Retcon's Reviews: Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro (2007-08)

Welcome back to the second installment of this review series after a mon- wow it’s been over a month, huh? Well, hiatuses and all. Not like you’ve been following this series since it’s literally the second one I‘ve made…

So, now my new review of Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro (aka Supernatural/Demon Detective), probably the most underrated, unknown, and UNIQUE shounen I’ve ever found by far. None of my friends who know very obscure anime even know this. The only reason I found out about this show was from the J Stars Victory Vs shounen crossover game. Thus, I'm very glad to say that this is a very good anime for being so unknown.

Putting things into perspective, the show is 25 episodes long and was made by studio Madhouse in 2007-08, who is currently doing One Punch Man. It is directed by Hiroshi Koujina, who directed the 2011 adaptation of Hunter X Hunter. It’s animated by the same staff that animated Death Note and written by Yuusei Matsui, the same creator who wrote the recently popular Assassination Classroom.

Before I begin the reviewing process I’ll give the basic synopsis. The show revolves around a demon named Neuro who comes to the human world. This is not any ordinary shounen demon, however. He is a demon detective who literally eats the essence/aura of mysteries after successfully solving them. The reason he came to the demon world is because he already ate all of the mysteries in the demon world and is still hungry for more. He utilizes 777 tools of the demon world, each as unique in design and use as the last… of course, he doesn’t get to use all 777 since the show’s only 25 episodes.

He finds mystery revolving around a girl named Yako Katsuragi, a high school girl whose father was recently killed in a very mysterious case. This case, however, was closed due to its improbability and labeled by the police department as suicide. Some of the series will spend time to reflect these events in flashbacks as the characters develop and learn more. Neuro uses Yato as his connection to the human world, acting as Yako’s assistant and making her the famous “High School Girl Detective” even though in reality Neuro is doing all of the work to satisfy his appetite.

Speaking of appetites, Yako’s is… huge, to the point where she is also known as the "glutton detective." She eats so much and finds so much joy in eating that it even puts other shounen characters like Goku and Luffy to shame, easily eating an entire all-you-can-eat buffet before the guest could even show up. Also, Neuro, being a demon and all, could care less about human life and thus treats his “underlings” with sadistic force, usually dragging Yako around and twisting her neck in comedic fashion.

Another main-ish, mostly supporting, character introduced is Neuro’s “servant #2,” Godai. Godai is a former “finance dealer” of the underworld who did all of the dirty work (not hell but rather the human underworld… you know, the mafia) and acts as the tough yet soft-on-the-inside-in-comedic-ways connection to the underworld to access information quickly.

Now, a show revolving around mystery and detective work must certainly deliver those concepts, right? Well, the mysteries are not on the same level of Detective Conan or Sherlock Holmes, if that’s what you expected. Still, the mysteries are very entertaining and the villains, though somewhat predictable at the “great reveal,” are all very unique characters in their own right. A minor spoiler if you don’t mind, for example: the villain of the first episode is a master chef hoping to make the perfect soup by filling it with great stuff… like heroin, steroids, and other dandy drugs (sarcasm). He then injects it into himself to become… the Hulk, pretty much.

Speaking of episodes, if you’re afraid that this is strictly episodic as a series, it’s not. It is episodic for the first third of the series but then really picks up on the plot when the main villains of the series are introduced. As the series get less episodic, the fights also get much more intense. Another fairly minor spoiler yet important plot point for those foolish brave enough: The more Neuro spends time with humans, the less bulletproof and the less powerful he becomes until he begins bleeding from things that he would normally deflect with ease. Due to this, things get very interesting very quickly.

The animation is pretty good, resembling Death Note in some styles. The facial expressions are done well, normally, though sometimes animation quality may go down a tad bit, though not noticeable at all IMO, unless you studied it as closely as it did. The dialogue is good and the character development is really good. The action scenes are great when they get going. The plot isn’t super dramatic or in depth but it’s still a very fun and well-crafted story.

...The opening is amazing.

All in all, this series is definitely worth a watch. It’s a really unknown and underrated gem that I really think more people should know about. Considering it’s a shounen, it’s very unique in concept. It’s also only 25 episodes, the middle ground for anime, which means it’s not a huge committment to finish like a super long one like One Piece or Naruto/Shippuden.

I give Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro 66 out of 777 tools of the demon world (... about 8.5/10, for those who don’t want to calculate it).

Stay classy... you know, like classroom? High School Detective? Assassination Classroom? Sorry. Guess I'll just expel myself from the situation before I get suspended by discontent... heheh.

Retcon's Reviews: Turtles Forever (2009)

Hi! This is RetconCrisis, and I'm starting a new series called Retcon's Reviews. *confetti and horns*

This series will pretty much cover anything and everything from comics, movies, TV shows, anime, manga, comic-related products, and the sort. I welcome any constructive criticism to make this review system better, considering this is my first one.

No Caption Provided

This time, I'm starting off with the 2009 animated movie Turtles Forever, which takes place mainly in the 2003 TMNT universe. This is probably the third time that I've watched this movie all the way through, once when it first came out, the second a few years ago, and the third for this review, so this is in no way a "first impressions" review.

Allow me to start by saying that this movie can be thoroughly enjoyed without previously viewing the 2003 series; all you need is just basic knowledge about the TMNT and their enemies. What you should know, however, is that the Shredder from the 2003 series is NOT Oroku Saki (original), but rather Utrom Shredder, an alien named Ch'rell, who impersonates Shredder after the original was defeated. That is all.

The basic premise of this movie is a crossover movie; the 1987 turtles find themselves teleported to the 2003 turtles' universe, as well as their respective villains: Shredder, Krang, Foot Clan, etc.

