This week's strip was a very challenging one.

Since both Squid-Girl and CM have stuff happening simultaneously I was hesitant to keep doing one strip showcasing a single character back and forth. It was important to begin conveying to you (the reader) that these separate events all take place at the same relative time. What's happening to CM in the cave with the ghoul is meatier, with important plot elements to the storyline (and the greater plot of the strip itself) but became a little too "talky" with not much action. Meanwhile, Squid-Girl's arc is all visual. I wanted to show two key elements a) that the smokey specters are emanating from the isle rocks and  that Squid-Girl's second set of bulbous eyes on the back of her head are fully functional. Did it work? Is that what comes across? Did I do my job as a storyteller or were these elements lost? I'd love to know your thoughts...

In the end I opted for some good ol' fashioned voice over to move things along with our new ghoulish friend here doing all the heavy lifting as I finally throw you all a bone and drop some meaty bits of plot in your supper dish.

Enjoy!

NEW Blue & Gold sketch

No Caption Provided
You all know I loves me some Blue & Gold! Recently, here on CV, I posted this entry  http://www.comicvine.com/myvine/thecheckeredman/blue-gold-sketch/87-76469/  to pester a writer pal of mine (and fellow Blue & Gold enthusiast) to work up some scripts so we could create some bootleg comics of these two funny funsters!

Well good news! He caved like a wimpy lil' baby (heh heh heh) and it looks like he's going to give the idea some further thought. Thanks guys! I copies your comments into an email to him, so you helped me shame the little weasel into caving! I'll keep you all posted...

Well, we're back to The Isle of Terror this week! Over the holiday my fiance' got me a Wacom tablet and this strip marks the first TOACM strip I colored/toned using the tablet.

I don't plan on changing my pencil and ink process anytime soon. I still like drawing and inking on paper. But I do like the looseness I get in the toning from using the tablet. I'm looking forward to learning more about this new tool.

Checkered Man sketch

This is a little sketch I did of the Checkered Man in the newly evolving style I use for all my sketchcard work. It's so weird to see him like this...but I kinda like it. Any thoughts?

Also, I just got a Wacom tablet yesterday, so I felt like giving it a whirl. I loosely dropped some color in for the heck of it (out of my standard TOACM three color pallette). It is definitely gonna take some getting used to, but I can see already how much this will change (i.e. speed up) the toning/coloring process.

Enjoy!

Boba Fett Sketch

No Caption Provided
During the holidays my nephew asked me if I could draw Boba Fett. I hadn't drawn him in ages so I accepted the challenge (but not without reference)! I dug the b&w sketch enough to want to add some color to it as well. I just dropped in the paper texture to give it a little added kick. Enjoy!

Materials: 4h lead, Mitsubishi brush pen, Prismacolor marker on  Strathmore 400 series sketch paper

New TALES OF A CHECKERED MAN "Tales of a Checkered Dolt!"

I had originally hoped to be back to The Isle of Terror this week, but alas it was not meant to be. Instead, I hope you find this lil comic enjoyable instead. I've had this in "the crank file" since early summer as a fun little one-shot strip so this seemed like the perfect time to dust it off, polish it up, and post it. This strip tips it hat to the amazing funny Looney Tunes cartoon "Duck Amuck" by the legendary Chuck Jones in which Daffy Duck is tormented by a seemingly sadistic, initially unseen animator (Bugs Bunny), who constantly changes Daffy's locations, clothing, voice, physical appearance and even shape. Great stuff!

"The Artist" sketch

I went downtown and saw "The Artist" last night in Ann Arbor. What a treat! I loved it! I couldn't help but doodle a sketch of George Valentin the first chance I got!

I'm not typically a movie snob or claim to be some sort of highbrow critic or film connoisseur. Most of the movies I enjoy have stuntman dressed in rubber monster suits or flying saucers held aloft by fishing line.

Regardless of the lack of aliens or super villains, "The Artist" had me from the first scene until the very end. Yeah, maybe it was a tad too long, but I forgive it. I felt about George's silent films what many may feel about printed comics and Peppy's "talkies" to digital downloads and iPads -- this coming from a guy who published his comic strip on the internet.

Enjoy!

Here's a few rough sketches I did over the holiday weekend for my nephew who loves to name a character and then have me draw it on the spot. It's a pretty fun (and challenging) exercise!

Drawn with a 4h lead, inked with a Mitsubishi brush pen. The color was added in Gimp.
