Comic HoF

There are so thousand and thousand of superheroes, villains, and comic being in the comic industry. From Superheroes to Fantasy Warriors, Gods to Human who rise to the ultimate, it is an endless possibility of what could be. This is a list of Heros/Villians (or general characters) that I believe had some of the biggest impacts on the art. As well, helped make it what it is today. These chacters are huge inspirations for Comic Books.

Disclaimer: The list is in no particular order; As well, this list is still in progess. There are many characters that need to be added. Along the that, I need to detail the info for a few of the characters, on the list.

  1. God

  'The Creater of All', 'Beginning and End', He is not directly represented as a character in comics, But he is represented in the heart of every character that decides to fight against wrong, and for good.

  2. Hercules

  Hercules!!!....the son of Zeus and a mortal woman, at birth he was granted strength that was beyond that of any human. He would Embark on a journey to complete the 'Twelve Labors' so he could be forgiven and accepted by he father as well as the gods. Hercules is one of the first superheroes. This Greek demigod is the inspiration for a lot of the heroic acts of the superheroes that follow him.

  3. Superman

  'The Last Son of Krypton', Superman was the first Comic Book Superhero. This prototype created the bar superheroes, that followed, would have to reach. After a century of ups and downs, and thousands of new heroes, this "Man of Steel" is still going strong.

• 

  4. Batman

  Batman came shortly after Superman; making the case straight that "you don't have to have superpowers to be a superhero (just highly educated, a well trained detective, scientist, martial artist, and the prep skills to beat gods with enough time). This 'Avenger of The Night' showed time and time again that he can stand with the Big Boys. Also, being the first dark hero, he helped established the anti-hero.

  5. Spider-Man

  'You Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man', This nerdy teen superhero showed that teens/kids can do more then just be help. With his many problems that ruined his normal life, it was very easy for comic's core demographic to relate to him. Because of this, he rushed to the front of the herd of 60s heroes, and never looked back.

  6. Doc Savage

  Doc Savage is one of the most popular heroes of his era. Influencing the likes of the early superheroes adventures, morals, and abilities. Doc Savage was the the template for many of founding heroes of the Golden Age. He was the 'Man of Bronze' before a 'Man of Steel', and the 'World's Greatest Detective' long before Batman.

  7. Wonder Woman

  The first widely recognizable female Comic Book Superhero, Princess Diana of the Amazons showed that men aren't the only ones who could save the world. With her strength, which could rival superman, and her will, she quickly found her place among the greats.

  8. Doctor Doom

  The first Comic Book SuperVillian, Doctor Doom came around in the Silver Age to take over the world. His plans of terror have kept him a favorite for many years. Now, he's arguably the most dangerous villain in Marvel U.

  9. Conan

  Conan is the template from which all barbarian/fantasy/sword-and-sorcery heroes are somewhat based [of course theirs Mythology, Folk Lore, Myths, Legends, and History but.....forget about all that]. With his incredibly manly aura, his brutality, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Conan the Barbarian in one of the first Comic Book BAMF [Bad A$$ Mother F**ker].

  10. Captain America

  Captain America bursted to the scene and helped us through the war. He beat Hitler, got frozen in ice, and years later, he came back to lead the "All- Star Team" of the Avengers. He is the most patriotic hero we have. Also.....he punched Hitler...in the face.

  11. Fantastic Four

  The first Original Superhero team, the Fantastic Four came around in the early Silver Age. Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch,and The Thing, these four would go on to become iconic symbols of the industry.

  12. Billy Batson

  A preteen that can turn into a God-Like-Superhero by just saying one word...SHAZAM!!!!!!!...This hero emerged in the Golden Age. He was one of the first heroes to combat Superman. And for awhile, he was winning. However, for that reason, DC sued and eventually got custody of the rights to him. But still, he can say, "He was the first to fly".

  13. Tarzan

  'King of the Jungle' and "Lord of the Apes", The orphaned son of a British lords, abandoned in Africa and raised by apes.

• 

  14. The Phantom

  When the father of British sailor: Christopher Walker was killed during a pirate attack, Christopher swears an oath, on the skull of him father's murderer, to fight evil; and the hero of 'The Phantom' was born. A masked hero that would be passed from father to son. Because of this, it appeared as if the Phantom never aged, or died. Eventually, he would gain names like 'The Ghost who Walks' and 'The Man who cannot Die' because of people who believed him to be immortal.

