Respect Sonar, the Sultan of Super-Sonic Sound
Bito Wladin is Sonar, a man driven to a life of crime in an attempt to bring attention to his home country of Modoran. Sonar utilizes technologies based off of what he calls 'Nucleo Sonics' which grants him the ability to fly, generate destructive blasts of sound, and create barriers of pure sound. Throughout his career he primarily served as a foe to Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern; however, he has also fought against the Justice League, Justice League Europe, and the Elongated Man.
Here is his handbook entry.
Table of Contents
- Physical Attributes
- Sonic Technologies
1.0 Physical Attributes
While Sonar appears to be a normal human his physical stats are amplified by his battle suit. He is also capable of applying sonic energies to his punches, thus making them stronger and effective at a longer range.
Durability
- Justice League Europe #50 - Tanks a blow from Power Girl.
- Justice League Europe #50 - Is hit by an energy blast from Doctor Light and punched by Power Girl, remains active and in the fight.
- Justice League Europe #50 - Is sucker punched by Flash (Wally West) and recovers in time to tag him; could also double as a speed feat.
Senses
- Justice League Europe #48 - Can isolate specific voices due to his battle suit.
Speed
- Justice League of America #132 - Reacts to and destroys an arrow fired by Green Arrow.
Strength / Sonic Punches
- Elongated Man #1 - KO's Mollusk with a sonic punch.
- Green Lantern V2 #14 - KO's Hal Jordan with a sonic punch.
- Green Lantern V2 #19 - KO's the entire Granican army with a single sonic punch.
- Green Lantern V2 #188 - Sends John Stewart flying back with a sonic punch from 20 feet away.
2.0 Sonic Technologies
While Sonar doesn't possess any innate powers or abilities he is a skilled engineer and practitioner of 'Nucleo Sonics' and has designed several sound based weapons, his primary weapon being his tuning fork gun. Go ahead and laugh, Blue Beetle sure did.
Energy Projection
At one point he built a suit that allowed him to project sonic blasts from his hands. These are not related to the blasts from his tuning fork gun.
- Justice League Europe #50 - Defeats Power Girl & Hal Jordan with his Energy Blasts. Is also shown with the ability to mimic the voices of others, as he does so to distract Hal.
Flight
By harnessing nearby sounds he can propel himself through the air. His flight can keep pace with members of the Green Lantern Corps.
- Green Lantern V2 #19 - Explanation of how he has access to flight. His flight seems pretty basic and he can keep up with the likes of Hal Jordan.
- Justice League Europe #48 - Flies above Russia alongside two Rocket Reds.
Tuning Fork Gun
The Tuning Fork Gun is Sonar's primary means of attack. It has a variety of uses such as creating force fields, projecting illusions, and firing off devastating energy blasts of pure sound.
- Green Lantern V2 #14 - Projects an illusion into Hal Jordan's head that everything around him is now yellow.
- Green Lantern V2 #19 - Projects an illusion into Hal Jordan's head that makes him think he's in an ancient Roman Colosseum.
- Green Lantern V2 #25 - Manipulates several steel girders to encase Hal Jordan.
- Green Lantern V2 #25 - Uses sound waves to shatter a skyscraper into fragments; also generates a shock wave.
- Green Lantern V2 #25 - Fires a concentrated energy blast of EM waves to superheat Hal Jordan's lantern ring.
- Green Lantern V2 #25 - A ringless Hal Jordan uses it to break his fall.
- Green Lantern V2 #25 - Can be used to hold people in place, as Hal does to Sonar when their weapons were swapped.
- Green Lantern V2 #25 - Can increase someone's internal vibrations allowing them to phase through matter.
- Green Lantern V2 #25 - Serves as a sonar tracking device.
- Green Lantern V2 #105 - Sonic blast causes Hal Jordan immense pain.
- Green Lantern V2 #130 - KO's Hal Jordan with a sonic blast.
- Green Lantern V2 #188 - Sends several girders hurdling towards John Stewart; then immobilizes Jon Stewart with a sonic blast.
- Green Lantern V2 #189 - Shakes a large house with sonic waves.
- Green Lantern V2 #201 - Rips a hole in a fence with a sonic blast; then neutralizes alarms in a safe.
- Justice League America #43 - Removes a large vault door.
- Justice League America #43 - Uses multiple sonic blasts to stun Orion, Martian Manhunter, and Fire.
- Justice League America #43 - Blasts Martian Manhunter with another sonic blast to stun him; causes every window on the block to shatter.
- Justice League America #44 - Blows a large hole in the side of an apartment building.
- Justice League of America #132 - KO's several members of the Justice League including Hal Jordan, Wonder Woman, the Atom, the Elongated Man, Batman, Black Canary, and Green Arrow.
- Justice League of America #132 - Generates a protective field of sound around his body that allowed him to take a hit from Supergirl. Transforms his body into a beam of sound to teleport.
- Justice League of America #132 - Destroys one of Green Arrow's arrows and one of Hal's Green Lantern Constructs. His protective sound field prevents physical harm from being done to him and he manages to fight off Green Arrow, Batman, and Green Lantern. Causes a minor earthquake by firing his weapon at the ground.
Conclusion
Sonar is a cool, minor villain with a neat, versatile weapon. Odd to me that he was a Green Lantern Rogue, so much so that another Sonar (Sonar II) was created to fight against another Green Lantern, Kyle, only Sonar II had cybernetic implants as opposed to a tuning fork gun. A bit of a joke character (to the point where he even thought heroes laughed at him) but still fun to read about, doubtful that we'll ever see him again, but who knows.
As always, I hope you enjoyed the thread and stay tuned for more!
