Thor Feats -- Reading Guide For Dummies --

Why this guide ?

I noticed a long time ago that a lot of people struggle at reading and even if reading a comic book is way easier than reading a book it seems that they don't have the basical knowledge to read and understand simple feats in comics.

That article is for you guys.

What is in this guide ?

Here you will find all of Thor's feats misinterpreted and corrected in the proper way.

My point here is to debunk the fallacies and misinformations that are casually spread over the internet to make it a better place.

Of course some reactions are expected.

What do you need ?

I highly value the use of the Dictionary in this exercice it gives to you good information and the definitions that you need to understand what happens in the books and in the comic books.

Of course, you need to know the context and the characters too so it matters to read the information that Marvel provide via the Marvel Handbooks, the other comic books, the writer words through different medias including the comic books, the interviews and their presence on the social networks.

The wiki can be a reliable source of information but personnaly I use them most to track the comic books I need to check the informations I need.

Exemples of Dictionaries :

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/

http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/

How to use a dictionary ? The exemple of the word "BOTH".

Imagine that you have no knowledge about two characters, so you lack of context about them, and that you don't fully understand some sentences in the comic book that you are reading.

For exemple :

No Caption Provided

"And though the power both men spit out is enough to shred entire worlds Captain America knows they are actually still holding back !"

Let's focus :

"The power both men spit out is enough is enough to shred entire worlds"

If you lack of knowledge about the characters, you surely don't know that during this story Genis-Vell is on the verge to destroy the Universe so he can actually destroy entire worlds while holding back and if you lack of knowledge about The Sentry, you probably don't know that since the beginning of his mini-serie he is considered as an Universal-threat and that he released at least "the energy of a single planet" against Absorbing Man without exerting himself at all as he was probably holding back as the notion of exertion require a vigorous effort.

But imagine that a casual reader have this comic book in his hands and try to understand what is happening.

How do we use "both" in the English language ?

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/both

Usage Note: Both indicates that the action or state denoted by the verb applies individually to each of two entities. Both books weigh more than five pounds, for example, means that each book weighs more than five pounds by itself, not that the two books weighed together come to more than five pounds. Both is inappropriate where the verb does not apply to each of the entities by itself. · In possessive constructions, of both is usually preferred in standard usage: the mothers of both (rather than both their mothers); the fault of both (rather than both their fault or both's fault). · When both is used with and to link parallel elements in a sentence, the words or phrases that follow them should correspond grammatically: in both India and China or both in India and in China (not both in India and China).

The starting sentence :

"The power both men spit out is enough is enough to shred entire worlds"

Reformulation :

"Both men spit out enough power to shred entire worlds", means that each man spit enough power by himself to shred entire worlds.

To summarize :

The Sentry has enough power to shred entire worlds while holding back.

Genis-Vell has enough power to shred entire worlds while holding back.

Planet-busting :

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/busting

bust

v.i. Informal.

1. to burst. 2. to break or separate; split (usu. fol. by up). 3. to go bankrupt. 4. to collapse from the strain of making a supreme effort.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/burst

burst

1. a. To come open or fly apart suddenly or violently, especially from internal pressure.b. To explode.

A planet-busting attack is an attack that explode a planet.

That implies that a planet-busting attack destroy / explode a planet in one-hit.

I) Can Thor tank a planet-busting attack ?

Planet-busting :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_planet_killers

In science fiction, a planet killer, planet buster, or similar variations on that meaning, is a fictional object or device capable of either destroying an entire planet or otherwise rendering it uninhabitable[1] – a variety of a doomsday device. Examples of such devices include the Death Star from the Star Wars film franchise, the "Doomsday Machine" seen in the original Star Trek television series or the atomic-powered stone burners from Frank Herbert's Dune franchise.

The term "planet-buster" has also come into use with reference to major natural disasters such as significant asteroid impact events.[2]

Thor #387 : Thor fly in space and passes out because of the lack of oxygen as he had no time to hold his breath as he was teleported in space without warning and couldn't fulfill his lungs with air.

1) Thor fly through a Doomsday missile. This missile has the power to destroy a planet in one-hit.

Thor hit the Warhead direct center.
Thor hit the Warhead direct center.
Thor pass through the Doomsday missile and avoid the blast.
Thor pass through the Doomsday missile and avoid the blast.

2) The team whom launched the missile look at the scene thanks to their drones that allow them to have a close view of what's happening :

The writer uses the character whom assissted to the scene to give to us additional information :

As we previously seen, Thor has hit the warhead direct center and been traveling fast enough to pass completely through the Doomsday missile BEFORE he could detonate but the schockwaves torn him apart.

3) The team pick Thor in a crater and uses some revitalizing capsule to save his life as Thor is barely alive :

Conclusion :

Thor can't tank a planet-busting attack as the schockwaves are enough to kill him.

II) Can Thor deliver a planet-busting attack ?

1) Gorr is ejected from the planet the Thors and him were fighting on.

