After a slow and steady increase in the number of opponents they face wielding adamantium, the X-Men begin to realise something's up. The Uncanny Team have taken on adamantium sentinels and the Jean Grey School has been besieged by the Hand (with adamantium weaponry/some armour). After defeating their corresponding opponents they separately attempt to get to the bottom of it. Wolverine and Rachel Grey travel to Japan where after some brawling and interrogation they uncover that the Hand has fallen under the command of King Pin and that it's a splinter-cell that desires revenge on Wolverine that was responsible for the attack.
The Uncanny team meanwhile is faced with a pile of scrap metal after Magneto destroyed the adamantium sentinels, with no other leads, Cyclops turns to SHIELD Liason Dazzler for answers, she knows nothing but recommends they get in touch with Longshot as he can read the history of objects, however he can't be traced even using Cerebro. They can't see Monet due to her affiliation, Darwin, Siryn, Rictor and Shatterstar are seemingly untraceable, Magneto and Cyclops mutually agree they'd rather not deal with Polaris/Havok when Magik suggests another member of X-Factor they could question, one who could even take them to Longshot. She's referring to Strong Guy, current Lord of Hell. Cyclops is offended that Magik has never mentioned that another mutant has taken possession of a demon realm. Strong Guy is begrudging to assist them, barely recognising the team and barely caring having more pressing matters to deal with, he faces the constant ridicule, detestment and assaults from the other Hell Lords who are upset that he has usurped power so suddenly. Their anger is similarly bestowed by the demons for Magik, and the Uncanny team find themselves in the middle of a battle between hells, which Strong Guy wins with their help. Strong Guy agrees to transport the team to Longshot on the condition Magik remains with him, to better him in his role as a ruler of Hell. Cyclops refuses, but Magik accepts noting that if Strong Guy didn't assert himself over the realms, the demons could venegfully turn on mutantkind. The Uncanny team is thus transported to an alternate dimension in the midst of one of Longshots dimension hopping adventures. In this universe Mr. Sinister runs a close to global empire using celestial technology and although the team attempts to save it, they are fighting an uphill struggle and are consistently outplayed by Sinister until the team agrees simply to retreat back to their own universe with as many refugees as possible. Back at their base, the refugees begin to settle in and they are about to finally get Longshot to read the adamantium when they realise it's gone. Then their base explodes.
Whilst Wolverine and Rachel are away, the school is greeted by Legion who is injured and on the run. The staff learn little about what's going on before Abyss teleports into the school and almost gets his hands on Legion who is saved by Kitty Pride phasing herself and Legion through the floor. The X-men attack Abyss only for Random, Fatale and Crimson Commando to burst from his chest. After a drawn out fight, both Kitty and Legion are eventually tricked into being sucked inside Abyss and the enemy makes their escape, though not before Legion telepathically whispers the word 'Alchemy' to Quire. Wolverine and Rachel manage to subdue the threat of the splinter-cell group and return to the School at about the same time Cyclop's team and what interdimensional refugees survived also turn up, Magneto having managed to shield those within close enough proximity from the explosion. Explaining the situation, a momentary truce is agreed upon between the two groups is agreed upon and Wolverine hands over the sword of one of the Hand ninja's to Longshot who reveals its origin. A young man is trapped in the dark dimension within Abyss, forced to use his mutant powers to turn everything presented to him into adamantium which is collected together and sold to every major group with a desire to hurt the X-Men, there's a brief glimpse of Mr. Sinisters face, then Longshot collapses comatose.
The rest of the event is a team-up to stop Mr. Sinister, (who has Abyss bomb the Uncanny base) and is in the process of starting a criminal empire he could use to gain a hold of a real empire as in the alternate dimension blah blah too much writing I gotta go study you got the gist.
