Kyle Katarn Respect Thread - Updated & Expanded

Respect Kyle Katarn, the Jedi Outcast

"The dark side? I've been there. Do your worst."

Welcome to the largest collection of Kyle Katarn's feats and accolades.

This Respect Thread serves as a major update for the already existing Kyle Katarn Respect Thread by @wollfmyth209. If during the reading you find a quote that seems familiar, it's likely that you've already seen it in Wolf's thread.

The following Respect Thread is a result of cooperation between myself and @fated_xtasy. He's been involved in the whole project just as much as I.

With all that out of the way, respect the Jedi Outcast.

Reputation and general accolades

Kyle graduated from the Imperial Academy as one of the top 10% of his class. His brief carrier in the Imperial Military earned him the respect of General Rom Mohc and the Imperial Medal of Valor:

The next part of the ceremony was extremely important to some of the cadets - those in the top ten percent of the class - and less so to everyone else. In spite of the fact that Kyle had worked hard to make the Commandant's honor roll, he felt ambivalent about being recognized for it.

[...]

Kyle heard his name boom over the public adress system, accepted the honor baton that Mohc handed him, and was surprised to hear his name for a second time.

"And, in recognition for his valor, and bravery in the face of the enemy, the Emperor hereby presents Second Lieutenant Kyle Katarn with the Medal of Valor, as well as the Empire's heartfelt gratitude."

Dark Forces

Kyle graduated with honors, including a Medal of Valor for his part in pacification of a Rebel base.

Power of the Jedi Sourcebook

After defecting from the Empire, Kyle became a top Rebel agent (entrusted with several vital and dangerous missions) and one of the key figures of the Galactic Civil War:

An elite Rebel agent entrusted with some of the most crucial missions of the Rebel Alliance. It was Katarn who singlehandedly infiltrated an Imperial installation on Danuta, securing the technical plans of the Empire's Death Star battle station.

The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia

He resolved to join the Rebellion. Katarn became a highly capable Rebel agent, vouched for by the respected Ors. He drew the attention of no less than Mon Mothma, leader of the Alliance, who entrusted Katarn with the fateful mission to Danuta. After the Battle of Yavin, Katarn was instrumental in quelling the threat of the Imperial Dark Trooper project.

The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia

Kyle's missions for the Alliance included the capture of part of the Death Star plans and the destruction of General Rom Mohc's deadly Dark Trooper project. Kyle also took part in a SpecForce mission put together by Rebel operative Corwin Shelvay, in which he teamed up with Force-sensitives Shira Brie and Erling Tredway to render inoperative the superlaser of the second Death Star en route to D'rinba IV.

Dark Forces Saga, Part 1

One of the Rebellion's most successful intelligence agents, Kyle Katarn also danced on the edges of Jedi greatness for years before fully joining Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order.

Wizards of the Coast: Kyle Katarn: Jedi Outcast

One of the key Rebel Agents of the Civil War was a former winner of the Imperial Medal of Valor, and Cadet Officer who destroyed an Alliance communications station.

The Official Star Wars Fact File #140

New Republic Chief of State Mon Mothma’s faith in the young agent paid off when he successfully stole the plans to the Empire’s new battle station, the Death Star. Kyle’s success led to more dangerous assignments.

Power of the Jedi Sourcebook

Dark Forces launches the career of Kyle Katarn, a top Rebel agent charged with stealing the original Death Star plans and delivering them to Princess Leia.

Insider #23

Kyle took down the Dark Trooper project almost single-handedly:

Few know the details of the infamous Dark Trooper project. The files were heavily encrypted. The imperial engineers were sworn to secrecy. And the Rebels who faced the machines in combat never lived long enough to pass on any information. All except one – Kyle Katarn, commando and Jedi Knight. Katarn’s briefings to Alliance Command, coupled with classified data sliced by Bothan spies, have revealed critical facts about the Empire’s ambitious attempt to create „super stormtroopers”. Though Katarn downplays his accomplishments, it appears he nearly single-handedly derailed the entire undertaking.

The Essential Guide to Droids

For his exploits against Rom Mohc's Dark Trooper project, Kyle has been rewarded by Mon Mothma with the Star of Alderaan, one of the highest military decorations awarded by the Rebel Alliance:

Both Jedi Master Qu Rahn and Luke Skywalker consider Kyle to be talented:

Luke Skywalker: "I think the second part of the message bears on the first. What did Katarn say? Something about a lightsaber that belonged to Rahn? The gift implies talent - talent and something more, connections that I sense but can't put into words. I believe we can trust Kyle.

Dark Forces: Rebel Agent (Novella)

Kyle is stated to have bested Inquisitor Jerec and his Dark Jedi followers by himself:

Several of the Emperor's Dark Side Adepts, led by the Dark Jedi Jerec, had attracted corporate backers to form a warlord cabal. Their influence was limited, but Jerec had discovered the Valley of the Jedi on Ruusan, where the spirits of the the Brotherhood of Darkness and Army of Light had been trapped in limbo for a thousand years. Jerec planned to use the Valley's power to topple Isard and rule a vast new empire. Katarn single-handedly defeated Jerec and his minions before the Dark Jedi grandiose plan could come to fruition.

The New Essential Chronology

On Danuta, he mowed down a base full of Stormtroopers. He went toe to toe with a phase three Dark Trooper and won, then defeated seven Dark Jedi, each one more powerful than the last.

The New Essential Guide to Characters

The fate of the galaxy was at stake during the duel between Kyle and Jerec:

Since the time of the Clone Wars, no Jedi battle loomed quite so large as this one. The fate of the galaxy sits like a rare Tumanian pressure-ruby in your hands. Jerec was already powerful enough to subjugate the other Dark Jedi to his designs; now he has tapped the power of a thousand Jedi ancients. Fortunately, you have interupted him in midusurpation.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II: The Official Strategy Guide

In the 2005 scenario for the Star Wars Miniatures Game, Kyle (at the time of his final duel with Jerec) is directly compared to the infamous Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress (while Jerec is compared to Count Dooku):

Light and Dark: Kyle Katarn's Tale, Mission 5: Endgame on Ruusan
Light and Dark: Kyle Katarn's Tale, Mission 5: Endgame on Ruusan

Note: Considering the date of the scenario's release, this refers to classic EU Ventress, not woefully inconsistent TCW Ventress.

Kyle’s exploits against Jerec and his Dark Jedi impressed Luke Skywalker:

Ever since his experience at Bakura, Skywalker had grown less interested in military conquest and more interested in the spiritual understanding of the Force. Skywalker's views were reinforced when he witnessed the heroic deeds of Kyle Katarn—a Force sensitive individual who, five years earlier, had helped recover the Death Star plans, and sabotaged the Empire's Dark Trooper program. Now Katarn was realizing his own potential as a Jedi.

Several of the Emperor's Dark Side Adepts, led by the Dark Jedi Jerec, had attracted corporate backers to form a warlord cabal. Their influence was limited, but Jerec had discovered the Valley of the Jedi on Ruusan, where the spirits of the Brotherhood of Darkness and Army of Light had been trapped in limbo for a thousand years. Jerec planned to use the Valley's power to tople Isard and rule a vast new Empire. Katarn single-handedly defeated Jerec and his minions before the Dark Jedi's grandiose plans could come to fruition.

Skywalker, impressed, offered to train Katarn as a Jedi apprentice, but the other man declined.

The New Essential Chronology

Kyle's renown as a Jedi caught the attention of Mara Jade, who approached him in the hope that he will be able to advance her training:

Kyle's reputation as a skilled Jedi has attracted Mara Jade - former assassin, smuggler and Dark Jedi-in-training under Emperor Palpatine. Earlier in Mara's career, Luke Skywalker convinced her to abandon the dark side. Hoping to complete her Jedi apprenticeship, Mara joins Kyle on the remote outpost of Altyr V.

Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith Manual

It has been more than five years since Jerec was defeated at the Valley of the Jedi. Kyle Katarn, continuing his pursuit of the light side of the Force, has joined the fragile New Republic in the struggle against the remnants of the Empire.

To aid in their cause, Kyle has traveled to a remote base in the Altyr system accompanied by Mara Jade, a young smuggler who sought out Kyle in the hope that he might further her Jedi training.

Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith

Kyle's exploits against Jerec and his Dark Jedi made him a "legendary hero":

Desann: "Kyle? Kyle Katarn? You are the legendary hero who destroyed Jerec at the Valley of the Jedi?"

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Kyle is considered one of the most famous graduates of Luke Skywalker's Jedi Praxeum:

Seven years after the Battle of Endor, Luke Skywalker was given the permission by the New Republic to found an academy on the fourth moon of Yavin. This academy, called the Praxeum, became home to many youung Force-sensitive citizens of the galaxy for the following decades. Among the more famous Jedi that served at the Praxeum were Han and Leia Organa Solo's children (Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin), Kyp Durron, Kyle Katarn, and Corran Horn.

While being praised by Luke Skywalker for his exploits against the Disciples of Ragnos, Jaden Korr admitted that his success wouldn't be possible without Kyle's teachings:

Luke Skywalker: "Jaden, you did more than we could have ever hoped. You’ve become a true Jedi."

Jaden Korr: "Thank you, Master Skywalker. But I couldn’t have done it without Kyle."

Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Kyle is a much more difficult opponent than the spirit of Marka Ragnos:

After killing Tavion, Kyle tries to stop you. Kyle is much more difficult than Marka Ragnos.

Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy: Prima's Official Strategy Guide

According to Jon Zuk, co-project lead of Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, the reason behind the change of protagonist from Kyle to Jaden Korr was that at the end of Jedi Outcast, Kyle was a very powerful Jedi and he wouldn’t have any difficulties completing missions planned for Jedi Academy:

As we fleshed the idea out, we discovered two problems. The first was that Kyle ended Jedi Outcast as a pretty powerful Jedi. If he were to take these missions, wouldn't he just breeze through everything as a Jedi superhero? The second problem was that stand-alone missions felt a little disjointed in terms of any kind of plot progression.

Fortunately, we had solutions to both. For the first, we decided you would play as a student, new to the Jedi Academy. In keeping with the idea of letting players customize their gameplay experience, we then also wanted to allow players to customize their own characters! You may already know this, but to reiterate, you can choose your species, appearance, and clothing style. Then, to keep building on the story of the Jedi Knight series, we made Kyle Katarn integral to the game by making him your teacher at the Jedi Academy!

Jon Zuk, Co-Project Lead, Raven Software

As a Jedi Battlemaster, Kyle Katarn is considered one of the most skilled military commanders the Jedi Order has to offer, and his services in this field are in high demand:

Jedi Battlemasters are also among the most talented battlefield commanders and leaders of the Jedi and are highly sought after by the Republic forces requesting aid from the Order.

Knights of the Old Republic Campaign Guide

Han Solo considered Kyle, along with Kenth Hamner and Keyan Farlander, as one of the most military-minded Jedi:

Han had always considered him [Kenth Hamner] the most military-mided of the Jedi - Keyan Farlander and Kyle Katarn nonwithstanding - and a year earlier Kenth had been named to Chief of State Cal Omas's Advisory Council, along with Jedi Masters Luke, Kyp Durron, Clighal, Tresina Lobi, and Jedi Knight Saba Sebatyne.