2) Gorr landed on a moon and throws chunks of the moon at the Thors so they goes here and continue to fight him.

3) Thor goes to fight toe-to-toe with Gorr and hit Gorr several times with his hammer. The moon under their feet begin to crackle and the nearby moon which is a few kilometers away begin to crackle too.

The schockwaves of the fight crackles the nearby moons.
The schockwaves of the fight crackles the nearby moons.

Conclusion :

We see Thor displaying here a remarkable striking power as the schockwaves of his multiples attacks slowly crackles the moons around him.

That's impressive but we are really far away from the definition of planet-busting damages which requires to destroy a planet in one hit.

So can Thor destroy a planet ?

Probably but that will require for him a lot of exertion, he will have to hammer the planet like a crazy to slowly destroy it.

Here Thor is near little moons, nothing that we can compare with the Earth.

Thor isn't a planet-buster.

III) Did Thor hit Gorr so hard that he created a blackhole ?

Gorr create a whormhole to summon his blach dragons.

Thor just send him back to his wormhole

IV) Can Thor tank attacks from the Celestials ?

1) Thor is hit 3 times by the Celestials.

2) Thor is dying of his wounds and his mother Gaea comes to help him.

3) Thor is unconcious.

4) Gaea heals Thor wounds and Thor recognize that he succumbed of his wounds.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/succumb?s=t

succumb

1. to give way in face of the overwhelming force (of) or desire (for)

2. to be fatally overwhelmed (by disease, old age, etc); die (of)

Conclusion :

Thor is very durable, the Celestials attacks didn't vaporize him but he can't tank them as he died after 3 shots.

V) Did Moondragon try to force Thor to obey via a telepathic attack ?

Moondragon ASK Thor to stop fighting Drax and obey to the Goddes's plan.

Of course you used it as a TP resistance feat and that's not the case here.

Conclusion :

Moondragon communicates via TP with Thor.

There is no question here of Moondragon using her TP to subdue Thor in any way.

She just ask Thor to recall his allegeance to the Goddess and Thor refuse.

It's not a contest of will, nor a contest of power.

Thor just refused an asking...

VI) Did Thor tank a planet-busting attack from a Thanosi and can a Thanosi deliver a planet-busting attack ?

There is several things to know about the context here :

  • It was a Thanos-clone and he was boosted by the artefact in his hand
  • This clone used a "planet-devouring" attack on a planet far away and this attack was far from being a planet-busting attack.
  • Thor was trapped in an energy-net by the Thanosi that was slowly and painfully killing him.
  • Firelord saved him and could kill him with a blast far weaker than a planet-busting attack.

Here the effects of the planet-devouring attack :

Moreover the Thanos's bio state that his Thanosi uses a planet-devouring attack :

de·vour

(dĭ-vour′)

tr.v. de·voured, de·vour·ing, de·vours

1. To eat up greedily. See Synonyms at eat.

2. To destroy, consume, or waste: Flames devoured the structure in minutes.

3. To take in eagerly: devour a novel.

4. To preoccupy or obsess in a harmful way: was devoured by jealousy.

We can see the blast slowly devouring the planet like the flames slowly consume a structure.

The point here is that Thor fanboys claim that Thor tanked a planet-busting attack.

It is false for some reason :

  • The energy web that trapped Thor is another type of attack. We can recognize the energy web easily at it's colour is pink.
  • The planet-devouring attack is directed at the planet at this moment.
  • Firelord use his own blast to free Thor of the energy web's grip and state that there is a risk for Thor to die of it in the process.

Later in the same comic book, the Thanosi direct his planet-devouring attack at Thor but the Asgardian has some magical items like a shield imbued with the Odinforce that block the attack so he is never touched by the planet-devouring attack.

You can notice that the energy web emanates from the Thanosi and that Firelord himself state that the energy web is the Thanosi's fact :

The energy-web is linked to the Tanosi's aura.
The energy-web is linked to the Tanosi's aura.
Firelord himseld speak about the
Firelord himseld speak about the "Thanos's evil web".

Some people will argue that the energy web comes from Tarrakis and they are actually misguided.

The drawer used a different color than the yellow of the Thanosi's planet-devouring attack to make us understand that it's a different power.

  1. The Thanosi boosted by his artefacts.
  2. Odin imbue some magical items with the Odinforce.
  3. Thor block the Thanosi energy attack with the shield imbued by the Odinforce.

Conclusion :

Thor can't tank a planet-busting attack.

The attack of firelord and the energy-web are far from being that powerful and could kill him.

VII) Did Thor one-shot Hulk with a lightning bolt ?

Let's count the number of hit per scan during the whole fight between Hulk and Thor :.

  1. Two.
  2. One.
  3. One
  4. Two.
  5. One lightning bolt.

Let's do some "maths".

2 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 6.

Thor delivers 6 hits to Hulk before delivering the lightning-bolt.

