Naga Sadow Respect Thread

Naga Sadow is one of my favorite Sith and an interesting character. He's generally simply regarded as featless or too ambiguous to be used in the battle threads, and this thread will be dedicated to disproving such a notion. If you found this respect thread interesting, check out my Marka Ragnos and Ludo Kressh respect threads. Credit to I_Like_Swords for the scans from Tales of the Jedi.

Respect Naga Sadow:

"Here in my Meditation Chamber I can see the galaxy in my mind's eye…I can visualize vast armies, powerful fleets, invincible warriors…and with Sith arts, my imagination can make them real!"

Naga Sadow is, along with Ludo Kressh, the strongest of the Sith Lords who attempted to gain power after Marka Ragnos's death, despite the fact that all of the Sith Lords were powerful:

Various other Sith Lords regard Naga Sadow as the strongest of the Sith Lords after Marka Ragnos's demise, including Ludo Kressh:

"The strongest of the Sith Lords! The bloodline is strong in Naga Sadow!"

Naga Sadow's mere presence was so powerful it imbued his personal weapons with a taint of the dark side. This included his Sith sword, which became so tainted by Sadow's dark presence that it became a poisoned sword:

Sadow is so powerful that he leaves behind dark side energies in his tomb, over a millennium after his death. Most impressive is the fact that over a thousand years later, these lingering dark energies are still capable of driving Barel Ovair half-insane. Ovair is powerful enough to conceal his dark side presence and Sith heritage from the Jedi Order, and stand in the Jedi Council Chamber with his dark self undetected:

There, they encountered the dark energies still lingering in Naga Sadow’s tomb.

Sadow is one of the most notable Sith Inquisitors in history:

A description of Inquisitors, among which Naga Sadow was one of the most prominent:

To be a Sith requires strength, confidence and sheer power. But to become a Sith inquisitor, one must embrace the dark side and wield its destructive power with unparalleled cunning. While other Sith might fight among themselves, inquisitors survey the battlefield, devise sinister plans to seize power, and manipulate their enemies into warring with each other. Masters of political scheming, backstabbing, and deceit, inquisitors play a deadly sparring match for power and influence. And when politics fail, inquisitors stride into battle and humble all who oppose them with dreadful, awe-inspiring displays of dark side sorcery.

Dark Rage/Force Protection/Speed

Dark Rage is a Force power that allows a dark sider to increase his strength, speed, resiliency, and resolve. Force Protection is the passive (and sometimes active) enhancement of a Force sensitive's durability to varying superhuman degrees. Force Speed is the passive (and sometimes active) enhancement of a Force sensitive's speed to varying superhuman degrees.

Sadow is implied to have been capable of dual-wielding. As Sith in his day wielded heavy Sith Swords rather than lightsabers, being able to wield two at once, one in each hand, is a fairly respectable demonstration of physical strength:

Entrusted with the task of destroying the Empire’s enemies, the dual-wielding Marauder embodies the teachings of Naga Sadow. Never hesitating, never faltering, there is no swifter bringer of pain in the galaxy.

The swords are heavy and require two hands to wield, except for the most mammoth of the Massassi, who can handle them with one hand.

Ludo Kressh was capable of shattering a Sith sword by smashing it onto a surface. Because Sith swords are durable enough to withstand lightsaber strikes without fracturing or breaking, this is an impressive feat. Naga Sadow displayed the ability to clash blades with Ludo Kressh with equal force:

Force Knowledge

Naga Sadow possessed tremendous knowledge of the Force, the dark side, and Sith sorcery.

Exar Kun used one of Naga Sadow's many ancient techniques to steal the life force of every Massassi warrior at his disposal in order to become one with the Dark Side. This shows that Sadow also knew this technique and more:

There, where he first won their loyalty by slaying the wyrm, Kun used Sadow's ancient techniques and the life energy of every Massassi to leave his body and become one with the dark side. In the end, the Massassi died exactly as they lived, in absolute and unquestioning service to evil.

