"Marvel, MY Universe": The Avengers - Earth's Mightiest Heroes

Everyone dreams of writing the for Marvel or being behind the creative direction of the Marvel Universe. Here I present my ideas if I were ever lucky enough to be in charge of Marvel. Here's the flagship Avengers title - The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

While I respect Bendis and admire what he's done with the Avengers these few years, I just don't like his choice of members for the team. The Avengers are supposed to be "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" - the top dogs, the powerful! Bearing this in mind, having members like Spider-Man and Wolverine made no internal logic when you put them on a team alongside the likes of super soldiers, Gods and brilliant minds.

My team of Avengers will have the big guns! They will truly live up to the moniker of "Earth's Mightiest Heroes". And Captain America begins to understand that the Avengers should truly represent the best of Earth's inhabitants and so should be more diverse to reflect the diverse cultures, nations and species of Earth. So he enlists members who are not only powerful but are from different backgrounds, to show the world that the Avengers are not "America's Mightiest Heroes" but Earth's!

List items

  • The Super Soldier. The most respected superhero on Earth, Captain America now leads and commands an Avengers team more powerful (and potentially more conflicted) than ever before! But like the true hero he is, he is ready to face any challenges and obstacles ahead of him if it means saving the world and fighting for the greater good.

  • The Armoured Avenger.

  • The Thunder God.

  • Earth's Ambassador. I've always thought Ms Marvel should be given more attention in the Marvel Universe. I think she's got great potential to essentially be THE "Wonder Woman" of the Marvel U but even more interesting! The fantastic thing about Ms. Marvel is that she's a strong woman and an amazing role model for all women and a great feminist hero - after all, she debuted as essentially Lois Lane to Captain Marvel's Superman. She was the "damsel in distress" but has now subverted that stereotype and become not only a superhero but an even greater one than her former beau! So in my interpretation, Ms. Marvel is actually renamed "Captain Marvel". She's earned it quite frankly and the Marvel U should always have a Captain Marvel. And with a new name, she's given a new role as Earth's Ambassador by the UN - to foster better relations with extraterrestrial and otherworldly cultures and essentially be the best representative of humanity.

  • The Scientist Supreme. Not many readers give Hank Pym credit, but I see a lot of potential with him especially now as the Scientist Supreme. In my interpretation, Pym begins to act on that role seriously and take a more proactive approach; he establishes a CERN like institute full of the world's top scientists; he invents new contraptions such as "Particle Memory" and "Liquid Information"; and he starts the Superhuman Genome Project just for the sake of science and satisfying his innate curiosity. He's started to subscribe more and more to pacifistic attitudes, wanting to solve problems with scientific and peaceful solutions rather than with fists! Whatsmore, he is this Universe' Scientist Supreme which means his "jurisdiction" covers the vast cosmos meaning that his playground just got bigger, giving him greater adventures and stranger toys to play with. He's like the Marvel Universe' own Doctor Who!

  • The Intergalactic Policeman. Rich Rider can hardly believe he's an Avenger now, but through all the battles and wars he's been through he's certainly earned his place at the grown up's table! But Captain America has belief in him, especially as Cap is in some ways grooming Nova to carry on the Avengers legacy into the future.

  • The Strange Visitor. Aarkus' existence in our dimension hasn't been smooth. After being corrupted and becoming the villainous D'Spayre, Aarkus is looking for redemption for his past sins particularly as his homeworld have banished him to our dimension for his misdeeds. Now he is ready to protect humanity, but can he protect us when he cannot understand us...?

  • The Reformed. Like many on this roster, Songbird has earned her right to be on the Avengers. She's a true poster child of how a former villain can become one of earth's mightiest heroes! But her over-eagerness to prove her worth often gets her into trouble and she's beginning to discover that compared to such legendary heroes, she may not be as squeaky clean or black-and-white as she was when she was with the Thunderbolts...

  • The Night's Terror. Night Thrasher doesn't play well with others...after the death of his brother and the failure of his New Warriors team, Donyell Taylor has learnt that some people are just meant to fight alone. Which is why he's uncomfortable being on the Avengers...and even more uncomfortable when it's Iron Man himself who invites him on the team; the man he still reviles for the Superhuman Registration Act fiasco! But Night Thrasher has come to accept Iron Man's reason for having him on the team; it's a necessity you see. A team of earth's mightiest heroes has a greater chance of concentrating too much on the big picture, overlooking the little guy and letting all the power go to their heads. As Night Thrasher is the only non-powered hero on the team, he's expected to call the team out on their sh**. But when Night Thrasher randomly disappears in the middle of battles or pulls extreme stunts...can he be trusted?

  • The Mutant Shaman. Captain America and Cyclops agreed that if the Avengers were to represent all of earth's inhabitants, that includes mutants too. So Cyclops offered X-Man as the best mutant to be on the Avengers considering for a while now X-Man was a one-man powerhouse who designated himself as shaman to all of mutantkind. But can this traditionally hot-headed kid keep his cool as an Avenger and can he play nice with his Eternal team-mate Makkari who actively despises mutants?

  • The People's Hero. Captain America recognised that the Avengers needed to be more internationally representative and so approached the Collective Man to become a member of the team. Given only one brother (the youngest) while the other four stayed in China, one Collective Man is enough to still be an asset to the team. Cap just wishes that his political and ideological beliefs, let alone his abrasive attitude, didn't cause so much tension and conflict with so many of the team...

  • The Eternal Speedster. Like his Eternal sister Sersi, Makkari is starting to believe that the Eternals should be more involved with the world and so he offers his services to the Avengers. He just doesn't like having mutant team-mates, considering them aberrations akin to the Deviants!

  • The Strongest There Is. A reserve member who only participates when asked...and when he feels like it...

  • The Apprentice. A reserve member only called upon for magical and supernatural threats that the team face...Doctor Strange couldn't lend his own personal service as usually the magical threats the Avengers faced were but mere playground fights compared to his Sorcerer Supreme duties...!
