The old stories do not die. 0

Peter Milligan is great at taking an old story and reworking it.  He is the man who took Homer's Odyssey and mashed in up into the Tank Girl universe.  His methods are not always conventional, but he does get the job done.  Greek Street is his new Vertigo series were the old great Greek comedies and tragedies come to life once more on the area of London know conveniently enough as Greek Street. The first story arc is the story of Eddie, who may just be the new Oedipus.  But this book is more the...

The Vertigo Flagship hits even higher highest 0

This is the issue that marks a new age of John Constantine.  It has a line up of many fan favorite writers suchas Brian Azzarello, Jamie Delano, Dave Gibbons and now Peter Milligan.  This issue also is the first comic written cult writer China Miéville.   Huge guest artist also grace this book with Lee Bermejo, David Lloyd, Eddie Campbell and the fan-fave Sean Phillips.  All this to celebrate issue #250 and The Christmas/New Years holiday to boot.  There are a few set backs, one being no And...

From Hell or from Alan Moore's Mind? 0

The book that loosely inspired the Johnny Depp Movie of the same name.  Don't get me wrong the movie was a nicely done Jack the Ripper movie.  The real From Hell is Historic crime detective work at its best.  Warren Ellis called this book "My favorite Graphic novel of all-time" and I can't blame him.   It has violence, sex, historical facts, occult ideas, more sex, skewed facts, more violence, Freemasons, Jack the Ripper, more sex, celebrities of the time and did I say violence?  Because I tell ...

Grant More-Eternity 2

This may be the oldest twisted story I can recall, where Grant Morrison is in full form.  He presents the world in ways we don't see it and this series, originally released in 1991, shows how a man like Grant Morrison tip-toes between genius and madness.    To some this story up, it is a modern retelling of Dante's Divine Comedy with Grant Morrison's Chaos-mage view.  If you are not familiar with his Chaos-mage ways and things like the Tarot are alien to you, this book may loose you along the tr...

Andy Diggle's growing up 0

This is the first time Andy Diggle writes the famed Alan Moore characters Swamp Thing and John Constantine.  The story itself feels of older Alan Moore John Constantine, when he appears, he is a $#!+ is going to hit the fan kind of black omen.  This is the worth volume of Swamp Thing and Andy Diggle sets the series off nice.  Swampy is still Super-powerful like me remembered him and the family is separated.  Pros:  It can read alone.  This could of stayed a mini series instead of becoming an ong...

The mini-History of Prince 0

The comic was an update bio-pic of one of the Greatest musical Artists of All Time.  Family Facts to his beef with Micheal Jackson are listed in this well written Bio-Pic.  From the three Prince comics I know of, the two Piranha Press Books and this, I believe this is the best of them.  The Cover is Iconic.  The story is not completely fictional like the other two.  The Comic is not a Warner comic, making it a Fan bias, not a corporate bias.  Highlights in this book for me are the bits about you...

The 3 Chains of Gold will set you free 0

From the two  Piranha Press I enjoy this one more.  The story is fun with the relationship of Prince to the (NPG) New Power Generation and the Romance with Prince and Mayte is nice, even though it is fictional.  The Strength this issue had over Alter-Ego is that it played more with the actual Marketing of Prince.  His Symbol, the NPG), Mayte and the Rockstar life he really lived in those times.  The weakness to this story over the first Piranha Press book is that this one had weaker Art.    As...

His name is Prince and he is Funky 0

The time when Prince and Warner being good with each other is long past.  But re-reading this issue now or reading it for the first time, brings joy to Prince Fans seeing the wildside of Prince is a story that is as crazy as he is.  The issue is called Alter-Ego and that is what the issue is about, its about the dueling of Good versions Evil.  Prince is pinned against a villain that seems like an embodiment of dark sides to him, but it is not him.  The Brian Bolland cover is stunning, it is sad ...

a Killer 3-some 1

This issue looks like it was casted by Paul Dini.  Hot chick and a sexy story.  You would think that this is just an issue for the ladies, but the guys can enjoy it too.  I had to explain the ending to my Girl Friend because she hasn't got around to reading The Killing Joke yet, even though I have the toy set in my toy display case.    This is a very strong issue, it is a good read without knowing The Killing Joke, but it is better if you have.  Cliff Chiangs are is great on this issue.  Has eno...

The Greatest Graphic Novel of all time 1

No comic in history has had as much impact.  It is the Graphic Novel it is assumed you have read at least once if you are a "mature" comic reader.  Watchmen is the book that made Alan Moore the star he is today.  But the book itself had a life of its own, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons just put it to paper.   The legends of the creation of watchmen are really a magical story on its own, but it is best to read or hear what Dave Gibbons had to say about the magic of watchmen and its  F...

Ed Brubaker is deadly at Point Blank - Revised 2

This is not just the prequel to Sleeper.  It is a self-contained story about murder, betrayal and T.A.O.This story takes characters created during Alan Moore's run on Wildcats.    It maybe a small trade by the reread value is quite high.   The story is extremely well written where you feel you need to read it again right after.  I suggest you do, you may have missed something. The story speaks for itself, it is dangerous at point blank and the rounds will get you each time. Pros:  This can...

The new kid on the block 1

We first met Gwen Dylan in the House of Mystery Halloween Annual.  This time she has the full 22 pages for her story and at a $1 you have to try this out.  Darwyn Cooke cover or Mike Allred, both covers are wonderful.  I won't bother with the pros and cons, its the freaking 1st issue.  Go Buy it and then tell me thank you it was a dollar well spent.    The art rocks!  The story doesn't leave with the hooks in you, but it does give you the major set up for the book.    And I don't know if you kno...