Additional sources confirm Sadow's knowledge stretched far beyond that of the Jedi's understanding and he possessed abilities that no Jedi Knight could withstand:

"Freedon Nadd said that Naga Sadow was a Sith alchemist…he knew secrets beyond the powers of the Jedi."

Force Corruption

Force Corruption is a dark-sided variant of telepathy that involves corrupting the mind and will of others to serve the user, often tainting them with the dark side. This can be applied on individuals, but also on locations, corrupting and tainting entire environments, eventually turning them into nexuses of dark side energy.

Sadow corrupts Gav Daragon, luring him to the dark side:

Gav Daragon was drawn by Sadow to the Dark Side, while Kressh began to amass a force to crush Sadow, whom he suspected as the mastermind behind the prisoners' escape.

Sadow corrupts various Jedi who visit his tomb over the years, including Freedon Nadd:

Naga Sadow’s spirit, however, survived to pass on Sith teachings, planting the seed of corruption among his Jedi enemies.

Source: The Old Republic: Codex Entry: Tomb of Naga Sadow

Sadow is also partly the reason for Yavin IV becoming an immensely powerful dark side nexus over the millennia:

For well over a thousand years now, the dark side of the Force has flowed through Yavin 4 in an ever-increasing magnitude.

Source: The Old Republic: Codex Entry: Yavin IV

The first corruption of Yavin’s fourth moon by the dark side that we know of corresponds with the arrival of Dark Lord Naga Sadow some fourteen hundred years ago. I’m not entirely sure whether Sadow was drawn here by the dark side or if he himself planted the first seed of its presence.

Sadow focuses great dark side energies through the temples constructed by his Massassi servants, creating numerous nexuses of dark side energy that would be manipulated by shamanistic dark side priests in the future:

Freedon Nadd himself regards the dark side energies there as "great", and great enough for him to manifest as a dark side spirit:

"Great power is locked in these temples."

Source: Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith

The dark side energies lingering within the temples is referred to as tremendous:

Tremendous energies are concentrated in these half-ruined temples.

Source: Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith 4: Death of a Dark Jedi

These dark side nexuses were so powerful that they allowed Exar Kun to maintain his identity after he ascended to spiritual form:

Exar Kun-who didn't technically die so much as merge with the dark side and retain his identity-resisted the dissolution of his spirit by drawing on the remarkable focusing energies of the Massassi temples on Yavin 4.

Source: The Dark Side Sourcebook

Sadow's physical death at the hands of Freedon Nadd served to further imbue his temples with even greater dark side power:

And just as Nadd killed his lord Sadow, Kun destroyed Nadd’s spirit here on Yavin 4. These notable deaths likely served to further imbue the moon’s temples with dark power, further fueling the barbaric Massassi–as well as the succession of Dark Lords who would later reside here.

Barel Ovair is driven half-insane either from lingering in the presence of Naga Sadow's tomb's dark side energies for a protracted amount of time, or by direct intervention from Sadow himself:

Millennia after Sadow's death, and after Yavin IV was inhabited by various other Dark Lords who also perished, Satele Shan claims that the dark side permeates everything on the moon, and that the power of the nexus on Yavin IV was "on another level entirely" compared to Oricon, which has been described as "immeasurably strong in the dark side":

"The dark side permeates everything here. Saturates it. I've been to Oricon, this is another level entirely."

Located in an unremarkable system well off the Hydian Way, Oricon seems an almost arbitrary choice for the Dread Masters’ home. But anyone with an affinity for the Force can sense that the rocky Outer Rim moon is immeasurably strong with the dark side.

Illusion

Force Illusion is a Force ability stemming from a myriad of mental abilities allowing one to project images and illusions into another being(s)'s mind(s), or create actual apparitions.

Sadow is a master of Force Illusions:

Even with his mastery of Force illusions, the Republic outmatched the Sith.

Battle Meditation

Battle Meditation is a power enabling an individual to boost the morale and physical performance of his allies, erode enemies' wills to fight and hinder their physical performances, or even both at once.

Sith Alchemy

Sith Alchemy is a Force-oriented practice allowing one to alter physical features of himself or other living beings.

