Accolades

(Ch. 146) There are three ways to become a Captain of the 13 Court Guards squads:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 155) Shunsui is described as being in a class of his own and being transcendent in combat by General Captain Genryusai Yamamoto:

(Ch. 335) Shunsui uses both a katana and a wakizashi in battle and although he is ambidextrous with differently timed swings in each hand, he was able to switch his swings and swaps mid-fight and impress the Primero Espada Coyote Starrk:

(Ch. 520) After the death of Genryusai Yamamoto, Shunsui is promoted to Captain General and the Captain of First Company in his stead:

Soul Reaper Basics

(Ch. 49) As a Soul Reaper, Shunsui materializes spirit energy from his own soul and manifests it into his zanpaku-to:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 35) Reiraku are spirit ribbons, manifestations of spiritual energy, that a good Soul Reaper can sense and a great one can even grab. Being able to sense reiraku allows a Soul Reaper to locate beings with high spiritual power and even track them:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 105) In Bleach, a battle between two people is a battle of spiritual power. If one opponent's spiritual power isn't strong enough, they can't even cut a stronger opponent. This is displayed and described by Kenpachi Zaraki when he let's Ichigo Kurosaki get in a free cut during their fight. Ichigo swings as hard as he can but doesn't scratch Kenny and even his hands start to bleed:

(Ch. 187) Although a Soul Reaper's zanpaku-to and spiritual power and directly related, meaning the bigger the zanpaku-to the more spiritual power, Captain-class Soul Reapers know how to hone their blades down to manageable sizes, otherwise they'd be swinging around swords the size of buildings:

Zanpaku-To

Shikai

(Ch. 120) All zanpaku-to have two releases, shikai and bankai. Shikai is the first release and occurs when a Soul Reaper calls out their sword's name and along with bankai, needs to be mastered in order to become a Captain:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 127) The essence of Shikai is to communicate and synchronize with your zanpaku-to:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 156) Shunsui's zanpaku-to is named Katen Kyokotsu, Flower Heaven Bone of Madness, and when he activates his Shikai his two blades become scimitar-shaped weapons:

(Ch. 156) Katen Kyokotsu is one of the only two two bladed zanpaku-to in Soul Society:

(Ch. 374) Shunsui's Katen Kyokotsu can turn child's games into reality and anyone inside the realm of his spiritual pressure is subject to the rules his zanpaku-to make, even himself:

No Caption Provided

Kage Oni

(Ch. 374) Kage Oni, or Shadow Demon, is a "game" where if you get your shadow stepped on, you lose and you die. Since Katen Kyokotsu can turn child's games into reality, if Shunsui uses Kage Oni he can attack an opponent through their shadow:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 373/374) Shunsui uses Kage Oni to stab Coyote Starrk, hiding in the shadows to creep behind him and stab him with Katen Kyokotsu:

(Ch. 374) With Kage Oni, Shunsui stabs Katen Kyokotsu into a shadow in order to attack Coyote Starrk:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 645) Shunsui uses both the Boghidharma and Kage Oni to try and take the Sternritter Lille Barro off-guard:

(Ch. 646) Shunsui can create at least seven clones from his shadow with Kage Oni, and uses these to distract the Sternritter Lille Barro, having all of them jump on top of him while the real Shunsui stabbed Lille from the back:

Iro Oni

(Ch. 374) In the game Iro Oni, or Color Demon, you can only cut the color you say out loud. The game is set up to where the riskier the color is for the attacker, the more damage it does to the enemy:

(Ch. 374) Shunsui cuts Coyote Starrk's arm while playing his "game" Iro Oni. To Starrk it felt as if his arm had been cut off but he was only nicked by the attack:

(Ch. 374/375) Shunsui takes off his white coat so that he's only wearing all black and says the color "black" in order to strike and defeat Coyote Starrk:

