My Thoughts on Young Justice: Invasion

  • First thing, I love that Batgirl and Nightwing are here! (Speaking of I am dressing up as Nightwing for this convention thing in July. Can't wait!)
I love that they finally gave Babs her shot in the show. I would've liked to see her become Batgirl in the show, though, so the viewers could get to know her better.
  • Okay, I know the whole Conner x Megan thing isn't really canon, but I don't really see the reason why they would break them up so M'gann could be with Lagoon Boy. That isn't canon either, so I don't see the need. I guess it puts tension in the show, and a something we could see in a later episode, but hey! It isn't a good show without a dramatic relationship! (please, read that as sarcasm.) Cause I was talking to my friends yesterday, and they were asking why the show finds it necessary to have the entire team linked with someone romantically. I made a point, saying that they want the show to appeal to more than just comic fans and younger viewers. Still, it would be nice to have some more canon relationships. I mean, there's Canary and Arrow, but those are so obvious it would be stupid to have them with anyone else. Not talking about RPG here, just the TV. I am all for non canon shipping if its RP, but lets be honest. The show could use the original stuff and it'd be okay.
  • Okay, since Tim is Robin in the show at this point, wouldn't Cass be Batgirl, and Steph be Spoiler? If I am correct, which I do believe I am, didn't Jason become Robin after Dick became Nightwing? In the episodes before, we can assume that Dick is about 16 or 17, meaning that after 5 years, he would be 21 or 22. Jason wouldn't be RedHood, especially since he started running with Batman around the age of 10, maybe 11 or so. He wouldn't be Redhood at this point, because he has had no time to develop a vendetta against Batman or the Joker. On that note also, if Tim is Robin, Babs would be Oracle, because in the comics, Cassandra was Batgirl while Tim was Robin. In the new 52, we can assume Barbara is about 23, because she was shot at around 20, 21, give her take a year. I understand that they don't want the show to have much darkness in it, but these are vital story arcs that have been ignored, basically.

Overall, I enjoyed the episode, but I just had these little issues with it...

Dick was 13 when he was Robin, he's 18 now as Nightwing so you can assume Barbara is around the same age, give or take a year and we don't know how long she's been batgirl because of the time skip.

It's still very possible that Jason was Robin and died because 5 years is a long time and the Drake version of Robin doesn't seem to have been in action for that long. So Jason could have been Robin for a year or two, died, then Drake was recruited.

We'll probably see cameo's of Cassandra and Stephanie since DC gave YJ the green light to use any character in the DC Universe now.

@ArturoCalaKayVee: Well, the team members are in their freshman year of highschool. 13 year olds are usually in 6th or 7th grade. Freshmen are about 15 or 16, unless they were held back or skipped a grade.

I think that they left Jason out because of how dark his character is, what with his murder, and conversion to RedHood. It would be a bad move for CN, because it would raise questions for younger viewers. The same with Barbara. However, there are ways they could tone it down. DC comics are dark in some ways. Plus, the scene where Lobo ripped the man in half to reveal that small alien was somewhat disturbing.

@pinkdaizygirl: No, those ages were confirmed by DC themselves. Dick was 13, Megan was 16 (48 in Martian years), Kon was 16 physiologically, Wally was 15/16, Aqualad was 16, Artemis was 15, Zatanna was 14, Rocket was 15, and Red Arrow was 16 years old, again, physiologically.

And as for Jason Todd, it was hinted/teased/implied by Dick when speaking to Tim that Jason Todd did exist and had died within the five year gap. But thats up for speculation.

@pinkdaizygirl: Your concerns about Cass, Stephanie, and Jason are valid in wanting them on the show. But I wouldn't expect anything, this is an alternate universe from what is in the comics, so histories and events will be different. And any relationship in this show will be canon but only canon for this show...Again since it doesn't apply to the comics.

I'm sure they had the whole Conner X Megan break up so they could institute Conner to now have a relationship with Wonder Girl. This will create more tension I'm sure between the two. Maybe even a love triangle will form.

@ArturoCalaKayVee: in the show, when Artemis was starting her first day at, school, Dick ran up, took a picture, then ran away. The.girl next to her complains about the freshmen. Now, I understand if Dick was 13 in the comics, but I'm just saying what is in the show.

@pinkdaizygirl: I think it was implying that Robin had skipped a few grades and had just entered High school. This would also make Barbara a couple years older than Dick which I think was always the case in the comics. The show creators and DC both confirmed early on that Dick in Young Justice was 13 years old and had been Robin for a few years already.

This would be most accurately correct.

Young justice isn't a direct adaptation of new earth, it's an entirely different universe. Its possible that Jason and/or Cassandra don't exist on this earth.

This.

DC Entertainment has said the Young Justice series takes place on Earth-16. This was done because it was largely untapped and freed the series from established continuity restraints set by the main DC Universe or previously seen other Earths in the DC Multiverse.

Dick did say to Tim, "just don't die, OK," which hints at Jason Todd being dead.

Is it really a different universe?

I think they just left Jason out because they din't think it fit

He's left out frequently. I think some shows just think he doesn't fit in. Cuz most people haven't heard of him. People say "there was a robin that turned bad and has a vendetta on Batman"? Like in BTAS and TNBA, there is no JT. They went to Tim Drake. and JL and JLU. No Jason. So people start to interpret the idea that he never existed. I think the "Tim, don't die on me" was just for fans to think Jason died already because they didn't add him into the show.

@pinkdaizygirl: The show isn't following the comics obviously, it's even set in a different world. Earth 49034830 or whatever.

@redkevlar: The BIG difference between YJ and The New Batman adventures, and why Jason Todd has a real good chance of being in the show is simply that Jason was dead when they were making TNBA. Jason has had a surge of popularity in recent years with his return as Red Hood and being featured heavily in a new animated movie. He even has his own ongoing right now. All of these give Jason a REAL chance of being in Young Justice at some point. Heck even if he wasnt all that popular that wouldnt be the reason why he isnt on the show. They put Artemis, Miss Martian, and Aqualad as main characters on the show and their popularity pales in comparison to Jason even at his lowest point.

Do you think they care about popularity? Seriously Lagoon Boy is in this show. Few teen characters are more obscure. As for Jason at his low point they voted him dead that is not popularity that is hatred.

I'm glad they added Red Robin, Blue beetle, and the rest the only one that cougth me of guard was lagoon boy?? He really has been out of the radar at least from 2008 until now. I guess it was just the way to release super boy from the supermartian ship and get him with wonder girl. I guess Wally is Flash and Barry is trap in the flash force. The show for me got better but it was a bad move for new fan 5 years are to much. I guess they may have some flashbacks or at least 1 episode centered on each character. It does not make sence that they will trash all the character development from the first season. I want to see black manta, captain cold and maybe some sinestro

I understand it's basically a non-canon television show. I was just noting the differences.

: Red Arrow was 18 on the first season :)

: It's Earth 16, it doesn't have to be like the comics. Plus, if they were gonna follow them, it'd be smarter to follow the line of the New 52. Anyway, I think the timeline the show is building is just great :D

@X9: Yeah. I know its different. X3 It's kinda like the Birds of Prey and Smallville tv shows. But you are right. It is building very nicely.

Jason might not exist in this Universe. This isn't directly like the comics.
