Mera, although more than happy with her loving husband and son desires to learn of the fate of her father and the city of Xebel which when she had been their last, was on the brink of destruction due to civil war. Mera, Arthur and some of the devote Atlantean guard set out to find Xebel but what they discover is something none could expect...
Xebel was once a prosperous underwater city which engaged in trade with the great nation of Atlantis. However, the city fell into civil-war and the king was forced to send his two daughters, Mera and Hila, to Atlantis where he knew an Atlantean lord who would keep them safe. After years, Mera & Arthur decide to seek out Xebel but where the great city once stood, there now lies a great trench. The Atlanteans descend into the trench, but horrors far greater than what they'd prepared for lie down there...
Staging a mass breakout at Belle Reve, Black Manta escapes and seeks to destroy everything Aquaman has built up. Upon learning of the king's absence from Atlantis, Manta finds the perfect opportunity to take everything Aquaman loves away from him.
Nereus led an uprising in Xebel against King Ryus which led to a civil-war. The war completely devastated the city and a huge trench opened up beneath it, pulling the once great city down. The majority of the city was destroyed but Nereus lived and took up the role as King of the destroyed city. Nereus ruled his remaining people with fear and executed any who wronged him by giving them up to the creatures of the trench, who surround the city. Upon the return of Mera to the city, Nereus attempts to kill Arthur and take Mera for his queen...
Arthur Curry Jr. is left in Atlantis under the care of Morel, Mera's most trusted hand-maiden, whilst his parents look for the city of Xebel. When Black Manta attacks and takes over Atlantis, Arthur Jr. is kept captive with the other Atlanteans until Aquaman and Mera return. Upon their return, Manta kills Arthur Jr. before blowing up the throne room. The death of their son fuels their hatred for Manta but he manages to escape.
Thought dead by Aquaman and Mera, Hila actually managed to make her way to Xebel and successfully evaded the creatures of the Trench. Nereus took her as his queen but upon the arrival of her sister Mera (Whom he thought more beautiful), tried to kill Hila.
A race of extremely violent creatures who devour any living thing in their path and reside in the Xebel trench.
Murk accompanies Arthur and Mera on their quest to find Xebel.
The chief warrior of the creatures who reside in the Xebel Trench, Charybdis is also the smartest of them. Due to this, he serves as Nereus' bodyguard after a deal is made between the creatures and the king of Xebel. During a fight with Aquaman, Charybdis manages to bite off his hand but Arthur cuts of his arm in retaliation.

The Fisherman escapes during the mass breakout at Belle Reve and aids Black Manta on his attack against Atlantis.
The Eel escapes during the mass breakout at Belle Reve and aids Black Manta on his attack against Atlantis.

Morel is Mera's most trusted hand-maiden. She tries to protect Arthur Jr. from Black Manta but he kills her.