The New Jedi Order: The Unifying Force

Kyle is one of the most renowned members of the Order:

"What about these impulses?" Kyle Katarn asked. With brown hair, brown eyes, and a tan shirt tucked into brown breeches, he looked like a farmer about to return to his fields instead of one of the Jedi order's most famous and skilled members.

Dark Nest I: The Joiner King

As a Jedi, Kyle is considered as effective as squadrons of elite soldiers:

"They would have a very hard time smuggling in squadrons of elite soldiers to damage or disable the facility. One or two infiltrators they could manage. And packing squadrons' worth of effectiveness into one or two people..."

"Means Jedi."

"Yes."

Legacy of the Force: Betrayal

Kyle has been chosen by Luke Skywalker over two other notable Jedi Masters, Corran Horn and Kyp Durron, to lead a strike team against Darth Caedus, which would suggest that Luke saw Kyle as their superior in terms of combat abilities. What makes it even more impressive is that in the same conversation Luke outright admitted to himself the possibility of losing to Caedus:

"Why is there some doubt as to who is going to lead it?"

Kyp hesitated a moment. "Masters Horn and Katarn have volunteered. I am also willing to lead it. But I haven't assigned a mission leader yet... because I think you should lead it."

"Absolutely not."

"Please hear me out. There's worry in the Order. It comes from not knowing where we're going. The Jedi need you to show them. They need you to lead. A mission like this shows them your goals, your heart."

If I lead this mission, I will strike at Jacen with hatred. One of us will die, and Ben will follow our mutual example and be lost to the dark side. Luke did not need the Force to show him the future to know that this was true.

He thought about it a long moment. "Here's my decision. Master Katarn will lead this mission."

Legacy of the Force: Fury

Darth Caedus considers Kyle a threat. Consequently, Caedus holds Kyle in higher esteem than the likes of Mara Jade Skywalker, Leia Organa Solo, and Saba Sebatyne:

Three Jedi Knights: the younger Horn, the Falleen Mithric, the Bothan Hu'lya. He resisted the urge to snort. Separately or collectively, these Jedi Knights were no match for him.

Katarn, though, was a threat.

Legacy of the Force: Fury

Meanwhile, Mara was challenging him, pinpointing herself in the tunnels that ran deep under the Kavan countryside, thinking she was still an A-list assassin and that she could take someone who had complete mastery of the Force.

She was a superb assassin, but her Force skills were crude compared to his.

Legacy of the Force: Sacrifice

Jacen could defeat his mother or Ben without trouble; Saba, with difficulties.

Legacy of the Force: Fury

Note: Near the end of the Yuuzhan Vong War, Kyp Durron (the same Kyp who two years earlier performed his infamous dovin basal feat) claimed that Leia is his equal in terms of strength in the Force. Meanwhile, Mara Jade was considered Luke's most powerful ally at the early stage of the war, which would suggest her superiority over Kyp and Leia:

Yammosks could detect the Force, and Kyp maintained that Leia was as strong in the Force as he was.

The New Jedi Order: The Unifying Force

Luke Skywalker is the master of the Jedi academy on Yavin IV; Mara Jade Skywalker is not only his wife, but his most powerful supporter and ally.

Darth Wyyrlock considers Jaden Korr to be dangerous due to his training under Kyle:

Crosscurrent

According to Luke Skywalker, Kyle, while officially a Jedi Guardian, would've made an outstanding Jedi Sentinel, due to his diverse skillset. Jedi Sentinels tend to tackle the missions that both the Guardians and the Consulars either don't want, or deemed as impossible:

Strength

Jan Ors makes note of Kyle's fitness and strength:

He looked tall and fit as he talked to the local customs agent, shook hands, and checked the Crow's landing skids. What did she like about him anyway? Besides the fact that he'd saved her life? Was it the determinated look in his eyes? The strength in his hands? Or the laugh that came so seldom she found herself working for it?

Dark Forces: Soldier for the Empire

Kyle knocks out several Kell dragons with his bare hands:

"Jabba the Hutt, the Fat One, the Slimy One, returns. This is not good. He’s taken my gear; all my weapons, the nava card – and Jan. I’ve got to find her after I battle some Kell dragons. I’m normally an optimistic guy, but how do you fight a Kell dragon with your bare hands?"

(...)

Into the pit you go, and this pit is really the pits. Kell dragons are formidable obstacles even with a fusion cutter in your hands – and all you have at the start of this mission are your bare hands. In short, you have to punch the lights out of five or six Kell dragons before you can get out of here. It’s no simple feat, especially when you have to box more than one at a time.

Dark Forces: Official Player's Guide

Kyle defeating Rom Mohc in hand-to-hand combat indicates his capability to damage Phase III Dark Trooper exosuit with his raw strength. An insane physical feat considering that this was pre-Jedi Kyle, and that Phase II Dark Trooper was durable enough to withstand a direct shoot from an Aratech 74-Z speeder bike, being rammed to the ground by the mentioned bike, being buried under a massive boulder, and a powerful explosion before finally succumbing to the damage:

Mohc at last met his match when the Imperial traitor Kyle Katarn, whom Mohc had last seen receiving the prized Medal of Valor, confronted him on the Arc Hammer. Despite donning one of the only Phase Three Dark Trooper exosuits produced aboard the massive craft, Mohc was defeated by the Rebel in hand-to-hand combat. The general was atomized along with the rest of the Dark Trooper project when Kyle destroyed the mobile production facility.

Speed/reflexes

Despite a lack of formal training in the Force, Kyle instinctively uses the Force to boost his reflexes:

Kyle turned, spotted four troopers on the walkway above, and flinched as a bolt singed his shoulder. Logic dictated that this was it, the end of his life, since no one could shoot that straight or fast... Unless - the thought acted like a trigger. Time slowed and his senses grew more acute. The Force was like a river that carried all before it. Those who live in harmony with its currentss were strenghtened - while those who stood in opposition were tossed like chips in a flood.

Kyle stood within an eddy, chose his target, and fired. Not a long burst, but a single, perfectly aimed shot. The bolt found its mark, as did the rest.

Dark Forces: Soldier for the Empire

The doors started to close and buzzed when Kyle used his blaster to keep them apart. They sensed the resistance, opened, and allowed him to pass. The attack came without warning as a blaster bolt drilled a hole through Kyle's shoulder. He staggered and tried to respond but felt very, very tired. The blaster seemed so heavy that he could barely lift it. The bounty hunters were little more than a blur. He backpedaled, felt his shoulder hit the door, and waited for the shot that would end his life.

A voice sounded inside his head. "Go to the place within. Nothing can touch you there. The Force will protect you."

Kyle had heard of the Force and instinctively knew that what he thought of as "the gun trick" relied on an energy source external to himself. That knowledge, plus extreme desperation, caused him to listen.

Kyle called on the Force, became one with it, and felt events start to slow. There was time now, plenty of time in which to assess the bounty hunters arrayed before him, raise his weapon, and open fire.

The Rebel felt removed somehow, like a witness to someone's life. He watched as a Rodian toppled, a Gamorrean fell, and a human collapsed.

Kyle survives a blaster bolt to the shoulder and close proximity of a grenade explosion:

The Rebel felt removed somehow, like a witness to someone's life. He watched as a Rodian toppled, a Gamorrean fell, and a human collapsed.

A feeling of smug invincibility settled over Kyle as his enemies fell like wheat before a scythe. No one could stand before him! No one was as smart, as powerful, as...

Suddenly, and without warning, the slow, almost dreamy battle snapped into fast forward. An energy beam sizzled past Kyle's head - and he undestood his mistake. The Force was the source oh his protection, not... A grenade exploded, the deck disappeared, and his head struck metal.

Dark Forces: Rebel Agent (Novella)

Kyle tanks Yun's telekinetic blast to the chest:

Kyle adjusted his aim and felt a sledgehammer hit his chest. Not a real sledgehammer but the one shaped from the Force, and just as effective. He backpedaled and slammed into a chair. The blaster tumbled away, and Yun shook his head.

"So, this is what the light side sends against us. No wonder we succeed." So saying, lightsaber buzzing in his hand, he strode the length of the table. Broken tile skittered away from his boots.

Kyle recognized the Jedi as one of the three he'd seen at the farm... the young one.

The Rebel raised his feet, kicked the table, and did a backward somersault. The chair crashed to floor, and the agent landed on his knees.

Dark Forces: Rebel Agent (Novella)

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Novella)

Kyle tanks a Force attack from an amplified Jerec that disintegrated a ramp and knocked down a ship:

The Dark Jedi drew upon the energy that leaked out of the Valley, gave it shape, and hurled the construct at Kyle's chest. The blast threw the Rebel backward onto the loading ramp. He staggered and had just managed to reestablish his footing when a second, more powerful explosion hurled him back into the cargo ship. The lock sensed his presence, and the hatch started to close. The ramp disintegrated.

The ship tilted away, and fell toward the rocks below.

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Novella)

Kyle takes a Force attack from a massively amplified Jerec and recovers quickly:

Jerec turned, extended his hand, and triggered an explosion. Kyle was propelled up and out of the chamber and onto the Valley floor. The impact knocked the air from his lungs. He was lying there, trying to breathe, when an icy wind swepth trhough the Valley.

It circled slowly at first, as if gathering energy, before steadily picking up speed. Dust and other bits of debriswere vacuumed up and whirled about. Voices wailed as mist billowed and the temperature continued to drop.

Kyle made it to one knee as Jerec levitated up and out of the mound. Voices moaned as lurge chunks of the inner mound and paving stones followed him up.

Kyle stood, heart pounding, staring upward. What could he do? Jerec had claimed the Valley's power, had already harnessed it, and would soon rule what remained of the Empire.

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Novella)

Kyle survives a fall from a sizeable height:

(4:57-5:42)

In quick succession, Kyle tanks Force Lightning and gets telekinetically slammed against a pillar by Tavion Axmis, however, he recovers quickly (while Jaden Korr remains on his knees):

(51:25-52:03)

Kyle survives a direct energy blast from the Scepter of Ragnos, and is buried under large amount of rubble:

(28:25-28:50)

Note: This feat comes from the Dark Side Ending of Jedi Academy, which is considered non-canon. It was added mainly for the sake of completionism.

Kyle tanks a GAG speeder being slammed into his back:

Caedus reached out a hand as if intending to hurl Katarn away from him. The Master raised his own hand, a deflecting gesture. But Caedus exerted himself against the oncoming GAG speeder, yanking it down and toward all of them.

A moment's inattention or focus elsewhere. That's all it ever took. By the time Katarn felt the speeder coming toward him - spinning, its stern a mere two meters from his back - it was already too late for him to send a command even to Force-augmented nerves and muscles. His face changed with the awareness of danger.

Then the speeder's port quarter hit his back, hurling him forward to slam into Caedus.

Legacy of the Force: Fury

Kyle Katarn survives being stabbed in the chest by a lightsaber:

Caedus felt a rush of satisfaction, enjoyment, as Katarn's expression turned from one of surprise to pain. Katarn looked down to see Caedus's lightsaber buried to its hilt in his chest.

A noise, something halfway between a groan and a death rattle, emerged from Katarn's lips. Smiling, Caedus yanked his lightsaber free and let the stricken Jedi Master fall face-first on the pavement.