Bodhidharma

(Ch. 645) Bodhidharma is a game very much like "Red Light, Green Light", where the person who is "it" shields their eyes and looks back while saying the words "Bodhidharma has fallen down" and whoever is caught moving is captured. The three rules to the game are: the captor must be somewhere that he can be seen by all the players, the players lose if they are seen moving by the captor, and the players win if they touch the captor before he sees them:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 645) This game and technique are described more by the Sternritter Lille Barro, where the attack by the spiritual pressure given off by the person who is "it" can always be seen and in order to touch the one who is "it", you are able to travel across the path of that person's spiritual pressure in the shortest distance possible while the person who is "it" sees a static illusion in place of the real person:

(Ch. 645) While Lille Barro points out that Shunsui leaves an illusion in place of his real body in order to trick him, Shunsui tells him he's wrong. He is able to solidify his own spiritual pressure and leave it in order to trick his opponent, creating a solid "afterimage" of himself:

(Ch. 644) Shunsui uses this ability to figure out where Lille Barro is and attack him from behind:

(Ch. 645) Shunsui uses both the Boghidharma and Kage Oni to try and take the Sternritter Lille Barro off-guard:

(Ch. 646) The rules of the game dictate that should you ever take your eyes off of Shunsui and see his shadow, you'll then be looking at nothing but the shadow and give Shunsui the chance to get behind you to attack:

Kage Okuri

(Ch. 645) Kage Okuri, or Shadow Projection, is a technique that allows Shunsui to create an afterimage of himself. It's based on a game where you stare closely at a shadow and project it to another location:

Busho Goma

(Ch. 362) Shunsui uses Busho Goma, Wobbly Top, to send wind blades flying at Coyote Starrk which wrapped around him and created a sort of tornado of wind which made Starrk lose sight of him and allowed Shunsui to get above him:

Bankai

(Ch. 120) Bankai is the second release of a Soul Reaper's zanpaku-to and in general, increases the users power by five to ten times. Even if you have exceptional skill and talent, mastering bankai can still take a Soul Reaper up to and at least ten years:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 127) Where Shikai is the essence of communicating and synchronizing with one's zanpaku-to, bankai requires a Soul Reaper to externalize the zanpaku-to and force it into submission. It usually takes at least ten years for this training because the zanpaku-to needs to be summoned to our world:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 162) According to Byakuya Kichiki, only the most experienced Soul Reapers can achieve bankai:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 647) Shunsui's bankai is called Katen Kyokotsu Karamatsu Shinju, or Flower Heaven Crazed Bone Spirit Withered Pine Love Suicide. Shunsui holds his Shikai towards the ground to activate this, which causes black, root-like tendrils to spread out from him as his zanpaku-to appears behind him:

(Ch. 648) When Shunsui activated his bankai, everyone on the same large city as him felt the effects immediately, believing that the sky turned dark and the temperature dropped severely. Chad called it the chills, Orihime couldn't stop shivering, and even Ichigo Kurosaki started to sweat from feeling Shunsui's spiritual pressure:

Tameraikizu no Wakachiai

(Ch. 648) The first "act" of Shunsui's bankai is Tameraikizu no Wakachiai, The Sharing of Pain, and makes it so any wounds inflicted on Shunsui by his opponent of from Shunsui to his opponent are shared between them. Shunsui already had a portion of his right shoulder and a part on his left side blown through by the Sternritter Lille Barro's attack beforehand, and once Shunsui used this ability, Lille Barro received the same wounds. Shunsui does say, though, that you can't die from the sharing of wounds:

Zanki no Shitone

(Ch. 648) The second "act" of Shunsui's bankai is Zanki no Shitone, The Pillow of Shame, and makes anyone who regrets wounding their enemy fall to the floor from shame and suffer an incurable disease. Since Lille Barro had injured Shunsui before and was now being hurt himself from Tameraikizu no Wakachiai, he "regretted" injuring Shunsui and so was covered with black spots, making him bleed profusely:

Dangyo no Fuchi

(Ch. 648) The third "act" of Shunsui's bankai is Dangyo no Fuchi, The Abyss, and it summons a massive amount of water that engulfs both Shunsui and his target. Both parties remain in the water until one of them runs out of reiatsu and drowns:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 649) No matter how many times Lille Barro flapped his wings and tried to fly to the surface, he couldn't escape the water:

Itokiribasami Chizome no Nodobue

(Ch. 649) Shunsui winds a white thread around his opponent's throat multiple times before pulling it taut, leaving a deep cut in their throat that expands before blowing up their head:

Kido

Kido are spells in the Bleach verse and can be used regardless of a Soul Reaper's zanpaku-to abilities. It's basically the magic of the verse.

