Image Comics: A fan's opinion.

Hey guys so this is my first blog on this site and its going to be about Image comics.

Overview:

Image comics was founded in 1992 when a select group of really cool and great artists and writers left Marvel comics to found their own publishing brand. The point of the this new company was to establish another amazing venue for creativity and freedom in comics. When most writers for DC or Marvel write amazing story arcs and character development sometimes over years these writers and collaborators still do not own the characters and have no copyright ownership to the characters. Image was founded so that creativity and expression to create all genres and have the titles and characters be owned by the creators. Image has been hugely successful and now publishes works of every genre out there. On another note it is the third largest publisher behind DC and Marvel and is the largest creator owned publisher in North America. The founders of Image are Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri, and Jim Valentino.

Opinion:

So after hearing all that which many of you may know...what do we think of Image? I for one adore Image comics. This isnt going to be me just loving and drooling over everything Image related. I am not totally Image biased. I like many titles they put out, love a few and dont care for a few. I also read many DC comics and Marvel titles as well. I regularly read Batman titles, X-men and X-force, Wolverine, Punisher, and i regularly read Marvel crossover events: Civil War, Secret Invasion, Siege, Fear Itself ect. I also currently read about 6 titles in DC's the new 52. That being said i still read more Image and have more fun in general exploring the worlds in Image comic titles. Why is that? It's not just being different for the sake of being different. And its not for a shear sake of supporting "indie" comics. Its the enjoyment, excitement, and the phenomenal diversity you can get while reading the different titles they have.

Lets look at the classic title "Witchblade". This is a great book written by Marc Silvestri that if you havn't already checked out get to it! It combines fantasy and a crime drama aspect to create this gritty but also aesthetically pleasing setting and characters. Sarah Pezzini is a detective that gets a sentient magical ancient artifact that bonds to her in a symbiotic relationship and she will fight stuff with it. Boom. Or "Invincible" written by the much acclaimed Robert Kirkman. A teenage son of a superhero needs to take over his fathers job and has to kick ass while battling hormones, villains and general crazyness. "Hack/Slash" written by Tim Seeley is about young woman who while she was in grade school had a serial killer mother, and was terrorized by her violent life. She hunts down your psycho serial killers and kills them with crowbars or knives. These are just a few excellent titles Image puts out, even more popular ones are the "Walking Dead" and "Spawn". All these great titles have not just survived, but flourished despite the huge money and name recognition of a Marvel or DC behind them. Image titles have even transferred to film and television and done well in those mediums as well. And dont even get me started on how awesome Savage Dragon is...(the real comic book created by Erik Larson not my user name) So in-conclusion i just wanna say that Image has the best diversity out of any publisher and has equally tremendous and talented artists and writers working hard to make comics that are badass. Image Comics slogan is "Independent, Then, Now and Forever." Lets hope this remains true, always.

Ps. CHECK OUT Elephantmen written by Richard Starkings its really really good!
