After almost a month with no new RT, I've decided to make a new one. The_Red_Viper is a generous god.
Tormund Giantsbane is a Wildling chieftain and raider. He is a highly valued leader and a renowned warrior. He was first introduced in the series in season 3, as one of Mance Rayder's chief lieutenants and a prominent figure in the Wildling army.
He was put in charge of a small team that was tasked with scaling the Wall in order to attack Castle Black from the south while the rest of Mance Rayder's army attacks from the north. Jon Snow, who infiltrated the Wildling army, was part of that force, and in their time together Tormund grew fond of Jon. After the Night's Watch defeated the Wildling army at the Battle of Castle Black, Tormund was taken captive. A short while later Jon Snow was elected Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and struck an alliance with Tormund with the hopes that Tormund will be able to convince the remaining Wildlings that remained north of the Wall to come south and join forces with the Night's Watch against the threat of the White Walkers. Jon's willingness to step out of his way to save the lives of Wildlings, which cost him his own life, made Tormund value him dearly and he then became one of Jon's closest allies and most valued generals after his resurrection.
Tormund is a very good-spirited character with a very positive attitude and sense of humor. At the same time, he is a ferocious raider and killer who relishes war and adventure. He values courage and loyalty, and would make a great ally but a bad enemy.
In the series, Tormund is portrayed by the actor Kristofer Hivju.
At first glance, Tormund might appear to be a lumbering giant. But the truth is that he is a gifted warrior with a lot of skill, and not just the dumb brute that he might appear to be.
In the battle of Castle Black, Tormund leads the charge from the south alongside Styr the Magnar of Thenn. In that battle, Tormund killed many men of the Night's Watch. Here for example he cuts a bloody path through the battlements of Castle Black:
Here Tormund defeats Ser Alliser Thorne is single combat:
Kills some more Crows:
He can fight effectively even after taking an arrow in the back:
Kicks some undead ass at Hardhome:
Tormund is skilled at using his sword as a throwing weapon as well:
After Jon Snow brings the Wildlings to the Wall, a group of mutineers lead by Ser Alliser Thorne murder him. Ser Davos Seaworth and a few of Jon's close friends lock themselves up in Jon's room at Castle Black along with Jon's body. Ser Alliser and the mutineers give them a deadline to surrender themselves to avoid bloodshed. Davos and the men refuse to surrender, and just as Ser Alliser is about to break into the room - Dolorous Edd Tollett shows up with the Wildlings, lead by Tormund, to protect Jon's body and his friends. Ser Alliser commands the Night's Watch to attack the Wildlings despite being ridiculously outnumbered. Most men hesitate, but one man who was foolish enough to attack gets killed by Tormund in less than 3 seconds:
After Sansa Stark escaped Winterfell where Ramsay Bolton abused and raped her after their forced marriage, and got north to the Wall, Jon Snow received a letter from Ramsay, who threatened him that unless he surrenders Sansa back to him, he will march north and kill Jon and all the Wildlings. Jon and the Wildlings march south instead to take on Ramsay's army, in one of the show's most iconic battles that was titled "Battle of the Bastards". In that fight, Tormund was one of Jon's lieutenants, and fought ferociously. Here he saves Jon, after the latter was dropped to the ground with an enemy soldier standing above him:
At some point in the Battle of the Bastards, Jon and the Wildlings get surrounded by a shield wall from 3 sides while a force of foot soldiers lead by Smalljon Umber attacks them from the fourth. Jon's army attempts to break through the shield wall, which proves to be futile - but Tormund still took some names:
He keeps on with it until he is injured and his men take him out of harm's way:
Tormund then engages Smalljon Umber in a duel:
Tormund ventures north of the Wall as part of a team of badasses lead by Jon Snow on an expedition to capture a wight and bring it to King's Landing. After capturing the wight, The team gets trapped on a small island in the middle of a frozen lake, surrounded by god knows how many wights, a few White Walkers and the Night King himself. After a while, the wights start swarming the small all-star team, who have no choice but try and survive for as long as they can. In that battle, Tormund (and everyone else on the team) killed wights by the dozens:
Judo-flips a wight:
Tormund is an exceptionally strong man, and also has great endurance.
