.

Sorry about the quantity but what has to be done has to be done. Oh and if somehow I forgot one, I'm sure somebody else will find it.

(Also I know we use the indicia for titles and this is how I have requested the rename, but it appears every other Annual on the site have "Annual" as part of the Volume name. Might have to double check to see if the indicia's shows with or without for the 47 pages of Annuals on the site.)

All-New X-Men #3

The flagship X-Book marches on! The original 5 X-Men are back, but that's not all that's happening. What happened to the Phoenix 5 from AVENGERS VS. X-MEN?

Why I Pull: I've read X-Titles since I started reading comics, and the sucker that I am will always pick up a new title. Not to say this isn't a good title because it is, and will be fun to see how they play out time travel so it doesn't effect the 616.

The Amazing Spider-Man #699

This is the MUST READ issue that turns over all the cards and reveals secrets that have been set as far back as ENDS OF THE EARTH, SPIDER-ISLAND, and 99 issues ago in ASM #600!

Doctor Octopus has hours left to live. He knows Peter Parker’s secret. He has no master plan—all he wants is vengeance. Which members of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery will heed Ock’s call to arms?

Special appearances by the Lizard, the Spider-Slayer, Morbius the Living Vampire, and some surprising Spidey Foes!

Why I Pull: This is the end of an era. Peter Parker will be Spider-man for only 1 more issue. This is a must read.

Avengers #1

The greatest heroes in comics together on one unbeatable team! Now shipping twice a month, the Avengers "go large," expanding their roster and their sphere of influence to a global and even interplanetary level. When Captain America puts out his call - who will answer? Big threats, big ideas, big idealism - these are the Avengers NOW!

Why I Pull: The definitive team in the Marvel Universe is the Avengers. With Marvel NOW! this is the starting point for a whole new era of Avengers greatness.

Avenging Spider-Man #15

Dell'otto drawing Devil Dinosaur? Done!

Why I Pull: I have always loved MAD's art style and seeing the first run of this series kept me coming back for more. I also have always loved Spider-man Team-ups, and this fits the bill nicely. Even better its Spider-man fighting a Dinosaur, who can't love that.

No Caption Provided

Deadpool #3

Deadpool vs. Dead Presidents…this time, TRICKY DICK NIXON! Can even Doctor Strange help the M w/the M? This is the Deadpool series you will marry someday!

Why I Pull: I have the Original Deadpool #1 framed on my wall. I will always check out a Deadpool series even if they are horrible like Deadpool Corps and Deadpool Pulp. Oh and did I mention again Deadpool vs. Dead Presidents.

Hawkeye #5

THE TAPE CONCLUDES!

Someone has a deadly secret will change the course of Hawkeye’s relationship with the Avengers.

Why I Pull: I was never really into Hawkeye because I didn't read the Avengers. That all changed when I read Bullseye's run in Dark Reign: Hawkeye, and the Hawkeye & Mockingbird series.

Iron Man #3

The new Iron Man stealth armor debuts! The most subtle Iron Man armor of all time!

Deep in Columbia the daughter of a cartel boss is "modified" by EXTREMIS.

Will villains VIBRO, FIREBRAND and THE LIVING LASER stop Tony from doing what he must to save the world from the deadly nano-virus?

An all-new era for Tony Stark from the best-selling UNCANNY X-MEN team of Kieron Gillen and Greg Land!

Why I Pull: Again one of the titles I had only picked up originally during crossovers. But after the movies I decided to give Iron Man a go. I can say I'm not disappointed. With Marvel NOW things are only getting started.

Punisher: War Zone #2

Kings take Castle. Now its his move!

It takes more than bullets to take out the Avengers' biggest guns.

Why I Pull: I honestly have never been able to get into Punisher. I just didn't feel the book, or the writing I'm never sure. But being a tie-in with the Avengers and possible lead into Punisher on the Thunderbolts I had to pick this one up.

Red She-Hulk #60

VS. THE AVENGERS!!!

Red She-Hulk = National Threat!

