Thief Of Thieves 0

Thief Of Thieves is the new series from Image Comics Skybound imprint. The story is by Robert Kirkman and Nick Spencer is credited as the writer. Seeing these two gentlemen's names attached to a series immediately caught my eye. Upon hearing the premise I knew I had to pick this up and give it a shot. This may be the year of Image Comics as they have a great lineup of new titles coming out this year, this being one of many. The story is very fast paced as the setting shifts from present to past ...

What Happened To The Story? 1

I was curious to see how this months issue of Batwoman would fair without J.H. Williams III handling the artwork as well as the direction the series would be heading. Surprisingly my issues with this issue were pertaining to the story and not the art. I'm really not sure what the writers were hoping to achieve with this issue because by the time you're finished with it, you feel like you've gone nowhere. The issue opens up with Batwoman fighting a man with a hook arm that lasts for three pages. ...

Shoot To Thrill 1

Last months issue of Batman And Robin ended on one of the better cliffhangers I've stumbled across in a comic lately. What made it so great was that you could picture the scenario going either way. Writer Peter Tomasi gave fans something to consider for a whole month. No time is wasted at all as we quickly find out whether Damian pulls the trigger or opts not to. Without ruining what happened, I will say I enjoyed the way the events unfolded. Tomasi handles everything in this issue superbly. The...

The Suspense Builds 0

2012 kicked off in a great way for Image Comics and comic fans as the debut of Fatale hit stores. It's the brand new creator owned series from the dynamic creative team of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. In this second issue we get a few more hints and clues towards the supernatural elements that are involved in this series. While no direct and explicit answers are flat out given, Brubaker does make readers known there is an item in the possession of Booker that is of high value to Josephine. Whe...

Too Predictable 0

Teen Titans was a series that started off with a lot of promise and quickly caught my interest. Unfortunately these last two issues have felt like a step backwards for me. I'm beginning to lose the interest I once had. It's not as if this series has simply gotten awful, it just doesn't have that special x-factor that makes it stand out. Nothing really pulls you in and demands your immediate attention. Right now it's simply meandering along with a rather dull storyline I find myself not really ca...

The Omega Effect 0

Geoff Johns and Jim Lee have been delivering a new origin story arc for the Justice League set five years in the past. All six heroes have come face to face now and have also witnessed Darkseid arrive and make his presence known. The issue opens up with Flash and Superman trying to outrun Darkseid's Omega beams. Superman is hit by the blast and looks as if he is being taken away to Apokolips. After Superman is taken captive, Green Lantern rages an all out war against Darkseid. His attempts prove...

Tell Me All The Horrors That You See 1

The Dark Knight has been a series that has received an excessive amount of criticism, most of which has been aimed at David Finch. Being another artist turned writer, he's been scrutinized for his development on this series in which he's credited as co-plotter with Paul Jenkins. My only minor complaint with the series has been the pacing and plot development. Where is the series going? This issue yet again reveals nothing about what lies ahead.  The pacing and plot of this issue were very poorly...

"A" Is For Atlantis 0

With the conclusion of The Trench story arc last issue, the beginning of the new Atlantis story arc kicks off as Aquaman finds himself Lost in the desert. I like the way the story transitioned from the first arc to the second one as Aquaman receives a phone call from a Navy Commander who informs him they found some artifact embedded in the wall the cocoons were attached to. Aquaman meets up with the Navy officer and examines the artifact which he claims is Atlantean. Suddenly they're attacked by...

The Run Begins 2

Runaways was a series created by Brian K. Vaughan back in 2003. This trade collects the first six issues of the series where a group of teenage kids find out that their parents are part of an evil crime organization that runs Los Angeles called The Pride. After witnessing their parents murder a young girl, these kids ban together and vow to bring their parents to justice. Following a trail clues and suspicion, the Runaways find out more about their parents secret lives and come across some usefu...

Justice Takes Its Course 0

The Huntress continues her mission in Italy to bring down crime boss Moretti who is actively involved in trafficking women. This is the fourth of six planned issues that are written by Paul Levitz and drawn by Marcus To. I wasn't crazy about the pacing this issue. It was a little slow until the end. There was some scouting with Huntress and her reporter friends that was a little boring.  Once Huntress puts her plan into motion and boards the boat Moretti is on, things definitely heat up. I enjoy...