Ygritte tells Jon that Tormund has scaled the Wall many times:
Here he proves his experience:
While Tormund and his team scale the wall, the ice cracks and a large chunk of it collapses, taking many down with it - including Jon and Ygritte. Tormund grabs the rope tightly as they're falling to save them, which requires tremendous strength:
Tormund can ragdoll men with ease:
Savagely kicks a man to the floor:
Tormund remains the last man standing from the Wildling forces after the Battle of Castle Black. Despite having several arrows in his back and probably more injuries as well, he is still on his feet, ready to fight:
After they strike an alliance and travel to Hardhome together, Jon Snow and Tormund are greeted by Rattleshirt (Lord of Bones). Rattleshirt tries to patronize Tormund for striking an alliance with the Night's Watch, who were the enemies of the Free Folk for centuries, and calls him a traitor. One insult too much makes Tormund take away Rattleshirt's cane and maul him to death with it:
Even after taking a cruel and savage beating from Smalljon Umber, Tormund manages to break free of his hold, bites off a chunk of his flesh and stabs him to death with his dagger:
Despite sustaining many harsh injuries in the Battle of the Bastards, Tormund can still sprint uphill to Winterfell alongside Jon Snow and Wun Wun:
At some point in the battle of the frozen lake, Tormund gets swarmed by wights. He manages to hold his ground for quite a while despite the ridiculous amount of wights that were on him:
Tormund is a good-tempered man who enjoys life and boasts many strange tales, most of which are probably made up. He is a charismatic leader who is highly valued among the Free Folk, and also a man of honor and loyalty who would never abandon an ally in need.
Tormund tells some Wildlings his famous tale of when he made sweet, sweet love to a she-bear:
Jon tells Tormund that his people, the Free Folk, need him to be their leader:
At Hardhome, the Wildling chieftains treat Jon Snow with suspicion and are reluctant to trust him unless Tormund vouches for him:
Tormund was dazed by Brienne of Tarth when she got to the Wall, and developed an adorable, hilarious one-sided crush on her:
Tormund values honor and loyalty above all else. When Jon decides to ask the Wildlings to march south to Winterfell with him and fight Ramsay, the Wildlings are reluctant to agree, saying that it isn't their fight, but Tormund brings up the fact that they owe Jon their lives and they are all in his debt:
Ironically enough, after taking back Winterfell and being crowned King in the North, Jon asks the Wildlings - of all people - to man the Wall. Tormund (who speaks for the Free Folk) not only agrees without question, he even takes the task with a smile:
Epic quotes by Tormund:
To the Wildlings in Mance Rayder's tent, after Jon Snow mistakes Tormund for Mance and calls him "Your Grace":
"Your Grace?! Did you hear that? Now all of you better kneel every time I fart!"
"Thenns. I f***ing hate Thenns."
To the Wildling elders at Hardhome (regarding Jon Snow):
"He's prettier than both my daughters, but he knows how to fight. He's young, but he knows how to lead. He didn't have to come to Hardhome. He came because he needs us. And we need him."
Jon: "How many are with us? Five thousand?"
Tormund: "Eh, I'm not good at counting."
Tormund: "They think you're some kind of god. The man who returned from the dead."
Jon: "I'm not a god."
Tormund: "I know that. I saw your pecker. What kind of god would have a pecker that small?"
To the Hound (just a part of a very hilarious conversation they had):
Tormund: "You're the one they call 'The Dog'."
Sandor: "F*** off."
Tormund: "Heh. They told me you were mean. Were you born mean, or do you just hate Wildlings?"
Sandor: "I don't give two shits about Wildlings. It's gingers I hate."
Tormund: "Gingers are beautiful! We are kissed by fire. Just like you."
Sandor: "Don't point your f***ing finger at me."
To the Hound (another part of that same conversation, this time regarding Brienne):
Tormund: "I want to make babies with her. Think of them: great big monsters! They'd conquer the world!"
Sandor: "How did a mad f***er like you live this long?"
Tormund: "I'm good at killing people."
Right now, the fate of Tormund (and Beric Dondarrion but oh well) is one of season 7's biggest cliffhangers. He was last seen when the Night King brought down the Wall and it is unclear whether he survived or not but we can only hope for the best until 2019. Tormund is a great character. He has badass fight scenes, great funny moments and dialogues and an interesting personality. He grew from being one of the "bad guys" to one of the most central "good guys" in the show. I can't tell for sure if he's alive or not, but if he is - he's sure to have some awesome moments in season 8.
Hope you enjoyed!
