Reef has been gone for around a year deep into the dark blue abyss learning new techiques and abilities from the greatest warriors ever lived. He has resurfaced the ocean floor ready to fight off anything that comes his way.

That's great idea cause I just ran into another Atlantis. This is pretty cool though! I guess it's one from an alternate than where I was raised in the CVnU.

@meison_calidus@surkit

I found it, New Atantis! I'm an Atlantean from a Royal bloodline. My city has fallen into ruins and have been searching for this place since its destruction. Where could I find the man in charge around here, cause I want in!

Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men comes to mind for new readers.

this, along with House of M, AvsX, and Uncanny Avengers would catch you up enough to read any current X-men books, especially if you're coming at it from an Avengers perspective.

Should I be picking up the 4 volumes of Astonishing X-Men, or what volume do you recommend me picking up before reading House of M and what volume should I read in AvsX, all 3? I knew I shoulda been following X-Men more. 2007-2009 (and comics for that matter) was a busy time for me as I was traveling around the world for surfing and didn't have much of the time to be reading comics. Although I found a way to do so with the titles I was already reading (Justice League to be specific), I had no time to be picking up on the ones I wanted to such as X-Men and AvX. There's a lot of TPB for X-Men comics I know that for sure, but what's a short list of TPB that I should pick up? Here is what I got so far written down for my pull list:

  • X-Men: First Class
  • Astonishing X-Men vol. 1
  • House of M
  • X-Men: Messiah Complex
  • X-Men: Second Coming
  • X-Men: Schism
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past

First Class is good, but not as relevant. If you're trying to save money, I'd say this one can wait.

You actually want Astonishing X-Men vol.3 (2004), issues 1-24 (+Giant Size #1). Those are all collected in four trades, Gifted, Dangerous, Torn, and Unstoppable. If you are strapped for cash, you could easily skip Dangerous (or read it later), but I highly recommend the other three.

House of M is a really good idea. Takes place during the aforementioned period of Astonishing', contextualizes contemporary plots and themes, etc.. recommended.

Days of Future Pastis pretty classic stuff. I don't think it's essential to getting into X-men now, but it is really fun and it's only a two issue story, and they're generally reprinted together. Also, if you're into the classic, quintessential 80's stuff, I'd also highly recommend God Loves/Man Kills. Dark, and a bit dated, but still really amazing stuff.

the rest of the list is all decent, but if you're looking to be economical, it's all stuff that can wait until after you get the more relevant stuff. Good luck anyway, I hope this helps.

K sounds good, yea I watched movie anyway :P

But for the Astonishing X-Men trades, could I just get the first volume, gifted then skip the other three until later or are they essentials for the continuity? As for House of M, yea I heard it's a great read and will be picking up that for sure. And for Days of Future Past, I really wanted to get it more so because of the movie that's coming out and so I'll be more psyched to see the movie. As for the others, that sounds good to me. Can't really afford all of that at once, so I'll be narrowing it down, then expanding after I catch up on the series.

X-Men: God Loves - Man kills. If there is one story that captures what the X-Men is about it is this story.

I forgot to add this one. I heard it's a great read. This TPB is on my list too.

@diamondlifer1: @tomchu: Thanks again for the advice. Is the list above somewhat accurate? Really don't want to be spending a bunch of money in a short period of time, so what should I be reading first and what TPB are the most important?