Lord Of The Jungle 0

Lord Of The Jungle is a new series published by Dynamite Entertainment that promises to retell the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs story while expanding on it at the same time. I decided to pick up the first issue basically because they were only charging $1.00 and the covers caught my eye. No harm taking a chance for a price like that. The story is written by Arvid Nelson, a writer I'm not familiar with offhand. It's very fast paced as Jonh Clayton and Alice's story unfolds. They're stranded on an...

Getting Off Track 0

Nightwing was a series that started off with such promise as the story surrounded the secret of Haly's Circus which had me on the edge of my seat. I feel like writer Kyle Higgins is sort of losing focus as of late as he's been getting off track of where I thought the story was heading. He's taking time out to incorporate some lackluster side stories when all readers really care about is the big mystery about the circus which has yet to be revealed.  This story just felt out of place. Why Higgins...

Can't Catch A Break 0

Writer Judd Winick continues his fast-paced run on Catwoman where an impulsive Selina continues to find herself in over her head and barely making it out of these situations alive and in once piece.  After being thrown half a mile into the air at the end of last months issue, Catwoman scrambles to think of a way out of her predicament. After barely surviving and sustaining serious injuries (dislocated shoulder), Catwoman somehow manages to overpower and defeat Reach with minimal effort. After pu...

You Can't Trick Me! I Invented All The Tricks! 0

It's my favorite week of the month which can only mean one thing; a new issue of Batman came out this week. Once again Scott Snyder has managed to deliver an enticing issue that keeps you on the edge of your seat.  I admit I was a little skeptical about possibility this issue may not live up to the expectations I have for this series. The cliffhanger last issue was a little weird; Batman falling into a labyrinth. I was wondering for an entire month how Snyder would play this out. He didn't disap...

Honor Among Thieves 0

This trade is comprised of two short story arcs of the JSA Classified series, the first of which is written by Jen Van Meter. The central focus is on the reformation of the Injustice Society and they're attempt to break into JSA headquarters and steal the Cosmic Key. While the premise sounds promising, unfortunately the story fails to draw you in enough to procure any excitement or enjoyment out of you. It's not bad but it's not one of those stories that after you finish you say, "wow…that was p...

Pipeline Of Crime 1

From the pages of Detective Comics, this trade is comprised of the back-up stories told in that series involving Renee Montoya; The Question. Greg Rucka was known for his work with the character of Renee Montoya during not only the DC event 52, but The Question: The Five Books Of Blood as well as Final Crisis: Revelations. Even with those prominent appearances, I sort of feel as if Rucka's work on the transformation of Renee Montoya to The Question has sort of went under-appreciated. Her storyli...

Do You Believe In Magic? 0

DC Comics finally gave Zatanna her own on-going series. While the series only lasted for 16 issues (due to DC's New 52 reboot) this first trade that collects the first six issues of the series, is a very enjoyable read that should please all Zatanna fans. Writer Paul Dini wastes no time in getting things rolling -- early on Zatanna is escorted by detective Dale Colton to a very bizarre and gruesome crime scene where some form of supernaturalism took place. Humans had been both transformed and di...

A Death In The House Of El 0

The second volume of this Superman event New Krypton certainly gets things moving as we get a better understanding of where this story is heading. The triple threat writing team of Geoff Johns, James Robinson and Sterling Gates string together a One of the standout moments during this installment was the "Death In The House Of El" issue where the story takes a drastic turn. As you can tell from the title, there's a death that occurs which impacted two different Kryptonians in two very substantia...

The Fight Starts Now 0

Orchid is a story set in a dystopian future and is unlike anything I've ever had the pleasure of reading. This series has surprised me in so many ways. I hadn't anticipated I would be enjoying it as much as I am. I feel like it's an underrated series that's not getting the recognition it should. I'm loving what Tom Morello's doing and hope it lasts for a long time.  In this issue, the ruler of Fortress Penuel is upset his men haven't retrieved the legendary mask of General China. This causes him...

Merciless Wrath 1

Last month I purchased the first issue of Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist and instantly became a fan. I had no prior experience with Flash Gordon at all. I had heard of him, but never got around to reading any of the comics. I was definitely satisfied with my purchase and looked forward to the second issue to see how this adventure played out as Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov found themselves crash-landing on the planet Mongo, a planet ruled by Ming The Merciless.  Writer Eric Trautmann wasted ...

