Why Being A Cosmo Girl Is So Great

So someone asked me recently what a Cosmo Girl is. I think that a lot of people have sort of a certain stereotype associated with the phrase. **coughs** Ho Ho Ho **coughs** . Being a Cosmo Girl is empowering. Just like I told my dear friend, a Cosmo Girl is the following:

The Cosmo Girl is a woman who is a leader in everyway. She is a beautiful, sexually active and usually single woman in her early twenties to mid thirties. She is a city girl working in the Corporate World. Financially secure, she doesn't need a man or help. A sexual minx who knows how to treat a man should she settle down. She is physically at her prime and ensures she maintains it. She is a fashionista and knows the latest trends, be them financial, fashionable or cultural. In short: She is the Alpha Female.

We live in a day and age where females are no longer oppressed. Ok, yes. There are still some closed-minded people out there, countries where we need women's rights and some issues in first world nations too, like equal pay, sure but we have a lot more opportunities now then we did 50 years ago. Being a Cosmo Girl means that I am a strong and independent woman. It means that I will do what I need to do and won't take any flack from anyone. It means that I can enjoy myself and I know that just because I like to cook dinner for my man or give him a massage, doesn't mean that I am a weak and controlled female. It means that I can work and provide for myself, pamper myself and enjoy a certain kind of lifestyle. I make my own choices. I will take myself where I want to go and get there with class and sophistication. I enjoy my femininity and have no qualms about enjoying it to the fullest.

I love being a Cosmo Girl. It means that I am confident in being a woman and I don't need to fight to be anything more then just that. I am Woman - Hear Me Roar!

I always thought Cosmo and other female magazines hurt/degraded women by creating an unobtainable idea of female perfection, but I have a penis so what do I know.

@Glitch_Spawn: =O you saucy minx, you

@menaceforever: COSMOPEOPLE UNITE!

@Blood1991: I think that that is a common misconception. While yes, magazine's in general do portray unrealistic photos of women.. everyone knows they are photo shopped to the extreme. The idea behind Cosmo though, is really about empowerment. It's about pampering yourself and enjoying your femininity. Too many people misinterpret that as being weak or with loose morals... It's actually kind of sad that a woman can't be comfortable in her own skin without someone taking it as her being too promiscuous...

@space_coyote: Haha omg that is HI-larious. Some of the articles in the magz are definitely worth a good laugh =D

I don't really consider myself a Cosmo Girl, but the interesting thing about it is that is how much it changed the market. Other magazines have copied the format to some degree or other (with Glamour being an almost complete rip-off) and so Cosmopolitan for what it was is not as edgy any more. So I don't read it exclusively or maybe even regularly, but I do read it often enough. The thing recently for me though about Cosmo is its excellent articles on safety for women. Kind of shows it has a moral center behind all of the fun.

@RazzaTazz: I don't really think that being a CosmoGirl is about reading a copy of Cosmo... It's not supposed to be about being edgy, its supposed to be about celebrating who you are. I do have to agree that I have enjoyed the real life stories although I am not quite sure that makes it "moral"? More substantial, maybe.

I don't understand why everyone keeps referring to the magazine, this blog is not about being someone who reads a magazine. It is about being a CosmoGirl which are two completely different things.

Well, getting back on topic, I regard the term Cosmo Girl to mean a woman who discards prevalent societal ideas of what an attractive young woman should behave and also, present herself. There are so many opinions expressed when speaking about how a woman dresses - what one person may call slutty, another person may call sexy. Being sexy is not a bad thing. It does not mean you are promiscuous, and dressing conservatively does not mean you are a prude. And both those terms are useless.

I believe as a woman I should do what I want, when I want with whomever I want. Or not. I have never and will never judge other women, and especially not with labels like whore or frigid. In fact, those who would think I am a slut because of how I sometimes dress are simply confirming tome that I look hot. Why else would you be so critical? It's an insecurity on their end - a confident women who embraces her sexuality in such an obvious way can very threatening to some another women and that's too bad.

Another interesting thing that I've noticed is that older women always advise me to flaunt what I got now, when I am still young. They share with me their regret in restricting themselves when they were young, that had they another chance to do it again, they would wear the highest heels and the shortest skirts. And not for male attention (or female for those of a different yoke) but for themselves. It awesome to feel sexy. A woman who feels sexy feels incredibly powerful and that confidence will more than likely lead to success in whatever she wants to pursue.

So, that to me is a Cosmo girl.

