Sam sat on her bed, still rather perturbed about what she was going through. She rarely wore makeup, and even when she did, it was little more than some eye liner, shadow, and lipstick. Now she was getting the full treatment. With each pat of the flesh colored makeup on her face, every single loose dust particle and stray bit of cream seemed to find it’s way into her mouth, nose, or eyes, causing her face to have the feeling of burning all over.

“Done?” she asked Isa in an aggravated tone.

“Hm......” Isa’s face had a pitying look on it. “Hate to break it to ya Sam, but you’re terrible with makeup. Hold Still, I’ll help you out”

“Sorry. I’m just..... inexperienced I guess” Isa smiled a helpful smile and took the makeup out of Sam’s hand, and she began to add blush to give a more flesh like appearance. Next came a tube of cherry red lipstick. Isa did her best to find where Sam puckered her invisible lips. She ran her finger across her friends face until she felt a change in texture, and from there, she continued with the application of the makeup.

“There. Now put the sunglasses back on.” Sam immediately got up from her sitting position on her bed and walked to a drawer, the sunglasses Isa had given her in her hand. In the drawer, there were over a dozen pairs of sunglasses ranging from brands made specifically for girls to Aviators. Sam picked up the first pair she saw and began to put them on, but before she could bring them to her eyes, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror.

She looked rather odd to say the least. The flesh colored makeup colored her entire face except her eyes, leaving what appeared to be two gaping holes going all the way to the back of the room.

“Are you going to put the glasses on or just stare at me the whole time?” Isa asked with a smile.

“First of all,” Sam began, “I was looking at myself and secondly, I have a much better looking pair of sunglasses in here.” The truth was, Sam didn’t have a particularly good looking pair, as she rarely wore them anyway. She just wanted an excuse to get closer to the mirror without being too obvious and blatantly questioning the cosmetic prowess of her best friend.

“These will do just fine,” she said as she handed Isa back her sunglasses and put on a pair of her own Aviators. They completely covered the two “holes” she had for eyes, making her at least look..... human, and not like the Invisible Woman. The makeup was a little darker than her pale skin normally was, but it would have to do. After all, she didn’t plan on getting to close to anyone in the condition she was in. Content with her appearance, she sat back down on her bed next to Isa. The notes that Isa had taken from James were just sitting on the bed and staring back up at her. Sam couldn’t help but feel as if she was going to be sick, knowing that she could possibly turn into a chameleon, but through it all, she picked up the paper and began reading it.

“Isa....... this is really, really gross. Clawed hands and feet? Scaly skin? A tongue longer than my body? I don’t want this to happen to me! I want to stay Sam, not turn into some reptilian freak!”

“Relax Sam.” Isa said quietly while trying to console her friend. “This is just a guess to figure out why you’re having to walk around naked or tons of makeup on.” Sam managed to chuckle through all her anxiety. “Look, this probably won’t even happen. I wouldn’t have brought it up if I had known it would cause this. I’m sorry.” Isa could see a smile form around the lipstick covered mouth of her camouflaged friend.

“Did James say anything about a time limit?” Sam was anxious to know whether she would be visible soon or, even better, it was something she had total control over.

“No.... he didn’t. Which makes me believe that there is a way out of this. Most chameleons choose which color they can be. Some say it’s based on their environment, others their moods.” Isa could see that talking about it was helping Sam calm back down, and the calmer she was, the easier Isa thought it would be for her to control herself and change back.

“I don’t know about moods. They’ve been pretty sporadic all day today. I mean, I’ve been shocked, scared, relieved, relaxed, and...... did I say scared?” The two girls smiled. It was the first time they had had a real chance to sit down and think about what was going on. Whatever happened, the two knew they would stick it out together as friends.

“Sam?”

“Yeah Isa?”

“You know, I think wall crawling and long sticky tongues is....... kinda cool. Think of the pranks you could pull off. Putting something up high in an important place where no one can reach it or even....” Isa suddenly got very quiet. “Covert missions to the boys locker room.”

What started out as a small chuckle deep in Sam’s throat slowly grew and grew until it became an uncontrollable, hysterical laugh. Sam flew back on her blue comforter and lied there, laughing until it hurt. About a minute passed and after many unsuccessful attempts to speak, Sam finally managed to get a sentence out.”“Thanks---- I needed ---that.”

