Favorite X-Men Stories

I first started reading X-Men comics in the late 80's, I had only read a handful of issues before I really jumped on when I read X-Men #1 from 1991.

I've been a fan ever since. Sure, not every issue has been a home run, and there were spans where I just couldn't get into them anymore *cough* Morrison *cough* Austen *cough*

But there are some stories that hold a special place in my heart, and honestly there are no comics I enjoy more than a good issue of X-Men.

This is a list of some of my favorite single issues.

List items

  • Jim Lee, Chris Claremont, and one of the best X team lineups ever. This is what really got me on board as a fan.

  • Without this one, my favorite mutants would not have existed.

  • Professor X gathers a new team to rescue the X-Men from a mysterious enemy. And it will take all of them to survive.

  • Trapped within Magneto's base, the X-Men fight for their freedom against Magneto. Can they pull together and defeat the man who has already beaten them?

  • The X-Men vs Proteus. The team is pitted against a power mad young mutant with the ability to warp reality. Someone isn't walking away from this one.

  • Kitty Pryde is all alone on Christmas Eve, but that's the least of her problems.

  • The team falls against the Hellfire Club, and they are taken prisoner. Except for Wolverine who they believe to be dead.

"Okay suckers, you've taken yer best shot -- now it's my turn!"

  • Another early issue for me, it came out around the time when my love for x-comics was kicking into high gear.

  • To save their fellow mutants, The Morlocks, the X-Men head into the tunnels to take on a team of killers known as the Murauders.

  • X-Tinction Agenda is one of my favorite story arcs. The X-Men, X-Factor, and the New Muntants are in an all out war against Hodge and the island nation of Genosha, who want to see them enslaved or destroyed.

  • The X-Men and X-Factor have come together again, this time against the deadly Shadow King.

  • No big fights here, no world ending menace, nothing that promises to change the world forever, just a very good story.

  • The early 90's was a great time to be an X-Men fan, and issues like this are another reason I loved this book so much.

  • If you're a fan of the X-Men,and you don't know what happens in this issue, do yourself a favor and find a copy. Things happen in this issue that set groundwork that effected the X-Men for years to come.

  • An amazing and intimate look into the past and inner thoughts of Professor Charles Xavier.

  • A must read for Cyclops fans. I've always wondered why characters who were related didn't get together more often, and this father/son issue makes me think of my own Dad.

  • Fatal Attractions had its share of shocking moments, and what happens to Wolverine in this issue left him a different man for a long time.

  • With all of the bad things that happened leading up to this issue, this was a nice change of pace. The marriage that was meant to be finally happens as Scott and Jean tie the knot. And if you ask me, they should have left them this way.

  • This is one of those stories that has held a special place in my heart. Everything in this issue was great, and it remains one of my favorite stories ever.

  • The shocking return of an X-Man thought dead. The page where it happens is worth the price of the issue.