I can't remember her name but there is a famous blogger, a pretty blonde girl who discusses things of this nature. I was introduced to her by @Duchess and this particular segment was about how women would call out other women for wearing sexy Hallowe'en costumes. Her take was that why shouldn't women who have the figure to get away with these outfits wear them on such a fun night? Why the hell not? Women should be high-fiving each other on the street, encouraging and admiring and complimenting each other on their outfits. I get the whole competition/vying for a man/mate thing, but I think this example can be applied to the term Cosmo Girl. She's the chick who will wear that sexy French maid costume, but not just on Hallowe'en but on any day should she like to. And she should still be high-fived by women on the street because it really is ownership of your femininity to be comfortable enough to do so..

Got nice boobs? Get that cleavage showing.

Got a nice booty? Wear those tight jeans with pride, girl!

Great legs? Shorts and mini skirts and rocking heels.

I myself admire beautiful, sexy woman I come across. Leaning forward to fix my lipstick in the public washroom, I have turned many a time to compliment women around me. And yes, should a friend of mine hook up with that gorgeous guy she's been eye-balling all night, I will be toasting her with my Mai Tai as she heads out the door for some extended fun. Why the hell not?

It works the opposite as well. I like my track pants, loose t-shirts and converse, I like my plain jane pencil skirts, to the neck ruffled silk blouses with sensible and low heeled pumps. And I can look sexy in those outfits as well because of confidence in how I look, because I am dressing for me.

Like a Cosmo Girl.

:)

I completely agree with all of this. I hate that confidence can be turned into such an ugly thing. If I want to show a little cleavage or show off some skin, that is my prerogative. I do it for me. I love make up. I think it's an art. In fact, I think it's the only kind of art I am good at. I wear it often and I wear it for myself. I've had boyfriends who told me the usual "you don't need it" , "I like you natural", etc.. but that was never the point? I don't wear make up for them, I wear it for me. Because I enjoy it. The same thing goes for my wardrobe preferences. I don't aim to please anybody but myself. And when my girlfriends look good, hell yea I am going to tell them. I celebrate the beauty of the women. I don't need to play that catty, "that dress makes you look pregnant" game. It is RIDICULOUS. But I feel like I am moving off topic...

I don't think that being a Cosmo girl is just about feeling/being sexy. That confidence you mention? It branches out into all areas of life. It means that you are successful in what you choose to do, regardless of what that may be. I want to be a barista? Then I'm going to be the best barista there ever was. I want to get to wall street? Then watch me climb that corporate ladder. I want to learn how to make wine? I'm going to make a bottle so good you'll cry. It's a mindset. You can take care of yourself, provide for yourself and choose to do things for yourself.

You want something, so you go after it and take it and make sure that you get it. Going back to the Spice Girls, GIRL POWER!

No, but seriously. I am a woman and I love it. That is what being a CosmoGirl is all about. She embraces her femininity and enjoys it to the fullest, whether that means she wears 5" heels and mini-dress or nike's and a fitted. She is going to take care of herself and do it with style. Sophistication, class, elegance, confidence, beauty... These are the things that a CosmoGirl exudes and every woman is capable of them. =)

@Raiiyn: Oh no I not telling you to go bare butt (so to speak). By mask I mean a false perception (hope I'm using that right) you're passing off to be real. I'm not saying thats what your doing or anything like that. Just I know alot of women who are insecure about themselves and cover it be creating a false image of themselves.

Just food for thought d^_^b

@superstay: I can see that... but no... I'm pretty confident... I know I'm good looking and I don't need to hide behind anything =) The thing is that there are a lot of insecure women, yes but they shouldn't be... I mean there are so many different people with different tastes.. Some men hate the photo-shopped images they see in magazines. My friend Oz tells me all the time I should eat something. And some men love fit girls...

I wish more women were able to love themselves... Seriously. I think these crazy little girls out there need to stop trying to impress men and just impress themselves... So much more gratifying. A woman's body is one of the most beautiful things in this world.

You're right

I know me personality I can see the beauty in any lady, I find all women pretty (Most). But my sister tells me I should be more picky, she says women wouldn't like me for having so wide of a variety of types of women I find attractive.

@superstay: How old is your sister if you don't mind me asking? Variety is a good thing though. I myself have dated guys who look nothing alike at all but have found most equally attractive? I think women might not like you for being with a wide variety of women, but I don't see them hating on you based on what you consider attractive =)

You are right about it being more of a mentality though, but I never really identified with it, maybe getting married so young didn't help. Though I do also recognize that there are a lot of articles on married life as well.
