It's not as bad as I expected and that allowed some surprises. 0

So finally, I was able to read this comic book (my LCBS got it a week later) and find myself finding a mix of feelings about it. Seeing once again the whole Marvel Family (sort of) working together in a continuity story was... Weird! I didn't liked Mary and Billy enjoyable at all, that's true, I actually this story did to me to see Freddy more as the hero than anything else (not that I really like it at all, but well). I just can't stand Mary, for me this character is miles away...

Unexpectedly good! 0

I found myself with a good story featuring not only the most prominent of the Marvels, but also Tawky Tawny and ... Also Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr.! Tawky Tawny also has a great appearance. Batman is, as it was expected, heavily featured, but, make no mistake, in this issue the HERO is Captain Marvel, all along the way! Not only that, but the story opens with Billy Batson and Tawky Tawny arriving during the Holidays to Gotham. The city is in big turmoil over the vengeance of the Psyc...

Captain Marvel meets Mr. Atom... Kimota?!? 1

"Captain Marvel Adventures # 78" has been one of the best issues I've read so far from the Golden/Atomic Age of the old comic Captain Marvel books. I can't stop admiring the art, C.C. Beck not being included among the classic masters of comicdom seems to me something truly unfair, the dynamism, his so well done art, specifically, his so clear style.Anyway, I'll get into the stories, 3, for this issue of Captain Marvel, the first one, featuring the terrible Mr. Atom! The way Mr. Atom is featured ...

An Atomic Blast from the Past! 0

Finally, I reached "Captain Marvel Adventures # 66", the last one that contains the serial introducing Oggar, and an improvement on the story, and in general, in the content of the comic book, is perceived by yours truly.Once again, this comic book shows us the ingenuity of the people in charge of telling us the stories of Captain Marvel, and the daring the were, featuring the same a tale full of fantasy and humor, and then, take the time to give us a dramatic story such as the first that is co...

Return of Dr. Sivana! 0

As if, at the time, Fawcett thought the same as I was saying in my last review about how good it would be to see Dr. Sivana back, "Captain Marvel Adventures # 65" features a "War of the Worlds" tale in it's first part.Men from Mars arrive in ships with "cars with 3 legs" and threat humankind with extermination. It's powers are so awesome that even Captain Marvel has to recognize he's outmatched.Enter: Mary Marvel! The World's Mightiest Girl comes to offer her aid to his brother and, incredibly ...

DC should learn from WHIZ Radio: Captain Marvel is an asset! 1

So, the turn is now for "Captain Marvel Adventures # 64", which, I must say, I don't find particularly memorable, although the art, as usual, is great! I should say that I found this pack of stories a little too dull for moments, including, the strongest one, which was part 4 of the Cult of the Curse serial. The issue starts with "The Little Man Who Wasn't There", which, personally, I found one of the less inspired stories I EVER read for The Big Red Cheese, actually, I find myself missing Dr. S...

This Should've Been a Full Lenght Feature! 2

The Bad: I didn't liked Billy Batson using a Superman pijama... His boxers were from "The Flash"? But I agree this was because I felt a little biased against this, thinking, it would be natural for a boy use something like this if he admires the World's Greatest Hero... My son uses Superman or Batman pijamas almost daily! Also, I felt it was very gratuitous the way Clark Kent was related to Billy Batson in the movie, perhaps this is my greatest "but". Although this is really unimportant ...

Captain Marvel just want to have fun 0

Continuing with the Oggar Serial, a tour to the campy side of Captain Marvel starts in a, rather, specially comical issue of these adventures. It makes me wonder who decided the order into which the stories were jammed in these issues and what logic it obeyed? The episodes of this serial has gone from being the second to fourth, to third... Anyway, it starts with Captain Marvel being "a good neighbor". When I read the story of Captain Marvel in Guatemala against the "giant Mayan ape-god", when C...

The World's Mightiest Human? 0

I continue with my monologue on this serial about Oggar, I happen to have read the second issue (Captain Marvel Adventures # 62) which was a pretty good issue, it amazes me how daring were the adventures of the World's Mightiest Mortal featuring him even riding a horse! Captain Marvel is a very mature character even advising an old man into not cheat a horse race result even tho' he had good intentions. It also performs one of the greatest feats of speed I've seen in Captain Marvel, far f...

Oggar, a villain ahead of it's time. 0

I've just read CMA # 66 and I found the issue very fun. C.C. Beck's art really shines for the character, the comic was so fun that I actually laughed out loud while reading some parts of it, specially the "Captain Marvel and The Mental Monster", it was HILARIOUS. Now, on the first part of the serial introducing Oggar, it was a good chapter: - Oggar basically has the pointy ears typical for ruthless villains done by C.C. Beck, I've arrived at the conclusion that this was his way of saying t...

The ending that should've been Double-Sized 0

Talking about closing with a thunder bam! The most recent (and sadly final) issue in the "Billy Batson and The Magic of Shazam!" saga has shown many things, and hurriedly answered some questions some of us might've made in recent days. Most important, this story opens telling us this is not an ending, but a beginning. Although I would love to think this is the announcement of something that's coming, I felt it was more of a placebo than "the real deal", what I mean, is that I feel that is...

Confidence and Rushed Final Issues 0

Collect time. In my last review I said I felt these series were owing me a good portrayal of Captain Marvel, well, I must say that some of our complaints were listened by Cap himself and "corrected" by the Wizard's words to The Big Red Cheese... Who woulda say it? Why in the universe did the old man didn't told his champion those words 15 issues ago!?! Well, I'm not going to complain, when finally I get what I wanted: a strong, confident, no-bars-hold Captain Marvel that can take in all o...

Classic. 0

This time I have to say that I didn't liked the story that much. I do have expectations for this book and, at least regarding Captain Marvel's deeds, I still feel this book is owing me something.  Mostly, in this issue Captain Marvel was in the need of being rescued, something that, along the lines of the dramatic entrance of Captain Marvel Jr., the return of Black Adam and the Wizard Shazam might've been more exciting IF the main hero in the series didn't had the bad habit in being in tr...

BBatMoS # 18 0

I found myself liking this issue very much more than any other. Which isn't really a surprise, if I remember that, consistently, this comic book has been improving and improving. I loved last issue, but this one got me back into the sensation of being reading that "classic old comic books" I read new as a kid. I found the art better than any other times, but yet again, this isn't surprising. Actually, I liked it the most because I know this title is going to be cancelled soon.   :(Captain...