A Slow Start 0

Barbara Gordon's life has been a roller coaster ride as of late -- defeating the villain The Mirror and then receiving an unexpected visit from her mother.  The plot of the story is somewhat bizarre and unclear. A certain sense of mystery is intentional but Gail SImone leaves readers with far more questions than answers. Throughout the course of the issue we're witness to several people say "338" over and over again. I'm not even sure what to think of this. We were shown a building with the numb...

Treachery! 0

Demon Knights is a series that I feel is extremely underrated. There's so much potential just waiting to be untapped by writer Paul Cornell who up to this point, has done a fairly solid job with this unorthodox cast of characters the series is comprised of. While the story itself seems to jump around all over the place at times (which I think turns some readers off) the series has never failed to be a lot of fun. If you like to have fun while reading comics then this series is for you. Set in me...

I'm...Drowning...In This Awesome Series!! 3

Issue five has arrived and is the finale of the first story arc which pit Batwoman against the Weeping Woman who was abducting children. The issue opens with Batwoman hot on the trail of her. Their confrontation was a little peculiar, but in a good way. The illustrations during this part were breathtaking. I liked the way things ended between the two. It gave closure while setting up the next story. If you've been following this series then you know Flamebird revealed Batwoman's secret identity....

The Lie Is Over 2

Peter J. Tomasi really turned things up last issue on this series. You could feel the tension beginning to mount between Bruce and Damian. There to take advantage and tear them apart was none other than the new villain Nobody, the son of Henri Ducard. Tomasi puts a lot of time and focus on Damian this issue as Nobody continues to try and warp his mind, bending it to his will in his attempt to turn Damian against his father.  From the opening page of the issue, we find that Damian has abandoned h...

A Game-Changing Story Arc 0

The Grim Hunt had been building in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man for quite some time. We all knew a plan was set into motion by Sasha Kravinoff, the wife of Kraven The Hunter which was meant to weaken Spider-Man in order to achieve her ultimate goal which was revealed in this book.  I was really impressed with the storytelling of Joe Kelly who incorporated a lot of the spider mythology into the story. Other characters like Kaine, Arachne, Arana, Mattie Franklin, Madame Web and Ezekiel all play...

The Gauntlet Concludes 0

The Gauntlet was a Spider-Man event that was meant to ware him down by bringing back his old enemies to face him. The plan was orchestrated by Kraven The Hunter's wife and daughter in a plot to take revenge against the web-slinger. While the idea sounded really cool initially, I can't help but shake the feeling this event dragged on a little too long and may have possibly missed it's goal. Some of it was pretty cool but often times  This final installment of the Gauntlet features the return of t...

Mine! Mine! Mine! 0

The Blackest Night is fast approaching and writer Geoff Johns shakes things up yet again with the introduction of Agent Orange. The character of Larfleeze is introduced and he instantly strikes you as a ferocious opponent not to be taken lightly. I have to commend Geoff Johns for his ability at consistently creating new characters and introducing them to this vast world he's rebuilt over the past few years and redefined. It seems there's no limit to his imagination. Larfleeze's backstory was equ...

The Blackest Night Is Coming 0

I've really come to admire Peter J. Tomasi as a writer, especially his work on Green Lantern Corps. Ever since he took over as writer of this series I've become a bigger fan of the series every time I read an issue. He's really crafting a compelling space opera that has me on the edge of my seat every time. This book has everything you'd want in it -- a thrilling story filled with drama, romance and action. One of my favorite moments during this story was the development of Kyle Rayner and Soran...

Penguin Strikes 0

This five issue mini-series has been a surprisingly enjoyable read so far. Writer Gregg Hurwitz has been doing a great job writing Penguin's character as he's been intertwining flashbacks of his childhood in with the present storyline taking place. I feel as if I've come to know Penguin better after reading these first four issues so far. I've gained new respect for his character that has to be contributed to Gregg Hurwitz.  In this fourth issue, no flashbacks of Penguin's childhood occur. Inste...

A Lackluster Finish 0

Justice League International is a series that's suppose to be about a superhero team tackling larger than life or end of the world type of scenarios. In a sense it's suppose to be epic, yet it falls quite short of achieving that.  With the end of the world fast approaching, the members of the JLI are currently trapped within an inferno. Eventually they escape and then must decide how to take on Peraxxus. While reading this you just don't feel the sense of urgency from any of these characters. Th...