  15. Hermes

  The Greek messager god: Hermes influenced comics a lot with his speed. Every speedster in comics has to thank Hermes for being the first to run across the universe at FTL[Faster Than Light].

  16. Sherlock Holmes

  Only second to Batman himself (and that's a lot to say, on the fact that the guy is from the 19th century), this Detective can take one look at you and tell your life's story. Sherlock Holmes is one of the brightest minds to be created in fiction. His quick brain, knowledgeable mind, and Understanding of reason made him a standout figure in literature of his time.

  17. Joker

  The psychotic, sadistic, clown known as 'The Joker' is the Yan to Batman's Yin. This insane clown would set the world on fire if Batman wasn't here to stop him. With some gunpowder and a smile, this mindless figure laugh his way into the legend's book.

• 

  18. Zorro

  Don Diego de la Vega, a dashing, black-clad, masked outlaw who defends the people of the land against the villains of the 'Spanish Colonial Era'. With his cunning and fox-like (which is where Zorro come from; being Spanish for "Fox" ) stealth, unarmed combatant skills, extensive scientific knowledge, advanced gadgets, and swordsman skills, Zorro could stop any villain; leaving nothing behind but the Z mark of "El Zorro".

  19. The Shadow

  One of the first "Dark Masked Crusaders of the Night" so to speak. He is archetypal of so many Golden Age characters, so much so that people still want to write about him today. Inspiring characters like Batman,

  20. James Bond

  007, A well trained agent, whom could save the world from a nuclear war while being dressed in a tuxedo, sipping a martini, and wooing the woman across the bar. Mr. Bond slyly slid himself into what was "cool".

• 

  21. Hulk

  Don't make him angry, you really really really wouldn't like it when he's angry, thats all that need the be said. But...The Hulk raged his way into comics in the 60s. His temper immediately became known; and what was at the end of it became legendary.

• 

  22. Robin Hood

  Steal from the Rich and Give to the Poor. That's the motto of the merry, marksman, Robin Hood. With a horse, a band of Marry Men, and the ability to shoot an Arrow through the back of another Arrow, from miles away, this 'Man of the People' quickly became a symbol that last many centuries.

  23. Lex Luthor

  Lex Luthor.....The power mad, highly intelligent, sociopathic, ex-president, owner of "LexCorp". Obsessed with killing Superman and dominating the world (or everything for that matter), Lex helped define what a comic book villain is.

  24. Dracula

  The 'King of the Vampire"', 'Prince of Darkness', Dracula; while not the first vampire in fiction, he definitely was the most successful. This Transylvanian vampire is the biggest influence from the thrilling, gothic literature that he arose from. Dracula is very well one of the biggest influence on horror villains, vampires, and supervillains in general

  25. Flash Gordon

  'King of the Impossible', Flash Gordon was a ordinary man who was captured and taken to the planet of Mongo. With help he becomes a great warrior who saves earth on several different occasions. Flash Gordon is a huge Sci-Fi hero who has inspired the like of Star Wars (Heavily).

  26. Dick Grayson

  Dick was 'Robin the Boy Wonder', the first of Batman's sidekicks. Dick soon showed that he was more than Batman's help who had all the funny phrases and a awkward costume, becoming his own Hero by the name of Nightwing. One of the earliest sidekicks, and perhaps the first child hero, Robin is a staple of comic lore.

  27. Frankenstein's Monster

  "He's Alive, he's alive", the famous words Victor Frankenstein spoke when this lifeless sewn together corpse rose from the dead. This 8'0 ft, bolt neck, monster is one the most iconic Horror characters, and a major influence on many characters; The Hulk being one of them.

  28. Dick Tracy

  Dick Tracy...a hard-hitting, fast-shooting and intelligent police detective solves cases in a decidedly black and white, cartoony world of 1930s Chicago.

• 

  29. Black Panther

  The first Black Comic Book Superhero, T'Challa is the Black Panther, the super genius warrior king of the African nation of Wakanda, the most technologically advanced nation on Earth.