For those of you who grew up with the 1987 cartoon series, I'll comment that the characters themselves have changed quite a bit for the storyline. Not all of the turtles' voice actors have returned, as far as I know. However, the new voices do a good job portraying them. Also, the 1987 turtles have been toned down a lot in seriousness. The '87 turtles are much goofier so as to provide comedic effect and a contrast between the more serious '03 ones, which leads to some really well-put-together and humorous interactions between the two teams as well as their villains. '87 Raph also makes a few 4th wall-breaks, leaving both '03 heroes and villains in confusion, which is absolutely hilarious

Expect a lot of corny jokes from that end. And puns from both ends.

Focusing on the plot, it is a pretty simple crossover plot: the two versions of heroes must team up to defeat the villains of their two respective villains. Multiverse traveling and whatnot. But, the way the movie executes the plot makes it so entertaining and fun. The characters and plot are altered around (and, themselves, by *hint hint*) the mutagen chemical that the '87 turtles and Shredder are fighting over, which was not present in the '03 universe. I will point out that there isn't much of a sense of danger until the second half, when the gears really start turning and unhinging themselves and begin rolling off along a hill into a chemical synthesizing plant next to a gunpowder storage room attached to the hole in the Death Star... but I digress.

The animation is superb, and the action scenes are great. The animation really captures the humor and feel of all of it. The characters with the '87 animation style looks pretty much the same. There's also a cameo with the original gritty-looking 1985 Mirage comics' style, which looks pretty much perfect in terms of representation. The musical score is pretty good and fits the movie's scenes well, and is based on the 2003 series's score, if not exactly the same.

The ending is puled off really well and does another great homage to the original creators of the '85 Mirage comic, Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman.

All in all, this is a really fun movie for anyone who is a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The character interactions are well done and in some scenes hilarious. This is (in my opinion) the best animated TMNT movie we'll ever get in a very long time and the best thing 4Kids has made.

So if you're interested in what I've stated, Turtles Forever is worth a shot. Any turtles fan (with good humor and isn't easily offended by the new portrayal of the '87 turtles) will enjoy at very, very least the pure fanservice aspect of the movie (and, no, by fanservice I don't mean... that... type of fanservice...). Just don't take this movie like it's the next Citizen Kane and go along with the fun. So yeah, go and watch it. Now. Go, now. Move alo-

For what it is, I give Turtles Forever (2009) 9 angrily-confused mutant Huns out of 10 corny turtle puns. Hey, that rhymed.

Ares (DC) Respect Thread

> Due to the lack of a DC Ares wiki-page on the Vine, I decided to make this respect thread.

Skills - Ares gains the ability to access every martial art form and every military tactic in all of history.

Genesis - Ares is able to break through the Source's barrier, and then proceeds to kill Highfather Izaya of the New Gods fairly easily

Power Output - Ares is able to one-shot Herakles (Hercules), someone who was able to tangle with a Doomsday clone prior to that. Then Ares aids Darkseid in defeating Zeus (It is not shown who beats him, but Ares is possibly part of the cause of it).

Invulnerability to Mortal Harm - The first scan shows Ares cannot be harmed by normal weapons or means and can only be hurt by magic. In the second scan, it shows that Ares is unaffected by Medusa's stare (which turns people to stone) while in previous pages Circe and Wonder Woman had to shield their eyes or look away from her.

Prep - Mars, Ares's Roman counterpart with nearly the same power level, is able the re-size himself to become the size of a Promethean giant, who are so big that they are able to hold planets in the palms of their hands.

With preparation, Mars is then able to generate and change his cosmic shift pattern so that he can tap into the Source's frequency, and then uses the Source's powers to pull Ares out of the Source Wall. He then uses those same powers to fuse with Ares to form the single, fused war god, Ares. This shows that Ares's war tactics and planning are enough to even outsmart Metron, the Inventor New God with genius level intellect.

Matter Manipulation - Ares manipulates the matter of a cavern, and then warps/teleports Cassie back to the Teen Titans.

Empowerment - Ares has the ability to give Cassie powers when Zeus takes them away from her, leaving her even stronger than before.

War of the Gods - Even while weakened, Ares is able to keep up with his Roman counterpart, Mars, even though that Mars has a very similar, if not the same, power set as him.

Ares's Declaration - Ares becomes more and more powerful with every blow and every conflict started.

Avatar Creation - Ares shows that gods have the ability to create life, including human Avatars for them to manipulate and control.

No Caption Provided

War Manipulation - Ares manipulates and controls these soldiers to attack Wonder Woman while Ares gets the object of importance in the two's first comic encounter.

No Caption Provided

The God-Fearing Gods - Even the Gods of Olympus themselves have become afraid of Ares, due to Ares becoming even stronger than them (maybe even combined), including the three head Gods of Olympus, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades.

No Caption Provided

Soul Manipulation - Removing the souls of his children with little effort and then proceeding to send their souls to Hades.

Pandora's Box - Ares takes and absorbs the demons of Pandora's box, making him much more powerful than before. Also, in this scan, he also shows us that he has a pretty fast travel speed as well

No Caption Provided

Godly Harm - Wounds created by gods such as Ares do not heal like they should, which is why a wound inflicted by Ares could not even be healed by the healing ray, which usually heals wounds similar to it quite easily.

No Caption Provided

Just for Spotlight - Ares shows that he has a sense of humor... and that in itself is utterly terrifying(!)

No Caption Provided

Couldn't find any of his reality-warping or time-traveling feats, unfortunately.

Gonna add more scans when I have time.