Naga Sadow is a master of manipulating the genetic building blocks of living creatures via dark side Alchemy:

The most powerful Sith Lords possess a talent for the dark alchemy of the Sith. The Emperor, like Naga Sadow and Exar Kun long before him, became a master of manipulating the genetic building blocks of living creatures through the dark side.

Trained in the alchemical arts of the dark side, Naga Sadow is capable of using arcane formulae and ancient Sith equipment to alter the molecular composition of living beings, allowing him to create mutants. He is also capable of reshaping inanimate matter, allowing him to make his weapons and armor sharper and stronger:

A skilled alchemist, Naga Sadow uses Alchemy to twist Massassi warriors into enhanced, dark-side wielding mutants:

Sadow, a skilled alchemist, hid his vessel deep underneath the newly built Sith Temple of Fire. Using his Sith magic and alchemy, Sadow created the mutated Massassi warriors from descendents of his Sith crew. These Massassi guarded the new Sith temples they erected. As Sadow passed on, the Massassi continued, developing into a proud tribal culture that used the dark side of the Force to augment their archaic weapons.

These Massassi warriors prove so skilled and powerful that they defeated the team of Barel Ovair and Eison Gynt, both highly gifted swordsmen:

Gynt and Master Ovair fought bravely against the Massassi, but they were defeated and forced to flee deep into the temple.

Sadow not only genetically altered his Massassi warriors, but also created other monstrous creatures, including the massive Sith wyrm:

For decades, Sadow practiced his Sith alchemy undisturbed. He created monstrous creatures, such as the gargantuan Sith wyrm, and twisted his Massassi into primitive, bestial guardians for his dark spirit.

Naga Sadow also created droid sentries to keep guard over his tomb:

Naga Sadow created stone servants to guard his tomb as well:

You have recovered your lightsaber from Naga Sadow’s tomb. However, when you attempted to leave the tomb, Naga Sadow’s stone servants awoke from their slumber.

Sadow possesses numerous Sith artifacts, including instruments used for Sith Alchemy. Exar Kun would later use these to transform his Massassi warriors into even mightier fighters:

Now the master of the Massassi rather than their captive, Exar Kun sought out the ancient relics Naga Sadow brought to Yavin 4 and discovered among theirs the instruments of Sith alchemy. Turning these devices on his now-loyal Massassi subjects, Exar Kun transformed them into mighty warriors, then set out in Naga Sadow's ancient battleship to track down others who Kun sensed had the dark side training to usurp his power.

The Sith disciple also continued the fiendish work of the alchemist Naga Sadow. Using Sadow's ancient apparatus, he began to further mutate the Massassi into armored monsters bred for pure violence.

Sadow is able to use Alchemy to produce weapons and armor that are impervious to all other weapons. He is also able to create poisons that can mind control "even the noblest of beings". He is also, as already revealed, able to create mutant warriors steeped in the dark side and bound to his will:

"As you are already aware, Sith alchemy gives one the power to alter the molecular composition of living beings and reshape inanimate matter. First, you will learn how to construct the equipment required to create such alterations. I will then teach you how to produce weapons and armor that are impervious to all others, and poisons that will convert the noblest of beings to your dark causes. Finally, you will create mutants steeped in the dark side and bound to your will."

Naga Sadow is highly knowledgeable on alchemy and poisons, composing many treatises on them:

Over his lifetime, Sadow wrote many treatises on alchemy and poisons. He later compiled his knowledge into a Holocron, the date within would inspire generations of Sith after him.

Yesterday he had finally completed a rather long and detailed treatise by an ancient Sith Lord named Naga Sadow on the uses of alchemy and poisons.

Sadow's Holocron explores Sith alchemy:

"Holocron of Naga Sadow, which explores the secrets of Sith alchemy"

"Ask me of my heritage, and I shall tell you. Ask me of my ambitions, and you shall know them. Ask me for my hand in battle, and I shall likely lend you both.

