Comics That Struck a Chord

Not much more to it, the title's pretty self explanatory, it's a list of moments that have impacted me in some sort of emotional way, or that I thought were just plain awesome. I never really full-blown cried, but I have teared up on occasion.

To represent my general feelings here's a video:

I'll probably use the phrases "got me" and "got to me" a lot.

List items

  • The death of Vic sage and his speech to Renee were heartbreaking and incredibly touching. "It's a trick question Renee... Not who are you?... But who are you going to become? Time to change... Like a butterfly."

  • This is an issue where we get to see Batman at his finest. "Obvious variations aside, there's only one human body. 206 bones, five major organs, 60,000 miles of blood vessels. All it takes is time. Days. Months. Years, spent memorizing the finite ways there are to hurt and break a man. Preparing for all of them. I've escaped from every conceivable deathtrap. Ten times. A dozen times. I can slow my breathing and metabolism to control panic and conserve air. Straitjacket's kindergarten. Locks, too. Benchpressing a pine coffin lid through 600 pounds of loose soil that's filling your mouth, crushing your lungs flat, and shredding your dehydrated muscles? That's harder. But far from impossible."

  • Booster at Ted's tombstone was just heartbreaking. The Perforated Man, having to leave Ted to die in order to fix the timestream, Rip revealing that he's Booster's son, Rip bringing Goldstar back from death, Booster being Rani's surrogate father, and Booster reliving the glory days of the JLI all really got to me.

  • Seeing Boston learn how to live life to its fullest and ride the motorcycle with his grandfather was really touching. Then there's when Boston dies and is torn away from Dawn.

  • It was a really sweet sight to see Bruce, Damian, Dick, Tim, and Alfred sit down for a movie night in which they watched The Mark of Zorro.

  • The issues that showcased Robotman, Negative Man, and Elasti-Woman's transformations into "freaks" were really emotional. From seeing Rita and Cliff questioning their humanity, Larry documenting his past, and Cliff coping with being forced to live in a Robot body, it all got to me. I especially love when Larry takes off his bandages and smiles, while looking out at the ocean.

  • While Bruce has been absent for many days because he was trapped in the Court of Owls Maze, the Bat-Signal breaks from overuse, and Damian practically begs Commissioner Gordon to get another one.

  • "For six years now, every time I've closed my eyes, this is where I've come. To see my wife bleeding out on the roadway. To see my world bleeding out with her. This is where I forgot who I was. This is where life tried to crush me. But it failed. When my wife died, it seemed like everything that was ever beautiful to me died with her. But I can't let that be true anymore. Beauty is all around us here. You just have to fight for it. Even if it kills you."

  • Just a truly epic issue. Wally gains his iconic white-eyed, V-shaped lightning costume. Then he finally embraced the fact that he IS The Flash- The Fastest Man Alive, while totally curbstomping Vandal Savage.

  • The moments with Barry and his mom."It happened, Barry. One way or another, the life we had together happened. And I couldn't have been prouder or happier to have a son like you. You have to let me go, Barry... I'll be okay." I also loved seeing Bruce get the letter from his father.

  • Don't even get me started on Dex Starr's origin.

  • Larfleeze looking at his long list of what he wants for Christmas and reading "my family" at the end of it.

  • Pete wants to give up and Dr. Strange gives him this great line: "Do you know what is the greatest gift anyone can receive in his lifetime? The greatest gift we can receive is to have the chance, just once in our lives, to make a difference. Do you understand how many times you made a difference? Enough for a hundred lifetimes."

  • Mark failing to save Las Vegas, Rex Splode's sacrifice he made, Powerplex's history of tragedy, and Mark almost losing Atom Eve was an emotional roller coaster ride of sadness and rage of epic proportions.

  • Bruce checking up on Damian while he was sleeping was sweet, Damian having a good dream was even sweeter. "Son, you do know this is a dream right?" "Yes, father. And one I finally don't want to wake up from."

  • "Have I really changed so much? I don't mean just physically. That's a bit obvious. I'm always surprised at how easily I accept all the unfathomable weirdness that's been sprung upon me since I've become a Xombi. Two months ago I'd never physically harmed anyone. Now, I've killed more living, sentient beings than I'm willing to stop and count. I never even paused to wonder if it was wrong. It won't be long before I'm like the others who take this all for granted as the backdrop of their lives. Until that day happens, I'm going to revel in the mundane, normal events in my life and hold them close. Annie fought long and hard to reclaim the place where she belonged. Why should I do any less?"

  • "You're everything. You're bigger than God. You could go everywhere... Do anything. The power of the universe is yours... And more. Or you could live in a ratty old house with two moth-eaten animals and an aging wife. You could be afraid to go outside again. You could wither and die. The decision is yours. One minute later. You gaze upon the watchtower for the last time. There's nothing left to do but wait and hope. There is silence. For the first instant. Nothing seems to happen except the briefest of changes in perception-- an infinitesimal shift of reality. The effect speeds out of the watchtower like an animal from a cage. This is the moment you lose it all."

  • Captain Marvel dealing with the death of a child and inspiring the sick children really touched me.

  • Simon learning that his kitty wouldn't come back to life after a criminal killed it. It was so tragic, especially considering it was his only friend at the time.

  • Seeing Billy deal with the death of his best friend, seeing Superman realize Captain Marvel was really just a kid, and Superman visiting Billy as Clark just really pulled at my heartstrings.