• 

  30. Goku

  Kakarotto...the Saiyan from planet Vegeta, who was sent to Earth to destroy all human life forms. After arriving, he was found and raised by a kind and generous old martial arts master named Gohan. He would go on to become Earth's protector as well as one of the best warriors in the universe. This naive, carefree, cheerful, forgiving, optimistic, omni-hungry, happy-go-lucky son of the Saiyans is one of the most popular Manga/Anime. Goku has defined a era, as well as influenced a lot in modern Manga/Anime.

  31. Darkseid

  Darkseid the 'God Of Apokolips' inspired by the likes of Hitler in the way of being a megalomaniac warmongerer who with his physical, intellectual, and resourceful advantages is the biggest threat of the DCU.

  32. Watchmen

  From the dark mind of Alan Moore, the Watchmen was very well the introduction of deep and dark content, that was still maturely rich with substance. Questioning everything in comics, from the heroes themselves to the the realistic way that the world would view them, Watchmen started the dark ages of 80s and 90s comics.

• 

  33. Thor

  The hammer swinging son of Odin, Thor is Old English speaking, golden haired Norse God or Thunder. Wielding his hammer: Mjölnir, which is blessed by Odin himself, this old god takes on all-comer and will make them wish they'd never call him "Goldy Locks". Thor is the most popular old god in comics today. He's still rising in popularity but it is impossible to overlook his stand in comics. And if it was he definitively wouldn't let you.

  34. X-Men

  The X-Men struck a cord in comics with the "Being outcasted because society doesn't like who we are" aspect, which during the 60s everyone could relate to. Add some cool characters and you got a team that'll last for years to come.

  36. Hugo Danner

  Possibly a major influence on Superman in the power catalogue, with Hugo having superhuman strength, bulletproof skin, and a high leaping ability like Superman.

  37. Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde

  Dr.Jekyll is a well-made English scientist who creates a serum that transforms him into a savage beast of a creature soon to be named "Mr.Hyde".

  38. John Carter

  A Civil War veteran who is sent to Barsoom (Mars) and over the course of time his adventures helps him become a hero and Prince of the planet.

• 

  39. Plastic Man

  The first superhero parody in comics, and a very popular hero of the "Golden Age" of comics. Plastic Man was played strictly for laughs (for the most part...he still is), and his adventures were refreshingly different from the deadly serious crimefighters of the day.

  40. The Clock

  The Clock was the first masked hero to be created for comic books. Former district attorney Brian O'Brien (nice name) with his three-piece suit, fedora, and black full-face mask (replaced by a domino mask years later) and his sports background pushes him into becoming a great mysterious man of justice.

  41. Namor
• 

  42. Fantomah

  The first superheroine beating Diana by 28 months, Fantomah is a mysterious godlike woman who protects the jungles of Africa. Her heritage gave her many supernatural powers.

• 

  43. Alan Scott

  Young railroad engineer Alan Scott followed a railroad bridge and found a mystical "green flame" (thousands of years ago meteor). The flame instructed Scott in how to fashion a ring from its metal, to give him fantastic powers as the superhero Green Lantern.

  44. Woman In Red

  The first non-powered superheroine and second superheroine, debuting a month after Fantomah. Policewoman Peggy Allen frustrated by the limitations of her job creates the Woman in Red. As the Woman in Red, she wears a red, floor-length coat, hood, and mask was a very good actress, investigator, and an excellent shot with her 45 automatic, and she was good in a fight.

  45. Hal Jordan

  The first human shown to join the Green Lantern Corps and a founding member of the JLA. Jordan is the second DC Comics character to adopt the Green Lantern moniker (first being Alan Scott). Hes also one of the biggest heroes of the "Golden Age of Comics".

  46. Jay Garrick

  A college student prior to 1940 who accidentally inhales hard water vapors after falling asleep in his laboratory where he had been working. As a result, he finds that he can run at superhuman speed so he dons a red shirt with a lightning bolt on it and a stylized metal helmet with wings (based on the Greek messager god Hermes (Mercury in Roman Mythology)) then begins to fight crime as the Flash.

  48. The Green Hornet

  Newspaper salesman Britt Reid becomes the hero "Green Hornet" with his sidekick Kato. thought to everyone as a villain for his dark way of going about thing.

