Game of Thrones Respect Threads #6: Arya Stark

This one was requested a while back, so let's do it. Arya isn't a straightforward warrior like Jaime/Sandor/Brienne/Bronn, so this will be a bit different. She started out season 7 with one of the most badass scenes in the show so far and this season will probably have many more great scenes of her, so look out for this thread updating with time.

Arya Stark:

Arya Stark is the third child of Eddard and Catelyn Stark. She always had a very un-lady-like nature, and preferred playing and sparring with her brothers and the other boys rather than doing what was expected of her as a highborn lady, such as knitting, wearing dresses or not being filthy (in complete contrast to her older sister, Sansa).

Arya and her sister accompanied their father to King's Landing after he was appointed as Hand of the King. When Lord Eddard was betrayed and taken prisoner, Ser Meryn Trant and a group of soldiers were sent to capture Arya, but she was saved by Syrio Forel - her sword fighting tutor - and escaped. She was found by Yoren, a Night's Watch recruiter, who took her along with him on his way to the wall with the new recruits. However, their convoy was attacked on the way by Amory Lorch and his men and Yoren was killed. Arya had lived her life on the roads since then, meeting a lot of people and learning how to fight and survive, as well as some other, cooler tricks. From the moment her father was executed, Arya began forming a list of everyone who wronged her and her family, and swore vengeance on each and every one of them.

Arya is a fan-favorite, and one of my top-five favorites both in the show and in the books. Her storyline is packed with action and great moments, and is getting better by the moment. The harsh experiences that she went through formed her from a helpless little girl into a hardened killer.

In the show, Arya is portrayed by the actress Maisie Williams.

Skill/fighting prowess/physicals:

Arya is a very good fighter. However that matters little, because she is an assassin, not a conventional warrior. Her physicals are also not much because she is, after all, just a little girl - but she has some impressive showings here and there nevertheless.

When Bran was practicing his archery and doing pretty horribly because he's a useless little brat who's only good at getting his friends killed, Arya came from behind him and bullseye'd the target on her first try:

After a few training sessions with Syrio Forel, Arya is starting to improve:

While traveling with the Brotherhood Without Banners, Arya once again shows some good accuracy with a bow:

After each hit, Arya names the person she
After each hit, Arya names the person she "killed" with it: Joffrey, Cersei and Ilyn Payne (respectively). She then tells Anguy that she hit right where she wanted to - face, tits, balls.

During a fight in an inn where the Hound is fighting Polliver's men, Arya kills one of the men with his own sword:

She then proceeds to kill Polliver himself:

Arya and the Hound are attacked by Rorge and Biter on their way to the Vale. After the Hound kills Biter, Arya kills Rorge:

After traveling to the House of Black and White and beginning her training with the Faceless Men, Arya loses her eyesight. The Waif trains her to fight without seeing, and after taking a few savage beatdowns, Arya matches and even outperforms the Waif:

After being severely injured by the Waif, Arya still has some fight left in her and she manages to push the Waif away and escape:

After escaping the Waif, Arya is seeks out Lady Crane, an actress that Arya was supposed to kill but chose to spare (which is why the Waif tried to kill Arya in the first place). Lady Crane takes Arya to her home and treats her injuries, but soon after that the Waif finds them and kills Lady Crane. Arya, whose wounds are not yet healed, jumps from a second story balcony like nothing:

The Waif then chases Arya for a few minutes through the streets of Braavos. Remember that Arya's wounds were still not healed, and they even reopened at some point during the chase:

After a long chase and with her wounds reopened, Arya gets back to the place where she was sleeping after leaving the House of Black and White. She grabs Needle and extinguishes the candle, and then kills the Waif in the darkness:

Arya then sneaks back to the House of Black and White with the Waif's face that she cut off and creeps up on Jaqen H'ghar:

After returning home to Winterfell, Arya spars with Brienne and shows some very impressive skill and agility:

The duel ends with a stalemate more or less:

Brienne arguably did have a slight upper hand in that
Brienne arguably did have a slight upper hand in that "stalemate", and she was holding back in that training session. Still, a very solid showing for Arya here.

