Vai smiled a little and shut the system down the rest of the way. "I hope that gave you a little of what you were wanting, a little closure maybe." She offered. Vai motioned for him to follow her out of the room now that it had filled its purpose and took him up to an observation deck that gave them a three hundred and sixty degree view of the ocean around them and the yacht's gentle movements through the gradually rolling waves. "For now, I think maybe it's best if you try to put the past behind you for, I dunno, twenty four hours or so. One of the reasons I chose to meet you out here is because it's not close to anything, no reminders, a real chance to break away."

Vai went to a built in mini-fridge and removed a series of trays and other items containing various fruits and healthy snacks which she set out on the bar for him. "I don't really know what you prefer...and I'm not much of an omnivore, so I just had my chef pick out a few items and send them up. I hope something here suits you."

Vai considered him a moment and pulled out a stool for him at the alcohol-less bar. She moved behind the bar, gathering a pair of glasses and a series of flavors together.

Vai smiled. "Why thank you kind sir." She motioned for him to follow her and headed into the interior of the ship. She didn't say more while they walked and led him through a couple of corridors before they arrived inside of a room that was nothing but black. Inside were a pair of headsets with cords reaching back to the wall behind them that seemed long enough to allow significant freedom of movement. "This is a virtual combat room. I use it for training...and for video games." The door sealed shut behind them and she lifted one of the headsets off of the wall. "This headset reads your synapses and detects your movements and actions and translates them into the virtual world. It can also read into your intentions once it gets used to your body and make suggestions as to possible moves to achieve your goals."

She smiled and handed the headset to him. "Come on Landon, I think it's time to take you to another place and let your worries and fears melt away for a few hours. Put it on and I'll get the program started. Might want to strip down to a little less attire, I've head mammals play around with it before and all the fighting tends to build up quite the sweat."

She walked to the opposite wall and opened a hidden panel to reveal a control console. "So tell me your fantasy Landon and I'll build it for you...whatever world you want, any place, any time...as long as it will help you."

Vai smiled and left his side to retrieve a pair of glasses and a wine bottle from a deck table. She filled each glass and returned to him, handing one to him. "The wine is your problems and your mistakes over the last few months." She raised her glass as she spoke and then, she toss d it, glass and all, into the sea. "Your turn when you're ready."

She touched his arm reassuringly. "You can do it. That Bottle is the last bottle of alcohol on the boat, much to my chagrin. We'll find other things to do, different ways to take your mind off your troubles and find a place from which you can move forward. This boat is stacked, gaming rooms, theater, swimming pools, a ski boat, a small golf course...eve everything you can cram into it."

She removed her hand and turned to look out at the passing ocean again while she waited for him to privately work up the courage and desire to do as shed suggested. Vai didn't seem to have any concerns just now other than him and, in truth, she didn't, she was focused on helping her friend. She smiled a little to herself and partially unfurled her wings to let them soak in the Ray's of the beautiful sun and warm her cold blooded body.

"One thing about life Landon is we will always make mistakes...it's never the mistakes that matter, it's how we recover and how we learn from them that matters. We can always come back but we can't always do it alone. I'm here to help you through it if you're ready." Vai smiled a little and shifted her gaze to watch him.

"If you're not, I'm still here for you because that's how friends work where I come from. It's the same reason my mother never accused you of the things you accuse yourself of and why your spot in Unity is always and still yours. I don't want to be friends with someone that thinks they're perfect."

Vai shook her head a little. "Landon someone in your life is helping you down the wrong path. Stay on my boat with me for a few days or a week and let's see if we can't clear your head."

Vai smiled and turned to face Landon. "It's good to see you again. I've heard you've been through some difficult times but you're a friend, you're always welcome here or anywhere else I happen to own." She motioned for him to come up beside her near the bow railing. "I want you to try to relax here though, I don't want to offer you any lectures or bits of advice...I think...maybe you've had a lot of that already. Instead I'm just willing to listen, anything you want to talk about, anything you have to say, I'm here for you."

She leaned forward and rested her arms on the railing again, once more looking out at the ocean. "You know it's funny, my mother hates the ocean, she says it makes her uncomfortable...it's why she always takes a jet or helicopter to go over seas." She glanced over at him, her artificial green eyes concealing as ever her inner thoughts. "She's worried about you. We all are...she's just...really bad at expressing it sometimes. I think it has something to do with spending most of her life as a soldier, it's hard for her to connect with Humans...and...honestly...with people in general. You should talk to her sometime though, she's been through it herself." Her smile faded a little. "You two have more in common than you might know."

Vai put an invitation out to Landon using the Unity network. He could teleport to her private yacht if he so desired where she hoped to meet with him. Vai waited for him, standing at the bow of the ship, leaning forward over the prow and watching the waters go by. She was dressed in little more than a white bikini and held an alcoholic drink in one hand. She sipped from the drink and thought back to the last time she'd seen Landon.

He was so devastated and he sort of...ran off. From what I hear he's really fallen apart, turning to booze and females rather than trying to sort things out. Maybe I can help him, get him away from his usual distractions and just sit down and talk for awhile. I'm sure with enough careful support from his friends we can get back the Landon we know rather than the Landon we have now.

She sighed and finished her drink before she tossed the empty glass into the sea. "No more of you for tonight." She said aloud. It took a great deal to get her drunk, she was far more concerned with the temptation being around for Landon.

"Mom?" Vai asked as she left her car in the rain. Her mother was walking in silence and hadn't come home at the expected time. Fortunately they had a means of tracking one another and Vai had soon located her. She walked from the super car and approached her mother.

