Alita “The Angel of Death”

No Caption Provided

Introduction

Alita is the titular protagonist of the sci-fi manga Battle Angel Alita. Alita is a cyborg found in the scrapyard who’s forgotten her past, though she retains some clues such as her Panzer Kunst martial arts. Throughout the series she takes on many roles as a bounty hunter, motorball player and more on her road to self discovery and the unveiling of her past. Enough about that though, you’re here for her combat abilities not a synopsis and recommendation (though I do recommend the series). The version of Alita I’m using for this tourney is from her time as a TUNED agent (ch. 31-50 of the original manga). During this period, Alita acts in service of the Ground Investigation Bureau, undertaking missions on the surface for the benefit of the floating city of Tiphares.

Gear

As an agent of Tiphares, Alita receives a new body and a full arsenal of weaponry. Her capabilities with the TUNED body will be addressed in the physicals section so let’s look at the firepower she acquires from her gear. While working as one of the TUNED Alita also has a handler in Tiphares who can communicate with her during missions and provide data and other support such as satellite mapping. Since this is a tournament where Alita can’t receive outside help I’ll only focus on the gear which she can use without the help of Tiphares and I think will be beneficial in this encounter.

TUNED Pistol – This packs quite a bit of firepower able to pierce titanium coated armor and still splatter the head of the soldier behind it (ch. 33).

Bug Drones – Multiple types of explosives are also utilized by Alita as shown here [1,2] (ch. 33) There’s also the Firefly (ch. 47) which creates a small burst of plasma that can be used to create entrances or vaporize enemies.

Damascus Blade – Not received for her work as one of the TUNED but an essential piece of equipment nonetheless. Alita’s Damascus Blade is her signature weapon, durable enough to hold up against diamond edged sawblades (ch. 18) even before being forged into a single stronger blade (ch. 20). She now uses it as a polearm (ch. 33).

Physicals

Alita’s no slouch physically either. She’s strong enough to kick armored soldiers through walls (ch. 33) and kick steel doors off their hinges (ch. 47). Her durability is roughly equal able to take strikes from AR-2 (ch. 44) an android physically equal to her that uses her techniques. She also takes small arms gunfire without issue (ch. 33). However her most impressive aspect is speed.

I’ll be arguing her at the tourney limit of Mach 3 based primarily off her fight against Eelai (ch. 48). During this fight she dodges and attacks faster than Eelai’s water cutters. Now on panel we’re told this is supersonic but a little more digging on real world water jet cutter’s gives a more precise estimate of Mach 3. The following excerpt is directly from the wiki page on water jet cutters. “This beam of water is ejected from the nozzle, cutting through the material by spraying it with the jet of speed on the order of Mach 3, around 2,500 ft/s (760 m/s).” Of course, that’s not her only good speed feat. Her reactions are good enough to bullet time (ch. 33) from close range even while occupied with other opponents in close quarters and her striking speed in her civilian body (weaker than the version being used here) is still good enough to make over a dozen attacks (ch. 27) in a very short timespan.

Skill

Of course Alita’s physical prowess and deadly Damascus Blade are further augmented by her skill. Alita employs the Panzer Kunst a lost Martian martial art. The most notable of it’s techniques are the Hertza Haeon (ch. 14) which utilizes vibrations to deal massive internal damage and the Einzung Rustungen (ch. 22) where Alita matches the opponents tempo to create an opening. Additionally there’s chi which involves reading the opponent and focusing one’s strength to strike at their weakest point. This also grants Alita hyperawareness of her surroundings (ch. 49).

Muteba Gizenga “The Genocider”

No Caption Provided

Introduction

A merciless, blind mercenary of the Congo, Muteba is infamous for his fighting prowess in the Kenganverse. He was hired by Iwami Heavy Industries to represent them in the Kengan Annihilation Tournament, an underground martial arts tournament.

Physicals

Muteba is well beyond any normal human physically. While his fighting style isn’t reliant much on physical strength, he still displays superhuman feats such as this leap (ch. 69). His durability is even more impressive, he dives out of a helicopter (ch. 153.5) and shows no damage afterwards, tanks a barrage of blows from Sekibayashi Jun (ch. 142) who can send Ohma flying with enough force to total a car (ch. 14) and on top of that he takes hits from Wakatsuki Takeshi (ch. 193) who is one of the physically strongest characters in the series. If necessary, we can get into some scaling for Wakatsuki’s punches but for now this (ch. 191) should suffice. Of course, Muteba won’t just stand around taking hit’s he can move pretty quickly too.

