Rick & Morty: Season 3 Premiere Review

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD!

So Adult Swim showed again how it's viral way of getting attention is streets ahead of everybody. It decided to premier a new episode on April Fool's, so that most likely no on would believe them, even though it's really happening. You might think "that's dumb, they won't get as many viewers", and if you think that.... well then you're dumb! Anyway, so I got the chance to see their premier, and while I thought their season 2 finale fell kinda short of the season 1 finale, the season 3 premier really took it up a notch. This will be, as Rick said, Their Darkest year yet!

As stated before, this will be their darkest season yet, and it shows. It's a total mind squanch on the level of LEGION. I'm not sure what to believe at this point, and while I'm sure the theory that arose all the way in season 1 is still true, I'm not sure anymore of what to make of Rick.

We got to see Rick's "backstory" and it would have us believe that it's not really a true one at all. But you're left thinking.... that maybe it is. I'm hoping it is, because by the end Rick takes a really dark turn and I gotta be honest... made me think that Rick has become a bigger dick than before.

Morty on the other hand, is going through some really dark and intriguing character progression. He seems to be outgrowing Rick and it seems like he's ready to snap (I mean, that Headshot was more than just some joke). Him and Jerry are the characters that I'm most interested as to see what will happen this season.

As for the bad, I'm not sure how I feel about what happened with both the COuncil of Ricks and the Universe Government. I think the resolution seems to be way to quick and just kind of gets rid of a great concept of the show. I'm hoping we get to see the fallout from this, if not it was a total waste of these characters.

Oh, and Beth... I SQUANCHING HATER HER! It's weird to see how many people hate Jerry, but after what she did this episode, I really hate her (and Rick). I never found her to be an interesting character before (probably the least interesting in the family), but this just solidifies her as a total Squanch.

Final Thoughts

It's dark, it's a mind squanch and it's setting up some interesting storylines for future episodes. I just hope that this show makes me like Rick again somewhere down the line, and I can handle it for a while since Morty will most likely be the main focus this season.

I did not like what Beth did as well but hopefully it'll make for a great episode if they do come back together

It feels like if Rick wasn't in their lives, they'd be happy. In the Original Universe, her and Jerry become badasses, and in this world she didn't wanna lose him. Her entire character arc has gotten stale.

I'm not sure if they'll get back together, but I'm sure we're going to see a lot of Jerry this season (or at the very least no less than in previous seasons). Unless this was their way or writing him off because maybe the voice actor is busy

This episode was hilarious, I can't wait for more.

My only problem with it is that the divorce and saving earth were both things that I thought were going to take way more time,yeah I saw both things happening but only at the end of season 3 not in the first episode.

Is this tv show worth watching? Is it like south park/family guy type of show?

imo Rick and Morty is far better than what south park is now and way better than family guy ever was.

I get why people are angry with Beth but I can't even be mad because the delivery was absolutely hysterical. And it's not like Jerry is actually gone.

My only complaint is how they completely fodderized the Council of Ricks. The Council of Ricks was awesome.

It was amazing and I am happy that the show manages to keep it's quality. Rick said that the memory was a fabricated one so I think that we shouldn't really overanalyze it, maybe something similar happened but in a different way, maybe instead of Beth as a kid all of the Smith family was killed with Morty as a baby and that's how he has a memory of him.

Also did anyone think Rick's fabricated backstory was inspired by Hickman's Fantastic Four?

@jonez_: some could have survived.

A lot of them could have been on their own dimensions at the time.

I never saw it as a moment played for yucks, I just think you laugh at people in pain.

I'm sure he's not gone, and we're still most likely going to see him moving forward (because outside of R/M, he seems to have gotten the most focus in the family). But some say that it may be that he's busy, so this is their way or writing him off, atleast for this season, which I hope is not the case.

Same,

I wouldn't be surprised if the only change in the memory was the pants thing. Maybe he's been through this so many times, this is why he's a jaded prick. If he gets close to them, he'll lose them and he's tired of doing that. So the one we saw now was one family, and eventually we'll see the Evil Morty universe as well and how that went down

I tuned in expecting a new Samurai Jack episode and got Rick and Morty instead. I wasn't disappointed. It was an awesome episode! I wanna see more of Doofus Rick, though. He'd be a good rival/contrast for the main Rick.

Rick pretty much went full Chaotic Evil this episode. You have to wonder if he really cares about his Morty at all or if it's all a ploy.

We all thought he turned himself in as a selfless act to save his family. Instead it was a plot to overthrow the Galactic Government and the Council of Ricks, along with removing Jerry from the picture entirely so he wouldn't have anyone in the multiverse to challenge him. Morty is the only person alive that sees Rick for the monster he is.

I don't think Jerry is completely out of the picture, kids still visit their other parent even when they are divorced.

I believe that's what they are building up to. MOrty V Rick. That headshot, is just showing how much Morty is getting tired of Rick's shit and the destruction of his parents marriage is only an other strike against him. I believe we're bound to see Evil Morty this season, which I think the plot twist will be that Evil MOrty is actually a good guy and all Ricks (including ours) are evil.

What bothers me, is that despite the fact that Rick was painted as a hero at the end of season 2, this episode insinuates that the series needs to end with the Smith family letting go of Rick. That or they're going to make Jerry look like an even bigger asshat.

@saintwildcard:

That seems like a very likely direction to go. It is very hard to make a case for Ricks not being evil at this point, and our Morty is steadily developing an understanding of how deep that goes.

He was selling Rick as a chaotic neutral character to Summer when they had their talk, but Rick just proved to Morty what his true colors are, and now Morty has lost that last "maybe he's not EVIL per say" thread of reasoning and can see Rick for what he is.