"Something is wrong." Xae said quietly.

"I know." Vai said. I've been saying that for years. You're mind is...it feels wrong. You should be sharper than you are. "Tell me about it?" She asked hopefully. It was always answered with a shrug.

This time was different though.

"Someone has done something to my mind, whenever I try to focus on very specific things there's this...painful haze, it drops me back down to a less alert state...where I'm..."

"More likely to go out and kill bad guys." Vai finished for her. "I've never felt it...until recently. Except mine's not a haze, it's a male."

She produced a flash drive from her pocket. "He always comes by when I'm thinking about working on this. He's always wanting my attention, be it sex or something else and it always distracts me and I always, always put it down. I finally managed to get away from him, got on our Yacht and went out to sea and looked it up. It's full of words I've had my home computer searching for for months...or more specifically...it's not full of them."

She pressed it into her mother's palm and the data instantly transferred to Xae through her suit.

"Unity." Xae said.

Vai nodded. "The word has been removed...it's like someone scrubbed it from the English language...except in a few places where it lingers as part of some other word. Unification, for example."

Xae handed the drive back to her. "Yetyouknewtolookforit."

"Actually that's the thing, I'd never heard of the word either, but one day it just sort of popped into my mind and it kept doing it at random moments. So...I started looking for it." Vai said.

"Vai I won't be able to focus long enough to deal with this...it's on you to find out what's going on until I can recover a little."

Vai frowned and cocked her head. "How though? I'm no Protector."

Xae put a hand on her shoulder and squeezed gently. "You are my daughter, you'll find a way." Xae said. "I need to go to my lab, maybe there I can clear my head."

Vai nodded a little and watched her mom walk off.

How am I supposed to get access to information as just a civilian? She looked down at the flash drive for a moment. Well...there might be one way...

"Why do you waste your time on internal combustion engines?" Vai looked up from her work towards the male in the doorway.

"Girl's gotta have hobbies." She said and returned to messing with the wiring harness.

"Thought I was your hobby." He joked as he walked into the room and shut the door.

"Don't flatter yourself." She jerked the wiring harness free and cast it into a nearby trash can. "Girl's gotta have boys too."

"Well this particular boy of yours brought you another one of those reports you've been asking for." He said and moved up behind her. He slid his hands down her body and slipped a flash drive into the ass pocket of her jeans. "and he has a little time too."

She smiled and leaned over the car to access something on the other side of the engine, all to his benefit...and hers.

"Nice." He smirked and dropped his hands to her hips. "So what's on your mind so much that we're wasting my lunch break talking?"

Vai cocked her head slightly and smirked a bit. She straightened up and set her tool down before she turned to face him. "It's nothing. How did you even know something was on my mind?"

"Because you've been distracted for weeks." He said.

"Sorry." Vai apologized. She reached towards her back pocket and he stopped her with a hand on her wrist.

"Come on, just leave it alone for now. The files aren't going anywhere." He said. "I am though, in about twenty minutes."

She cocked her head again and moved her hand away from her pocket. "It's just that when something bugs me I like to try and get it taken care of before it drives me crazy you know?"

"I see...and what IS bugging you?" He asked.

"Oh...I don't know. I mean, I have my boys, I have my toys, my mom is happy..." She shrugged. "We live in a perfect world, what's not to like? You're right...I can look at it later." She smiled and leaned forward, her hand reached his waist line and then dropped lower. "It's mating season anyway." She whispered into his ear. Vai allowed herself to give in to her body's naturally increased desires and her friend's insistence on not wasting his lunch break. For the next twenty minutes Vai was perfectly happy, more than happy. She ignored her curiosity, ignored the question that had been whispering at the back of her mind for weeks.

When he left later Vai collected her clothing and pulled the flash drive out of her pocket. She looked at it for a moment, shrugged and set it on the work bench nearby. Vai was happy.

@kaede_:

Vai smiled and shrugged. "I have a lot of time, don't worry about it." She cocked her head slightly. She's not kidding, Kaede looks all of of ten, maybe eleven years old. "Your friend is concerned that you don't know how to defend yourself if you're attacked. She said you're something of a pacifist and that you'd be more inclined to dodge and avoid than actively engage. I can teach you to do that, to redirect an opponent and avoid their attacks rather than hope someone is there to stop them for you."

Vai motioned towards the rest of the arboretum. "Maybe we can take a walk and talk about things a little bit?" My mother would love this place, and it would torture her. "I was just thinking while I was waiting that this place looks great. I wish I could get my mother out here but...well, I don't know how good it would really be for her. I think..." She smiled and traced her fingers over the leaf of a nearby tree. "I think she's not ready for that yet. So, anyway, enough about me. Tell me a little about you, I only know the little but your friend told me and what I've seen on Unity's videos of your actions in Africa and elsewhere."

@kaede_

Vai stood in the arboretum with her hands clasped neatly behind her back, a smirk on her face as she imagined the look on Kaede's face when she found out why the billionaire was visiting. The Custodian was always worried about her friends and their well being and had seen, more than once, that Kaede had no idea how to defend herself.

So a few phone calls were made and here she was, waiting for Kaede to make the usual appearance. Just to speed things a long though Vai spoke to the plant life at large, aware that in some way Kaede was connected to it and aware of all that went on here.

"Kaede, can you come here please? We have a few things I'd like to talk about and something to arrange. I'll just wait here until you're ready, no need to rush whatever else you might be doing right now."
