When I was creating Comic Vine's Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Characters List, I was provided with 194 characters.
After 45 users consigned and 54 users voted, I created the actual list and removed these 94 characters. For your benefit, here they are!
Megatron is nominated for his role as the first, and most villainous Enemy of the Autobots for the Transformers series. Even in Death, he's still the major drive of the entire plot for the series. Over the years, the Transformers have had various incarnations, but the one constant is that Megatron is still the reason the Autobots look under their beds at night. As a Science fiction villain, there are few who have gotten the love that Megatron has.
Futurama is without a doubt one of (okay, let's face it is the one) the single greatest shows ever broadcast on television...and I wish I could travel a thousand years in the future to Omicron Persei 8 just so I could watch it all over again as if for the first time. And while every member of the eclectic Futurama cast has their moments, Zapp is a man not to be bunched with the rest, he stands erect at the forefront of his peers. He's what Captain Kirk would be if Star Trek was fun! His glorious feats in tactical warfare, his dashing figure, his unchallengeable manhood and his sage wisdom all come together to make the greatest spaceship captain this world will ever know, fictional or otherwise. Futurama: Always a classic.
Rightful heir to the throne of Gondor, Aragorn is the character that EVERY kid wanted to be in Lord Of The Rings (except for me, I wanted to be Golem). Aragorn is the rarest of characters, a hero and ant hero all rolled in to one and even though the main impetus of the tale lies on Frodos’ shoulders, it is Aragorns’ complexity which makes the tale so riveting.
Artemis Fowl the second was a mischievous mastermind when he was younger. He was the first human to ever blackmail The People (the world of fairies) and get away with it too. He was an ingenious super-villain like character originally in his youth, wanting only what was best for his family. However, as time went on, he turned good. He is a great character and should be on this list, because it is a nice piece of literature which I would recommend to any fan of myths and legends coming true.
What can I say about Chakotay? well for starters, he has a "kick ass tattoo" (to quote the respect thread here on CV). He also was an influental figure on board Voyager.
Child genius who is tapped and molded by the military into the teenage commander who will win humanity's fight against a bug-like alien race.
A former mercenary, Jayne Cobb is part of the crew aboard Serenity and is in charge of "Public Relations".
Kit Fisto was a renowned Nautolan Jedi Master in the waning years of the Galactic Republic. He is best known for his friendly smile.
Alien who joined the crew of the USS Voyager. He serves as chef to the crew, often times creating horrible meals.
The acclaimed "One" to save all of humanity in Earth's bleak future from the machines. He fights with uncalculable powers inside the Matrix and gives hope to all of humanities resistance.
Chekov is the Russian navigator of the Enterprise. Introduced at a time when the Cold War raged, Chekov was an important step towards acceptance of Russians and other people from communist states. He continues to play a major role in the pivotal science-fiction franchise today, as seen in the most recent Star Trek movie.
The soul of Dragonlance, Raistlin was the major force in driving the Dragonlance series to have over 190 novels along with comics, games, and an animated movie. The character would go from being a sickly mage to one of the most powerful beings in existence. One of the best fantasy characters ever the list would not be complete without him.Â
Even though he was the primary villain for the Lord of the rings, he still appeared much before that, in the story of the Hobbit. with this appearance, JRR Tolkien already had the idea of making Sauron an antagonist that would be among the most memorable in history. With JRR Tolkiens more expanded universe, he gives Sauron a painful backstory, proceeding what was done to Darth Vader, before he was even created.
The original mad scientist, Victor Frankenstein is quite possibly the most famous over achiever of all time, but also one of the most confusing. Most people still believe that it is the monster Victor creates that is called Frankenstein, but of course, it is not. It is Victor Frankenstein himself that is the catalyst of the story and through his mad pursuit of the beast he created, ultimately, its tragic victim.
Hailing from the planet Earth, Adam Strange is a throwback to the heroes of the pulp era, a man drawn into the midst of cosmic forces and finds himself the only man for the job because, well, he’s a huMAN! Transported to the planet Rann, Strange adopts his iconic costume and develops a love interest with the alien Alanna. Strange still appears in comics today and is one of the few heroes created in the 50’s to do so.
