As with most things in fight battles, sometimes mistakes happen. There are multiple ways to kill each of them that they just can't do anything about, realistically, but they can still avoid given knowledge. For example poison from Magellan or from Caesar. Law's hax abilities, Boa's slave arrows, etc.
