All kinds of comic character fly, it’s an ability that’s about as common as a cell phone is to most people today.
These characters however are one who earned their wings the hard way, by going to flight school and using an airplane.
These are the comics Ace’s of the Air.
Not the first flyer hero in the comics, but during the 40s perhaps the most popular, and they did a pretty good revivel of him in the 80s, and hit plane flew by flaping it's wings!
The most popular Ace in the funny pages, and that despite having crappy art. Popularity... go figure.

Pretty bold making a German fighter ace as the hero, and great art, to bad that if you've read 5 Enemy Ace stories you've pretty much read them all.
What the world needs more of are female aces in slinky skin tight costumes.
Back in the Golden-Age the most of the characters did not have much in the way of personality… truth be told these 8 and 12 page pilot characters tended to abused that privilege.
Tried, true, tough and they flew, that was it for most of them.
I think they use to squint a lot too.

Ahhh, the Golden Age, when you could get away with using a broad accent as character, worked for the original Star Trek too.
The American Blackhawk
Depending on the writer he was either a Dutchman or a "good German."
When the series started Blackhawk was Polish, then they made him visiting American "Bart Hawk," and Stanislaus became the teams Pole, now BH is Polish again.

About time somebody other than Batman in this group knew how to fly a jet!
Believe it or not the Blackhawks were based in part on these characters.
Use to be a really big shot, comics, radio, movies, little big books ect... now? Fame is fleeting.
Started out mainly as a flyer.
Seriously?
Despite the picture here, he mostly flew a plane.
He also had a gang of teenage Air Scouts and adult Air Commandos to help him from time to time.
According to the pulp he shot down more Bi-Planes in WW I than existed in the world as a whole at the time.
Before he went crazy the man was a flyin' fool, and he was half a click from being a real life comic book character.
Started with a jet (before jets were invented) ended with a space ship.
He was such a Mystery Man even the readers didn't know who he was.
The only Pulp hero to have his fiction magazine taken away from him and turned into a non-fiction title as it went from Bill Barnes Air Adventure, to Bill Barnes Air Trails to just Air Trails and bye-bye Bill.
Did well enough that he flew from Crackajack Comics into at least one regular hardback novel.
Somebody who flew had to be called this sooner or later.
Started out as a war nurse, then she became a spy, then a reporter, then a test pilot and saleswoman, but with all of them she was a pilot above all else.
British ace who started in a Bi-plane and ended up piloting jets!
