@Sydpart2: I agree with you on the GL thing. I don't really care for a lot of the Lantern's except John Stewart. But I do like the concept. The GL books were the first DC books I've ever really read. That was actually pretty recent, cuz I've only been reading DC books for about 2 years or so.
Most of the time, I will have already had some interest in the characters or concepts used as well. I'll use some recent additions to my pull list such as Captain America and Flash as examples. I've liked Cap for some time, but just never bothered to read any of his books. And I like Brubaker. I jumped on Cap for the arc "No Escape" and I thought it was decent enough, plus Acuna did the first issue of "The Trial of Captain America." I really like his art and was quite disappointed that he only did the one issue. With Flash, I've had some interest I guess in the speedsters, but mostly Wally. I read the first 7 issues, but didn't really care for it. I usually give a book at least a full arc before I decide if I stick with it. I liked the art, so I may pick up all the other issues, since it's supposed to only hit 12 anyway. But those issues were enough for me to realize I don't like Barry. A lot of times I try out books, it's usually just based on something random. Maybe the cover looks cool, I got a deal on some issues, or I've heard something about the book from people whose taste I can trust.
One of mine is definitely Nova. Those 36 issues was damn good stuff. @War Killer: I agree, Black Widow was damn good with Liu and Acuna. I wish they would've stayed on it and that the book continued.
Ultimates 3 was bad...I picked up the first 3 issues cuz I thought there was a good team with Loeb and Joe Mad, but the story sucked balls. I only kept the issues I did pick up cuz I got them signed by Joe Mad, his art is still amazing.
These guy's art on any book...Frank Quitely, Howard Chaykin, Igor Kordey, and Alan Davis.
I feel like I should have a nice lil list to put down, but I can't think of them all.