But ask me the secrets of Sith alchemy, and I would ask you for three measures of blood: one from a person you love, one from a person you hate, and one from yourself. A triangle do these measures form, and a powerful triangle it is, so long as your own bloodline is strong with dark side energy and not rife with foreign impurities. If your bloodline reveals that you are merely a spy or a pretender to Sith knowledge, may my words reach out to tear your eyes and tongue from your head, and may you drown in your loved one's blood while your enemies look upon your wretched form and laugh.

Because you have not already succumbed to the defenses that guard this record, I will assume you have already prepared a triangle of blood. Now fill the triangle with the sacred words, and brace yourself for death.

You know the sacred words. Welcome, my apprentice. Yes, I shall grant you knowledge despite your imperfections, for you have passed my test, but barely.

As you are already aware, Sith alchemy gives one the power to alter the molecular composition of living beings and reshape inanimate matter. First, you will learn how to construct the equipment required to create such alterations. I will then teach you how to produce weapons and armor that are impervious to all others, and poisons that will convert the noblest of beings to your dark causes. Finally, you will create mutants steeped in the dark side and bound to your will.

Let us begin..."

Captured there by the primitive descendants of Sadow's Massassi warriors, Exar Kun escaped his own execution and seized a dark side amulet from among Sadow's treasures, using it to escape the gargantuan dark side beast that the Massassi brought forth to devour him. He then turned the weapon on Freedon Nadd, destroying the dark side spirit forever.

When Kun destroyed the creature with an ancient Sith amulet, he won the approval of Nadd, the full strength of the dark side, and the worship of the Massassi. Kun set the Massassi to work, expanding the remaining temples.

Mere minor amulets, can, when destroyed, kill all life in a ten-meter circle around them, as well as form protective shields, sharpen battle focus, energize weakened muscles, or knit injured flesh. Sadow's amulet is clearly a "great amulet", meaning it can not only do all of the above, but also cause insanity in those too weak to resist it:

Minor amulets can create protective shields, knit injured flesh, sharpen battle focus, or energize weakened muscles. However, great amulets are priceless and often unique. users must first overcome the amulet's seductive song. For if they can't, they will be forever lose to dark side insanity. I have acquired many of these prizes for myself, but I remain restless knowing that many more lie locked in the tombs of Korriban.

Sadow possesses numerous other Sith artifacts, including instruments used for Sith Alchemy.

Sadow cast a spell on his holocron to guard it, causing all inadequately powerful or "pretender" Sith of impure blood reading the record to have their eyes and tongue torn out:

"If your bloodline reveals that you are merely a spy or a pretender to Sith knowledge, may my words reach out to tear your eyes and tongue from your head, and may you drown in your loved one's blood while your enemies look upon your wretched form and laugh.

Because you have not already succumbed to the defenses that guard this record, I will assume you have already prepared a triangle of blood."

Sadow's holocron is one of the most notable relics of Old Republic Sith history:

Sadow's spirit unleashes a burst of dark side power that, upon touching the player character, both knocks them back and leaves an echo of that power within them. This echo of power proves to be a necessary in order to harm the Ancient Threat:

Naga Sadow enchanted a talisman with Sith Sorcery such that those who touched it immediately suffered extensive migraines (likely causing insanity to those too weak to resist it) and were then flung into the air. As the player character who touches the talisman can be Darth Nox, this is a remarkably impressive feat:

Stasis

Stasis is a Force power enabling a Force user to place himself or another in suspended animation.

Sadow uses a combination of Sith technology and sorcery in order to place himself in suspended animation:

Naga Sadow escaped destruction, however. He went into hiding on the jungle moon of Yavin, where his loyal Massassi built great temples in his honor. Sadow used Sith technology and sorcery to place himself in suspended animation. Someday he would usher in a new Sith golden age, just as Dark Lord Marka Ragnos had foretold.

Sadow was even powerful enough to stave off the inevitable. He placed himself in a near-death slumber, which he remained in for hundreds of years, waiting until someone would come to take his place….

Pyrokinesis

Pyrokinesis is a Force power enabling a Force user to manipulate fire.

