Movie Respect Threads #2: Hancock

No Caption Provided

Short bio:

He woke up in a hospital bed with a fractured skull somewhere in the late 1920's, with no memory of who he is, what happened to him or even what his name is. The nurse tried to put a needle through his arm, and the needle just broke against his skin. His skull healed shortly after that. He took the name Hancock after the nurse asked him for his "John Hancock" (signature). As the years passed, Hancock turned to a homeless alcoholic bum living in a trailer off the coast of LA, performing acts of very questionable heroism on occasion. A public relations specialist named Ray Embrey, whose life Hancock saved from a train crash, decides to pay him back by turning him from a bum who does more harm than good into a true hero.

The movie was directed by Peter Berg, and Hancock was portrayed by the actor Will Smith.

Strength:

Hancock's strength is pretty insane and far above the 100 tons range.

Tears the roof off a car:

Durability:

Hancock's durability against any and all types of damage is insane.

Blunt force:

Rams into a road sign at high velocity:

Gets smashed with a truck by Mary (who is at least as strong as he is himself) and is completely fine afterwards:

Fights Mary for a long while:

No Caption Provided

While depowered and severely injured, Hancock survives a fall from a high-story window:

Sharp/piercing damage:

Bulletproof:

Energy-based damage:

Here's Hancock after putting out a house fire, showing that he is fireproof (sadly his clothes aren't):

In his fight with Mary, Hancock gets blasted with lightning several times and doesn't even seem to feel it:

No Caption Provided

Misc damage:

Unaffected by powerful tornadoes (look at the car for comparison):

No Caption Provided

Hancock can breathe in space (he went there off screen though):

No Caption Provided

Speed:

Hyper-sonic. At least.

Travel velocity:

He launches himself into the air with such speed that he shatters the stone bench that he was sitting on:

No Caption Provided

Breaks the sound barrier:

Again:

He does that many times throughout the movie, these two examples should give you the idea.
He does that many times throughout the movie, these two examples should give you the idea.

Grabs a boy, flies with him to the sky, leaves him there and gets back down without the other kids being able to see him:

And it took the boy almost 30 seconds to get back down so he went pretty high.

Thanks.

The whale feat is what sealed the deal for me. The whale is around 40 tons, and he threw it over at least 100 meters (probably much more) with absurd ease. Like, it was as easy for him as throwing a tennis ball over 10 meters would be for you. Managing to just lift the whale with some difficulty would put him at 40 ton class more or less, but throwing it that far and with such ease is something else entirely.

@the_red_viper: hey, I have a calc for the scene where he takes the boy up to the sky,

Assuming the boy is quite overweight at 100 lbs, and assuming he fell for 25 seconds, then that's 3062 meters/3.062 km/1.9 miles

Looks like a short timeframe, so even if it's 3 seconds, that's basically Mach 3.

And that's a low end estimate.

They dont have weather manipulation. That storm is directly caused from them fighting and being together it takes the both of them to create that storm. None have any feats or evidence besides this to do it on their own. You forgot to add his best strength/durability feat. He stops a full train by ramming it and took no damage at all.

The storm was summoned by Mary, the only time that the weather changed in the movie was when Mary was fighting Hancock, none of that ever happened when they were together but not fighting. It didn't happen when she threw him through the kitchen wall in their home. She summoned it at will.

And the train feat is there.

While they were fighting they caused it to snow, but Hancock created the tornadoes and Mary created the lightning. My guess is...Hancock doesn't know how to control his powers. The lightning was constantly tracking Hancock.

I don't know if Y'all are familiar with this theory but this is the prevailing one regarding Hancock's origins.

In the movie, there's no real explanation about where Hancock came from. It's said by Mary that they were created "by the gods," and that's about it. There's a persistent fan theory that Hancock is, in fact, a god: specifically, Zeus .

Consider Hancock's love of eagles. An eagle served as Zeus' messenger and companion . And remember at the end of Hancock when he flies off with an eagle?

Also, At one point, Mary says that she and Hancock are brother and sister. Then she later says they're married. That's pretty gross, but it also could be a reference to Zeus and Hera, who were both siblings and lovers. Yeah, the Greeks were freaky like that.

Regarding the storms apparently Hancock can control and summon high winds and tornadoes as displayed in the fight against Mary. Although its never directly stated in the film, the director Peter Berg has reportedly clarified that is is in fact Hancock who is summoning the tornadoes and Mary is summoning the lightning. Fits well with the Zeus theory too.

I don't know how much I subscribe to that theory, but it's very cool nevertheless.

If Peter Berg really did confirm that, then it's something else entirely. If you can provide the source (video/interview/article/whatever), then I'd gladly put it in the OP and give you credit for it. However, with no evidence, it is still open to interpretation whether it was Hancock or Mary who caused the weather changes (I always thought it was Mary. She even stated that she was more powerful than Hancock earlier in the movie).

@the_red_viper: Good question...and the answer is he didn't. He did get shocked a lot, though. That's just what environmental destruction does.

Well, in the scene, the three twisters appeared around Hancock, surrounding him. In my eyes it always looked as if Mary summoned them to attack him. Point being, it's open to interpretation whether it was him or her who controlled the weather, but if @deltahuman can find where Berg stated that it was Hancock who was responsible for it then it's something else entirely.

@the_red_viper: I thought the same before. If Peter Berg really didn't state it was Hancock who created the tornadoes, then Hancock created the tornadoes after he got furious and escaped from truck sized rubble. Mary said she was stronger than Hancock, but at the end Hancock ultimately pinned Mary down. It's obvious Mary is lying.
