Who here is a Superman fan?

Though I'm not as hardcore as I used to be (as in buying every issue featuring the character ), I will shout from the roof tops that I am a Superman fan!  With that said, I feel compelled to also mention that I am completely for the relaunching of everything DC in September and that I'm a long time admirer of the work of Mr. Perez.

. . . . so here comes the "but". . . . But I have to say that I think that DC is really dropping the ball on the redesign of Supes here. When it comes to the advent of re-imagining these characters, wouldn't it be fun to go all out and work with designs and ambitions that are bordering on completely different. Certainly things couldn't be compromised, like details such as him being a white male, his height and eye color.

I feel that DC is playing it safe here, using words and phrases to emphasize that they  are making sweeping changes, like "modernize their characters", "more contemporary or appealing". These terms are made moot with the release of  this cover to the pending Superman #1 due out in September. I see Superman here but not a newly invigorated character with the pop-culture appeal that I feel DC is striving for. This is Superman, the Superman that I grew up with that everyone knows with the exception of even sillier boots than the ones he's treading in currently and some lines o his suit that ad nothing to his visual presence.  I feel the same about Aquaman though I'm not as deeply rooted in that character as I am the Man of Steel.

I ask where is the imagination that's going to get new readers to look at this plunk down their money and get hooked on a new era of Superman lore. He doesn't need techno boots and metal seams uniform, He's Superman! Neigh invulnerable to all manner of things the would destroy knee pads and interlocking metal seams.   I don't blame Jim Lee at all, I know how corporate giants who lack creativity would lay the restrictions down heavily on the inventive license of a genius of his caliber. Look at what's been done with Wonder Woman, that's the treatment that I was expecting of all the top tear players, different & exciting with a cool contemporary edge to the aesthetic.

To the right I have added a little Superman reboot of my own. I'm not saying that this is better than what has been provided by DC, I'm just going through the motions of taking a pop-culture icon and playing with the look a little.  I have to ask you guys if you think that this is a redesigned Superman by DC or a cop out with a brainwashing tagline? If you're like me and you don't think so, I would challenge anyone of you to submit your Awesome Superman designs to this thread and share why you think your design would be a better re visioning of the character.

I thought that I would check out how this BLOG  thing works and get a little more work on the site.
This drawing was done a very long time ago for a chance to be published in the Digital Webbing Presents anthology series from Digitalwebbing.com. I had worked this one over in color (color done in Photoshop) but unfortunately, the drawing wasn't chosen and I didn't draw anything for a while after that. The pencils were darkened in Photoshop for contrast.

This one cost me about 18 hours of time, including the color, over the course of about 3 days.
When I look at this  one I think that I should get into more color work but I have to say that just getting to the drawing table is like pulling teeth. Top that off with "this one was a lot of hard work" and you have a recipe for never drawing again! :D

I do remember that there was  a little debate about my color choice for the brains. Weather they're yellow or grey doesn't really bother me so much as the fact that I didn't cover them in blood and red tissue, certainly that would have lead to greater authenticity of scene, but se la vi.