There is no chin under Kyle Katarn's beard. Only another fist.

The Force is strong in the Katarn family:

The Force was strong in the Katarn family, something else that Morgan Katarn had kept from Kyle.

The Official Star Wars Fact File #124

Kyle is strong in the Force:

When Jedi Master Luke Skywalker began his study into how to train the new generation of Jedi Knights, the histories of two men, both very strong in the Force, did much to confuse issues. One of those men was Corran Horn, a fromer Correlian Security operative and Rogue Squadron pilot. The other was Kyle Katarn.

Kyle has a "powerful Jedi destiny":

Morgan had the burgeoning power of the Force, but more importantly Katarn's son, Kyle, had a powerful Jedi destiny that would be revealed in time.

This revelation led Kyle on a journey ot the hidden Valey of the Jedi, where he learned of his powerful Jedi destiny.

Correctly suspecting that he will become strong in the Force, Inquisitor Jerec intended to recruit Kyle, wanting to have powerful followers during his future confrontation with Darth Sidious:

When the Dark Jedi had discovered Morgan Katarn had a son, he took a personal interest. Jerec was ambitious, seeking to surround himself with powerful followers, meaning at some stage to challenge Palpatine. The son of Morgan Katarn was likely to be a powerful Jedi, and Jerec promised Kyle that he would be there when the young man was ready to join those with real power.

The Official Star Wars Fact File #124

Darth Vader considers Kyle to be strong in the Force, years before he received any actual training:

Darth Vader: "This is an unfortunate setback. The Force is strong with Katarn."

Dark Forces

Boc and Gorc consider Kyle to be strong in the Force:

Someone is watching us. I can feel it.

So?” Sarris responded impatiently. „What did you expect? This is more activity than the locals have seen for a long time. We’re hard to miss.

The Force is strong in this one,” Boc continued, „and he seeks to destroy us.

While pursuing Jerec and his minions, Kyle's skills and connection to the Force are constantly growing. His progress makes Qu Rahn proud:

As Kyle becomes stronger in the Force he must actually choose the light or dark path.

It's entirely possible to play Jedi Knight and win without using Force Powers. But both combat (especially with Dark Jedi) and exploration become far easier, not to mention more interesting, when you employ the remarkable abilities conferred upon Kyle Katarn by his ever-growing unity with the Force.

Dark Forces: Rebel Agent (Audiodrama)

The trick was to direct his mind toward understanding the individual subpatterns that contributed to the whole but to so without conscious thought, beceuse conscious thought took time and led to doubt. That being the case, Luke "sensed" where to direct his ship, fired when instinct told him to do so, and wove his way through a maze of outgoing laser fire. The Moldy Crow, still in one piece and still on Luke's tail, followed behind.

Jan, her hands dancing between controls, spoke from the side of her mouth. "Did you see that? It's as he knows which way to go."

Kyle, who had made a good deal of progress where his own talents were concerned, nodded admiringly. "That's because he does know which way to go. Stay on his tail."

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Novella)

By drawing from a single shaft of energy from the Valley of the Jedi, Jerec achieves the state of Oneness with the Force. Still, the realization of Kyle's rapid growth makes him feel fear:

Now that the Valley was under his control, Jerec was in no particular hurry. He needed time to prepare, but more than that, time in which to savor that which destiny had placed before him, much as a gourmet might linger over a rare and carefully prepared dessert. There was leakage, though - leakage that could double or even triple his ability - and whet his appetite for more.

The Jedi Master directed a thought outward, steered a circle around the cauldron of churning energy, and located a place where a steady stream of pitch-black energy had broken through the protective shell and strobed into space. Jerec chose a single shaft of negative energy, drew on its power, and felt himself expand. Bigger and bigger until his mind was everywhere, until he was one with the dark inner fabric of the Force itself, until he stood on the very brink of what he perceived as being all-powerful.

Not the state of enlightenment that so many prattled on about, but a state in which power could be accessed, shaped, and applied - all without the years of tedious meditation, study, and apprenticeship that proponents of the light side considered so necessary.

Even better was the next step, the step beyond Jedi Mastery, into which Jerec now passed. And it was there, in a state approaching all-knowingness, that he swept the ethers for signs of life.

Thousands appeared, each instantly identifiable, each distinct from all the rest. He felt the lieutenant, only meters away, frightened and eager to leave; his bodyguards, their minds blank with boredom; Sariss, seething with plans; Boc, relishing someone else's discomfort; Yun, confused and unsure; Maw, looking to express his rage; animals, following the dictates of their genetic programming; and there, closer than he would have thought, the intruders.

And not just any intruders - but Kyle Katarn! But wait - the boy had changed, had grown into more than an annoyance: a Jedi Knight! Not entirely unexpected, since Jerec had been aware of the boy's potential before he had, but surprising nonetheless. A self-taught Jedi was nearly unheard of - unless!

- and the truth flooded his mind.

The youth had a mentor: Rahn! Laughter came as if from a long way off - and Jerec felt a sudden stab of fear.He felt a desire to reach out, to crush that which opposed him, but brought the impulse under control. It was an interesting development, but not an immediate threat.

"Besides," Jerec mused, directing the thought outward, "even the best blade can be turned against those who forged it."

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Novella)

Upon finding his father's multi-tool, Kyle's resolve becomes stronger, resulting in him becoming so strong in the Force that his body was barely able to contain the power:

What had his father felt? Having come all that way? And lacking the ability to go further? Had he been frustrated? Fearful? There was no way to know, but one thing was for sure: The knowledge that Morgan Katarn had been there, and would expect him to presevere, strengthened Kyle's resolve.

The multi-tool made a comfortable weight in Kyle's pocket as he moved forward. His senses were hightened - and a thousand impressions flooded his mind. He had originally viewed the Force in the abstract, as something outside of himself, but not any longer. Now Kyle felt at one with the Force. It surged and seethed as if only barely contained. It trickled through the pores in his skin, filled each living cell, and displaced pain and fatigue. He felt, light, strong, powerful.

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Novella)

Kyle's exploits against Jerec and his minions turned him into a powerful Force-wielder, with his power continuing to grow:

At the end of Jedi Knight, the player (as Kyle) is either a consummately powerful warrior, having vanquished the evil Dark Jedi Jerec in face-to-face combat... or a figure of almost Palpatine-like power, as a Dark Jedi in charge of the Imperial Remnant.

Building a Mystery: The story behind the story of Mysteries of the Sith

After Kyle defeated the Imperial threat, he decided to go off and investigate some ruins on Dromund Kaas. I always imagined that Kyle had discovered these ruins long, long ago, during an ill-fated pirate raid. But at the time, not being a Force user, he didn't know what to make of them.

As he grew in knowledge and power, he realized they were Sith ruins. But some part of him was drawn to their dark call. So, without telling Mara why, he went off to investigate.

Kyle and Mara: Making Mysteries of the Sith

Kyle was part of the Jedi Academy inaugural class. Members of the class were noted for mastering radiating power, according to Exar Kun, becoming more powerful with each day, according to Luke Skywalker, and mastering the Force, similar to Luke in the past:

He [Luke Skywalker] located other candidates, including the clone Dorsk 81, the warrior woman Kirana Ti from Dathomir, and Corran Horn from Rogue Squadron. New Republic Commander Kyle Katarn also joined the first batch of students...

The New Essential Chronology

The early days of the academy were filled with conflict and turmoil, but these Jedi students continued their studies, mastering the Force as Luke had so many years earlier.

Galaxy Magazine #13

A few scant years later, Kun is brought sharply awake by the arrival of not one or two, but a dozen human beings blazing with the power he needed to live again.

Jedi Academy Sourcebook

Luke gathered his Jedi Knights around him, sensed their growing power intertwined. They were a team, not just wild cards with powers and abilities they did not understand.

[...]

There was no telling how long it would take for him to recover, but with each passing day the apprentices grew in strength as well.

Jedi Academy III: Champions of the Force

After using the Valley of the Jedi nexus to re-establish his connection to the Force, Kyle travels to Yavin IV to re-obtain his lightsaber. He goes through a series of trials prepared by Luke Skywalker. Luke is impressed by Kyle's performance and comes to the conclusion that he had to use the power of the Valley. Kyle confirmes and compares a brief bask in the Valley's nexus to "years of re-training", while Luke expresses concern on what would Kyle be capable of should he fall to the dark side:

Note: Luke's concern has been proven correct in the Dark Side Ending (non-canon) of Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, in which Kyle seizes the power of the Valley for himself and establishes himself as the new Emperor, crushing all opposition.

Desann acknowledges Kyle's power:

Desann: "I was wrong about you, Katarn. Your failure as a Jedi hasn't weakened you; it's only made you stronger."

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

The events of the Yuuzhan Vong War pushed the surviving Jedi, including Kyle, to become far more powerful than they could hope to be:

How were the Jedi changed by the war? At the end of the New Jedi Order, Luke Skywalker voiced his dream of seeing the Jedi renounce mundane concerns to pursue a longer view of the Force. That's a great ending for a series, but it makes for a pretty dull space opera. So I knew the Jedi would be dragged back into the mundane, forced by the necessities of the moment to devote themselves to preserving the Galactic Alliance.

And it seemed very clear to me that they would be effective. The Jedi's battles against Yuuzhan Vong had instilled in them an iron will to win, and the new view on the Force taught by Vergere -- the mysterious Knight from the Old Republic -- had made them more powerful than they ever dreamed possible.

Troy Denning Builds a Dark Nest

As a Jedi Master, Kyle reached the pinnacle of the Jedi craft and has a deep understanding of the Force:

Jedi Masters have reached the top of their craft within the Jedi Order. Achieving the title of Jedi Master requires patience, perseverance, and above all, faith in oneself. A deep understanding of the Force is a must, for a Jedi Master is able to unlock powerful secrets that few Jedi even dream of comprehending. It is not a journey that is quickly made, and few Jedi survive long enough to complete it. Those who do are widely respected, and justly so.

Threats of the Galaxy

According to Jacen Solo, someone at a Jedi Master level (which would include Kyle) would be "a fair match" for Grand Master Luke Skywalker. Zekk shares the same sentiment:

Jacen seized a rock outcropping and held it, keeping him from dropping once more toward the man with the face of Luke Skywalker. "You're just about as good as my true Master," Jacen said. And it was true—the phantom he fought had the speed and moves of a Jedi Master. He'd be a fair match for Luke.

Legacy of the Force: Betrayal

Zekk returned to stand over the two of them. "I don't think the three of us are a match for Lumiya. She fought the Grand Master to a standstill. She's Master level. We're two Jedi Knights and one Force-blind space jockey".

Legacy of the Force: Exile

Note: For more information about Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus, be sure to check out his Respect Thread by @thevivas.

Jaina Solo considers herself Force-wise inferior to Jedi Masters, which would include Kyle:

"I know that you Masters - and several Jedi Knights - are more skilled in both Force and lightsaber than I am."

Legacy of the Force: Invincible

Note: For more information about Jaina Solo, be sure to check out her Respect Thread by @shootingnova

Members of the Jedi Council, including Kyle, are the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy:

Han could only imagine how the current debate must be playing on him [Corran Horn], sitting in a room with a dozen of the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy, listening to them arguing not about how they were going to get his two sick kids out of carbonite, but about wheter they should turn two more young Jedi Knights over to the same people who had frozen Valin and Jysella.