Death Chases Her 1

Fatale is the new series from the creative team of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips who brought you series such as Sleeper, Criminal and Incognito. This is just the first of many promising series distributed from Image Comics that are coming out this year. Upon hearing the premise of this series, I was instantly attracted to this title.  This was a perfectly written and executed first issue of the series. Ed Brubaker immediately pulls you in to this story and never lets you go. I love his style of ...

Kandor Restored 0

The Story: After an epic battle with Brianiac, Superman has restored the city of Kandor on Earth. It doesn't take long for tension to spark between humans and Kryptonians. My Thoughts:This is the beginning of the huge Superman event New Krypton I had been looking forward to reading. The first trade overall, wasn't as enticing as I would have hoped. It got off to a pretty slow and mundane start, but eventually picked up quite a bit during the last half of the story.  The first half focuses on Jim...

Vengeance Isn't Justice 3

The Story: A new Justice League is formed who plan of striking down evil before it has the opportunity to act. My Thoughts:I have to begin by saying I do not understand, at all, how this book has received so much negative criticism. This was a great all around read that deals with realistic topics and realities so many writers in the business either shy away from, or refuse to touch base on for whatever various reasons. It's unfortunate this book doesn't receive the appreciation it deserves. Jam...

Could This Be Anymore Disappointing? 2

This has to be one of the most disappointing series to come from DC's new 52 initiative. Superman being one of my favorite characters and arguably the most popular comic character ever conceived, you expect his series to be great. Those expectations haven't been reached. Not only have they not been reached, they haven't even come remotely close to being reached. George Perez is just flat out ruining one of my favorite characters. He really makes me not want to read Superman. This isn't the 70's ...

Great Art, Bad Writing 1

The Story: Central City remains in the dark after the recent EMP blast and Iris West is locked is Iron Heights prison trying to find a way out. Flash wakes up and does nothing. My Thoughts:Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato continue to make their attempt at writing a comic series as well as drawing it. I haven't been crazy about their storytelling abilities thus far. I feel like they lack the experience in that department and have wholeheartedly failed up to this point at creating a compelling...

Showdown In Times Square 0

The Story: Wonder Girl fights Superboy in Times Square while the rest of the team gets aquatinted with Kid Flash and Solstice for the first time. My Thoughts:At the end of the last issue we were promised a confrontation with Superboy this issue. The story begins in Times Square where Cassie is being followed by Superboy. The two eventually begin to throw down with each other. The plot gaps didn't go unnoticed by me. Why was Cassie in New York and how did she get there? There was no mention of he...

Hope Springs Eternal 0

The Story: Batman continues his investigation and his race to find a cure to the toxin Flash and himself were exposed to.  My Thoughts:David Finch and Paul Jenkins have quietly been molding an under-appreciated Batman series that seems to be a little misunderstood. I think a lot of people feel this series revolves and relies on shock value. Either that or they feel all these Batman villains are being forced into the story. In my opinion they don't feel forced. I think many of them are pawns in a...

Into The Depths Of The Trench 0

The Story: Aquaman and Mera head into The Trench to rescue the captured citizens and resolve this threat permanently. My Thoughts:I always look forward to the last week of the month. I like to call it Aquaman week as it's my most anticipated issue and the one I always read first. It's a nice way to end a month of comics and so far I haven't been disappointed one time by this series.  This issue is the conclusion of The Trench story arc which takes Aquaman and Mera into the depths of The Trench. ...

X-Factor Hit Las Vegas 1

The Story: The X-Factor hit the Las Vegas strip to track down a troll captured by Hela, the goddess of death who initially enlisted the X-Factor to track down an item she claimed was stolen from her. My Thoughts:This series just keeps getting better! Peter David's storytelling skills really flourish in this story arc where he has multiple plot lines unfolding, each as compelling as the next. The pacing is pretty fast as things are always moving forward with plenty of shocking twists along the wa...

Their Biggest Case Yet 2

The Story: Valeria and Franklin Richards enlist the X-Factor's help finding their mother who has mysteriously vanished. My Thoughts:Peter David continues his epic run on X-Factor by presenting them with what could possibly be their biggest case yet. I was really impressed with Peter David's writing on this book as he not only weaved t...