Hado 78

(Ch. 647) Shunsui uses Hado 78 Zangerin, Slicing Flower Ring, to forge a kido blade that blows the top off of a large building:

Strength

(Ch. 106) Shunsui knocks away Chad Yasutora's Arm Cannon attack with his bare hand:

(Ch. 389) Shunsui cracks a barrier that Aizen Sosuke erected to protect himself:

Speed

(Ch. 106) Shunsui dodges four of Chad Yasutora's Arm Cannon attacks, and Chad was incredibly surprised because he had just blitzed the Third Seat of Shunsui's Company:

(Ch. 107) Shunsui blitzes Chad Yasutora faster than Chad could realize what happened:

(Ch. 355) Shunsui dodges an attack from the Primera Espada Coyote Starrk and earns praise from him for not losing his hat or kimono during their exchange:

(Ch. 359) Shunsui dodges one of Espada No. 1 Coyote Starrk's Ceros even after being surprised that Starrk didn't get into any position to fire it:

(Ch. 362) Shunsui dodges a Cero from Coyote Starrk's gun after the Espada went into his Released state:

(Ch. 363) Shunsui dodges a point blank blast from Coyote Starrk's Cero gun:

(Ch. 497) Shunsui dodges a surprise attack from the Sternritter someone and is able to prevent further injury from a follow up attack, only getting hit in one of his eyes:

Shunpo

(Ch. 155) Shunpo, also known as Flash Step, is an ability where the user travels at FTE speeds over a short distance. The essence of the ability is to be able to travel a long way with just one step:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 106) Shunsui appears right behind Chad Yasutora after dodging his Arm Cannon attack:

(Ch. 155) Shunsui impresses General Captain Genryusai Yamamoto with his Shunpo as he moves his Assistant Captain Nanao Ise out of the way of their fight:

(Ch. 362) Shunsui uses his Shunpo to escape the insane amount of Ceros that was fired from Coyote Starrk's gun, easily at least a dozen at once and the technique was called a machine gun:

Durability/Endurance

(Ch. 24) A thing to note and be aware of is that according to Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper's life force is equal to his/her spiritual energy:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 156) Shunsui appears to be fine after charging head first into General Captain Genryusai Yamamoto's Shikai, which is the most deadly zanpaku-to in Soul Society. Yamamoto warned Shunsui and Ukitake that if they didn't use their Shikai against him they would be burned to ash without putting up a fight:

(Ch. 364) Shunsui survives being hit directly by Coyote Starrk's Cero gun and then survives the fall from high up to the ground below:

Context

(Ch. 365) In the next chapter, Shunsui is visited by Lisa Yadomaru and kicked in the face for "pretending to be dead" but we see him sit up just fine afterwards:

(Ch. 374) Shunsui is slashed across the back by the Primera Espada Coyote Starrk and barely registers the hit:

(Ch. 646/647) Shunsui has a piece of his side and shoulder blown off and shot through by the Sternritter Lille Barro's Ziliel form but is still able to run and leap away over the tops of buildings:

(Ch. 647) Shunsui then dodges two more attacks of Lille Barro's still with the same injuries and is even commended for it by the Sternritter:

(Ch. 647) Shunsui is able to cross a large distance across a large city after the wounds he sustained from Lille Barro:

No Caption Provided

(Ch. 649/650) Shunsui is shot through the chest by Lille Barro but is able to not only stay alive but stay conscious and keep talking to his zanpaku-to and later, after being woken up, Nanao:

(Ch. 650) Shunsui then manages to still dodge Lille Barro's attack to escape and hide behind a building:
