The Fast and Furious spin-off with two major characters of the franchise had me hyped for quite some time and now that I have watched the movie , I feel like the hype was worth it. Well , let's get into the review. There will be minor spoilers , which don't matter all that much , so those who haven't watched the movie can read this too.
The main plot was made clear in the trailers that Luke Hobbs (Played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Played by Jason Statham) along with Shaw's sister Hattie Shaw(Played by Vennesa Kirby) team-up to take down Brixton (Played by Idris Elba) , who is a genetically advanced terrorist. Well the plot is basically that , the trio fight off Hobbs and his his goons to protect the world , by preventing the release of a bio-weapon by Brixton.
Positive Points :
The Action : The movie is packed with high-stakes action , close quarter fight scenes and car chases , most of which were done pretty well. Although not as ridiculous as Fate of the Furious or Furious 7 , still some of the action scenes were pretty ridiculous , but that isn't a bad thing since the scenes and set-pieces were executed very well and looked awesome on the big screen.
Hobbs and Shaw's Bromance : Ah , movie bromances , be it 'Thor and Hulk' or 'Captain Kirk and Spock' are always good to see in a movie when done right. Hobbs and Shaw is one such duo , whenever they are in the same scene it becomes very interesting and some scenes in which they throw jokes at each other are just hilarious.
The Samoans : Well , the Samoans were a refreshment to see , since we don't get to see them and their life-style in many movies. They were also well used and timely placed into the plot of the movie. It was also good to see The Rock embracing his Samoan roots and his "real-life" family members and people playing the role of the Samoans.
Special Appearances/Easter Eggs : The movie is full of special appearances by actors from outside the F&F franchise and multiple Easter eggs. Two of the main special appearances will blow audiences away with how surprising and important they were. The third special appearance was clearly show in the trailer was by Roman Reigns , who pulled off-his WWE moves on in his fight scenes. There were also many nods to other Hollywood movies , the lead actors had previously appeared in. Just giving one tiny spoiler ,
Was Deckard Shaw in The Italian Job(2003) , an Easter Egg was given by none other than Deckard himself , while he showed his old 1965 Mini Copper.
Close-Quarter Fights : F&F movies aren't know for hand-2-hand combat , but this movie has some great hand-2-hand fight scenes , especially the ones involving Statham. The fight choreography is great and the fact that the scenes includes very few cuts between the shots makes it even better to watch. The Hand-2-Hand fights are definitely a standing point in this movie.
Mid-core Points :
Brixton "Black Superman" Lore : Well , he was an average villain by all standards , he wasn't bad but he was that good either. His character was like your average movie villain trying to destroy the world , the only thing that made him different was that he was enhanced to superhuman levels. Idris Elba did a lot of hard work to make him a likable villain and his efforts and charm is the only thing that saved Brixton from being a bad character.
The Plot : The plot of the movie was also decent , it had nothing special about it , but it wasn't bad either. The plot was pretty straightforward which was definitely a good thing and there were no inter-connecting stories or loop-holes. But nothing was special about the plot , so you won't find anything new in this story. But on the plus side it didn't have stupid twists like Fate of the Furious , which did make the plot easier to catch up with.
Negative Points :
A bit too much action : Yes the action sequences were a important part of the movie and they were good for the most part , but sometimes it just felt forced in and a bit too much. There were some sequences which were absolutely unnecessary and didn't need to be included from a story standpoint.
Brixton's Goons : Remember when the goons and side-villains from Fast 5 and Fast and Furious 6 actually felt like a legit threat to the main characters ? Well , there is no such thing in this movie , although Brixton's goons look all futuristic and skilled , but they are barely able to do anything to the main characters let alone be a legit threat , they are just there to get their asses kicked by the protagonists.
Not addressing other characters : Yes this is a solo film for Hobbs and Shaw , so not having other characters from the F&F franchise is alright , but not addressing them at all is a bit too harsh. It is almost like they don't exist and neither of the protagonist know about them.
This was kinda different from the other Fast and Furious movies , and that is good thing. We get to see two protagonists whose characters are not only well acted , but also well written. The movie delivers on the action and fight scenes , while having a decent villain and a very average plot. The action does get a bit too much at times and the side-villains are basically means to show how bad-ass the heroes are. The acting was acting , bond between characters and special appearances were done very well. It could have definitely have done with a much better plot and having a bit less unnecessary action. Overall though it was a pretty good action/thriller and if you are looking for a movie with non-stop action , this is it.
Rating : 7.9/10.
