On the topic of ripoffs and copys...

I posted this as a reply on a topic, but I figured I put it on my blog too...

I don’t have a problem with a character being similar to another as long as he/she can stand on their own merits.   Sure there are some blatant copies, but Sentry for example, was a pretty compelling character if you actually read the books.

Does anyone realize Superman himself is a copy?   (Oh no! blasphemy!)   Philip Wylie wrote a story in 1930 called Gladiator.   Basically, the hero was a guy who was bulletproof, had super strength and could leap over buildings. (Supes couldn’t originally fly, just jump high)    Guess what else?   This Gladiator grew up in a small farming town in Colorado, and also had a weakling alter ego to hide his identity.   He also had his own secret fortress up in Northern Canada.

My point is, just saying someone is a clone or rip-off doesn’t discount the characters contributions to the story.   And in battle threads, it doesn’t discount their powers.   If being a rip-off is good enough for Superman, it’s good enough for anyone.