Fate of the Jedi: Abyss

Kyle mastered the Force:

While Skywalker mastered the Force through empathy and feeling, Katarn did so through discipline and will.

Jedi Academy Training Manual credits Kyle with a higher number of Force Points than the likes of Clighal, Corran Horn, and Mara Jade Skywalker, as well as equal to that of Kueller:

Jedi Academy Training Manual
Jedi Academy Training Manual

Force Points represent a character's knack for using the Force to aid her actions. A character need not be Force-sensitive to use Force Points; they represent the prescence of the Force in all forms of life, and though some call it luck, others beleive that it is the will of the Force that grants a person aid. For a Force-sensitive character, it represents a conscious decision to call upon the Force for assistance.

Note: While these feats can only be seen in a non-canon, Dark Side Ending of Jedi Academy, Kyle's significant superiority over Jaden has been already confirmed by Jon Zuk (see the quote in the "Reputation..." section), therefore it should still be considered as valid. Furthermore, Korriban in itself is a potent dark side nexus (with the tombs of the Sith Lords being even more potent), making Jaden more powerful than normal, and consequently, making Kyle's feats even more impressive.

Kyle sends a large group of people and a Yuuzhan Vong back with telekinesis:

Equals & Opposites
Equals & Opposites

Kyle, with the aid of several other Jedi, builds a shell out of rocks and rubble around Luke, Mara, and Jacen:

Kyle Katarn arrived in the same instant, emerging from the flotsam with half a dozen other Jedi. They quickly drove the last of the Gorog warriors away, lacing the darkness with blaster bolts and flinging thermal detonators around like confetti, using the Force to create a protective shell of rubble around the Skywalkers and Jacen.

Dark Nest III: The Swarm War

Kyle performs a lightsaber throw:

Katarn hurled his lightsaber off to the side and caught Hu'lya with both hands, preventing her from falling, prepared to pull her out of harm's way if Caedus followed through.

Caedus did not. He kept his senses on Katarn's lightsaber, and, when it vectored to fly toward him from the side, he negligently swatted it away with his own blade.

[...]

Katarn caught his returning lightsaber.

Legacy of the Force: Fury

Runner, a clone of Kyle, uses the Force to send a speeder flying onto the walls of a building which half collapses due to the sheer force of the blow, and manages to devastate a hospital with a Force wave:

Soldier felt Runner's anger spike.

"Don't," he said, and reached back to grab Runner's arm, but it was too late.

Runner made a sweeping gesture with one hand, and the Weequay's speeder looked as if it had been hit broadside with an enormous wave. It teetered on its side and slid across the street, onto the sidewalk, crushing several pedestrians, and into an adjacent building. Metal shrieked and bent. Glass shattered. The building half-collapsed with an angry rumble. One of the Weequay's speeder's engines sputtered and burst into flames. Black smoke poured into the air.

[...]

Enough of this,” Runner said. He shoved Soldier to the side, the anger bleeding from him. He held out his hands and unleashed a blast of energy that went before him in a wide arc. The triage area virtually exploded. Beds overturned; overhead lights shattered, raining glass; medical equipment toppled; and two dozen bodies—patients, security guards, doctors, and nurses, including those whose minds Soldier had bent to his will—flew across the room and slammed into the far wall. Bones shattered.

Before them, the pile of bodies, bedding, and machinery looked like the aftermath of a bomb blast. The lift doors were crumpled on their mounts; the lift control panel was shattered and spitting sparks. The alarms from medical equipment beeped plaintively. Moans and screams sounded from the wounded.

Riptide

Note: Since Katarn is Runner's genetic template, it's safe to assume that Kyle can do similar telekinetic feats.

Despite not having much formal training in the Force, Kyle resists Sariss' mental assault before countering with his own:

Kyle swallowed, knowing his opponent was more experienced than he, and then suddenly reeled under the impact of a mental attack. This battle would be fought on two planes. One mental, the other physical - just like the ones in his "dream."

The Jedi accessed the knowledge gained from the long-dead Tal, blocked the mental strike and answered with an attack of his own. He launched a head cut from the third position, flexed his wrist, and extended his arm. Though a good deal lighter than its metal counterpart, the Jedi energy weapon possessed similar characteristics. It could penetrate like a rapier and cut like a saber. A double-edged saber.

Sariss blocked the mental blow, wondered where Katarn had garnered such knowledge, and found herself under attack.

Note: According to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Battle-Meld can only be used by a Jedi Master of great power and ability:

"It permits a group of Jedi to connect their minds so closely as to act as a single person." C'baoth told him.

"It can also be very dangerous," Obi-Wan warned. "It takes a Jedi Master of great power and depth in the force to create such a state without killing or destroying the minds of everyone involved."

The Outbound Flight

Force Sense/Precognition/Farsight

During his first assignment as a team leader, Kyle, despite lacking formal training in the Force, experiences glimpses of the future, which allows him to save the lives of many of his soldiers:

Suddenly, without knowing how he knew, Kyle glimpsed the future. Where the well-lit corridor had been he saw only darkness and the flash of energy weapons. The words tumbled out of his mouth. "Hit the dirt! Low-crawl forward!"

The orders made no apparent sense, but if the Imperial stormtropers knew anything, it was how to obey orders, and they did so to a man. Kyle's vision, and the resulting order, saved many of their lives.

Dark Forces: Soldier for the Empire

Kyle "sees" where a stormtrooper is going to appear:

Kyle ducked into the heretofore protected area, "felt" the trooper before he actually saw him, and aimed for the spot where the Imperial would appear. The soldier obliged, staggered as if drunk, and fell facedown on the floor.

Dark Forces: Soldier for the Empire

Kyle senses that he's being followed:

Kyle walked the length of the street as quickly as he could without drawing undue attention to himself. It wasn't until he had left the main drag and entered the realtive darkness of a residential area that the Rebel knew he'd been followed. He felt the other person's presence before he actually saw her with his eyes. The Force rippled away from the tail in the same manner that oil separates itself from water.

Dark Forces: Rebel Agent (Novella)

Kyle "sees" where the TIE fighter is going to move:

Kyle watched heavily eroded cliffs flash by, hoped Jan knew what she was doing, and forced himself to let it go. The Rebel felt a tremendous sense of calm as everything seemed to slow. Now he had time to think - to concentrate. He fired, rode the burts of energy outward, and flew wide of the terget.

The agent corrected his aim, "saw" where the TIE fighter would go next, and triggered the next shot. He rode this one all the way to the transparisteel canopy that protected the Imperial pilot and felt himself dissipate against it. Though not strong enough to punch its way through, the energy bolt did manage to blister the outer surface of the windshield.

The Jedi closed his eyes, resisted the temptation to look at the light that strobed against his eyelids, and sent a series of commands. He gathered the Force around him, shaped it into a protective cocoon, and sealed Jerec within.

Jerec felt a sense of warmth and peace as the cocoon of light formed around him. It was a wonderful sensation - and one he enjoyed, until something went wrong. The Jedi fell, struggled to stay aloft, and fell again. Something, or someone, had cut his access to the dark side of the Force...

Kyle Katarn: "The Imperials think I'm somehow immortal, but I just have a good supply of power cells."

The New Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology

His skill in unarmed combat was sufficient enough to be appointed as an unarmed combat instructor:

While continuing his training he also served as unarmed combat instructor.

Power of the Jedi Sourcebook

Even before becoming a Jedi, Kyle was a highly capable fighter:

Katarn was a one-man wrecking crew, sometimes lugging five or six weapons at once.

The New Essential Guide to Characters

For his first mission for Rebel Alliance, Kyle is sent to the planet Danuta to infiltrate an Imperial research facility and steal the plans of the Death Star, a mission that he considers suicidal for himself and more suited for an entire commando unit. During the mission, Katarn fights his way through a base filled with stormtroopers:

"The research complex where the Death Star was designed is located on Danuta. We want you to go there, find your way into the facility and retrieve those plans. Assuming the engineers identify a weak spot, the Death Star could be destroyed."

Kyle felt his heart sink. Fighting to avenge his father was one thing, throwing his life away was another. "What you describe is little more than a suicide mission. Why not launch a commando raid instead?"

Dark Forces: Soldier for the Empire

On Danuta, he mowed down a base full of stormtroopers.

The New Essential Guide to Characters.

After the Battle of Yavin, Kyle is sent on another "impossible" mission, this time to put an end to General Rom Mohc's Dark Trooper project. Dark troopers were highly advanced battle droids labeled as "super stormtroopers", which became an even greater concern to the Alliance than the Death Star. Their destructive capabilities impressed both Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. Even a single Phase One dark trooper was considered too much for most mortals:

It is a period of civil war. The Rebel Alliance struggles to free the galaxy from the clutches of the evil Galactic Empire. Discovering that Imperial forces have begun developing a new type of stormtrooper, the Rebels call on mercenary Kyle Katarn. His mission: seek out and destroy the secret Imperial project called Dark Trooper. A rogue mercenary loyal to no one, Kyle Katarn has accepted a near-impossible mission to destroy the Empire's ability to develop an army of unstoppable stormtroopers known as Dark Troopers.

The Power of the Jedi Pack

Kyle delivers the plans to the Rebel Alliance. Soon afterwards, the Death Star is destroyed... But even as the Alliance celebrates this victory, another sinister plot is set in motion, that will become even greater concern for the Rebelion...

Dark Forces

The first prototypes were tested in combat. They destroyed a Rebel base on Talay in what could only be called a brutal massacre. The Emperor and Darth Vader were impressed by the results and ordered the project to continue.

The Rebelion Era Sourcebook

The Blood Moon is also where you and Kyle get your first up-close and personal look at a dark trooper. It's only a Phase One dark trooper (Phase Two is nearly complete and Phase Three is the real McCoy), but even a Phase One dark trooper is more than most mortals can handle.

Dark Forces: Official Player Guide

Dark Forces introduces a deadly super army of mechanized stormtrooper replacements known as dark troopers, created by aging Admiral Mohc to anihilate the Alliance. With heavy weapons and near-impenetrable armor, they are like condensed walkers, in terms of massive destructive power, but are able to infiltrate Rebel targets with much greater speed and stealth.

Kyle's exploits against the Dark Troopers earned him praise from Darth Vader himself:

Darth Vader: “Katarn will not be as easy to deal with. He is very resourceful - more resourceful it seems, than even your Dark Troopers.

Dark Forces

Kyle's exploits against the Dark Troopers forced General Rom Mohc to hire Boba Fett, the most dangerous bounty hunter in the galaxy and an accomplished Jedi killer. Kyle is able to fight Fett to a stand-still:

Months after the evacuation of Yavin 4, he went after General Mohc's automated Dark Troopers. Katarn followed the trail from a bombed-out rebel outpost on Talay to Mohc's ship the Arc Hammer. Along the way he rescued Crix Madine from prison and battled Boba Fett to a stand still.

The New Essential Guide to Characters

He shut down the Empire's Dark Trooper program permanently, helped General Crix Madine defect to the Rebellion, and became one of the few heroes to go toe-to-toe with Boba Fett and live to tell about it."

