Gamora is a former assassin and a current member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. She became the adopted daughter of Thanos after he killed her entire race and served him for many years before betraying him in an attempt to free herself. On a mission to retrieve the Orb, an Infinity Stone, Gamora crossed paths with Peter Quill, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Drax the Destroyer and through a common interest of self-preservation, the group decided to join together to prevent Ronan the Accused from gaining the Orb and gaining unimaginable power. Through this ordeal, the group slowly became friends and officially joined together after defeating Ronan, becoming the Guardians of the Galaxy as Ronan had proclaimed them.

(Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude #01, 2014) Gamora has been training under Thanos for years and did so alongside her adopted sister, Nebula. The two of them trained for years to be Thanos' servant in what Nebula recalled as "grueling" and "punishing", and from the flashback we see Gamora and Nebula balancing on one leg on a thin rock spire, using swords in sparring matches and swinging and climbing up ropes over what appears to be creatures willing to eat them if they would fall:
(Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude #01, 2014) On one of their training missions, Gamora and Nebula were tasked with finding and retrieving a data ingot on an arboreal world of trees that reached all the way up to the sky. Gamora engages Nebula in knife combat, showing she has been trained to use a knife as well as a sword, and although she is knocked off-balance and is left hanging on a ledge, she tricks Nebula into helping her and pulls her off the ledge, forcing her to fall to the ground:
(Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude #01, 2017) Gamora implies that she's never failed a mission to Ronan:
(Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude #01, 2017) Gamora has been trained as a living weapon:
Thanos would repeatedly pit Gamora against Nebula in training when they were younger and Gamora would always win and every time Nebula lost, Thanoes would replace a flesh and bone piece of her with machinery. As you can see from the two of them, Gamora didn't lose:
