I might not be able to compare so much since I had a bit of a falling out with some shounens but I can definitely say that HxH is definitely worth a watch!
At the start it is established that both Gon and Killua are strong for their age but this doesn't mean that they are stronger than the majority of the characters in the show. It's important to see that the show values potential in a character rather than their strength.
The nen system supports this by being completely unique to each user even when divided into 6 sub-groups. I think the way that the fighting system can be deemed complex is due to how each character's skills are so different and close to their personality. Having more nen or power doesn't make you the decided champion even when better control of it could potentially make a character invulnerable.
One of my favourite parts of the nen system is that the user has to consciously concentrate their outputs towards different parts of the body which I don't see much in other shounen. Nen could be used as a strengthening of the body as a shield or weapon, invisibility, a way of seeing someone else's nen or of course as an actual attack. Throughout battle you'd have to control different levels of this power consciously to be able to multitask defence and offence which means that misreading a movement could be fatal even if you have more nen. Battles such as the one between Gon and Genthru in the Greed Island Arc already show the thought process between balancing the levels of nen and how important it is to be perceptive and unpredictable in a fight (rather than just stronger).
Nen doesn't rely on power level so much, certainly not as much as DBZ and Bleach. The end of a battle doesn't have to have a clear defeat and due to the variances in everyone's abilities, no battle is easily decided from the start.
Sorry I'm a little tired to go into more specifics for now but I think its amazing how even characters like Killua and Hisoka who have the same nen type (Transmutation), manifest it in completely different ways. Each power matches a personality with as many variances as there are people and so it's very hard to determine who is actually stronger.