“You ready to go?” Isa said while standing up off the bed, the keys to Sam’s truck jingling melodically in her hand. Sam nodded her head and through the hood on her Rise Against jacket over her head, covering her hair and ears. Next, she put her hands in her pockets to give the appearance that she at least....... still had them.

As the two moved to the bedroom door, Isa felt queasy, unsettling, and ultimately hot. One look at her severely red flushed face, and Sam could see large beads of sweat slowly dropping down her cheeks. “You okay Isa?” Sam asked as she opened the door into the hallway.

“Fine..... I’m fine. Just a little flustered. I think I might just have a cold. This has happened a couple times this week. Really, I am.” Isa’s voice was a little shaky.

“You might be,” Sam began, “but you’re in no condition to be driving my beautiful red truck.” Sam smiled. For once all day, she actually felt good about her self, a sharp contrast to her friend who’s skin was getting hotter and redder by the minute. “Jaaaaaaaames!” Sam yelled for her brother while trying to make her voice sound as sickly as possible, hoping to hold up the lie Isa had told him. “Tell Mom I’m going over to Isa’s to finish our project. I’ll be staying the night. And don’t let her know I’m sick! I HAVE to work on this. See ya bro!”

The two stood there in the hallway for a few seconds waiting for a confirmation from James. “Okay...... whatever. Feel better Samantha!”

With that, the two bolted down the hallway towards the back door and to the driveway where they both jumped inside of the cherry red F-150. Sam shoved the keys into the ignition and turned, and the truck started with a low roar. Maybe they would be able to buy more time at Elisa’s house, or maybe things would just turn out worse, but it was a chance they were willing to take.

The old librarian eyed Isa oddly as she set the huge stack of books on the false wood counter. The stack nearly covered her face as she took each book, scanned it, and stamped the due date in the back, all the while, Samantha stood there in nothing but her birthday suit, trying not to make the floor creak under her bare feet. Though she was completely camouflaged into her surroundings, Samantha knew her face must have been red. The thought of being naked in a public place, even while invisible struck her with worry and embarrassment. There were so many things that could go wrong. Someone could bump into her, see the outline of her body and freak out, or worst of all, she could reappear, which would let others not only see her without anything on, but wonder why she just seemed to appear out of thin air!

The clock on the wall read 2:49 as the old librarian stamped the last book. “These are due in two weeks,” she began in an old, quivery voice while looking at Isa through her bifocal glasses. “NO Exceptions!” With a firm slap of the cover down onto the rest of the book, she slid all the magazines, books, and novels over to Samantha who clumsily tried to pick them all up at once.

Samantha began to walk quickly, eager to leave the building, but also wanting to reach the warmth of her truck. Elisa was moving slowly, due to the fact that she now looked as if she were writing a dissertation on herpetology, but Samantha continued heading for the doors at a quick pace until she realized something...... the doors were automatic, but it was too late, and the double wide doors appeared to slide apart for nobody, drawing the eyes of the old librarian and the dozen or so students studying with their books. The thought busted entered Sam’s mind, while all eyes seemed to gaze upon the open doors, but as always, Isa came to the rescue. Looking to the side of her massive pile of books, she bolted out of the doors as fast as she could, sending the sound of crinkling paper throughout the quiet library. The two ran until they reached the cherry red F-150, Samantha getting in the drivers door as a way of not getting anymore more attention from people when it came to “ghostly doors.”

With the rev of an engine, the truck started and Elisa put it into reverse and wildly sped out of the parking lot, hitting the curb as she did so.

“Too... close!” Elisa shouted while turning a corner. Oddly enough however, there was a smile on her face. “Wow..... it’s been awhile since I had that much fun Sam.....”

“I know you can’t see me right now, but just picture me glaring at you,” Samantha replied with a slightly peeved tone. “We almost got busted back there. Do you realize what it would be like if everyone found out I was the “Chameleon Girl” or something like that?”

“Look all I know is, we did what we came for, and we didn’t get caught. You should be happy. Maybe there’s some way we can find out to help your..... condition with these books.” Elisa was optimistic as she weaved in and out of heavy San Diego traffic.