Faceless Man skills:

Arya's skills as a Faceless Man allow her to change her entire character at will. She can change not only her face, but also her appearance in general (including skin color, height, body etc) and even her voice.

Arya's Faceless Man skills grow better every time she uses them. First time we see her change her face, she was looking like a little girl, posing as a whore in a brothel in Braavos:

Second time was after travelling back to Westeros, she wore the face of a dark skinned woman and posed as a serving girl in the Twins:

Needless to say what happened to Walder Frey after that.

Third time was shortly after the second. Arya wore the face of Walder Frey and held a feast in the Twins in which she poisoned all the remaining Freys:

Personality:

Arya is a very willful girl. She very often doesn't listen to authority and is not afraid to confront her superiors, or people who are bigger/stronger than her.

Her favorite sibling (who isn't even her sibling) is Jon Snow:

After Joffrey attacks Arya and her friend Mycah in the woods on their way to King's Landing, Arya's direwolf Nymeria pounces at Joffrey and bites him. Arya is then brought before the king to tell her own version of the story (Joffrey lied when telling his obviously). After King Robert hears the two contradictory versions of the story, Sansa, who was also present at the scene, is brought forth to tell what she saw. Sansa avoids telling the truth by saying she can't remember what happened, and Arya, in her anger, pulls Sansa's hair and hits her, even though she is standing in front of the king, the queen, her own father and countless other people:

Arya refuses to come with Meryn Trant and his men when they tell her that they were sent by her father to bring her to him:

Arya holds her own when being bullied by Hot Pie and Lommy (who later became her friends):

Arya is very clever. After saving Jaqen, Rorge and Biter from a fire, Jaqen tells Arya that he owes her 3 deaths. For her third death, Arya gives Jaqen his own name. Jaqen asks Arya to unname him, and she tells him that she will do it only if he helps her and her friends escape Harrenhal:

Arya confronts Melisandre after the latter pays the Brotherhood Without Banners to let her take Gendry:

Despite all she went through, and despite the training she got from the Faceless Men, Arya is not a murderer. When she is tasked with killing Lady Crane, she chooses to spare her and prevents her from drinking a poisoned drink because she finds out that Lady Crane is a good person and doesn't deserve to die:

Epic quotes by Arya:

To Jon:

"Sansa can keep her sewing needles... I've got a needle of my own."

To two men of the city watch:

"My father is Hand of the King. I'm not a boy, I'm Arya Stark of Winterfell. If you lay a hand on me, my father will have both your heads on spikes. Now, are you going to let me by, or do I need to smack YOU on the ear to help YOUR hearing?"

To Hot Pie:

"You want it? I'll give it to you. I already killed one fat boy, I bet you never killed anyone. I bet you're a liar. But I'm not. I'm good at killing fat boys. I like killing fat boys."

To the Hound:

You're the worst! Shit! In the Seven Kingdoms!"

To herself:

"Joffrey... Cersei... Walder Frey... Meryn Trant... Tywin Lannister... The Red Woman... Beric Dondarrion... Thoros of Myr... Ilyn Payne... The Mountain... [...] The Hound."

To the Hound:

"You can shit later, there's people coming."

To the Waif:

Waif: "Who are you?!"

Arya: "You're about to find out!"

To Meryn Trant:

"Do you know who you are? You're no one. You're nothing."

To Jaqen H'ghar:

"A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell... and I'm going home."

To Walder Frey:

"My name is Arya Stark. I want you to know that. The last thing you're ever going to see is a Stark smiling down at you as you die."

To the dying Freys:

"Leave one wolf alive, and the sheep are never safe."

To a Frey serving girl:

"When people ask you what happened here... tell them the North remembers."

Fights:

Arya Stark is truly a great character, and there's no wonder she's a fan favorite. She's a total wildcard and quite possibly the most dangerous person in Westeros at the moment, thanks to her skills as a Faceless Man. Her scenes are always fun, exciting and many times also funny to watch. She has many more great moments that I could have added, but these are all the major and key points in my opinion, and it should cover anything important there is to know about Arya so far.

Hope you enjoyed!