What shocking discovery does Machine Man make about the future of super-humans?

Why I Pull: While some of the original Hulk run with General Ross seemed dry and on occasion out in left field, I've always liked the Red She-Hulk character and have decided to give the new Marvel NOW title a chance.

Thunderbolts #1

Red Hulk, Venom, Elektra, Deadpool, the Punisher. Forget the courts, the jails, the system - this team of Thunderbolts fights fire with fire, targeting the most dangerous and lethal players in the Marvel Universe with extreme prejudice. Led by General "Thunderbolt" Ross, AKA the Red Hulk, this hand-picked team of like-minded operatives is going to make the world a better place...by all means necessary.

Why I Pull: Again like the Avengers I had never heard of this title. It was the Dark Avengers during Osborn's Dark Reign that got me hooked. While I don't really care for Elektra, and Punisher, and Red Hulk occasionally comes off dry, I do love me some Deedpool and Venom.

Ultimate Comics Ultimates #18.1

Can America recover after the dramatic events of United We Stand?

President Cap takes charge!

Thor's momentous decision!

Perfect jumping on point for new readers!

Why I Pull: Marvel has done a great job with their Ultimate Universe. Basically any title they put our in it I'll buy. This is the Avengers but in a universe where actions have real and lasting consequences.

Wolverine MAX #2

Meet Victor Creed!

As Logan investigates the crash that wiped his memory, he uncovers things about his past he didn't want to know!

Why I Pull: Again anything X-Men gets my Pull. I'm not always a fan of MAX titles but being issue #2 I'm still holding out to see if this title changes my opinion.

X-Factor #248

A familiar face hovers between life and death.

The only one who can save them is Monet…but it will require reliving the most horrific experience of her life.

Why I Pull: X-Book, I love X-factor because it doesn't play to the normal Super-hero team book. They do thing a little differently.

X-Men #39

Domino teams up with Daredevil to take down Armitage!

Action! Adventure! Romance!?

But whose side will Domino take in the end?

Why I Pull: Another X-Book so it gets pulled. Probably the X-Titles that has all of my favorite characters in it. From Domino and Jubilee to Colossus and Storm, this books great.

Action Comics #15

Superman is on trial for his life – and the jury is the Anti-Superman Army! It’s the ultimate villains springing the ultimate trap at the end of time itself!

And the mystery that has built since issue #1 is resolved as the Little Man’s true identity is revealed – with grave consequences!

Plus, in the backup feature: A crucial piece of information is revealed!

Why I Pull: I have never been a big DC reader but Superman was a comic I'd occasionally pull. With the New 52, this was a great time to jump on. Action Comics is doing a great job of showing the early ears of Superman in Metropolis, give some background to the reboot.

Batwing #15

Batwing and Dawn battle Father Lost in the streets of Tinasha!

Father Lost’s new powers are proving too much for Batwing and his new ally…time for a last ditch effort that might just get them both killed!

Why I Pull: With the New 52 reboot I picked up all the Bat Books. So far I can say Batwing has not disappointed.

Before Watchmen: Comedian #4

“All I could see was red. Then I saw the white and the blue. And the pinko.”

And don’t miss the latest sensational chapter of the CRIMSON CORSAIR, from writer and artist JOHN HIGGINS.

Why I Pull: I had not idea who or what Watchmen were until the Movie. From that one event I'm not hooked. This is a must read of anyone who has never read anything about the Watchmen or for the longtime readers to get more background on The Comedian.

Before Watchmen: Minutemen #5

“Why is mommy crying, Uncle Hollis?”

And don’t miss the latest chapter of the “Crimson Corsair” backup feature from writer/artist JOHN HIGGINS!

Why I Pull: I had not idea who or what Watchmen were until the Movie. From that one event I'm not hooked. This is a must read of anyone who has never read anything about the Watchmen or for the longtime readers to get more background on The Minutemen.

Detective Comics #15

A “DEATH OF THE FAMILY” tie-in!

What has The Joker done with The Penguin?

Guest-starring Poison Ivy and Clayface!