For starters he shows himself capable of avoiding Wakatsuki’s strikes (ch. 191) through most of their match. This is impressive since Wakatsuki can blitz (ch. 63) other Kengan fighters and though heavily contextual due to how much damage both had accumulated previously, he also kept up with and pressured Ohma even blocking blows to his blind spot (ch. 219). Ohma has supersonic reaction feats such as slicing the tip off a whip (ch. 119). As an absolute baseline, Muteba is FTE to normal people but based on this scaling and his general standing within the verse I think low supersonic reaction speeds is a reasonable assessment.

Skill

On top of his physical abilities he has multiple techniques and skill statements. His most dangerous technique is the heart jab (ch. 146). This attacks the heart directly and can instantly kill either of my your characters so long as it lands. His other techniques are not really worth mentioning, so instead let’s shift gear to focus on his accolades. We’re told he defeated a heavily armed rebel force unarmed and alone without injury (ch. 69) and then he defeats over half a dozen pirates armed with automatic weapons, a minigun and an rpg (ch. 69) without difficulty. Additionally he learns new skills such as proper footwork (ch. 144) near instantaneously. Despite footwork being an unnecessary skill for a mercenary, he masters it in the course of a single fight. This ability to quickly adapt to new surroundings makes him rather terrifying.

Senses

As mentioned in the introduction, Muteba is blind. However in return his other senses have become superhuman (ch. 72). Most impressive is his hearing which allows him to follow the matches by listening to the motions of the fighters through a monitor and even hear fabric rubbing together from dozens of meters away in the middle of a cheering stadium. His sense of smell is so good, relying solely on it (ch. 147) he was able defeat Sekibayashi in the second round of the tournament. He also ends up receiving cybernetic eyes (ch. 194) later on which give even more sensory options such as thermal vision. These various senses will most certainly be beneficial in tracking both your team and the various guards on the map.

Hot Pants

No Caption Provided

Introduction

Hot Pants is a female participant of the Steel Ball Run race who occasionally helps the protagonists Johnny and Gyro. She is working for the Vatican trying to recover the corpse parts to atone for her past sins.

Cream Starter

Hot Pants’ ability Cream Starter (ch. 35) allows her to absorb flesh and change it into a creamlike spray. This unique ability has a wide array of applications including healing injuries (ch. 36), disguising people (ch. 49), allowing Hot Pants to stretch her body (ch. 50) and even detach her limbs (ch. 34) which can still operate independently.

Offensively it can be used to sever limbs (ch. 34) or suffocate opponents (ch. 73). Spraying Cream Starter on an opponents face is particularly dangerous in this match as it would blind and slowly suffocate one of your team, incapacitating them for a while without allowing them to respawn or be revived by the medic. The spray itself is quite fast able to hit Diego Brando (ch. 73) who is a bullet timer (ch. 68).

Strategy

With Muteba’s senses my team will be able to keep track of my opponents from the start of the battle and due to his background as a mercenary he’ll be left to devise the strategy as well. The biggest wildcard in the match is the medics, so eliminating your medic first or attempting to take Vino and Azrael out simultaneously is the obvious strategy. Given my perk gives knowledge of the battlefield and your team, devising a battleplan should not be too difficult.

The initial assault will be from range with Alita’s missile bees. The explosions should do serious damage to your team but assuming they survive the medic is probably out of commission after the initial attack. The next phase involves Alita engaging in close combat. Her speed and Damascus Blade pose a pretty serious threat to your team and they’ll likely be disoriented from the missile barrage. Again assuming that doesn’t kill them outright, she’ll drive them on the defensive and we move to phase three. Driven on the defensive, Alita can push your team into an ambush by Hot Pants. With the battlefield knowledge my team has Hot Pants can outflank the enemy and position herself stealthily in one of the many chokepoints around the map. At all points during the mission Muteba will guard my team’s medic so that if Alita is somehow killed, Muteba can buy enough time for the medic to revive her.

Without more knowledge of your team’s capabilities that’s about as detailed of a breakdown as I can give, but it should illustrate my team has multiple ways to achieve victory (ranged, close quarters, ambush) and benefits from knowing the environment better. Your turn!

@geekryan I'll take the Overwatch perk. Also question about the medics, can they also heal nonfatal injuries by touching a teammate for 3 seconds?

@delein OG manga only for Alita, specifically her body and equipment from her time as a TUNED agent. Also I don't mind going first, best of luck.

@geekryan Decided Lang's abilities require a bit too much setup. I'll switch him for Muteba Gizenga (2 points). Sorry for the constant team changes, this should be the last one