After boarding the Arc Hammer manufacturing facility and fighting his way through an army of stormtroopers and combat droids (including several Dark Troopers), Kyle defeats General Rom Mohc in hand-to-hand combat. Rom Mohc was a highly decorated Imperial officer obsessed with personal combat. He was known as a skilled martial artist, who fought regularly with various types of combat droids and had a trophy room filled with parts of the droids he defeated in one-on-one match ups:

I must be out of my mind. The Empire knows I hijacked the Executor and knows that I’m in this cargo container on my way to the Arc Hammer. It’s just me against a waiting army that knows exactly where I am and what I want to do. Is this fun or what?

Dark Forces: Official Player's Guide

A ground-pounder serving under the decorated Republic Grand Army General Locus Geen during the Clone Wars, Rom Mohc saw action in the Coruscant Insurrection of the Separatist's cortosis droid army. A cybernetics specialist obsessed with personal combat, Trooper Mohc fought the droids mano-a-mano, exploiting the weaknesses he had observed in the battle droids' designs. For his bravery, Mohc was touted as a hero all over the HoloNet.

An eccentric intelligence prone to violence, Mohc's mania for personal combat continued into his service with the Galactic Empire, earning him numerous commendations, including three Imperial Medals of Valor and the Distinguished Medal of Imperial Honor. Over the years, Mohc also set up a trophy room full of battle droids he had personally defeated in man-to-droid match ups, including a prototype IG97, a deadly ZQ infantry droid, and Mark IX-XI Executioners. It was thus during his time as a Zero-G Imperial Spacetroooper that Mohc became increasingly convinced he could build a warbot superior to anything the galaxy had ever seen. To this end, he studied the designs of mechanical soldiers throughout history, from Xim to the Sith to the Iron Knights of the Old Republic. The ultimate result was General Mohc's awesome Dark Trooper project.

Kyle displays his marksmanship by removing 8t88's arm with a precise shot:

The bodyguards were reaching for their weapons when Kyle fired. The energy bolt removed 88's arm with almost surgical precision. The droid watched in disbelieving horror as the now-severed limb cartwheeled through the air, spewing hydraulic fluid in every direction, and clanged on the deck.

The scale of the firefight between Kyle and the Imperial garrison in Fuel City prompts Zyak into thinking that Jan Ors dropped an entire team of agents when in reality it was just Kyle:

Zyak turned, strode over to the tech's position, and scanned his screens. He'd seen the target before. One-niner-two was back - and there was very little doubt as to why... The pilot with the nice voice had dropped a team of agents into his complex and was planning to extract them.

During his encounter with Dark Jedi brothers Gorc and Pic, Kyle kills Gorc with a blaster shot:

A number of things happened at once. 8t88's head toppled from his shoulders, bounced off his lap, and rolled across the deck. The monster pounced, swallowed the tidbit whole, and looked surprised.

Kyle heard the voice and turned toward the sound. A mental shield dropped, and the shadows produced something huge. It wore a helmet, chin guard, and chest armor... But of even more importance was the enormous lightsaber that the Dark Jedi clutched in a three-fingered hand. The air crackled as the monstrous weapon scythed through the air.

Kyle frowned, wondered how a Jedi could be so stupid, and shot Gorc in the face. The giant swayed and toppled backward. He landed with a thud. His lightsaber pinwheeled through the air, hit handle-down, and turned itself off.

As a Jedi Master, Kyle is an opponent who cannot be underestimated and few mundane opponents can stand up to his skill:

Whether or not a Jedi Master is encountered in the company of his Padawan leaner, he is an opponent who cannot be underestimated. Though he might try to bring a conflict to a peaceful resolution, he is always able to bring forth his lightsaber, as well as his considerable knowledge of the Force, in order to pursue what the Order refers to as “aggressive negotiations.” Few mundane opponents can stand against the skill and ability of a Jedi Master.

Threats of the Galaxy

As a combat instructor who was not appointed "toward the end of his career", Kyle is an extraordinary talented swordsman:

Katarn eventually agrees to be taught by Skywalker and goes on to be an instructor at the Jedi Academy.

Jedi Academy Training Manual

The position of lightsaber instructor is one that Jedi Master may achieve toward the end of their careers, when their reflexes have slowed but their minds are still sharp. It can also be a role filled by preternaturally gifted, who possess skill with a saber running so deep it is foolish to waste them on Rim patrol.

In fact, Kyle is a Battlemaster, the highest-ranking combat instructor in the Order:

Katarn holds the rank of Battlemaster at the Jedi Academy on Yavin IV, a title he accepts humbly.

Beneath the battlemasters, day-to-day instructors serve to reinforce the proper execution of these styles. All lightsaber instructors are Jedi Masters, and must be recommended by a battlemaster and ratified by the High Council.

Note: The title of Battlemaster is so prestigious that Obi-Wan Kenobi would favor a Battlemaster in a fight with Dooku, who is considered one of the best swordsmen in the history of the Order, in the same league as the likes of Yoda and Mace Windu:

Yoda took a keen interest in the young Dooku. He assisted in Dooku's combat training and as a result, the Padawan became especially proficient with a lightsaber. Only Masters Yoda and Mace Windu were considered to be on equal terms with him.

Insider #109

As a Battlemaster, Kyle is proficient in a vast amount of combat disciplines, and has the knowledge and, to various degrees, mastery in all possible forms of lightsaber combat:

Dedicated to the art of war, Battlemasters are experts in more melee styles than most beings know exist.

Battlemasters train Initiates and Padawans in the use of Forms I through VI combat moves and cadences, and impart knowledge about Form VII to those who have earned their trust.

The Jedi Path: A Manual for the Students of the Force

Note: The use of Form VII, Juyo, requires mastery of all the previous forms (including Form VI, Niman, masters of which already possess amazing lightsaber skills) and can only be learned by the most skilled Force wielders:

Of all combat forms, Form VII was the one considered the most reckless and lethal, and only those Jedi Masters who had mastered all the previous forms could use it.

Lightsabers: A Guide to The Weapons of the Force

Kyle can train Jaden Korr in the use of a double-bladed lightsaber (a.k.a. saberstaff), a weapon requiring master-level skill to be used effectively:

Any Jedi Knight could wield a single-bladed lightsaber; only a master fighter could use the weapon first designed by the legendary Dark Lord Exar Kun millennia ago. Unless one was in perfect attunement with it, the weapon could be as deadly to the user as to the opponent.

Darth Maul - Shadow Hunter

Note: While Jaden's use of a double-bladed lightsaber depends solely on the player's decision, the fact that Kyle can train Jaden in the use of that weapon still speaks volumes about his swordsmanship skills. Furthermore, Jaden fought sabertsaff-wielding Disciples of Ragnos on several occasions, often when they were aided by other cultists.

As a Battlemaster, Kyle has an “obvious superiority” on the battlefield and utilizes fast attacks, feints, and tactical withdrawals:

Despite his obvious superiority on the battlefield, he is still only a single being. He rarely attacks large groups of foes, preferring to instead fight in an intelligent and logical manner. Fast attacks, tempered with feints and tactical withdrawals, are often the order of the day for the lone battlemaster. When in the company of one or more other Jedi, he is more willing to take greater risks if doing so will end the conflict sooner.

Threats of the Galaxy

As a Battlemaster, Kyle is by default one of the most dangerous man in the galaxy, with only a few being able to match his swordsmanship:

Since it is the traditional weapon of their Order, every Jedi has some degree of expertise with the lightsaber. Jedi Masters who focus on the use of the lightsaber to the exclusion of all else, however, are some of the deadliest indviduals in the galaxy. Few being can match their skill with an energy blade, and many a conflict has hinged upon martial prowess of such skilled Jedi Masters.

Threats of the Galaxy

Even among Jedi Battlemasters, Kyle is considered a legend:

Over the decades, Kyle Katarn joined Luke Skywalker's Jedi praxeum, eventually becoming a legendary Jedi battlemaster and member of the High Council of the New Jedi Order.

Instead of switching between different forms (which in itself is a mark of the best lightsaber duelists), Kyle combines elements from different forms into his own personal combat style:

Mysteries of the Jedi

Katarn holds the rank of Battlemaster at the Jedi Academy on Yavin IV, a title he accepts humbly. He studies many forms of lightsaber combat, but rather than shift from one form to another, he takes elements from each and integrates them into his own style.

On top of being the New Jedi Order foremost Battlemaster, Kyle Katarn is also credited with the title of Jedi Weapon Master. Weapon Masters are considered the best warriors among the Jedi:

Kreia: "Is it battle that stirs you, to meet an enemy blade upon blade? Such is the way of the greatest of the Jedi warriors…the Weapon Masters."

Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

According to Jacen Solo, someone at a Jedi Master level (which would include Kyle) would be "a fair match" to Grand Master Luke Skywalker.

Jaina Solo considers herself inferior in terms of lightsaber skills to Jedi Masters, which would include Kyle:

"I know that you Masters - and several Jedi Knights - are more skilled in both Force and lightsaber than I am."

Legacy of the Force: Invincible

By Luke Skywalker's admission, Kyle is "an expert swordmaster", comparable to Kyp Durron, and superior to Viun Gaalan, Cilghal, and Luke as he was back on the Sinkhole Station:

Gaalan struck at Luke, high, low, a series of subtle and sophisticated blows that would have bewildered any lesser duelist. He was good; Luke gave him that. He might have been a match for an expert swordsmaster such as Kyp or Kyle Katarn. He would have been too much for a comparatively diffident duelist such as Cilghal, or even Luke as he had been back at Sinkhole Station, at low ebb in physical and mental strength.

Fate of the Jedi: Backlash

Note: Kyp Durron fought evenly with Luke in a sparring match, while Viun Gaalan managed to briefly match Luke:

Kyp advanced against Luke again, striking at Luke's ankles while Cilghal engaged the Grand Master's blade. Luke danced over the low strike and put a foot into Cilghal's torso, more of a push than a kick, before landing again. The Mon Cal staggered back a few steps, offering a nod of appreciation.

Kyp threw a succession of fast blows at Luke's shoulders, occupying him while Cilghal recovered. "Actually, it's a plan for a mission against Jacen. A capture-or-neutralize." he said, his lightsaber flashing at Luke.

"Neutralize." Luke frowned. He circled Kyp, trying to put him in the middle of their three-way exchange, but Cilghal paced him so that Luke remained in the center.

"Meaning 'kill'."

Kyp nodded, not repentant. "This isn't a mission of assassination, Luke. But if the capture isn't clean, if the choice is to run away and leave him in charge of the Alliance or finish him then and there..."

"Yeah." Luke felt Cilghal's approach behind him. He bent over backward, his lightsaber hand coming down on the landing pad surface to hold his upper body clear of it, and Cilghal's lightsaber passed through where his waist would have been. Luke instantly straightened, catching her hilt with his free hand, and stepped away, her lightsaber now in his grip. He twirled one blade at each Master. "Go on."

With an exasperated sigh, Cilghal stepped back and exerted herself toward Kyle. The man's lightsaber leapt free from his grip and flew to Cilghal's. Kyle offered no resistance. Cilghal caught it out of the air, called "Thank you," and dashed toward Corran.

