  • Pilai is a Kosmosian insect who made contact with Dr. Vernon Van Dyne through the use of Dr. Janos Trovaya's EMP Communication Device. Pilai shared his knowledge with Van Dyne who in turn retrofitted everything he learned to the available scientific methods of his time. Pilai then convinced Van Dyne to create a quantum tunnel that would allow Pilai to enter Earth. Van Dyne was successful in bringing Pilai to Earth but Van Dyne was arrested by Stasi officers soon after. Pilai then inhabited Nina Tsiolkovsky who witnessed the arrest of Dr. Van Dyne. Pilai became the voice in Nina's head whom she referred to as Comrade X. Both Pilai and Nina viewed Hank Pym as a threat especially when he became the elusive Ant-Man. Nina and Pilai set up a trap for Pym by allowing Maria to escape East Berlin and return to Hungary. The trap goes perfectly and Pilai/ Nina torture Pym into designing another quantum tunnel that will allow Pilai to bring an invasion to Earth. Janet Van Dyne rescues Pym and his newborn son from Hungary but Pilai never lost sight of the Ant-Man. Pilai eventually collaborated with Elihas Starr when he worked with Hank Pym at SHIELD. Elihas and Pilai wanted to create a quantum tunnel of grander scale but Elihas had no idea what Pilai intended to use the tunnel once it was complete. When Elihas was fired and discredited by Pym, Pilai convinced Elihas to move their operation to Venezuela where their work can continue unimpeded. When Starr's quantum tunnel collapsed on itself, Pilai was left with no memory of his former self until the Ant-Man publicly resurfaced during the Civil War.