“R.L. Stine?” Sam asked in a condescending manner while holding up the Goosebumps book. “I remember reading this in like...... 4th grade. Besides, the ending was terrible. You find out the kid is an alien, and there is no ghost” Sam sighed as she leaned back in her seat, trying to relax in spite of Elisa’s...... questionable driving habits. “Ugh.... I need to get home, get something to eat, use the bathroom, but most importantly, go somewhere where I can put on some clothes. You wouldn’t believe where this seatbelt is chafing.....”

“We’re almost there Sam. No one is home right?”

“Nope..... we should be clear until at least 6 o’clock. That’s when my parents get home and James should be doing a project at a friend’s house”

“And what do we do at six o’clock..... when your parents arrive, and you’re still...... camouflaged?” Elisa asked as she moved up Samantha’s driveway and put the truck in park.

“Sleepover?” Sam asked nonchalantly.

“Sleepover. Wouldn’t bother me anyway. It would be like you weren’t even there.” said Elisa with a wink.

“Very funny.....” Sam grabbed a spare key from under the mat and unlocked the back door while Elisa threw her library books she was carrying on the kitchen table.

 “Now what?” Elisa asked

“Now? Now is food time, then bathroom time, then shower time, then clothes time.” Sam stated in a matter of fact tone, but she couldn’t figure out Elisa had such an odd look on her face. “....um...What’s wrong?”

Elisa moved her black hair back before speaking. “So it’s food, bathroom, shower, THEN clothes.” The only response Sam could give was a shrug of her shoulders. “So you mean after all the complaining about embarrassment, cold, and horrible chafing, you’re still putting on clothes last!?!”

Samantha’s eyes moved to the top of her head as she thought for a moment. “Umm.... yeah.” And with that, she opened the cabinet and took out a cylinder of Pringles, and Elisa watched as the yellow potato chips seemed to float in the air, just before being disappearing in Samantha’s mouth. “Now...... shower time” As the floating potato chips were set down on the counter, Elisa could see the outline of Sam’s body move down the hall.

“Well while you do that, I’m actually going to try and help you Sam!” Elisa yelled down the hall as she sat down and opened the first book simply titled Chameleons. It was a picture book, and a logo on the front stated that it was meant for children “5 and Up”  “Well, I guess I’m ‘up,’ so it seems like a great place to start out,” Elisa said to herself quietly. After a mere three minutes, the book was finished and Isa felt she had learned nothing more than “Chameleons are many colors....”

“Hey Sam!” she yelled down the hall.

“WHAT?” was the reply Elisa heard through the loud sound of the shower.

“Do you think this is it?” Isa yelled again

“WAIT HOLD ON!” Suddenly the sound of the shower stopped, and out of the bathroom door appeared, Samantha with one towel wrapped around her midsection and the other around her head, which of course looked as if they were floating.

“I mean....” Isa began. “What if this isn’t all you can do. What if you can end up doing more than just blending into your surroundings?”

“Like what?” Sam asked, the towel around her head cocked to the side, meaning her head was too.

“Well.... what if you became MORE like a chamel......” Suddenly, she was cut off by what sounded like the unlocking of a door, and as Isa slowly turned her head, she saw the back kitchen door was open, and in the doorway stood Samantha’s brother, James, home early.....

Samantha’s eyes began to water as she stood in the bathroom, staring at what she was. She was nearly invisible to the naked eye, only her clothes were still able to be seen. She had to think quick, but to tell the truth, there wasn’t much she knew to do. She pondered making a break for it, but where would she go? She didn’t even know if this was permanent or just some sort of trick gone awry.

Suddenly, she heard footsteps, followed by the loud crash of the standard heavy school door as it closed. The sound of feet was getting louder and louder, until Samantha was almost positive whoever it was was heading straight for the bathroom, but the fear subsided as a familiar voice echoed through the bathroom. “Dude, Sam, are you alright? You looked like yo....” It was Elisa. Oh no... she can’t, Sam thought quickly, but it was too late, and as Elisa turned the corner into the bathroom, she stopped dead in her tracks, her blue eyes looking like giant marbles against her face.

“Holy... CRAP!” she yelled as she covered her mouth with her hands. “Wha-wha!?”