Kyp looked dubiously at Luke's twin weapons and fell into a defensive posture. "The team will consist of one or two Masters, three or four Jedi Knights, and a native guide. They'll approach the Senate Building through the undercity." As Luke neared and began throwing probing attacks in quick succession, Kyp deflected them close to his body with equal speed and minimal movement. "When Jacen enters or leaves the building, they spring the trap. Coma gas and shock nets as the first wave, the Jedi making their direct assault immediately afterward." He stopped to stare intently at Luke.

Luke felt the attack-the Force, propelling numerous small objects at him. He jumped back and brought up both lightsabers as a shower of old nuts and bolts came at him with missile speed. It was like defending himself against Yuuzhan Vong thud bugs for the first time in years, but the old skill was undiminished-he calculated which objects had a chance of hitting him and incinerated only them with his blades, letting the others fly harmlessly past.

Legacy of the Force: Fury

Lord Gaalan ignited his lightsaber; the clover-like growth on the meadow glowed red in its light. The other three Sith and the Jedi ignited theirs a split second afterward. Dyon drew his twin blaster pistols.

Luke and Gaalan hurtled together, green lightsaber blade crashing on red, a blow that would have thrown any two lesser Force-users back half a dozen meters, but the two of them were unmoved. The female Sith beside Gaalan struck at Luke, but he merely adjusted the angle of his blade against Gaalan's to catch her attack. Luke kicked, forcing the woman back; she fell, rolling into a backward somersault and coming up on her feet.

[...]

But Luke, despite recent exertions, had had time to recover. He parried each of Gaalan's blows, and his ripostes-his blade skittering off Gaalan's and thrusting now at the Sith Lord's face, now at shoulder or knee or torso-came increasingly close to touching flesh.

Luke smiled at the man.

---

Vestara took her lightsaber in hand and ran, her speed boosted by the Force.

One Sith Saber was down, dead. This still should have been a lopsided match, Gaalan matching Luke, the first female Saber matching Ben, the second Saber overmatching Dyon and almost killing the Jedi washout instantly.

But Dyon was proving hard to kill. He bobbed and weaved, backflipped and somersaulted, keeping just above or below the Saber's blows, firing at his foe in the midst of his acrobatic maneuvers. His blaster shots went wild or were caught on the woman's lightsaber blade, but they had to be reckoned with, countered.

[...]

The others sensed her presence. Luke shifted rightward, not abandoning his concentration on Gaalan but putting Vestara's angle of approach in his peripheral vision. Ben turned toward Vestara and-seeing Ben's shift-Dyon did as well.

Gaalan took that moment of adjustment to act. He backflipped straight through the open boarding hatch of the shuttle. The hatch rose. Luke hurtled forward, got his lightsaber blade into the hatchway before it entirely closed, and began burning a narrow furrow around the periphery of the hatch.

But the shuttle thrusters fired. Lord Gaalan could be seen in the cockpit, features beautiful and impassive as ever, in control of the vehicle. It skidded forward, leaving a meters-wide trench in the ground. Its nose lifted before it had traveled thirty meters, and it went airborne.

Luke reached after it, a clear exertion of telekinetic Force power, then dropped his hand. He looked rueful. "He's countering my power."

Lightsaber combat - feats

As a combat instructor, Kyle Katarn slew hundreds of enemies in combat:

Unlike the Consulars, we Guardians don't put much faith in teacher-for-life, and saber instructors bear the scars that attest to hundreds of combat kills.

The Jedi Path: A Manual for the Students of the Force

At the very beginning of his Jedi career, when he was woefully inexperienced and undertrained, Kyle defeated Inquisitor Jerec and his six Dark Jedi. Not only they were all considered powerful, but each next of them was more powerful than the last:

Unlike most Jedi, who serve an apprenticeship under a Master, Kyle had been forced to work on his talents on his own, or almost on his own, since he did receive occasional guidance from the now-disembodied Jedi known as Rahn.

Jerec’s six underlings - Yun, Gorc, Pic, Maw, Sariss, and Boc the Crude proved no match for Katarn, inexperienced though he was.

One year after the destruction of that battle station at Endor, Kyle fulfilled the ancient prophecy that set free the Jedi spirits on Ruusan - originally trapped during the Light and Dark War by Sith Lord Kaan - by defeating no fewer than seven Dark Jedi. But the cost was great. Kyle often found himself relying on the dark side in order to defeat his powerful opponents.

Dark Forces Saga, Part 1

On Danuta, he mowed down a base full of Stormtroopers. He went toe to toe with a phase three Dark Trooper and won, then defeated seven Dark Jedi, each one more powerful than the last.

The New Essential Guide to Characters

Kyle handily defeats Yun, a skilled Dark Jedi who has been described by Qu Rahn as "dangerous and unpredictable". Yun was skilled and powerful enough to defeat a group of practitioners of teräs käsi, a martial discipline created specifically to combat Jedi:

The Rebel raised his feet, kicked the table, and did a backward somersault. The chair crashed to floor, and the agent landed on his knees.

8t88 dragged his still-unwilling pet into an alcove. A durasteel door slammed down in front of him. Machinery whined as the turbolift carried him upward.

Surprised by Kyle's move and more than a little intrigued, Yun moved forward. Kyle, who was still on his knees and at a disadvantage, pulled his lightsaber. Energy crackled and the smell of ozone filled the air as the Rebel managed to raise his weapon and block the Jedi's blow.

Yun frowned. It seemed that his opponent was more capable than the first impression would have suggested. The Jedi felt the tiniest trickle of fear enter his belly.

Kyle sensed the other man's hesitation, gained his feet, and allowed his opponent to disengage. In spite of the fact that his fencing lessons had made use of a fixed blade and his duel with the sphere had been somewhat brief, the combination gave the Rebel experience from which to draw. He concentrated on the Jedi's eyes, felt the Force flow around him, and lunged to the right.

Yun saw his adversary shift position, moved to intercept, and ducked as lethal energy swept through the space where his head had been. It was close. Too close for a complete novice.

Kyle struck again. Though slightly off, his blow sliced through the upper part of Yun's arm and drew blood, which was cauterized by the weapon's heat.

A cry escaped the Jedi's lips as the lightsaber fell from his hand, and he lost his balance and skidded on his back. Kyle approached, and Yun raised his arm. He was frightened, very frightened, but determined to maintain his pride. "So, kill me, Rebel, just as I would kill you!"

It seemed like good advice, and Kyle raised his weapon. But as he was about to strike, the other man's words echoed in his head. "Just as I would kill you." Was that the kind of man he wanted to be? The kind who would kill without reason? 8t88 had the map, and the Jedi had been neutralized. Kyle took three steps backward, lowered his weapon, and turned the device off.

Dark Forces: Rebel Agent (Novella)

Kyle kills Pic and Gorc, the Dark Jedi brothers. It should be noted though, that the way in which Katarn defeated them varies depending on the medium:

Version 1 - In the game, Kyle defeats them in straight combat, an impressive achievement considering their number advantage, their unparalleled teamwork, their superiority to Yun, their reputation as "nearly undefeatable" among the Rebel Alliance, and the fact that Qu Rahn himself considered them a deadly combination:

Qu Rahn: "It is a mystery why one whould call Gorc and Pic twins. Even though one is a miniature version of the other, they look nothing alike. They also don’t battle alike. Pic is the energy, and Gorc is the power. They are clashing balance of opposites, one the voice, the other the body. This combination is deadly.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II: The Official Strategy Guide

The Force life-bond between the two darksiders allowed for unparalleled teamwork. At all times, they were aware of each other's location, emotional state, and senses, and they even shared limited telepathy.

Dark Forces Saga, Part 5

A dim-witted Gamorrean, he was subjected to Imperial alchemy and twinned with a Kowakian monkey-lizard Picaroon C. Boodle (later known as Pic). They became nearly undefeatable team against the Rebel Alliance.

The Star Wars Complete Encyclopedia

"You defeated our friend Yun in saber combat. We are better than Yun."

Dark Forces: Rebel Agent (Audiodrama)

Version 2 - In the novella, Kyle kills Gorc outright by shooting him in the face, and then kills Pic in a physical brawl, despite being taken by surprise:

Kyle heard the voice and turned toward the sound. A mental shield dropped, and the shadows produced something huge. It wore a helmet, chin guard, and chest armor... But of even more importance was the enormous lightsaber that the Dark Jedi clutched in a three-fingered hand. The air crackled as the monstrous weapon scythed through the air.

Kyle frowned, wondered how a Jedi could be so stupid, and shot Gore in the face. The giant swayed and toppled backward. He landed with a thud. His lightsaber pinwheeled through the air, hit handle-down, and turned itself off.

Kyle was still thinking about what had occured when a banshee dropped onto his back and sank razor-sharp talons into his flesh. "You killed Gorc! Now you will pay!"

Kyle attempted to shake the assailant off, felt a blade nick the side of his throat, and released the blaster. Fingers sought the agent's eyes as he reached up and back. He found a bone-thin arm and wrestled with it as he backpedaled across the room. The agent hit the bulkhead as hard as he could. There was a crunching sound.

Pic uttered a high-pitched scream, directed a blast of energy at Kyle's mind, and fell to the deck.

[...]

Pic had regained consciousness. The Jedi was little more than a blur. He had covered half the distance between them and was airborne by the time the Rebel started to react. There was no time to think. Instinct took over.

The head weighed a good ten kilos and was made of metal. It described an arc around Kyle's body and struck with considerable force. There was a loud cracking noise as skull hit skull, and Pic, who resembled nothing more so much as a rag doll, flew across the compartment, smashed into a bulkhead, and fell to the deck.

Dark Forces: Rebel Agent (Novella)

Kyle stomps Maw, a Dark Jedi described by Qu Rahn as "strong and formidable". Even before his fall to the Dark Side and training under Jerec, Maw possessed power and skill sufficient for the title of Jedi Master, while Jerec himself considered his power to be significant:

"I am Maw... prepare to die!"

"Maybe," Kyle replied calmly, "remembering that my friend Rahn already cut you down to size."

The effect was electrifying. Maw's face turned purple with anger, and he uttered a roar of pure, undiluted rage. He accelerated with far greater speed than Kyle had anticipated.

The Rebel fell backward, allowed the Dark Jedi to pass over him, and slashed upward. Maw bellowed with pain, lost his concentration, and hit the deck. The lightsaber sailed out of his hand, and debris rained onto his head and shoulders.

Kyle took a single step forward, eyed his opponent's back, but couldn't bring himself to do it. Maw supported himself with his fists, turned, and looked upward.

"I'm defenseless... kill me! Or do you lack the courage? As your father did before you?"

Kyle dropped his head. Anger, contained and controlled for so long, flowered within. He felt it radiate outward, seep through his body, and tingle at his fingertips. The lightsaber hummed, and his fingers wrapped and rewrapped themselves around the well-worn grip. Here was one of the people who had murdered his father - and not just his father, but hundreds, maybe thousands, more. Killing such a person would be just, yet...

Maw grinned demonically.

"Your father was on his knees, whimpering like a child, as Jerec struck him down. I placed his head on the spike where the rest of the Rebel scum could see it."