There have been a few parodies of Star Trek, but none of them as great as Galaxy Quest. One of the highlights of the film is the cast (which includes the likes of Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Tony Shalhoub) and one of my favorite characters has to be Alexander Dane. Played by the great Alan Rickman (who a lot of people will remember as Snape from Harry Potter), this character is the a take off on Leonard Nemoy with his role of Spock overshadowing his other work. He is an enertaining character who should be on this list and remember: "Never give up! Never surrender!"
The crew of the star ship Voyager faced many obsticles on their way back to the Delta Quadrant and the one who faced the most obsticles has to be B'Elanna Torres. Being a human-klingon hybrid, B'Elanna already faced discrimination. However, when she and her fellow Maquis were forced to join forces with their former enemies abord Voyager, she faced even more struggles. However, she persurvered and became one of Kathryn Janeway's close friends.
Played by Gates McFadden, Beverly Crusher was the Sawbones of the Next Generation. She was force all her own on the Enterprise, because when she rallied for a cause she would see it through. At one point, when Picard has the chance to destroy the entire Borg collective, she protests because it would sacrifice a single life. She was also a caring mother who would do anything for her son, Wesley. She is important, because she develops the role of doctor away from the Bones of Kirk’s generation and toward a more feminine personae.
He is the Vampire King of Louisiana, a southern gentleman, and can "Sookie" with absolute percesion.....SOOKIE!!!
In the time I've been watching Doctor Who, there is one thing I know for sure, there are no straight men, just men who have never met Jack Harkness. A time traveling agent who's so charming, the most homophobic of southern politicians want that sexy ass of his. Jack's charm is only matched by his badassitude, anyone who keeps a gun up his own ass just in case has got to be cool, oh and did I mention, he can't die.... at all.
Counselor Troi is one of the kindest people I know from the Star Trek universe. She is one of my favorite characters on ST:NG and I was really happy when she and Riker finally got married...
E.T. was one of the first extra terrestrials to be friendly toward Earth...and to reveal humans as the hostiles. E.T. showed hopes for co-existance and friendship both on Earth and in the universe, rather than the usual killer beasts portrayed in the majority of science-fiction films at the time.
Edward Scissorhands is a wonderful character who fits nicely into both fantasy and Sci-Fi. Just like the Frankenstein Monster Edward was a "made" man. Unfortunately for Edward he was never finished leaving him the oddly shaped Scissor-hands. Unlike the Frankenstein Monster Edward was not abandoned by his creator but, like the Frankenstein Monster he was rejected by nearly everyone else. Edward is a tragic character who you can invest your heart in. He is a character that anyone with a heart will love and is a great asset to this list.
The real villain of the Star Wars universe, Palpatine is powerful, manipulative and just plain evil, keeping even the likes of Darth Vader in his shadow. If episodes 1 – 3 showed us nothing else, it is that nothing is beyond the Emperors reach and that all politicians really are scum bags.
Eric Northman is the vampire of Nordic origin, Sheriff of Area 5 in Louisiana. He is over 1000 years old, and owns the vampire bar Fangtasia in Shreveport. He appeared in the TV show "True Blood".
Ezri Dax was a counselor aboard Deep Space Nine. Here character was a Trill, which meant she was a simbiote/humanoid fusion. She was formally Jadzia Dax, but following the host's death Ezri took her place...
Lieutenant Commander Geordi LaForge was one of only a few characters to have some form of disability in the star Trek cast, but that didn't stop him from being the U.S.S. Enterprise's Chief Engineer infact he thrived with his ability to see what others could not see.
Oh my! What can I say about Sulu? Being the helmsmen of a ship can be a stressful job especially ship is the USS Enterprise and your captain is Captain James T. Kirk. However, Hikaru Sulu was exemplary. In addition to being able to navigate through Klingon Battle cruisers, Sulu excelled in known for his skills in mathematics, fencing, and botany. Plus, George Takei is awesome!
Taking the name of the demon from Beowulf, it's one lf the best fusions of both Science fiction and fantasy. Even tough he dies, his comics goes on, spanning over thousands of years.
Janeway may not have been the first female Captain in Starfleet, but she has to be the best. I remember when the television show Voyager came out. I was uncertain about the new cast. It was the first crew complete created without Gene Roddenberry's input. There was so glaring flaws to the makeup of the crew some surprised me some didn't but Janeway was critical. If she was not believable the show would have easily died. Obviously after seven season Voyager in one of the greatest shows television ever produced. I like to think that she inspired a generation of young girls. I know she inspired many. How many characters can change a real life for the better? Janeway is an awe inspiring Captain well deserving of this list