  49. Kato

  Being an expert in martial arts and an excellent mechanic (building the Black Beauty single-handedly), Kato becomes the sidekick and great friend of the Green Hornet.

• 

  50. Lone Ranger

  "The sole surviving Texas Ranger", The Lone Ranger along with his sidekick "Tonto" and his horse "Silver" protect the "Old West" from outlaws.

• 

  51. Tonto

  "The faithful sidekick of The Lone Ranger" Tonto is a son of the cheif of the Potawatomi nation/tribe. He saved Ried (The Lone Ranger's real name) who was the the sole surviving Texas Ranger after they were tricked into an ambush by the outlaw Butch Cavendish. Tonto has been Ried trusty sidekick ever since, over time becoming more of an equal than sidekick.

  52. Achilles

  Achilles was a Greek hero of the Trojan War, the central character and the greatest warrior of Homer's Iliad. He is probably one of the first peak-human; and was an image of perfection in all areas of his being except for his heel.

• 

  53. Perseus

  The Greek hero who killed the Gorgon: Medusa, Perseus is the son of Zeus and a mortal woman, who embarked on a bounty of Medusa's head to protect his mother from the King or Argos. Like Hercules, Perseus is one of the first heroes and a big influence for superheroes to come.

• 

  54. Aquaman

  Yeah...even though he is a poet to fish, this king of Atlantis is a comic icon. Aquaman is one of the biggest comic heroes of the Golden Age with his Atlantian genes,staff could rival Poseidon's himself, and ability to talk to every sea animal on the planet.

• 

  55. Wolverine

  "Get out of my face, bub", these are the words of the quiet, wild, lone, tortured, silver clawed mutant known as 'Logan'. Starting as a minor character in the group, Logan was immediately seen as the mysterious one that readers wanted to know more about. As his character developed into a tortured loner, fans fell farther in love with him. Logan became so popular that he took a leading role in the movie that created an interest the superhero movie genre; along with adding more to the dark,silent anti-hero character type that batman had made popular.

  56. Adolf Hitler

  Though he's surely one the most evil men to ever lead a country, as well as the creator of a period in history that some people would like to forgot, the leader of the Nazi arm is undoubtedly one of the biggest influences for villains. From Darksied to Dr.Doom, Red Skull to Darth Vader, most villains were created/written with Hitler in mind. Many heroes like Superman, Batman, Captain America, Robin, Namor,and others became icons in the Golden Era for following america into war against this man. This minority hating, German speaking, Nazi leading, megalomaniac might be one of the low points of humanity, but he's definitively one of the high points behind comic book's popularity.

  57. Jim Hammond

  The first superhero for Marvel Comics, as well as the first Human Torch, this heated android was the start of the train that would co-rule the comic industry. With his ability to control fire, he blashed his way to stardom in the Golden Age, and blasted Marvel into the hero making business.

• 

  58. Bruce Lee

  "Be water, my friend"...the wise quotes of Bruce Lee echoes in the framework of so many different characters in fiction, yet alone comics. Bruce was the one who brought eastern martial arts to the western eyes, and revolutionized combat. Any character who has a ounce of combat experience has a ton of Bruce Lee within them.

  59. Spike Spiegel

  A second coming of Goku? Maybe...Spike Spiegel was a revolutionary characters for anime. Appearing in the late end of the 90s, his characters brought something new. Conflicted and deeply scarred, Spike was a perfect balance of tough, suave, funny, cool, flawed, and scarred, the flyer of Swordfish II is a human characters...and a cool one at that.

  60. Punisher

  The bringer of punishment, Frank Castle is a tortured man with a dark position in the world. Brutally murdering mobsters and human's worst monster, he acts as a one-man executioner for crime. Nearly a villain himself, the Punisher is one of the first superheroes who stepped past the line of killing.

  62. Darkseid

  The original universally villainous threat, Darkseid is the creation of Jack Kirby, in his time with DC. The new god ruler of the planet Apokolips, Darkseid is the primary enemy of not only Superman, but the Justice Leugue. A being who plans to take the entire universe under his grasp, he was inspired by Hitler and his fascist beliefs. Inspiring the idea of the comic book's universal villain, Darkseid had a grand influence on comics; having inspired the creation of characters like Thanos, of Marvel.