The lightsaber blurred as it rose and fell. The blade entered the half-man's left shoulder, sliced through his chest, and exited through the right side of his body. There was an explosion of blood as Maw fell into two distinct pieces - and Kyle felt energy swirl around him.

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Novella)

Maw was once a vain Jedi Knight, but his refusal to take on a Padawan and his general selfishness meant that he never attained the rank of Jedi Master.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II: The Official Strategy Guide

After suffering from Jerec’s Force Destruction blast, and crashing of his ship, Kyle awakens and duels the exceptional Dark Jedi, Sariss. Drawing on the knowledge of a long-dead Jedi, Kyle utilizes a technique from Form V and cuts down the Dark Jedi:

Kyle awoke to pain, more pain than he had ever felt before and more pain than he wanted to feel again. So much pain that it took a moment to realize that it belonged to him - and not his alter ego, Tal. The Rebel opened his eyes, saw stars twinkling high above, and felt cold night air enter his lungs. He tried to sit. What felt like a six - centimeter-long needle passed through his skull and entered his brain.

[...]

Kyle saw Sariss turn her back in his direction, saw Yun drop the lightsaber, and used the Force to "grab" it. The weapon made a slapping sound as it hit the palm of his hand.

The Rebel pushed up through the pain, fought a wave of dizziness, and thumbed the unfamiliar switch.

Each lightsaber was as unique as the sentient who built it - and Yun's was no exception.

It came equipped with what Kyle's fencing instructor would have called a "modified pistol grip" - meaning that carefully cast projections echoed the human hand and gave his index finger a place to rest. Not only that, but the grip was made from a highly malleable "live" polymer that explored Kyle's hand and morphed into a solid, highly customized grip.

Kyle had never dreamed of such a thing but immediately fell in love with it. The Rebel raised the weapon into the traditional "on-guard" position and could almost hear the Academy's fencing instructor.

He had a squeaky, high-pitched voice: "Keep your head up, look at your opponent, and check your balance. The point should be at eye level - or slightly lower - like so..." A steel blade differs from a lightsaber, of course... but many of the same techniques apply.

Sariss turned. Her eyes burned with anger. There was more than enough time. No cut would be fatal in and of itself, but each added to all the rest would result in a painful death.

Then, after his life force had been released and his blood had mingled with the sand, she would take his head. Not that it would compensate for the pain in her arm or the ache in her heart.

Her opponent's skill was a surprise - and reminded her that this was no ordinary Rebel. There were various ways to defend against his attack. Sariss chose parry five followed by a well-practiced riposte. Her blade passed under Katarn's, buzzed as it passed through the outer corona of the field created by his blade, and lunged toward his chest. Energy crackled and popped as the agent intercepted her blow - and disengaged.

The attack had failed, so Kyle selected another. The point-thrust was a relatively simple evolution. He dropped the point of his saber, extended his arm, and lunged. Sariss saw it coming, blocked the other Jedi's blade, and spotted an error. Katarn's wrist was too low, a little below the shoulder, opening the Rebel to a head cut.

She lunged as he pulled back, saw a thin red line appear on his right cheek, and felt a sense of satisfaction. The upstart had been lucky - but she would literally cut him down to size. Yun would be revenged.

Kyle saw a flash of color and heard the blade sizzle past his face. His nostrils were filled with the odor of burnt flesh. His own. Pain followed. Pain layered on pain. He knew the cut was a harbinger of things to come. He was tired, hurt, and less experienced.

The Dark Jedi intended to wear him down. What he needed was a quick, decisive conclusion.

The agent assumed the on-guard position and called upon Tal's knowledge. What would the ancient Master do if confronted with a similar situation?

Sariss sensed the other Jedi's hesitation, mistook it for fear, and launched a feint.

It was directed at Kyle's belly. He fell for it, saw her pull back, and knew the lunge would follow. He managed to parry, felt resistance as her saber clashed with his, and found the answer he'd been searching for... Tal had been a student of another no-less-formal school of swordsmanship that was half-physical and half-spiritual in nature. There were many evolutions, and many "cuts," but only one that "sang" with the moment. "The Flowing Water Cut" was for use when going blade-to-blade with an opponent.

Timing was everything... and as Sariss withdrew... Kyle knew that he should "expand," following with body and spirit, like water into a vessel. And there, within the calm, to cut slowly and release Sariss from her body. Action followed thought. His blade strobed through thee other Jedi's chest and the point emerged between her shoulder blades.

There was very little blood since the wound was cauterized as it was made. Sariss looked surprised. Her eyes went down toward the point of entry, up toward his, and then were gone. She fell over backward, hit the ground, and skidded on loose gravel.

Kyle just stood there, swaying slightly, struggling to absorb what had occurred.

He was alive, still alive, which both amazed and pleased him.

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Novella)

Qu Rahn: "Out of all the Dark Jedi I have met, Sariss is the one I can say... I fear. Powerful, strong in both the physical and mental arenas of the Force, she is a master, a perfectionist, quiet and reserved. This makes her a very dangerous foe."

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II: The Official Strategy Guide

Despite his lack of experience against an enemy wielding two lightsabers simultaneously, Kyle holds his own against Dark Jedi Boc, noted for his speed, before killing him with the use of Darkshear:

There was a thump as the Dark Jedi jumped down off his perch, followed by the angry buzz of clashing sabers. Kyle held against the other Jedi's strength - and pushed with all his might.

Boc smiled. His teeth looked like tombstones.

"All things come to an end, Katarn - give Maw, Sariss, and Yun my best."

The words covered action, and Jan shouted a warning. "Kyle! Watch out! He has two sabers!"

The Rebel jumped backward as the second bar of energy blurred past his face. He had noticed the second weapon during the earlier confrontation and forgotten it. A stupid, possibly fatal, mistake. Kyle was afraid. Boc sensed the emotion and shuffled forward.

"Perhaps you would like to learn something before you die. The use of two blades, one to support the other, can be traced back thousands of years and was common to both our species. The invention of lightsabers has done nothing to lessen the effectiveness of this strategy - as you are about to learn."

Actually, thanks to Tal, and the old man's considerable experience, Kyle knew something about fighting with two blades, which meant he knew how dangerous such a combination could be. Not that the knowledge would help him much, given the fact that he had only one weapon at his disposal.

"One weapon only?" a voice said within his head. "What of your mind? Are you Jedi? Or something less?" The words, and the fact that Rahn was with him, brought new hope.

Boc advanced. His lightsabers seemed to dance before him. They hummed with barely contained malice and wove intricate patterns in the air. The movements had a hypnotic quality - and Kyle struggled to resist it. Energy sizzled as blade met blade. Kyle retreated as Boc launched a flurry of blows. The Dark Jedi grinned triumphantly, shuffled forward, and "felt" an additional threat. He spun toward Jan.

The Rebel threw the rocks as hard as she could - but to no avail. The missiles exploded as the sabers touched them and hurled red-hot bits of rock in every direction. Jan staggered and fell over backward as a bolt of energy hit her mind. The rock attack hadn't inflicted any damage, but it did buy some time. Kyle took advantage of the opportunity by summoning the Force, forging a spear of midnight black, and hurling it toward his opponent's chest.

Boc staggered, dropped the lightsabers, and grabbed the invisible shaft. Kyle watched, fascinated as the other Jedi struggled to remove the weapon and failed to do so. He tripped, fell, and collapsed. A statue towered above him. Newar Forrth, one-time commander of the Third Legion of Light, appeared pleased.

Finally, Kyle defeats Jerec. Similarly to the fight with Gorc and Pic however, the way in which Katarn does so varies depending on the medium:

Version 1 - In the game, Kyle defeats Jerec in straight combat, an insanely impressive feat considering several factors:

  • Jerec was able to easily kill Qu Rahn, someone who Yoda himself saw fit to be elevated to the rank of a Jedi Master;
  • Jerec is a master of Form II - Makashi, an ancient fencing style developed specifically for lightsaber-to-lightsaber combat;
  • Jerec at his base is powerful enough to rival Darth Vader;
  • Jerec emits an aura that weakens the opponent's connection to the Force (possibly a variant of Force Suppression);
  • Jerec, according to several sources, was amplified by the Valley of the Jedi nexus.

Deeply sickened by the actions of Jedi traitors like Vader, Ventor, and Jerec, Rahn made a risky visit to Yoda on Dagobah to soothe his troubled mind. Instead, Yoda digressed cryptically about a "valley of Jedi souls," handed Rahn a gold lightsaber, and elevated him to the rank of Jedi Master, promising Rahn that one day he would understand.

Jerec's followers held Kyle off long enough for Jerec to access the Valley's secrets and gain phenomenal Force powers. But even with his increased might, Jerec was unable to defeat Kyle or to prevent him from freeing the Valley's trapped Jedi spirits.

Dark Side Sourcebook

Version 2 - In the novella, after using the Wall of Light ability to block Jerec from the Valley of the Jedi, Kyle fights Jerec and ends the Dark Jedi with a Djem So maneuver:

Kyle opened his eyes, saw the Dark Jedi fall, and knew he had taken the correct approach. By doing something positive, by protecting Jerec from evil, the battle had been won. The ground under Kyle's boots crunched as he approached the fallen Jerec. Though stunned and badly bruised, Jerec was otherwise uninjured. In spite of his blindness, the Dark Jedi knew that Kyle stood over him with lightsaber in hand. His own weapon lay ten meters away - but may as well have been on the far side of the planet. Having never shown mercy to others, Jerec sought none for himself.

"Strike me down and the power of the dark side will be yours! It was I who took your father's head... or have you forgotten?"

Kyle looked down at the man before him and felt a strange sense of pity. Here he was, physically powerless, but still hoping to bring Kyle over or, failing that, to secure a quick and painless death. The Rebel shook his head.

"No, I haven't forgotten, and I never will."

He extended his hand, felt the Dark Jedi's lightsaber strike the surface of his palm, and then threw the weapon to Jerec. Jerec rejoiced in the agent's stupidity, leaped to his feet, and thumbed the power switch. Energy crackled as he moved forward, and Kyle came to meet him. The Rebel spun on the ball of his right foot, executed what Tal called the "falling leaf" and "slashed from the sky."

Jerec stutter-stepped, brought his weapon up and across, and waited for the inevitable result. Something warm touched his side, sliced inward, and stopped just short of his spine. It took Jerec a moment to understand what it was, to realize that his life had come to an end, and to start his long, dark journey.

Dark Forces: Jedi Knight (Novella)

Five years after the Valley of the Jedi incident, Kyle is approached by Mara Jade, a former Emperor's Hand, who asks him to continue her Jedi training. During one of their training sessions, Kyle spars evenly with Mara. However, based on Kyle's comment after the sparring, and the fact that Mara sought Kyle out specifically to further her training, it can be assumed that he was her at least slight superior at the time:

Kyle Katarn: "Excellent, Mara. You're becoming very adept at using the Force to anticipate my actions. Someday that insight may save your life."

Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith

Note: Mara Jade was trained in the art of combat alongside the Imperial Royal Guard, who mastered all forms of combat (both unarmed and with weapons), and are "almost a match" for Darth Vader himself. And as "the Empire's deadliest agent", she logically scales significantly above members of the Royal Guard. Furthermore, she scales above members of the Shadow Guard, who are capable of giving a good fight to mid-TFU Galen Marek. A year before finding Kyle, Mara's skill with a lightsaber was stated to be equal to that of Luke Skywalker at the time of the Thrawn Crisis:

They mastered every conceivable weapon (including their weapon of choice - the vibro-active force pike) and every known means of hand-to-hand combat (not the least of which was the terrifying fast martial art of Echani).

Fact File #33

Kyle fought in the Yuuzhan Vong Wars and lived to tell the tale. The Yuuzhan Vong (including Warmaster Tsavong Lah) considered Jedi to be their greatest enemies, and went out of their way to deal with them:

Kyle was among the many instructors who left the academy to fight against the Yuuzhan Vong invaders.

Power of the Jedi Sourcebook

The Jedi are the only unknown element in the Yuuzhan Vong's calculations. Not only are the Jedi formidable warriors, but they can somehow detect even a disguised Yuuzhan Vong. Because the invaders are immune to the Force, they "feel" different to Jedi who are trying to sense them (particularly with the Sense-based ability See Force; the Jedi have learned to look for people who do not appear in the Force). Comprehending the danger the Jedi represent prompts the Yuuzhan Vong to formulate a plan to remove the Jedi from the equation altogether.

The New Jedi Order Sourcebook

"You do not speak for the gods! But soon, you will speak to them. Tell my master, Yun-Yammka, that more of your kind—more Jeedai, our most powerful enemies in this galaxy—will crawl into his presence. Give him that message when you meet him, Ambassador."

The New Jedi Order - Balance Point

Tsavong Lah knows differently, of course. His truce with the infidels is only a matter convenience to him. The Yuuzhan Vong realize that the greatest threats to their plans are the Jedi. Even though the Jedi behave in ways the Yuuzhan Vong can scarcely comprehend (striving to save lives rather than letting people die “honorable” deaths, for instance), they are still considered formidable foes.

The Essential Reader's Companion

During the Dark Nest Crisis, Kyle was a member of a team that served as reinforcements for Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade during the Battle of Kr:

The Falcon's darkened air lock slid silently open. The four YVH "bugcruncher" war droids - on loan from Tendrando Arms and specially programmed to Han's specifications - jumped into the pitch-black hangar. Next went the four Jedi - Kyp, Saba, Octa Ramis, and Kyle Katarn - in their combat - rated vac suits.

[...]

Leia's arms had become deadweights fifteen minutes into the fight, and she was able to wield her lightsaber now only by virtue of the strength Saba was lending her through the Force. Han had run out of power packs - she had not noticed when - and traded his T-21 for a pair of captured assault rifles, which he had taken to firing one in each hand.

The bugcrunchers had taken so many hits that Bugs One through Three had exhausted their laminanium repair ingots. With the exception of Saba who only seemed to grow quicker, stronger, and more joyful as the battle wore on - even the Jedi Masters were slowing, if the tattered condition of their combat vac suits was any indication.

And the Gorog just kept coming, blocking the way ahead, clattering out of side passages, rumbling up the tunnel behind the rescue team. A limitless swarm.

[...]

When the rescue team followed, they found themselves entering a vast, murky vault filled with Gorog warriors. Leia could sense Luke and Mara a dozen meters above, hidden in a tangle of insects so thick and large she could not see the glow of their lightsabers.

"How about it, Saba?" Han asked. "That enough fun for you?"

Before the Barabel could answer, some of the Gorog recovered their senses and fired a volley of electrobolts. Leia's lightsaber came up automatically, as did those of Kyp, Saba, and the other Masters, but there were just too many strikes to block. She took a scalding hit in the shoulder and heard Han curse as he took one, then a pair of crumps sounded as Bug Two and Bug Three launched more detonators.

'Careful!" Kyp warned. "Master Skywalker-"

The rest was lost to a pair of earsplitting crackles, and Leia's sight flashed to white. The air shuddered as the bugcrunchers opened up with their blaster cannons. By the time her vision cleared, both droids had activated their thrusters and were shooting toward the combat tangle above. Kyp and the other Masters were close on their heels.

[...]

The largest part of the Gorog swarm had turned to face Kyp and the other Masters, but Luke and Mara were still trapped a few meters above the main combat, their lightsabers weaving brilliant snakes of color as they spun and slashed and killed.

Leia and Han were about halfway to the fight when she noticed that no Gorog were firing in their direction. Faced with a line of Jedi Masters and bugcruncher droids, apparently Leia and Han just did not seem like much of a threat.

Dark Nest I: The Joiner King

A year later, during the Swarm War, Kyle, with the aid of other Jedi, fights and drives back several Gorog warriors:

Kyle Katarn arrived in the same instant, emerging from the flotsam with half a dozen other Jedi. They quickly drove the last of the Gorog warriors away, lacing the darkness with blaster bolts and flinging thermal detonators around like confetti, using the Force to create a protective shell of rubble around the Skywalkers and Jacen.

Dark Nest III: The Swarm War

At the height of the Second Galactic Civil War, Kyle is chosen by Luke Skywalker to lead a strike team against self-proclaimed Sith Lord, Darth Caedus. While Katarn ultimately ends up defeated and injured, it should be noted that the team was able to stalemate Caedus when all combatants were relying purely on lightsabers, and since Katarn's teammates were no threat to Caedus on their own, it means that Katarn was doing most of the work, while his teammates only served to close the skill gap between the Jedi Master and the Sith Lord. Interestingly, while Caedus was casually ragdolling Katarn's teammates with the Force, not once he tried to directly overpower Katarn, opting instead to bypass his defences altogether. Furthermore, Star Wars Complete Encyclopedia states outright that the duel was taxing for both Katarn and Caedus:

Katarn ignited his lightsaber as he came to a stop a few meters away. "Care to surrender, Colonel Solo?"

"Not to a traitor." Caedus looked at the other three as their Force-augmented sprints came to an end, leaving them in a semicircle before him. Three Jedi Knights: the younger Horn, the Falleen Mithric, the Bothan Hu'lya. He resisted the urge to snort. Separately or collectively, these Jedi Knights were no match for him.

Katarn, though, was a threat. Still, the Jedi had only moments before GA reinforcements would arrive. Their attack was already a failure.

He sensed Katarn's attack, threw up his blade in a block so well practiced that his muscle memory could have performed it while he slept. With his free hand, he gestured at the Bothan Jedi. She was suddenly airborne, hurtling sideways to slam into the Falleen, knocking them both down.

Katarn's blade struck his, rebounded with a snap-hiss. and came around from the other side as the Jedi Master executed a lightning-fast spin. Caedus stepped back from it. not engaging the blade. He watched the blade flash harmlessly past him.

He stepped forward again into a side kick, aimed not at Katarn but at the onrushing Valin Horn. His boot heel caught the Jedi Knight on the point of his chin, knocking Horn backward off his feet. Two seconds had passed since the attack began.

...

Only Seha's head protruded from the pavement hatch as she watched her four companions assault Colonel Solo.

In one sense, it was a beautiful and brilliant thing to see. The five combatants moved as though they'd been choreographing this event for years and had planned, all along, that the two sides would somehow be even. Each time the lightsabers came together, the resulting flash of light, slightly greater than two glows by themselves, cast the five combatants into relief. Around them, blinded GAG troopers withdrew, finding one another by touch, keeping their blasters up and at the ready, waiting for the moment when their sight would return and allow them to open fire. Above, though at a distance from the Senate Building, the trails of airspeeder lights glimmered in their passage.

And Seha still had one task to perform.

In her free hand she held a patch of black cloth. It was square, five centimeters to a side, and very soft and pliant, despite the fact that its center layer consisted of circuitry embedded in a flexible polymer.

One side was covered by a transparent layer of flimsi. With her teeth, she worried an edge of the flimsi free, then pulled the whole layer off, dropping it into the access hole she occupied. The removal of the flimsi exposed a layer of adhesive.

With her own Force powers, so much less subtle than those of her allies, she sent the cloth patch flying, centimeters above ground level, toward the fight.

But she couldn't send it on to her target, not yet. Master Katarn had been clear about that. She had to wait until things were at their most chaotic, their most distracting.

So she guided the patch ever closer to the fight, but waited, waited...

...

Ten seconds.

Caedus rolled out of Katarn's kick to his head, catching a scrape along his cheek, and swung at the Master's leg, but Kolir's blade intercepted his before it bit into flesh. His strength batted her weapon away, but she had deflected his blow and spared Katarn an amputation.

They're coordinating. Good for them. Bad for me.

Caedus heard a siren-an oncoming GAG vehicle. No, two-maybe three.

He allowed himself a certain satisfaction at their speed of response. He hadn't expected anything of the sort for another half minute.

Then, from the corner of his eye, he saw the first oncoming vehicle, an aging Sentinel-class armored shuttle. It was yellow, with spots of rust. He could not make out its markings without looking at it, but he knew it was not in GAG or Alliance colors. Entering airspace above the plaza, it began a dangerously steep and fast repulsorlift descent. Behind it came three GAG airspeeders, one of them firing a top-mounted laser at the shuttle.

Ah. So they were not responding with brilliant speed to an alarm. They were chasing the Jedi escape vehicle. Caedus swung at Horn, a blow meant not to connect but to cause the young Jedi to flinch away into the path of the Falleen, which he did. While they were interfering with each other, Caedus gestured at the Bothan Jedi, hurling her toward Katarn.

Fifteen seconds.

Caedus gave Katarn and Hu'lya a little smile. "You could save yourselves a lot of pain by telling me now where Luke has set up the new Jedi headquarters. I swear, when you are in my hands, you will answer that question."

The Bothan got her feet back under her and stood at the ready.

Katarn caught his returning lightsaber. "Meaning you will torture us to death. Are you listening to yourself, Jacen? Do you even know who you are anymore?"

"I do. It's you who have no idea who I am."

He felt Force energy growing within Mithric and Horn. He gestured, telekinetically yanking the Bothan forward, positioning her between him and them. He felt their Force exertion as it was suddenly cut off.

Katarn advanced, lightsaber at the ready. Caedus withdrew before him. With part of his awareness, he was keeping track of the four inbound vehicles, plotting their trajectories...

One of the GAG vehicles was circling ahead and to starboard of the descending shuttle. Its arc, intended to put it toward the bow of the shuttle so it could fire on the cockpit, would bring it near the combatants, just a few meters above them. The pilot's maneuver was smooth, the vehicle clearly under control. Caedus could see the Jedi barely registering its presence, since it did not figure into the combat.

Caedus reached out a hand as if intending to hurl Katarn away from him. The Master raised his own hand, a deflecting gesture. But Caedus exerted himself against the oncom-ing GAG speeder, yanking it down and toward all of them.

The speeder, continuing its out-of-control motion, slid through the location of the other Jedi, knocking Hu'lya to the permacrete, causing Horn and Mithric to leap to safety.

Katarn now stood so close to Caedus that every facial feature was visible, every scar and line in his weathered face, every hair on his brow, mustache, and beard.

Legacy of the Force: Fury

Katarn and Valin Horn were two of the first Jedi to confront Jacen Solo - by then, the Sith Lord Darth Caedus. The lightsaber duel taxed both man, until managed to use the Force to ram Katarn with a passing speeder.
