I have never really followed DC, and I'm a big Marvel fan (though a new one), and I've gotta say, from what I've seen, Marvel is at the top of their game while DC is seriously struggling (comparatively). Marvel is rolling out change after change, while still keeping things familiar. DC however, seems to be the same old same old. Most of the characters haven't changed much since the 40's/60's, and a lot of new readers don't like the whole over-the-top-patriot look anymore.
Most DC characters haven't changed in 50-70 years? I have to call you on that. The trinity are vastly different than they were at that point. The big introductions of the silver age (Barry Allen, Hal Jordan, ect) read nothing like they did when they came out.
I have been going back and reading the old stuff (I love the Chronicles trades SO MUCH!) to see how all these characters started and evolved, and with out a doubt, they are very different than when they started.
To say either company is where they were so long ago character-wise just isn't true.

When I first got into comics I read way more Marvel than DC. But now my pull list is 3/4 DC. Tastes change, and there is nothing wrong with that. I would say there is something wrong with the fanboy hardliners that put down any comic publisher. Its really not that big a market and to try and put down a section as big as Marvel or DC is wanting to do away with nearly a third of the industry. That's not healthy.