It's not a one-shot !

Moreover Hulk will recover fast later and KO Thor !

Conclusion :

Thor can't one-shot Hulk with a lightning-bolt !

This never happened in any comics !!!!

VIII) Can Thor survive a Supernova ?

This happened in the "Infinity Crusade" when the heroes face The Goddess

http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix3/goddessic.htm

He was supposed to die of the Supernova as shown here.

1) Thor and Drax see the Supernova coming.

2) The Supernova disintegrate them.

Why they survived :

1) Thanos explain to the Goddess that she have been tricked.

"The recently deceased open their eyes in dumbfounded amazement !" => The Supernova was supposed to kill everybody.

Panel (with Thor and Drax) :

"They stagger the realization that they have been saved from a fate that never was."

2) More explanations about "Oh my God ! It wasn't real and we are all alive !"

3) Adam Warlock explanations. Adam was in the Goddess subconcious. (panels 3, 4 & 5)

AM : "Being in effect part of the Goddess's being and in contact with the Cosmic Egg... I ordered it to create a Galaxy-wide illusion of Armaggeddon a mere moment before she instituted the real thing."

Thor isn't able to survive a supernova, nor survived one.

If we compare Thor to Superman in that case :

  1. Thor is disintegrated by a Supernova if it's a real one.
  2. Superman is just KOed by a Supernova.

IX) Can Thor beat The Sentry ? (specifically during Siege)

The writer words

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=26287

In this scene, Thor finally ends the threat of the Void AKA Bob Reynolds by killing him. It seems like when you consider the Void's power level, the only way this could have happened was because the Void wanted to die.

I see there is a lot of online speculation about that, and I thought it was pretty clear. I don't like to over analyze these things. I prefer the work to speak for itself, but I'll put two things out there.

I think we've all met crazy people in our lives, and I think you learn pretty quickly that when you're dealing with a crazy person, you can't trust what they're saying to be true. Just because the Sentry/The Void announced that he had the power of the Molecule Man, it doesn't mean that he actually did. He just thought that he did. He was a crazy person and maybe a drug addict, as the character's creator, Paul Jenkins, put out there. So not everything he was saying wasn't necessarily true. Maybe it was. Maybe it wasn't. I know that's difficult for some people, because when they read a story, they don't want to feel like they're being fucked with. That character, though, was not in control of himself. There wasn't one second throughout the run of "Dark Avengers" where he was in control of himself.

Number two, yes, Bob realized that things had gone as far as they could possibly go. There was no other end for him and without his cooperation he doesn't go away. I just didn't want to have a line in the script where someone like Spider-Woman goes, "Boy, if he didn't want us to kill him, we couldn't have killed him." I see a lot of people got it, though, or they were just so happy to see the Sentry die they didn't give a shit how it happened [Laughs].

Thor can't beat The Sentry.

In the "What if ? 200", Sentry didn't have the mental breakdown and the outcome was totally different as he didn't want anybody to kill him.

Let's see what happened :

Sentry killed Ares days before Siege and had time to rest before it so he had no mental breakdown.

So How will be a fight between him and Thor then ?

Very quick. Sentry can kill Thor in one hit.
Very quick. Sentry can kill Thor in one hit.

Thor can't beat The Sentry. They are not in the same league.

X) Did Thor and Beta Ray Bill bust many stars ?

I've read somewhere that Thor and BRB destroyed many stars... Reading the comic book in Thor #340, I don't understand how the readers can come to that conclusion.

Thor and Beta Ray Bill had to face a massive invasion of Demons. In order to counter them, they had to find a portal / Gateway from where the Demons where released in the universe.

1) The portal is in the core of the Galaxy that once housed the Civilization of Bill's homeworld. That's why there is planets and stars at lightyears around. The portal is in the center of the Galaxy...

2) It took some time for Thor and BRB to reach the core of the Galaxy and therefore the portal.

3) The duo come close to the Galactic core and the portal, and are unable to force an entrance through it.

4) They both throw Mjolnir and Stormbreaker at the portal's center so they collide and destroy the portail itself. Then the portal explode.

Thor and BRB just destroyed a portal in the core of a Galaxy.

They didn't busted stars, nor tanked the explosion of stars and we knows that, thanks to the points 1 and 8 that Thor can be killed by far less than that.

Conclusion :

Questions :

  1. Can Thor tank a planet-busting attack ?
  2. Can Thor deliver a planet-busting attack ?
  3. Did Thor hit Gorr so hard that he created a blackhole ?
  4. Can Thor tank attacks from the Celestials ?
  5. Did Moondragon try to force Thor to obey via a telepathic attack ?
  6. Did Thor tank a planet-busting attack from a Thanosi and can a Thanosi deliver a planet-busting attack ?
  7. Did Thor one-shot Hulk with a lightning bolt ?
  8. Can Thor survive a Supernova ?
  9. Can Thor beat The Sentry ? (specifically during Siege)
