I saw no issue with wanton destruction. It's a movie device to put the film on par with the competition. It's not like Supes is exactly in love with humanity in this flick. It's step one. The enemy took the fight to metropolis. The enemy took the fight to smallville, and Supes' mother (awesome scene btw.) Overall, I really think the film was beautifully done. The beginning was emotionally tearing, Costner was superb as Pa Kent, and Cavil did well frankly, with the moments of silence where we had to be inside of his head. Overall the film worked, and worked well.
As for the next (cross fingers)....
I don't want Lex as the main villain yet, but lets make him a figure. We already see that in this universe, Lex is likely the mogul Lex (easter egg on teh truck) I'd like to see Lex starting up an anti alien campaign from his position of corporate and political power, but only as a background plot.
I'd like to see Brainiac as the villain. Let's keep things someone Krypton related for another film here.
I'd also like to see Clark Kent go a little nerdier (he might) and continue to deal with the issues humans like that face every day.
Yes, I'd like to see superman making the small save once or twice and reaching out to kids a bit more. Save the cat in the tree as it were. Do something every day heroes do. Superman has always done that to illustrate the heroism doesn't take powers, only a good heart. Small scale can show that pretty dang well.