Naga Sadow uses his own powers to generate huge solar flares from the binary star of Denarii Nova, consuming Republic ships and destroying the Star System:

Naga Sadow took his most faithful followers and made a second getaway in his damaged flagship, sacrificing the rest of his forces. Republic ships again pursued him, but Sadow made one last sorcerous gambit. He flew his warship between a tight binary star, the Denarii Nova, and used Sith powers to manipulate solar flares that destroyed the Republic ships in his wake.

Lightning

Force Lightning is the ability to unleash deadly crackles of electrical energy that cause excruciating pain and weaken life.

Sadow is able to unleash his hatred as "crackling bolts of energy", which is likely Force Lightning:

Through their focus on these elements of the Force, the Sith have developed terrifying powers, such as the ability to drain a being of its life force, or unleash their hatred as crackling bolts of energy. The Sith Emperor, history's most powerful dark side master, performed a ritual of incredible scope to consume the life energy of every being on his homeworld. Ancient Sith were also masters of these arts - Lord Naga Sadow was able to affect the stars themselves, and caused the red supergiant Primus Goluud to go nova.

Drain

Force Drain is a Force power enabling one to siphon the life energies and Force energies of the target(s).

Naga Sadow knows Force Drain:

[Naga Sadow is] able to draw life energy from living beings, gradually absorbing it [himself].

Source: The Dark Side Sourcebook

As a member of the ancient Sith, Sadow mastered the ability to drain a being of its life force. It is additionally implied that Sadow knew a ritual similar to the one the Sith Emperor used to devastate Nathema:

Exar Kun's famed ritual where he drained the life forces of his Massassi warriors in order to ascend to a higher plane of existence, was, in fact, one of Sadow's ancient techniques:

There, where he first won their loyalty by slaying the wyrm, Kun used Sadow's ancient techniques and the life energy of every Massassi to leave his body and become one with the dark side. In the end, the Massassi died exactly as they lived, in absolute and unquestioning service to evil.

Healing is a Force technique involving the acceleration of bodily regeneration and the mending of wounds.

Sadow can mend wounds to heal himself and others:

Force Ghost

Force Ghost is an esoteric technique allowing one to maintain their identity and consciousness in the afterlife in the form of a spirit, which allows them to influence the material world without being a physical entity.

Naga Sadow's spirit survives after his physical death, to pass Sith teachings onto Freedon Nadd:

Naga Sadow’s spirit, however, survived to pass on Sith teachings, planting the seed of corruption among his Jedi enemies.

Source: The Old Republic: Codex Entry: Tomb of Naga Sadow

After a brief struggle with the primitive Massassi guarding the area, Nadd discovered the focusing chamber of the primary temple. After awakening the spirit of Naga Sadow, he asked the Dark Lord to teach him his sorcerous ways. Sadow showed him the dark side of the Force and taught him skills the other Jedi Knights had not seen in centuries. With these new powers and weapons, Nadd left Yavin 4 and traveled to the primi-tive planet of Onderon.

Essence Transfer

Essence Transfer is a Force power enabling one to manipulate his essence or those of others, and transfer it into another body.

Sadow's spirit possesses Eison Gynt:

While possessing Eison Gynt's body, Naga Sadow attacks Barel Ovair in an intense duel, challenging the latter. Ultimately, Sadow loses, but this is likely because of his inexperience with lightsabers, which he was wielding, and inexperience with or against double-bladed lightsabers in particular, which he was facing. In addition to this, he was out of practice for over a thousand years, and by sources, this is implicitly only a fraction of him, not his essence in its entirety:

Naga Sadow is among the ancient Sith Lords, whom Kreia claims are vastly superior swordfighters to the Jedi and Sith of her age. Specifically, she claimed that the Exile (at the time, at least) and herself were "children playing with toys compared to the prowess of the old masters".

"If you were to face an ancient Sith Lord in combat, you would learn that we are as children playing with toys compared to the prowess of the old masters."

Source: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

Chris Avellone, the head writer of Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, has confirmed that Kreia's predictions are accurate:

"Kreia is setting the stage for what we imagined KOTOR3 to be, and as we had a sense for the power that we wanted those Sith Lords to reveal, her predictions are accurate. And yes, she had a number of Sith holocrons that she had read (the ones on Telos)."