By Annual I hope they mean like in Yearly 1

The first Vertigo Annual in a long time.  I think the Children's Crusade was the last time there was annuals. Now that was a long and forgotten time.  But New Vertigo seems to be going back to its older roots.  Re-imaging older DCU series for a mature audience, such titles:  The Unknown Soldier, The Losers, Madame Xanadu and now The House of Mystery is back in its glory.  Pros:  This book can be read independently.  The framing story works so that non-House of Mystery fans can follow the story. ...

"The Space Between" your bookshelf is filled 1

The third and most impressive House of Mystery so far.  This book is loaded with ALL-Stars, writers and artist alike.   Pros: This book is stacked with Talent.  The framing narrative is great and we learn a lot more about the House of Mystery.  The special number 13 issue was a nice treat for Vertigo fans.  This is the second issue to be issued a Variant cover.  Neal Adams knocks that cover out of the park.  Issue 13 welcomes the talents of Bill Willingham, Chris Roberson, Neal Adams, Serio Arag...

The Make or breaker. 0

After the 1st trade of the House of Mystery you should be developing some feelings for the cast that Mr. Matthew Sturges develops before us. This second volume should finish establishing the new tone of the House of Mystery by introducing a new surprise guest and answering a lot of questions we may have about the House of Mystery. Pro: Great art.  A story that at should hook you after this book.  Cons:  Not enough Kyle Baker.  Verdict:  If you liked the first book, you'll love the second.  The s...

An Anthology that works 0

The House of Mystery has been know as an anthology series in which stories of mystery are told.  This series framing stories are written by Matthew Sturges and he is bring new life into this series.  Pros:  The short-stories have different creative teams.   The framing stories are set by the residents of the House of Mystery and they pay for food, drink and stay with short stories. Cons: The art maybe hit or miss.  The stories setting has to be established.  Verdict: For $10 you can't go wrong g...

A Vertigo Must Have 0

Vertigo's corner stone names are Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison.  Grant Morrison more later on, while Neil Gaiman set the famous Sandman Universe foundation Vertigo would be associated with.     These are rare Neil Gaiman stories in a wonderful Anthology.  A must have for any Vertigo Fan.  Pros:  Hellblazer #27 "Hold Me", the only Hellblazer Neil Gaiman wrote and it is a fan fave.  From all the Guest writers Vertigo's longest running series has had, only this story is a "MUST READ" Hellblazer.  ...

The Anthology of most praised writer ever in comics 0

Love him or Hate him, Alan Moore is one of the most important comic creators of all time.  If he is not your favorite writer, then odds are he is your favorite writers favorite writer.  He may have not worked in the Mainstream superhero business for too long, but everything he has done for the big two has had an inpact one way of another.  Pros:  This has all the snap-shots of how Alan Moore touched the DCU.  The Brian Bolland Cover is wonderful and this book is a good way for people new to the ...

V For Very Nice 0

This is a review of the quality of the hardcover, not judging factoring my review of the series, which can be found HERE V For Vendetta:  The masked man who predicted the current state of Britain and what should be done with it.  Pro:  It is one of the Alan Moore crown jewels.  This political thriller was more then just a great story, it predicted at least one thing to happen in London in the future.  The "eyes" of the government are now present in modern day Close-Circuit-Televisions that now ...

The only Absolute --- Absolute 4

Watchmen a book know all over the world.  It is a the graphic novel that is the standard of books to read on a Graphic Novel list.  Pros:  It is the most famous graphic novel of All-Time.  It is a book you can be proud to display in Absolute size and is the only Absolute must have Absolute.  Dave Gibbon's art is fantastic in this size and with the bigger pages the massive layering of Watchmen can be seen with greater ease.   This version is also backed with extras. Cons:  It is expensive and som...

The Mystery Plays around too much. 0

A story of Good verses Evil.  Does God really exist?  Is he dead?  This story try to get to the bottom of such questions.  Pros:  The art is Pre-Alex Ross, but it is just as great.  In fact I think Jon J Muth captures facial expression better then many early Alex Ross works.  The story is presented fairly fluid. Being a Vertigo book, it can ask the serious questions, such as "Is God Dead?"  The art is what makes you want to read the book to the end. Cons:   Like many Grant Morrison works, the me...

G-Mo before he was Pre-Mo 0

This is a tale of love, sex, violence and teenage discovery.  Not the strongest layered Grant Morrison story, but it is nice to see how much he has grown from a book released in Vertigo's early years.  Pros: Great art.  The story is a smoother Grant Morrison story, by smoother I mean it is easier to understand what he was trying to tell us.  The Price is okay for the length of the story, being the standard price for a prestige size story.  The story is classic Vertigo, meaning Violence, Sex and ...

Madness---sheer Madness 6

John Constantine is going mad.  He believe the world is disappearing because he thinks he killed a friend and the "Gods" are punishing him.  The Good This issue is captivity right from the cover to the last panel.  Because of the hype of Peter Milligan's past work, with Shade the Changing Man and now it is slowly being fully collected, many Shade fans have been looking forward to more Shade.  In past issues Peter Milligan has set us up in reminding us all he has written Shade; he does this by ha...

Sweet 1

Sweet Tooth has had a lot of acclaim since the day it came on stands.     Jeff Lemire hooked many fans from day one, with his cliff-hanger style endings. Each of his issues seamlessly flow to the next issue as if there was little to no break at all.  One of DC's head men called Sweet Tooth "Must Read" book, and after the 1st issue you can see why.   For those who missed out on the $1 issue, it is now online for free as a sample of things to come.  But be wary, Sweet Tooth is addicting.  It is...
