He knees were getting sore, he felt like he had been on them half his life. Letting out a small grunt of pain as he adjusted himself, his mother quickly quieted him. “Shh boy, unless you are praying to our Lord, remain silent!” She whispered her command with a stern tone. Once again he crossed himself and began his prayer. After his mother gave confession for the 5 time that week they left. He couldn’t imagine what she had to confess, she prayed, cooked meals and took care of his younger siblings. That didn’t leave much room for sin. He kissed his mother before he left her, “I’ll be home before dinner mother.” With that he was off into the woods to hunt.

He stalked through the woods in silence as not a leaf rustled or a twig broke. It was as if a ghost was passing through looking for its next meal. He was by far the best hunter in his village, never letting his family go hungry even in the bleakest winters when stags where few. Climbing into a high tree he walked the thick branches with ease and no fear, ready to pounce on his prey like a panther from above.

The hunger in his belly was interrupted by a new desire. His mouth watered as he looked down on a large buck feeding on the grass below. The desire grew until it was like a pain in his gut. He doubled over in pain and of just a faction of a second let his concentration slip and the leaf rustle making the slightest of noise. The bucks head rose from his meal and it’s ears perked. Don’t run, don’t run! The thought screamed inside his head. But the deer took one step and was ready to leap off into the woods. With a leap he came down on the animal knocking unto it’s side. Blackness took him over.

Richard Wolfe awoke laying on the ground covered in stickiness. He looked around the darkness; the last thing he could remember was hunting in the morning sun. It had been more than 12 hours. He could see near him the deer that he was stalking, mauled and torn by some large animal. He was thankful he wasn’t attacked by this animal.

He walked by to his home and his mother met him at the door. Explaining the strange events to her she commanded him to pray with her for forgiveness. He knees were once again sore as he prayed with his mother. His hands were folded over each other and he couldn’t help looking at the red tint that covered them. Once again his stomach ached with desire.