Sith Marauders of Vitiate's Sith Empire follow the teachings of Naga Sadow, highlighting the fact that his skills as a swordfighter were renowned, even millennia after his death. Additionally, this suggests that Naga Sadow was capable of dual-wielding and using Jar'Kai fighting techniques:

Entrusted with the task of destroying the Empire’s enemies, the dual-wielding Marauder embodies the teachings of Naga Sadow. Never hesitating, never faltering, there is no swifter bringer of pain in the galaxy.

Sadow mastered a fighting style where he intuited his foes' weak points and then struck such points with great precision for devastating effect:

Naga Sadow was purportedly capable of defeating an entire army of intelligent Massassi, who had, in turn, defeated waves upon waves of alchemically-enhanced Massassi brutes, each wave being capable of taking down an army:

The first Massassi warriors to arrive on the fourth moon of Yavin were intelligent beings. However, their utter devotion to Dark Lord of the Sith Naga Sadow rendered moot their capacity for independent thought. To Sadow, the Massassi were born and bred to build temples in his honor and to defend him until death; nothing more. Perhaps it was for this reason that Sadow's experiments in Sith alchemy mutated his followers into rudimentary brutes. Not all Massassi on Yavin 4 were subjected to Sadow's alchemical manipulations, however. A tribe of clerics who preferred independence over mindless labor turned their backs on their master, quietly venturing out to make a home of their own. These Massassi were pioneers, masters of their own destinies. But if Sadow were to discover their betrayal, there would come a reckoning....

As a small tribe of cultured warriors, the intelligent Massassi thrived in the harsh jungles of Yavin 4. For a time they were content with their lives, but contentment led to restlessness. They longed for more. The uncontested rule and grand temples of Naga Sadow called to their warrior's vanity. A plan emerged and the tribe marched on Sadow's territory. But Sadow, having learned of their independent existence, had anticipated their aggression. His mutated brutes ambushed the would-be usurpers. The sheer magnitude of their blunt-force attack was enough to take down an army. Relying on their wit to improvise and strategize, the smarter Massassi not only protected themselves from the onslaught, but advanced on their goal. For days, the tribe stormed the temples their devolved cousins built. But where was the Dark Lord they had built them for? They had expected Naga Sadow would face them; they'd even accepted the likelihood most or all would fall to their former master. Instead, wave after wave of mutated brutes attacked and succumbed until there were none left to fight and the tribe stood triumphant inside the greatest of Sadow's temples. It was then, at long last, that Naga Sadow appeared....

"You have succeeded," Sadow declared. "You have defied the odds, killed many times more your own, taken all you so desperately coveted. You have fought and bled and sacrificed to arrive at this moment. All that remains is for you to strike me down. But once you have, what would you do then, without your brothers to murder? With nothing left to conquer on this orb?" The Massassi slackened, unable to offer a response. There was none to give. "I commend you on the mass slaughter of your own kind," Sadow intoned as hundreds of Massassi brutes flooded into the temple chamber. "You have seen the pinnacle of your days, the extent of your unchecked avarice. Think of it as the first of two gifts. The other I bestow on you now, though you were meant to have received it along with your fellow Massassi." Over time, the Massassi on Yavin 4 grew in number as they rebuilt that which they destroyed. They would never war amongst themselves again.

Tactical Skill

Naga Sadow is a cunning strategist:

The Sith Lord Naga Sadow was a powerful sorcerer and a cunning strategist, who lived on Korriban before the rise of the Emperor more than a thousand years ago.

Source: The Old Republic: Encyclopedia

Naga Sadow is a superior strategist than Ludo Kressh, allowing him to kill Ludo Kressh and destroy his flagship, despite being ambushed and having a badly damaged fleet:

When Sadow's badly damaged battle fleet returned, Kressh was waiting. His ships devastated Sadow's ships, but Sadow was the better strategist. Sadow ordered one of his own damaged ships to ram Kressh's new flagship. Both ships were destroyed, along with Ludo Kressh's dreams of ruling the Sith Empire.