Samantha couldn’t take it anymore and she bursted out into tears. “I- I don’t know. I- I had a stomach ache, so I came in hear to s-see wha- what was wrong and- and..... this.” With an invisible hand, Samantha wiped her teary eyes, wondering what the astonished Elisa would do. “Please..... It’s me Isa... please...”

Reluctantly, Elisa moved into the bathroom. Her wide eyes had turned into a squint in an attempt to make sure she was seeing what she thought she was looking at. With a few more steps, she reached out a hand and placed it where she thought Sam’s would be, and as she got closer, the two embraced each other in a hug. “I’m.... I’m scared Isa.”

“We’ll figure something out Sam..... I promise. Just tell me what happened exactly.”

The two girls let go of each other and took a seat on a pair of chairs in the corner. “I told you everything Isa..... this..... just happened. I don’t know why,” Sam said with anxiety in her voice.

“We’ll figure something out.” Elisa said with a sigh

“You already said that. Just face it. We won’t figure something out. Just sell me off to the circus now.” Samantha’s fear was fading away, but it was soon being replaced by a sense of hopelessness. “ISA?”

“Wha- huh..... sorry just..... looking at you.”

“Looking at what!? Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m not totally ‘there’ right now!”

“Well..... you actually are,” Elisa began. “You can be touched, you can feel, and most importantly,” A huge smile came over her face “You aren’t INVISIBLE”

“Come again?” Samantha was confused, and began to wonder if Elisa’s recent fevers had gotten to her head.

“Nooo Sam. You aren’t. Here let me prove it to you. Stand in front of the mirror.” Out of pure curiosity, Samantha did what Elisa told her. “Now look really closely at yourself. You can see the outline of your body! Now go over and stand against the wall.” Once again, Sam did what she was told. “You see! I can’t see right through you. Your face makes the wall curve around. You’re not invisible, you’re just camouflaged, like a CHAMELEON!”

“Isa..... I don’t see how this hel....”

“Don’t you get it?” Elisa began, her smile bigger than ever. “If you’re just like a chameleon, you can change back!”

The sudden realization of it took hold, and Samantha once again had hope in her heart, and she threw her arms around Elisa until she couldn’t hug her anymore. “But..... what are we going to do? Won’t people notice a whole bunch of floating clothes walking around?” A sly grin came over Isa’s face. “WHAT? NO WAY! In the middle of winter?”

“It’s the only way Sam.....”

“Fine, but if we’re in a public place and I turn back to normal, you’re dead.” With that, Samantha proceeded to strip down..... naked. When it was all said and done, she handed her clothes to Elisa, who was trying to stifle her giggling. “Fine, are you happy? I’m completely camouflaged now. Can we please go? The keys to my truck are in my jeans. You’re driving. I don’t think we want to get caught with the invisible woman behind the wheel.

This is a fan-fic for Cham (Samantha Brown) and feral Nova, detailing the lives of two teenagers who deal with some unexpected........ issues in their life. The first few posts may look familiar as they are taken from our characters in CVH: Dawn of a New Era. The two of us liked the RPG so much, we decided to continue the story of Sam and Elisa :D

********************
The fiercely annoying screech of the alarm clock went off as Samantha lied in her bed, dressed in her night clothes, and using the white feather pillow as a method of drowning out the noise that entered through her ear. It was of course, no use, and she grudgingly rolled over onto her side, reached over, and through the clock against the wall, unplugging it from it’s socket. It was only 6:00 am, and Samantha knew that it was going to be a miserable day.

With half open eyes, she stood onto the brown oak flooring of her room, which made an eerie creaking noise every time she took a step. The smell of coffee awaited her downstairs, but for Samantha, order was always important. Every morning, she would wake up, go downstairs, get ready, then eat, and this Monday morning was no time to break a habit she had been doing since she was five years old.