Who has not heard the cry of 'KHAN!'. One of the most recognizable villains in science fiction, Khan is that which is unstoppable, unbeatable, and yet still eerily human. He is the destiny of heroes. But he does possess weakness, and that is what lends him his fascination.
main character in one the best sci-fi movies ever made, The Thing! The character is brilliant and the movie is amazing. to not including Macready would be a crime to any kind of scifi list.
Why is a raven like a writing desk? I doubt the Hatter ever knew the answer to the riddle he asked Alice, but i guess that is part of his madness. As a lover of Lewis Carol's work, I must say I am nominating not the "Mad Hatter" but rather the "Hatter" as he was never called "Mad Hatter" in his adventures with Alice (a common misconception). This character is zany and most definitely mad...almost like a hatter! So to all the other nominations on the list, I say: No Room! No Room! Even when there are 99 other slots to fill.

Perhaps best known as the communications officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols) broke racial stereotypes and showed that both black people and woman being able to work side by side as equals in the future. Ironically the actress who played Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) almost quit the show to focus on her singing career and it was only by a chance meeting at an event with Dr. Martin Luther King that convinced her to stay on the show. Her character would go on to inspire many young black woman and was one of Whoopi Goldberg's biggest influences.

Seven of Nine is a 'recovering' borg drone and a member of Captain Janeway's crew. Actress Jeri Ryan played Seven of Nine in the last four seasons of the television series "Star Trek: Voyager". Her strugle with attempting to reconnect with her humanity makes her a unique character.
The Doctor or Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram Mark I was developed as a program to help should all the medical staff be injured, killed or missing, being unable to perform their duties. The program however was never intended for long term. His evolution from stern program to a more human program who is sensitive to other people makes this character very fun. I love the doctor!
The Time Traveller was created by none other than H. G. Wells in the novel the Time Machine. The novel popularized the belief in Time Travel and brought into existence the phrase Time Machine. He also introduces Time Travel as being a fourth dimension.
The idea of the fusion of man and wolf as a werewolf is not new. Men have turned into wolves in legends since the time of the ancient greeks. However, It was not until 1935 that the beings we know as werewolf appeared on the silver screen. In 1941, the most famous of all werewolfs appeared. Played by Lon Chaney, Jr., Larry Talbot is not nessarily evil. Not unlike Dr.Jekle within Mr. Hyde, Larry is not able to control what the beast does. The Larry part of the being is not evil, but the werewolf within him is, which is why he should be on this list. To quote the movie, "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright."

Worf appeared in more Star Trek episodes/films than any other Star Trek character. Without a doubt as such his character has had the largest impact on Star Trek Lore. Star Trek being the ultimate Sci Fi Franchise would dictate that Worf should not only be on any Sci Fi list he should be at the top of such list. Now...this is just a small attempt to think of the character logically. It would be a disservice to not also mention his great and well loved character and well as the growth and development over the ten seasons the character was on television.
Arnold Rimmer from red dwarf is the perfect comedy entry he's a main stay of his red dwarf universe and is the but of alot of jokes and is a continued source of hilarity in any medium that the red dwarf universe is using be it TV series , book or audiobook.

I'm sure some non-trekies are asking: who is this? well, this is a nurse aboard the USS Enterprise. What makes her iconic you might ask? Well, she was plaed by Majel Barrett (who played Number One in the Original Pilot for Star Trek who was also nominated ). The creator of the show Gene Roddenberry knew he had to get rid of one of the characters and joked he kept one and married the other. Majel Barrett became Majel Barrett Roddenberry.

