Digging Deeper into Bruce Wayne's Past

My take on The Return of Bruce Wayne is different then my peers.  Partly the reason is because I waited to review all 6 issue of The Return of Bruce Wayne all at once.  With Grant Morrison his stories have a lot of layers to them. Grant Morrison is acclaimed because he is one of the few writers who really push the medium to its potential. Part of the reason he can do this is because of his knowledge in the Occult.   There will always be three types of readers that walk away from a Grant Morrison story: (1) Those that had no idea what happened and did not like it, (2) Those that had no idea or little idea what really happened but enjoyed the story and (3) those who understand the messages between the lines.   With Grant Morrison spearheading Batman, the three camps have been more obvious than ever.   Some old fans have left the series and have not comeback, many have stayed on for the ride and try to understand as much as they can.   The following reviews are more about the Occult symbols and why it is making Batman the level of young Vertigo when Grant Morrison was making his name.

I would love to talk about the comics here or on the reviews itself.  Grant Morrison is writing comics we can be analytical with and I am loving it.

I'd argue it's the best run DC has EVER put out (not including Vertigo)

Budget-wise I had to give up The Green Lantern stuff so I can keep reading G-Mo's Batman and I don't regret it at all.

thanks :D
I tried to educate, since a lot of people are bogged down by G-Mo's layers, I tried to point out things that may have been missed.  Thanks for reading them.

See the problem for me is with grant morrison it seems like his work goes off on a tangent sometimes. it makes it hard to track or whether he is being serious or not. but one thing i have noticed about his writing is it works like a detective story where he gives you bits of clues on how things will be explained. and to sum up his work on the return of bruce wayne this was the last piece of Final Crisis that we can now lay that story to rest.

I am glad you mentioned the "detective" bit, I was holding off saying it.  But that is what makes Grant Morrison's work in general so great, it is the spirit of "detective" comics. Thing are not just a "Story", it is a "detective" story, those who look for more clues, understand it better.  Final Crisis does now work better with Bruce back.

Like everyone i know says this story was separating bruce wayne from batman to me which was not the case. it was the detective surviving, trying to remember what happened and how to fix the problem known as Darkseid. i find that FInal Crisis wise, and from a business stand point morrison damn near scared off any new comic readers with his complex story line. but in turn set up for a great chain of events for batman.

For me though i found it really came together with Batman and Robin #16 where bruce is back. how Thomas Wayne and the whole return of bruce wayne series really pulled together.

@Trodorne:  For sure, what is said and done after the fact Morrison's run is brilliant.  No trying to insult new readers, yes his run is not a good jump in point.  But in retrospective, a new reader at the time of his run, shouldn't be reading Batman monthly, but looking into other great old stories, like The Killing Joke, Arkham, Venom, etc.  There is so much good Batman stories in trade, just jumping in wouldn't be good.  Even stuff like No Man's Land should of been read in trade first.  With Morrison refocusing Batman, he has raised the series to new heights.  I am glad DC let him tell his story.

With things no settled, hopefully his run will elevate readers understand of comics

Grant Morrison can make people's mind become a clusterf**k. The first three issues starts up a bit too slow for my taste, except for the last few pages in them.
I don't know why, but my least favorite out of the six is the third issue. It's not a bad issue, it just expected a little more from him being a pirate version of Batman.
Overall, SOMEHOW, Morrison made it come all together. There's a lot of backtracking to do, but I enjoyed Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne. I'm going to wait till the tradeback comes out to review it.
Great summary reviews!

Great reads, mate. I thoroughly enjoyed them. I loved the way Bruce was effectively redefining himself every issue, and that each time, he was always the emissary of the Bat. I love Existential philsophy, and this comic had it in spades.

I know you planned it that way ;)
Personally... I did not, since I waited to read them so closely together.  This could be why I started seeing the patterns by issue #3.  If I read it when it was released... I don't know what I would of been thinking.

In my opinion, that's the best way to read Morrison's Batman. Collected beats individual releases easily with this run.

You can be analytical with any comic...it's just far easier/more interesting with Morrison's writing.

agreed, but not everyone thinks Morrison's writing is easy.