The bathroom floor was wet, a sign someone had been there before and had subsequently made a mess out of the once clean bathroom. But she would persevere. As she caught site of herself in the mirror, she instantly became..... satisfied. Her pale white skin, contrasted greatly to her bright red hair, which was in a complete mess, which was just the way she liked it. After slipping it back into a pony tail, she put on some blue jeans and a Red Hot Chili Peppers t-shirt, and exited the bathroom, happy with her “unsatisfactory appearance”

She immediately caught the eyes of her parents. Her father looked at her for a second, then glanced back to read the paper, a cup of coffee in his hand. Her mother, took a more hands on approach. “You know you’re never going to meet a boy when you’re dressed like that.” She said in a motherly, yet slightly peeved tone, and without even a glance, Samantha continued to walk, took out a coffee mug, and began to pour herself a cup, trying to drown out her mother’s nagging in the warm, brown liquid. “Samantha Josephine, are you even listening to me?” And her mother had said it, the dreadful middle name that Samantha was sure was mistakenly placed on her birth certificate, and that it was meant for some 19th century pioneer on her way to Oregon, not a girl in 21st century San Diego.

“I’m listening mom, and I’ll be fine.” Samantha said looking at her watch, and in a whiny tone she continued, “Ugh mom I’m already late, it’s too late to go back and redress again.”

“Oh that reminds me, I have to take James to school. Oh and he’s already late too. Bye Ted, love you. Love you too Samantha, have a good day at school.” Her mother had bought it, and Samantha had found herself free of another few hours away from the nagging of her mother. “Oh and Ted!” Her mother yelled just before exiting the door. “Be sure to feed James’ lizards. He forgot to do it this morning.”

“Yeah honey, will do.” He yelled back to her, not looking up from the paper. “Ugh I hate those things.....” he mumbled to himself as he turned the page of the paper and began to read the funnies.

Samantha chuckled. She found her dad’s dry humor welcoming compared to the shrillness of her mother. “Bye Dad. I might do something with Elisa after school today. We’ll probably just hang out....”

“Bye Sam” And her Dad went back to his paper as Samantha walked out the door.

Samantha pulled up to the front gate in her red truck a two mere minutes before being tardy. She was pleased to say the least. The class seemed to drag on forever and ever. The teacher, Ms Hallman, was an older woman, around the age of sixty, and very kind and nice, but when it came to teaching, she was as boring as the year is long, but it helped that it was English class. She had always done well in English, and had been reading since she was three and writing since she was six, but even that didn’t even help add some excitement to the “Superlatives and You” VHS that was playing on the T.V.

Slowly and slowly, her arm supporting her head began to slip and slip until it was finally flat on the table, and Samantha was fast asleep on it. For the moment, it was the greatest thing she could imagine, but it was soon interrupted by what seemed to be a ferocious pain coming from her belly. In her own dreamworld, she couldn’t tell if it were real or just some figment of her imagination, until it became so intense, her eyes bursted open, and she found her self let out a shout in the middle of the class. “OH!”

All eyes in the room seemed as if they were boring their way into her. She had to think of something quick. The horrors of being an already unpopular girl became amplified as she thought what it would mean if everyone else thought she was crazy. “I mean..... OH! What a great movie we’re watching......Can....I go to the bathroom Ms. Hallman.” With a confused look on her face and a nod of her head, she acknowledged Samantha’s request, who immediately bolted out of the room as fast as she could without looking like a complete loser.

After a fast paced walk down the hall, she found herself in the bathroom. The pain in her stomach was still there, but getting stronger. As she stared at herself in the mirror she went through all possible explanations. She hadn’t eaten anything out of the ordinary, there wasn’t a stomach virus going around, but why was she in so much pain? She lifted up her t-shirt up to her stomach and began to rub it, hoping in vain that it would feel the least bit better. The nurse’s office was out of the question as she couldn’t bare walk down three flights of stairs. All she could do was..... hope. And then, it happened. Her prayers were answered. Her wish had come true. The stomach ache, which had felt like one thousand knives had poured into her abdomen was gone.

Once again, she lifted her shirt up to her stomach to examine it once more, but to her confusion, her stomach wasn’t there...... at all. It was as if she could see through it, all the way to the back of the bathroom wall. As the initial confusion subsided, only fear remained. Nervously, she began to move her right index finger toward her stomach, and as it got closer, it touched something. It was skin, just as solid as before. Everything was there, it just seemed to be a mimic of the environment, and when she looked closely, the outline of her stomach was still visible to the naked eye “How in the....”

Suddenly, the fear returned as the emptiness began to spread from her stomach over to the rest of her body, until she saw herself, or rather, what was left of herself, as all that remained visible in the mirror was her Red Hot Chili Peppers t-shirt and her blue jeans.