Twilight stands out from most vampire books for various reasons. One of the most significant is how vampires in the world of Twilight, such as Edward Cullen, are able to live with humans, walk in daylight (sparkle!) and they don't necessarily have to suck blood from humans. The book and movie had a large fan base, both young and old even with the 4th grade reading level. 4 of the movies grossed $2,508,379,328. Edward Cullen himself also showed to us the power of love (i know it sounds cheesy), which, while cliched, can overcome whatever species you are (vampire, human or werewolf). Team Edward for the win! Note: he does not believe anything written and does not believe this character should be on the list, but if the community speaks Poet listens...)
The central character of one of the truly great epics of modern fantasy, Fone Bone is a character whose complexities are far greater than the simplicity of his appearance. Heroic, funny, brave and a hopeless romantic, there are few more compelling characters than Fone and his cousins.
Let's be honest...Gullivar Jones was the Warlord of Mars before John Carter was even conceptualized and was instrumental in helping Edgar Rice Burroughs find inspiration for the famed series we now come to adore and love. For all intensive purposes Jones was the archetypal hero of the "sword and planet" sub-genre that would give rise to later series. While John Carter may be the father of modern fiction and sword and planet sci-fi, Gullivar Jones is its grandfather.

Bald is Beautiful. Few Know this but there was almost a Star Trek 2. Meaning there was almost a second series of the original Star Trek with nearly the entire cast signed on to go. The only difference was Spock would be replaced by a full Vulcan Xon and Ilia would be added as a navigator and William Decker the First Officer. Then Star Wars came out and what was suppose to be an episode for the series turned into Star Trek: the Motion Picture. In the original Episode Decker and Ilia would have been saved and not lost to the V-Ger prob. Other episodes written for the series would later become Next Generation episodes. Deker became Riker and Ilia became Deanna. The rest is history but a nod has to be given to Ilia.

Jason Nesmith is a washed-up actor who played Commander Peter Quincy Taggart in the long-running fictional 1983 Star Trek-esque television show Galaxy Quest. This character was played by Tim Allen in the Galaxy Quest movie and appears in IDW Publishing's spinoff comic Galaxy Quest: Global Warning. He is the Kirk-esque character of the movie/show.

I was unsure at first which character I wanted to choose from this great series, The Wheel of Time has been my favorite fantasy series of novels for a while now and in the end there's no better character then Rand. Although his journey doesn't finish until 2013 (GAAAAAAAAH!) and the whole final book could change my perspective of who my favorite character, he definitely was my favorite when I returned to the series recently to catch up on the most recent two books. Besides being the protagonist of one of the greatest fantasy epics of ever, he's an actually interesting character and not just the boring character all the interesting ones revolve around (looking at you Frodo). I mean come on, having to be the savior of a world that thinks you're mentally insane and won't even believe the good you've done, how can you get better? And now that there's comics adapting the series, I enjoy reading them and re-living the early parts of the series (with pictures this time around) and seeing just how much Rand and the other characters have developed over the course of these decades.
Ro Lauren has been many things. A runaway child, prisoner, even a Starfleet officer. But she remains strong willed and powerful.
When most folks think of a scary killer android, they think of the Terminator, but I'm pretty sure it's only because those people have not seen Roy Batty in action. A man built and bread to be a part of a soldier slave race called replicants, Roy goes rogue in pursuit of freedom and longer life (replicants only last four years). Throughout the film Roy shows several ways that he is better than a human being. He is stronger, faster, smarter, and ultimately when he decides to spare the life of the man who killed his fellow replicants and was sent to kill him, Roy proves that he can also be morally superior.

Not only was he the prime opponent to HAL-9000 when the supercomputer went mad, but he became something more upon contact with the Monolith and is a reminder to mankind that death is but a gateway to a higher level of existence.

Read Ann Rice's second novel The vampire Lestat. It's a biography written, fictionally designed to seem like it's written by the Vampire himself. This book's what has got me interested in learning about immortal character, and maybe creating one, one day. Anne Rice writing style becomes enchanted and sinister and boyish, there're moments in this book really explore the territory of when fantasy things becomes real, and they're memories inside of this mad man's demonically sinful brain. Now THAT'S a vampire!
He may be a half man, but his sheer awesomeness makes him a towering titan among those he walks with. I thought he was great in the novels, but his portrayal in the TV series was also outstanding. He's a very smart and tough man who can find a way to win while maintaining his dignity and staying true to his and his family's code of honor. He displays great leadership qualities even if he might not be the most inspirational character like Captain America or Superman.
