@aphillips17: Yes, but he was not created "to be" Captain America, he was part of other completely different story and origin. Kirby used the Captain archetype, but it was not an story created to use Steve Rogers.

@shroudofsorrow: It is a interesting list, I have not very well versed in the Star wars canon beyond the movies, so any opinion will be very biased.

I had doubts about Darth Vader being the prototype to the tragic villian archetype. I can consider him being iconic, but as an archetype, I not totally sure. But the thought about it is growing on me. I will meditate about it.

Anyway, if it works for you, go ahead. It is a great list.