Plus: In the backup story, learn the secret way to make it as a super criminal in Gotham City.

Why I Pull: Batman is the definitive anti-hero. Dark and mysterious and willing to go the extra mile to bring down the villain. Detective Comics separates itself from other Bat Books in that it shows Batman using his skills and training to discover the clues and take down the villain. Being a Death Of The Family Tie-in makes this a must.

Dial H #7

A new storyline begins as Nelson and Manteau are off to Europe in search of a relic that might hold the answer to their secret powers!

Meanwhile, a powerful stranger arrives in Littleville to await their return.

Why I Pull: One of the second wave of New 52 I decided to give the title a try. I'm still on the fence but with a new story arch only time will tell.

Earth 2 #7

Who is Hawkgirl? The secret is revealed!

Mr. Terrific makes his first appearance on Earth 2 since he left our world!

Don’t miss the aftermath of “THE GRUNDY APOCALYPSE!”

Why I Pull: Another second wave title. I usually like Multiple universes as long as they don't go over the top and have waaaayy too many (as DC is found of). My hope is they treat Earth 2 similar to how Marvel treats Ultimate in that actions have lasting consequences, ie; you won't see hero's dying and coming back 10 issues later.

Green Arrow #15

Ollie begins a downward spiral as he slowly loses everything!

Betrayed and alone after the loss of Q-Corps, can the Emerald Archer hold on to his arsenal?

Why I Pull: While others have mixed feelings about Green Arrow I have personally enjoyed it. Again not knowing a lot about DC beforehand the New 52 gave me the chance to start over. I started reading this book because of the notion that Green Arrow was a mix of Batman and Hawkeye. With the New TV show and writer/artists changing soon I'm ready to see where this title goes.

Human Bomb #1
Ex-Marine and war veteran Michael Taylor discovers a conspiracy to use human bombs to destroy the United States! But how can he possibly stop them when he could be their ultimate bomb?

Why I Pull: Being a Mini-series it makes it easier. While I know little about Freedom Fighters the reviews I've seen online recommend this as a definite pull.
No Caption Provided
Stormwatch #15

Midnighter: enemy of Stormwatch?

The manipulations of the Shadow Lords have turned members of the team against each other! Is this the beginning of the end as we saw it in issue #0?

Why I Pull: I was a huge fan of Wildstorm in the 90s and with the release of DC's New 52 decided to give this book a try as I never read it from Wildstorm. It has been hit and miss so far and is one of the titles canceled I may not miss it.

Worlds' Finest #7

Robin begrudgingly helps Huntress track down the threat to Wayne Enterprises, but little do they realize that threat is actually tracking them!

Meanwhile, Power Girl continues to explore the connection between Earth 2, Apokolips and this Earth, only to find herself in a stand-off with...a bunch of heavily armed 10-year-olds?!

Why I Pull: Another 2nd Wave comic. Coming from the the events in the first issue of Earth-2, Huntress and Powergirl are now on our Earth. It's good to see a strong super heroine book.

Doctor Who #3
First issue in a special two-part story featuring the art of Philip Bond! The stress from their past few adventures have the Doctor and Rory at each other's throats, and Amy has had just about enough. So she sends them on a boys night out, must to their chagrin, but with a TARDIS at their disposal.

Why I Pull: A friend at work turned me on to Doctor Who. I've been hooked ever since. I decided to check out the comic and lets just say IDW is doing a great job keeping the Whovian in me satisfied during the Winter mid-season break.

Things are finally coming to a head between DARKLON and DESTRO! With the two adversaries confronting each other for the first time in years, things could get out of control-fast! Meanwhile, G.I. JOE is in trouble: CLUTCH and ROCK N' ROLL are trapped in COBRA's new HQ and a new mission in Benzheen takes a turn for the worse! The villains reign supreme in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #185!

Why I Pull: I'm really not sure why I keep getting this one. Maybe nastalgia. I personally don't think the stories are as good as IDW reboot, the page layouts while true to the original Marvel series doesn't impress, but I keep coming back for more.
